  • This is my second session with my Axis ART 1099 / 82cm 19mm aluminum mast /Short Black Fuselage 703mm / 400 progressive rear wing. This is my first session with good flight time.
    Lots of fun thoughts in this video. If you have any questions or comments I would love to hear them. 🙂

    Super stoked I stumbled across your video. Looking to upgrade from the Infintiy 99 to the Axis 999 but now I'm thinking I might want the 1099

      ME ( 75KG / board 88L / fresh water mostly / hand wing Mojo 6.2m / 1099, short, 400 progressive, 82cm mast)
      I totally still want the ART 1099 to be my largest front wing as the second it gets to flight it is so efficient, slippery and maneuverable. I usually Wing on small and medium sized lakes with a short fetch so usually gustier conditions ... having great glide is very important.
      I am thinking of adding the PNG 1300 to help with reducing the minimum wind needed to get flying and I may. But the 1300 although efficient is not as efficient as the 1099 or as maneuverable and the 1099 does not need that much board speed to pop up to flight. My Starboard 5'8" 88L Wingboard seems to help with getting to flight in light wind. It is possible a 2022 95L square tail sharp release board may help some for light wind but to maximize dollars spent I think a larger front wing foil then larger sail and lastly larger board "but not too big" is the way to fly in lighter wind.
      Max wind I have been in so far was 20 mph and the 1099 did great, I do not know how it will do with a smaller hand wing with more wind and more swell / chop.
      I believe it totally depends on your weight, other gear, salt water / fresh water, wind conditions exetra. My thoughts are if you are going to use long term a larger front wing as your biggest for super light wind than 999 may be a more cost effective next size down. "I have test tried the i99 for Wingfoiling and did not like it because it had too much drag for me" If I had a larger budget and more of a interest on owning lots of wing gear I probably would own many of the larger Axis wings and depending on wind change the wing.
      I am new to Wingfoiling and have not tried too many foil wings but I think I may miss the 1099 for some sessions if I got the 1300 and 999 to replace it. I have heard from more expirenced Wingers that the 999 is about 2 to 3 mph faster for pushing it max speed vs the 1099. But the 1099 is a totally joy cruising at a flight speed of 8 to 16 mph. My max speed is about 17.5 mph on the 1099 so far I have heard others get a max of just over 20 mph. But I think a longer fuselage and more -° shiming on the rear wing "and maybe a different rear wing" would increase the max speed of the 1099.
      Anyway let me know what you end up getting.

    Very interesting the impact of water pressure on getting foiling. If I understood correctly: If your wings fly through the water in 2m depth, there's more pressure down there and therefore more resistance?

      Well this is just a theory of mine ... 🙂
      The deeper the foil the more the mast is in the water and more drag. A foiler could also fly higher above of the water once up and flying with the foil close to the water too. Overall there seems to be more lift on the foil when going slow with just enough wind power with a 75cm mast vs a 90cm mast. Is this because the longer mast has more drag? Or is it that a foil closer to the water alows slightly more lift in the water due to a larger pressure difference ratio from the top of the foil and the bottom of the foil closer to the surface???
      Thanks for the question ... I have not put a lot of thought into this lately as I am learning how to dock start foil. The dock is high enough that at my current skill level it is easier to lauch with my 82cm mast vs my 75cm mast. Once I get the hang of it I will be launching with the 75cm mast as it will be lighter and stiffer foil responce. But again assuming a wing tip doesn't breach I feel a good amount of lift with the foil close to the water vs deeper eventhough there is less drag.

    I am a low intermediate Wing Foiler (e.g. I can jibe pretty well, but cannot tack yet 😞).
    I recently got PNG 1150 with 500 cm2 rear foil and standard fusalage. I was quite pleasantly surprised that PNG 1150 has the same lift as previous 2000 cm2 front foils I tried (S type, RRD Dynamic, Gaastra FR, etc) although PNG 1150 has more than 10% less surface area. However, turning radius is surely larger than previous 2000 cm2 front foils. Also, it really pumps well!!
    For next front foil, I am quite torn between going for the HPS sereis 980?) and ART 1099. Maybe I should get HPS 1050 and ART 1099 since they can sure the same rear wing..... If I have to choose one though, what is your thought/opinion on this?

      Hey SmoothRider. We are almost the same weight. I range from about 158 to 175 lbs between winter bulk up and summer lean out. Most of the year I am very close to your weight.
      Your current board sounds like a great all rounder. From all the testing and reasurch I have done picking the brains of other riders here is what is popular right now. Going for too big of a board will make it more difficult to get flying in light wind. The extra float is so nice in light gusty wind or light wind with boat chop or surf. But a lighter board with a squared back and sharper rails and less surface area stick when pumping will help you to push the limits for your light wind flying. For my weight of 75kg and with the weight of my personal gear / board weight / foil weight - extra boyant force and hand wing in the air I believe I am at 89kg ... as I sink a inch or 2 to my feet with no wind. With about 4 mph of wind eventhough the back is sinking a bit I can comfortably slog standing. I am getting better at slogging jibes in light wind too. I have completed a few slogging tacks but so far I need some speed comming in and need to complete most of the turn before I pivit the hand wing / change my feet. A more boyant board than my 88L would make slogging and tacking way easier but it is doable in super light wind as long as there is flat water. Summed up for me to get a board more comfy for slogging and to get the best possible light wind to flight I am looking at a board that is 92L to 100L. For my size anything over a 100L will just make it more tough to get flying and a few extra liters vs my 88L would be nice too for comfort. If I mainly have 10 or more mph of wind and it only occasionally goes to 4 mph of wind my 88L as a one Wing board solution is quite good for me.
      I have not personally tryed your hand wing / sail but I have heard good things about it for light wind. Also your 1150 FW with your 500RW are great at light wind flight. I am new to rear wings for Wingfoiling but I very much like my 400 Progressive rear wing for manurability / efficency / speed. When you are ready for more maneuverability a progressive rear will be way more turny vs your 500 monster!
      There are so many foils out there with so many interesting foil combos ... and so many options from Axis alone. For your next size down I think you would be quite happy with eather the ART series or the HPS series. For a similar size comparison the ARTs are more turny and efficient and the HPS have a lower stall speed. With all other gear identical the HPS 1050 will get you flying in just a bit less wind vs the ART 1099.
      We're I am at right now to keep my budget in check I Wingfoil in 10 to 22 mph of wind. If there is going to be less wind than 10 mph I Windsurf foil with my 8.6m NX from Sailworks. With my light 131L Slalom board, powerfull and slippery race sail and with the 1099 / windsurf fuse / 400 P rear I can get flying in such light wind "like about 5 mph" and go so fast and maneuverable in so little wind.
      I just watched Dominic's updated video and the Strike CWC 8.0m is still the light wind champ "for now at least ... who will overthrow it?!?" and eventhouth the 1150 is awesome the PNG 1300 is rated number 1 by many as the light wind beast for Wingfoiling. Big $$$ just for a new 8.0m wing, 1300 FW & a red fuse so I decided to hold off ... for now at least.
      As you shop for new front wings think about if you will keep the 1150 as your largest front wing or would you prefer your largest front wing to be a bit smaller. If you plan to foot pump foil / dock start the 1150 is rated #1 by many so don't sell it if you plan to use it for this or other cool things. For Wingfoiling with your hand wing board and front foil wing if your biggest is a bit smaller you can own less gear as the gap can be the same but pushed down for your next size smaller. If the # of pieces of equipment or your budget are High you can extend your range and get better sessions in a bigger wind range of conditions.
      I think if I purchased the PNG 1300 my next size down could easily be the ART 999. But the ART 1099 will get flying in a bit less wind versus the 999. The PNG 1300 is very efficient for it's size but the 1099 is noticeablely more slippery or efficient feeling and way more manuvarable. So the moment I have enough wind I would perfer the 1099 over the 1300 ... I would be missing the 1099 for some sessions if I sold it I think.
      There are some bonuses to switching wind watersports based on conditions but if you do not already own some nice windsurfing gear it makes sense to fine tune your Wingfoiling loadout by selling / purchasing some gear. 🤣😅🤪

    What's the gps watch you are using for measuring your top speed?

      I use the Locosis GW-60 dopler GPS watch.
      It is very accurate and has the option to collect data points at 1hz and 5hz. At 1hz the battery fully charged lasts 6 hours and at 5hz it lasts less. The wrist band has broken off and there is not a replacement option. It still works tucked in my impact vest pocket.

      I may get the Garmin watch with solar recharge if I get back into all day distance sessions. With this watch I won't have to come in to recharge, have two GW-60 watches or bring a small battery bank.

      As far as I know the Instinc Solar does not allow the option of increasing the data points to as much as the GW-60. So for recording my best speed runs the GW-60 is still the way to go. I think the Instinct Solar does have a option to reduce data points to save battery and memory ... like once a minute which is fine for long multiple day hikes.
