This is literally my child. What ended up being the solution? Our in-home potty-training economy is crashing, and soon it will cost 100 stars on the star chart to buy a loaf of bread.

Incentive works, but the problem with incentives is that they create extra demand which increases an artificial supply. So, when the incentives stop, the economy goes back to where it was.
Basically what I'm trying to say is, if you would've stopped giving your kid M&M's she would probably stopped going to the toilet.

yeah and the drawback of postive reinforcement is , that when reward (in this case M&M is not given anymore) behaiviour is most likely to stop.
There is actually a term combining this method which contains simple psychology and economy "Token economy"

I don't know, you ve said you dont know the specific strategies but the only one I could come up with for the speed limit example is, to give people money who have managed not to drive higher than the limit (or not got caught by doing it :P). What other pleaseant consequences would be there for someone sticking to the speed limit?

Hello, I'm planning to send people to this link in my potty training memberships. Hope that's ok, and that you're planning to keep this video up for awhile. Thanks! ~ Michelle

I do fully agree with you that they should use it as much as possible.
But thats proably the problem "as much as possible". I mean except the some you just have listed but I mean would you rather suggest that someone should get money when he sticks to the speed limit? Government can't do that especially when they are broke and looking where they can save money and cut money. Token economy is manipulative though and even though you re point is right it is difficult to apply that to everyday life.

I know that's this B F Skinner views. I rememeber that back in the days from my psychology GSCE. I haven't got the subject anymore when I ve gone ahead but always maintained a great interest for it.
I do think that the governments should employ more psychologists for this , and I am actually not sure If they are doing it when they come up with reinforcement scheme, penalty etc. Aversive means to exchange the unconditioned response with a unconditioned one (which is unpleaseant one), right?

Yeah, positive and negative reinforcement are actually keys in terms of raising of children. So are you suggesting with the first comment that the government should rather use positive reinforcement than punishment (negative sanctions) ?
I mean it is really difficult applicable to lawbreakers.

Problem could be that when something is legally prohibited, people just tend to do it, because when something is forbidden, they desire to do it. I am not an expert thats why I cant explain it. It is like a youth with a moped , for instance just allowed to have an engine with speed limit 50kmh until getting 16 but upgrade it with some tricks to 80, and not always the reason us that he wants to drive faster.
It can be social influence involved (friends so normative influence) or the one above.
