Car and Driver recently tested 11 electric cars in the ultimate test. How long does it take them to travel 1,000 miles? Contenders include the Audi e-tron, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia Niro EV, Nissan Leaf Plus, Polestar 2, Porsche Taycan 4S, Tesla Model 3 Performance, Tesla Model S Long Range, Tesla Model Y Performance, Volvo XC40 Recharge, and Volkswagen ID.4.
We'll compare claimed charging speed versus actual average charging speeds for electric cars, and look at how long it takes each of the 11 contenders to charge up for 100 miles of highway driving at 75 mph. Additionally, we will compare stated EPA range versus actual highway range.
For the road trip, this video will compare overall traveling time, charging time, how much slower the competition is versus the fastest car, how much slower everyone is versus a gas car, and average speeds. We'll also discuss charging infrastructure, headaches, navigation, planning, and the Electrify America charging network.

Well, also in Europe is still troublesome in many locations, chargers don't work, charging at highway getting very expensive, not enough chargers, and the navigation systems are mostly the same by often not providing the most convenient chargers along the route ... so Tesla's supercharger network is also much more convenient in Europe than using any other operator.

@Noah McNeill Diesels are widely available. Most heavy duty trucks are diesel. For cars it's basically non existent (other than Smart cars, oddly enough), but big diesel trucks like the Ford 350 are all over North America because that's how the blue collar trades get down. If you need to tow trailers or do heavy hauling, there's a good chance you drive a diesel.

Every time I use autopilot, I like it less, but it's not like I need it to be comfortable, so that's okay. I hate how commonly it brake checks literally empty air. Anyways, my estimation so far is that basically trips like these are all about bladder and stomach tolerances. For me personally, I've found my Y LR to be approximately 30 min slower per 500 miles driving than I was in my FFH, which isn't "nothing", but also isn't something I consider a deal breaker. 9 months, 15k miles it has been a blast.

In a gas car, you know you're getting almost the same exact experience be it Shell, 76, Chevron, etc. On my trip, every charger had a different app, different set of instructions, and different rates of success, and it was frustrating. Gas stations gave us a nearly ideal blueprint to follow for charging stations, and everybody except Tesla is blowing it.

The only minor gripe I had was that they didn't have any superchargers on the eastern side of the park, so I had to go around it from the north side from Billings, MT, to Bozeman, MT, to finally reach West Yellowstone, MT, which does have a Supercharger there.
There are L2 chargers scattered on the eastern side here and there, but I didn't want to rely on them, getting there and finding out they're broken, and now I'd be stuck.

Just another point of view - range and charging speed aren't always an important thing in an electric car. Our main cars are a gen 1 leaf and a (2020) mg zs ev (cheapest ev in Australia). Have never used a rapid charger on the leaf and only charge at home using solar power. It's range is only about 55 miles! which is actually plenty for around town. The MG has a (acurate) range of 160miles and can charge at up to 80kw. We purchasee it because my partner got a job 140miles away. Recently did a road trip to middle of nowhere South Australia (650miles) and even with the pathetic amount of fast chargers here in Australia it was a totally fun enjoyable trip - the car was always charged enough at each stop before we were ready to leave.

I don’t fully understand how the Tesla is able to travel 1000 miles quicker than a gas car.
Tesla took 1.6 hours of charging stops, but was only 20 minutes slower than a gas car with 30 minutes stops, which would mean for 1000 miles the Tesla does it .7 hours or 42 minutes quicker.
This means there is some issue with that comparison and realistically the difference between the two should at best only be charging time, but in actuality it would be more due to required route changes to go to the chargers.
Recalculating, the actual difference should be closer to Tesla take 1 - 2 hours longer, depending on the trip.

The drive there took 3hrs longer than GMap est and I had to use 3 different apps on my phone. The drive back took 35min longer than GMap est and I used 0 apps on my phone. The experience was night and day.
I also just got back from a ~3k mile round trip road trip in the Y. It couldn't have been easier. Autopilot made the freeways a breeze. Nav and charging worked flawlessly. And the whole trip only cost about $100 in charging (partly because of 700 free supercharging miles I had, but mostly because of free charging at hotels and parking garages. And because even supercharging is much cheaper than gas).
Anyway, guess my point is: if it's just an around town commuter you'll charge at home, any EV is a great option. But if you have road trip plans (even short ones), Tesla is a fantastic choice.

I do not normally do road trips.
I recently did a road trip from NYC to Harrisburg, PA and drove a total of 220 miles. I filled up on Premium 93 for $3.17 a gallon and used roughly half my tank while getting just 14 mpg in my JEEP SRT 6.4-Liter. I stopped once at a rest stop that actually had a TESLA supercharger with 10 stalls. NO ONE WAS THERE. I had Roy Rogers for lunch and sat for about an hour - then I got back on the road.
I personally think that driving 200 miles at a time, stopping for an hour or so to rest, eat and relax is a great way to eliminate fatigue. Some drivers exceed 500 miles between rests, but they tend to stop at least once for gas since most gas cars have a range of bout 300 miles. Aside from the AC, there isn't much else using power to decrease your EV's range significantly.
