The Experiment That Taught Monkeys How to Use Money | Freakonomics
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 жов 2011
- Stephen Dubner describes the research of Keith Chen and his experiments with the monkey economy. Monkeys were taught to use money by economists to buy different commodities, hilarity ensues. Recorded live in St. Paul.

This is simultaneously one of the funniest and most fascinating things I've listened to in a long time.

Literally the first job one monkey performed for another monkey in exchange for money. But I guess you could argue the monkey selling was a salesmonkey first, then a hooker.
The ever-lasting profession
Fascinating. I was suprised that they started buying cheaper foods and not the ones they really liked.
Holy shit this is awesome and hilarious. In part due to morbid curiosity and in part due to regular curiosity, there was once an experiment based on addiction using mice, which in that experiment the mice would rarely if ever go for the water laced with cocaine because they’d rather spend time with other mice and whatnot. Essentially the cure to addiction was friendship (not really but look up the experiment it’s not far off). In this monkey economy experiment, how would they interact when drugs are introduced and with money acting as a median for drugs could they also reduce addiction? Maybe this way we can push even harder for addicts to be treated as sick rather than as criminals.
Ancap intensified at the end
I want an experiment where you teach monkeys all the basics of the human life, trade, money, jobs and other basic human stuff, and then you put all of them in a closed of town area and see what they do.
I was thinking that since they already grasped the basic concepts. Like they learn with a certain amount of coins their living arrangement improves individually. As well as accommodations but they get to mingle with the other monkeys for a few hrs of the day but go back to their personal luxury living quarters
Then introduce another set of monkeys and see if they get exploited as a subset class of monkeys being taught by the superset of monkeys a different set of rules...
This guy is a great speaker :D
Listen to the Freakonomics radio podcast then. It's great and has an archive of probably 1,000+ subjects/podcasts
Yes
It must be hard to be a scientist.
wrg
C’est surtout passionnant je dirai
I would like to see the actual article published on this =)
Ok
it's mind blowing experiment.
this is exactly what ive noticed in asda today, pack of Pringles was for £1 for 160gr now they have introduced a pack for £1 but only 130gr
Awesome video! What an amazing insight into the behavior of monkeys. I wonder if their behavior reflects that their basic needs were being met with the money they had, so they were ready to fulfill their wants with what they had left over. In monkeydom, and maybe even in our thinking, sex is only one step above food in our hierarchy of needs.
I am wondering if this experiment is still in progress. Would love to see how they behave now. May be they would start developing tools and such...
Obsessed with nothing but sex and food? Sounds like a lot of people!
ok
You. Didn’t have to put our lives on blast like that
Does anyone have any reference on the monkey sex claim?
We express our preferences through money.
So many people talking about the study, yet no direct link to the study itself?

That's the study you're looking for

The love of money causes all kinds of evil. Some people have turned away from what we believe because they want to get more and more money. But they have caused themselves a lot of pain and sorrow.
@jdh358 or it could be the fact that it was posted less than a day ago
Hairless monkeys is all we are, this is proof positive.
someone send this to karl pilkington
Monkey news, and this time it's true.
the monkey gave the human some coins and ask for no food😎😎😎
Austria D brought me here
This is a shock to 0% of the male population. We usually figure it out by 6th grade. 🤣
don't try to fool us by these figures, where is the video???
its made up and no hard evidence. people are easily brainwashed, best trick in the world is to tell something that other wants to hear . . . boom!! mission accomplished
@@goforfreedom784 You know what I've always noticed with people who accuse others of being brainwashed? They are often projecting insecurities of their own..
There is plenty of video and evidence of this, like in Indonesia and similar countries where monkey's steal from tourist's, and if you offer the monkey food that it really likes, it will happily trade your phone for the food.
Even if it’s fake let’s enjoy the story shall we?
My 34th sense is saying that "that not the point"

WHAT PART OF THAT DO YOU THINK IS TRUE
Did he just say Capuchins are not smart?
I know, technically they are in the stone ages.
why did Phillip throw all the coins away?
He was in a night club, that's why
Probably was hoping he’d get more than the others
well, I guess this is proof that sex work shouldn't be stigmatized, as it seems almost... natural
He pronounced the gala apple group lol. U can trust nobody
if this study happened.. then where are the videos?
Pervert.
studies dont imply videos
@wrjamescom
No we didn't and that's not true.

Why wouldn't they also exchange food for sex in the wild? This story sounds suspicious.
Because they were conditioned to exchange money for goods not goods for goods or services. Comes naturally to us probably because you and me, we can abstract that, but the thesis assumes that the monkeys are not complex-minded. I'm pretty sure that if they were conditioned with a food barter system, they would do just what you were saying.
kewkabe yeah... I don't believe it.
Animals do this all the time. That's why men hunt, meat buys sex.
Because there is no system of bartering to condition them. Also safety is more of an issue there, and there’s no guarantee of more food in the wild. In this scenario the monkeys know that the researchers will come and provide more food at a later point, and more coins… so now sex is actually more scarce than the food… therefore more valuable. Also in the wild they haven’t been conditioned to trade.
Like the other guy said, they probably could condition them to do that too.
@@FRTGameplays I’ve gotta agree that some sort of bartering system would form. But animals wild and domestic pounce at any meal they can get. And only things like parental instinct can override the urge to stuff down any food the second it’s secured to instead be given to your offspring. That being said. With favorite foods and the like, and assuming for enough food surplus that the monkeys would feel secure in not going hungry. I think it could happen
hilarious

All hilarious, I'm laughing at people laughing... well, obviously, God was/is an idiot (ie. Noah and the murder-everyone-else-fail) and or, most likely, just totally made up. Anyway, sum; At least 'god' doesn't need to send any more waves. It's obviously not us.. The phrase: "don't hate the player - hate the game", came into mind.
He is probably a some kind of phony, with his lame blessings.
At this point it's kind of obvious God doesn't exist in any functional capacity.
I really doubt there was so malicious intent in this situation, if there was a situation like this, I could bet the male monkey as a provider gave the coin as gratefulness, that's far from prostitution, that's give and take, reciprocity, , animals are capable of that not prostitution geez
Where's the proof
I have been searching for a video, no luck so far
Tbh who would post sex on UA-cam lol
Just speeches and pictures. No evidence.
My god I hate science journalism.
yeah it's so crap
John Doe exactly
saltcheese That's the point. Don't just "skim the conclusion." Read the goddamn article.
the way scientific articles are structured such that going through section relevant to your interest suffices. r u urself doing any research work?
saltcheese I have a graduate degree in behavioral science.
Read the flippin article instead of having a jew summarize it for you.
