Wow Ben, I wish I had seen you do this before I did my population of the board. That soldering tip was definitely good to use. I finished my board and it looked good, but as I did mine and as I see yours my components are not the the same color and look different. I mounted my board in my radio and all looked good, but it didn't work. I failed 😢. I hope to see your next video mounting the board and hope it works. Thanks for the video Ben.
Well done, Ben. great attempt. There is no way I would have attempted SMCs with an iron, so you are a brave man, only ever done SMCs with hot air and solder paste.
Considering the tools you had to hand that was a decent little job of populating that board Ben, a lot wouldn’t go anywhere near doing this so very well done. 👏
Hello Ben, Having tried mounting SMDs, I know that it is not easy. However, there are small hot air soldering stations with adjustable temperature and several nozzle diameters which make this operation easier. Now, if I were you, I would have fixed the printed circuit with tape, which would then leave you two free hands on a stationary part. I was afraid for some components that you heated a lot, but if you tested and everything works, it is very good. Maybe it is me who is afraid for nothing. Well done on the build, just a quick tip. When adding small R's and C's, tin only one pad first, then add the component, get it aligned on the first pad then solder the second, much easier. Similarly with the chip, solder pin 1 first, then in your case pin 9, get it all straight then solder the rest. 73's de Keith G0VDM
Good question! Basically it changes the VHF FM broadcast receiver circuit (which usually receives from 87 to 108Mhz FM) into a HF (High frequency) shortwave receiver which can receiver from 100Khz to 30Mhz AM and USB/LSB (upper and lower sideband). Thanks for watching 👍
What is the point useing your time and money for this project, it is going to be absolute crap HF transceiver don't give me the old argument because I can, you must have so much time on your hands
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. Firstly, the project is for HF reception and doesn't claim to turn the radio into an HF transceiver. I've done some testing, and for a cheap receiver project, it works well. Amateur radio is all about experimenting and learning, not necessarily about the most expensive equipment one can purchase. As an on-call firefighter, when I'm available for emergencies (which is on average 90 hours per week, on top of my normal 48hrs at work) I have to be within 4 minutes of the fire station, so projects like this are perfect when I'm stuck at home waiting for the pager to go off. It's a fun part of the hobby, building something on your own, if you only buy finished product. You are not able to create anything yourself, have to be boring 😉 As I said, it's a part of radio hobbies. It's fun to building on your own 😁
