  • Oh. Well. That wasn't what I expected to do.
This is my thoughts and experiences of basically being a new player to MapleStory. And hoo boy, did I have thoughts. And a lot of them, aren't even the game's fault.

For what its worth, having those worries while making guides to help people means you're committed to giving people a better experience. You're doing fine with all that. Your effort is appreciated because hell, i'm not sure how i'd have as much fun on sage and astro if i didn't understand their gameplans that you outlined step by step. your guides had a lot of info, was easy to digest and your intent to give people a start and not "ultimate dps/heal" guide made it feel more nurturing and less pressuring. i look forward to what you dish out. take care of yourself!

20:41 For weskalber or anyone still not sure, the reason Why CRA gear is so vital to progression is because:
    1. Its very easy to get compared to how much power it gives you. The full set affect gives you 30% boss damage and 50 flat attack which is huge, also the items can go up to 22 star force and get access to boss tier flames(the flames can roll much higher than random gear from trash mobs)
    2. The most important reason however is that the armor is split into top and bottom pieces instead of being an overall like most other armor sets. So if you compare it to armor sets that have higher base stats, the fact that you can have 2 pieces with separate star force, flames and Potential means that the CRA top and bottom are permanent BIS(Best in Slot) for 90% of the player base and even after getting better gear sets like Absolab and Arcane Umbra, you still keep the 3 piece CRA set and only replace stuff like Weapon, Gloves, boots, cape, Shoulder etc.
The only top and body piece that are better than CRA are the Eternal Set which was released only a few years ago and would require hundreds of hours of grinding and bossing to get which is beyond what 90% of players can handle.

Hey this was the first video I've seen of your channel and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm sorry that you had a negative experience with the maple community and unfortunately it's not uncommon for new players to experience this as knowledgeable people tend to get burnt out answering the same questions over and over and there's a lot of divas. I've thought a lot about making an actual real guide to the game as there isn't ONE video or series that effectively does that. I came back last year and am a current endgame player but thankfully had a lot of knowledge from visiting the game every couple years.
I will say the deluge of systems comes from the fact that 1. the game is old obviously and 2. there weren't really new players coming in from 2012-2020 so all the content was designed to give current players things to do. Not a defense just wanted to express that because I think it gets lost in the conversation. This is also why people say Reboot saved GMS because the game was definitely dying during this period and even Reboot until some QOL changes were made wasn't enough to really bring in new players. But there's more new players now than ever and I think the community is struggling to realize that these people aren't old players or people that have been interacting with the game on and off but completely new to it. That's why so many guides presume that the acronyms will make sense. Or that gear progression up to 200 isn't worth mentioning. And honestly most content creators aren't endgame - hell the biggest creator Coppersan isn't endgame so a lot of the popular info is misguided. Star force may seem like a lot but you will make so much money grinding and bossing to 260, 270, 275, that it's not hard to be full 21 at the very least by that point. 200 billion mesos seems like a lot starting out but established accounts make over 100 bil a month easily. And this is a game that you measure progress out in months or years not hours. I know that's not for everyone but for me that's what I was looking for. It's closer to OSRS Iron Man than it is FFXIV or any other theme park MMO. I love the progression and the grinding but YMMV.
All that to say thank you for sharing your thoughts I really enjoyed the video. If you feel like continuing to play I am happy to help with any questions :) And I hope you're feeling better.

Copper is 9k Legion so like, how isn't he even endgame? That's insane!
I think at the point I'm at I need to start investing in Meso/Drop gear for my main. While I got some ok Drop Familiars early on (I get like, 30% from both combined), my reading seems to indicate I need to invest now. Highest 5th Job skill is like, level 3 when not accounting for Matrix Points, and I've gotten 0/2 of my Boost Nodes. So while I've gotten to Esfera alright, I'm very much at the start of the true marathon.
Issue once again comes to terms and 0 explaining.
      www.math.toronto.edu/~jim/MS/Equips.html
Very old BiS list I found that was linked in a 2023 post on reddit I think it was. Master Ring is event only, BG ring idk wtf (Its apparently Phantom Forest? Kill bosses that hopefully are spawned, lockbox drop, open lockbox, hope you get BM lockbox, hope you get ring? lmao 5 layers of RNG.)
Gollux (Hard/Hell) don't give you any way to practice from what I saw, so idk what stats to hit first
And it's just... it's so much, and so little explained no matter what I look for.

    • @michaelzhao966
      @michaelzhao966 7 місяців тому +2

@@WeskAlber that list is very outdated and useless in 2023, in general i would advise against looking at anything using the term "bis" because this is an outdated way to look at the game since there is always new gear being added at this point. I think looking at guides with "progression" as keyword is probably fine and only look for youtube videos uploaded in 2022 or later helps to stop getting outdated information. Also maplestorys reddit is very dead and outdated or just wrong information there.
To be honest the game is hard to learn without either a "mentor"(experienced friend), a guild that is friendly and willing to answer any questions, or watching 50 different guides with varying levels of useful information mixed in with useless and sometimes misinformation while going through trial and error for 6 months+ before you can really understand the games systems.
I would personally recommend you to look for that friendly guild, or if that's not an option be prepared for the trial and error period understanding the games systems and your mindset should steer clear from "progression" or "efficiency" and just try to learn and enjoy the game for what it is.
Because the main problem when content creators have to explain "how to progress" is even though you have 10 different systems you can actively engage in for progression there is a priority difference depending on what point you are in the game, what class you play, what resources you have, how lucky you get, etc that simply cannot be explained properly. So they can say you need drop/meso gear, but if you aren't oneshotting then this is useless(imo) because you arent killing mobs efficiently. This isn't to say the content creator is wrong for saying "YOU NEED MESO GEAR" because you need to understand the system and get it later, but if you just focus on that right now(the biggest example of this is legion)
then you can significantly hinder your progress over focusing on a new system you just learned about that you don't need to interact with quite yet.
So TLDR; just play to enjoy the game and the process and if you do like it and are interested in progressing to end game after you learn everything you can in the game(but still feel like you aren't progressing as fast as you should be) there are streamers I've seen that do account "coaching?" sessions where you show them your account in a long session and talk about your goals and they answer any questions you have about your account.

    • @WeskAlber
      @WeskAlber  7 місяців тому

Its less guides are telling me I need Drop gear and more I have so few nodes and Drop gear is the only way to really get more. 5 or so a week is hardly sustainable and yes, I would like if my skills weren't stuck at low levels/I had boost nodes at all.
Well, I'll try and wing it then. Thanks.

@@WeskAlber I advise waiting for the hyper burn in new age to make a potential "main". You joined late so you missed the hyper burn rewards which give out lots of nodes to get a jump start. I completely agree with you that Maplestory is difficult for new players to get into. I've thought about making guides before, but I'm not sure I'm the right person to do it for various reasons. I might be late with these corrections/additions, but
    (1) The reason why Chaos Root Armor is best in slot is because its top and bottom are two separate items, giving you an extra potential slot as opposed to overalls covering both the top and bottom slots. You'd think overall armor would give you more stats to compensate for the fact that it covers two slots, but it doesn't. Then since you're using CRA shirt and pants anyways, you use the CRA hat as well, because the 3 piece set effect from CRA + 5 set Absolab or Arcane Umbra is slightly better than 2 set CRA + 6 set Absolab or Arcane Umbra. It's also easier to upgrade the star force on CRA than it is for Absolab or Arcane Umbra; being level 150 makes it cheaper per attempt than Absolab at 160 or Arcane at 200, and replacement CRA items are dirt cheap if you get unlucky and it gets destroyed.
    (2) When star force destroys an item, it doesn't COMPLETELY destroy it, but instead leaves an item called a trace. Item traces drop to 12 stars but retain their exact flame and potential. The trace can restored to a useable item by transferring a duplicate item into it through the star force interface. Don't get me wrong, booming items is still a painful penalty, especially given the absurdly low drop rate of endgame items like the pitched boss accessory set.
    (3) The cooldown reduction inner ability isn't REDUCTION, it's an RNG based chance for a complete cooldown SKIP. It doesn't significantly desync you from burst windows because you get to just use the same skill again immediately. (In most scenarios anyways.) Note that this works DIFFERENTLY from CD reduction hats or Mercedes' legion effect, which ARE guaranteed CD reduction.
    (4) Punch King is the name that the game _most commonly_ uses for events based around dealing as much damage as possible to a stationary target. For instance, recently there was the World's Best Punch King event, which was made for endgame players to be able to measure their damage against each other. Your problem arises because Nexon frequently reuses the punch king format, but doesn't always give this event format the same name. I've found this to be a problem in other online games too -- if the developers cannot provide clear, distinct, and consistent names for their mechanics, the players will come up with their own names. And usually, this name winds up being based on the oldest or most common implementation of the mechanic, regardless of the actual text in front of the player. Another example of this problem in Maplestory is how "bonus stats" are referred to as flames based on the item used to reroll them, because "bonus stats" is FAR too generic of a name for anyone to actually know what it means.
If there's anything else that newcomers are confused about, please let me know. I started playing the game again since early 2020, so I've already gotten used to many of these quirks, and sometimes I forget about what is and isn't obvious.

I have yet to play all of them but it really helped me learn about the 2min window and what all buffs everyone gives. I think you make excellent guides. I played Maplestory before big bang and I feel for people that try to step into it now. There is indeed 20 years of catch up you have to do to even begin getting all the perks. As someone who went from FFXIV to Maplestory with no prior experience I will say that people should definitely give it a try if they're interested. Leveling and getting stronger is a lot easier now with the exp from events, potions, monster park and other things. I got a ton of legion from just starting a few months ago and had a blast doing it. If you like 2D style MMORPGs, Maplestory is the best and the combat is really addicting once you start learning rotations and get some gear. It's a lot to figure out, but I highly recommend the game. Just play reboot if you can and avoid over-spending in the cash shop if you're not mega rich. I had over 400 days played in FFXIV, and I've followed almost all your job guides at some point, but I quit FFXIV for Maplestory because to me the day to day in Maplestory is much more fun than it was in FFXIV. I can do the combat endlessly and have fun with it, while I never enjoyed the combat in FFXIV. So if you're looking for some fast-paced 2D combat definitely give it a shot. You might like it, like I did. The bugs and crashes aren't really an issue as a long-time Bethesda and WoW player. It's really just a minor inconvenience when you do crash most of the time.
One more thing to mention. They recently announced a fresh reboot server. It will be called Hyperion. Everyone is starting fresh and a lot of new players, returning players, players who started recently and missed the legacy stuff and players from the reg servers are planning on joining. If you check out Duky's channel you can find a link to a discord, or you can join reboot central if you want to ask questions or join the hype train. I think it's going to be a lot of fun and have that fresh launch feel. I'm making it my main server and I had almost 9K legion on original reboot.
Also, the music in FFXIV is my alltime favorite of any MMORPG, but Maplestory very often reminds me of FFXIV music. Some of it is VERY good. So if you're into good music, check out some Maplestory stuff.
Oh, and Hyperion launch date is November 15th, so if you're interested you have some time to get prepared!

Hey Wesk, don't mean for this to sound too familiar as you don't know me and you are just an internet guy who makes videos, but at the very least (though I am not one of your peers as you say) I can confirm your content is good and you are making a difference. Not to toot my own horn, but rather back up what I say, I've cleared a couple savage raid tiers and one ultimate so far with more planned, and parse decently to boot (not that it matters all that much), but anyway, the point is I think your guides are good and useful and correct. And I have the skill to back it up, and what you say is stuff I agree with.
I've had friends start this game in the last year, and it's been rough trying to explain all the systems and mechanics and mental ideas of "how to play" and *why* this is how to play, and your guides have been a godsend in being able to outsource a lot of explanations so I don't have to sit down and repeat myself 10 billion times, knowing they're in good hands here. The leveling guides especially are fantastic because no one out here is making stuff for people who are just going through the game the first time, and who don't know what a GCD is, or what weaving is, or what a rotation is, or what you're even supposed to do under 80 or 90. Just the other day I shared your "how to play healer" with my friend who was a medica ii happy white mage who really overemphasized healing. Things you do like the math breakdown on dps and how much difference tank/healer dps really makes and stuff is what really sets you apart, and I appreciate it because that kind of explanation on "why" is such an important thing that people don't get explained, and is the primary reason I shared your video, because it explains the rationale behind it so well, and doesn't just say "do it because this is how we do it".
Also I just wanted to say, I can't relate in the same way, but the thing with the ffxiv creator who I won't name, a lot of us were hurt, and it was especially ironic considering their whole shtick and brand was being a "whole inclusive space uwu" (not to badmouth sorry) and yet doubled down on transphobia and deflected when people criticized them for it and tried to explain why that was bad, but alas. It is what it is. We all wish the world was a nicer, better place that was welcome for all of us, but in the end we can't change people who don't want to be changed, and finding out who your real friends are early is better than finding out late. I don't know what to tell you but I wish you the best, and I hope you are happier now, and find happiness later, all we have in this world is each other, and though you are but a stranger to me, I appreciate you and what you have brought for all of us, and I hope you can see the value in that even without the validation you desire from your peers.

This video was great, thanks for making it. I play a bit of maplestory and my biggest gripe is the progression. The game forces so much progression onto players that may not want to do those things they make you. Such as legion, link skills, long ass quest lines to do bosses, etc.
And the equipment progression being artificially elongated, there is so much luck involved. Remove star forcing booming (losing your equipment because it gets destroyed), and losing stars. Remove the luck based mechanics behind cubes, just make certain lines directly purchasable through meso, make flaming lines purchasable. Too much of it is luck based :(

Dual blades can roll for CD skip on their inner ability ( 9:37) as it'll help with resetting your i-frames for survivability and Final Cut (your major final damage(FD) buff) otherwise boss damage is fine for sustain damage.
MSE is mainly referred to as WSE (Weapon Secondary Emblem), honestly never heard of people say MSE even if they have no reference of the abbreviation.
Cooldown reduction(CDR) is separate from CD skip as it refers to the potential system that's only available on hats, not inner ability. CDR reduce the cd on your v matrix class specific skills (BoD and Tornado) since thats where the majority of your damage will be coming from and spamming them more frequently allows you to train/grind more efficiently. There must have been some miscommunication between the hodgepodge of words being thrown at you with reckless disregard from now knowing maple jargon.
Honestly I agree with you that the systems in maplestory have a steep learning curve and are not introduced or explained well to new players. Video's I've seen sometimes skew too much into early game or too far into late-endgame and are filled with abbreviations most new players do not know of. Its common consensus that guilds are the go-to communities to guide you through the whole process and make sense of the majority of the systems, jargon and abbreviations.
For more specific questions about progression for your class, I would take a huge grain of salt from video guides and would suggest looking for a class discord. They can be found through Reboot Central (largest unofficial maple discord) or through the links on the sidebar in the maplestory subreddit. I strongly suggest to read any pinned guides or docs you see before asking general questions as it's expected etiquette in most of these discord (ie asking where to train at lvl xx will probably get you banned since most info can be found pinned or search bar, but questions on where to go from where you're at now or what to focus on is generally okay)
My go to sources of general maple information would be Maplewiki and strategywiki, and outside of discords, check out GrandisLibrary for an easy to understand overview of classes. If you're curious about the costs of cubing, starring, flaming gear I suggest SuckHard's calculators. There are plenty of tools and sites created by the community that help tremendously for niche parts of the game if you search and ask around.
The main gist of progression in maple is to grab gear that are flame-advantaged, 22-starrable, and cubeable as well as completing or min maxing equipment set effect bonuses. Your goal should be to find gear that you can invest that won't be thrown away quickly and can last far into your maple journey, generally any accessory over lvl 130. Familiarize yourself with what gear sets are available and the in and outs of transfer hammering as that is the key to gearing yourself efficiently up until mid-game.
For example, beginners would want to have full 9-set boss accessories (from killing daily bosses) before making your way to 3 or 4-set CRA, advised to invest more in the armor and not too much on the weapon since there's a better weapon upgrade a little further down. Once your able to clear CRA comfortably you can work on replacing some of your accessories for gollux set(usually reinforced or superior 4-set acquired from killing Hell version of Gollux (Hellux)*. In the meanwhile you should be going around unlocking and finishing all your boss prequests and get strong enough to challenge Lotus and Damien, aka Lomien / Dotus** and upgrade your armor to the lvl 160 Abso set.
*Hellux required you to not destroy any of his shoulders or abdomen, but if thats too hard you may also kill Hardlux, which requires you to destroy only 1 of the 3. The coins you recieve from the boss are used to purchase said accessories or if you're lucky the Belt or earring may drop alongside the coins. Destroying more limbs weakens gollux further but does not yields another type of coin thats useless for progressing.
**Unlocked from completing the Black heaven and Heroes of Maple epic questlines to be exact located at Ereve's Conference Room accessible from mirror of dimension after doing a short lvl75 prequest referring to the conference available on the silver lightbulb located on the left-middle edge of your maple window.

But that's the thing. RNG chances of resets are inconsistent and can throw off rotation timings. Meanwhile, just learn mechs 4head. Doing CRA this week was a mess because people kept wiping to Pierre... with me being one of the last people standing consistently. People rely too much on invulns and cheese without ever learning the mech.
MSE I meant was WSE. But no, the guy talks about BOTH. Cooldown Skip Inner Ability AND Cooldown Reduction Hat. Hat, yeah that makes tons of sense. RNG chance at a reset on something you care about that could also reset the wrong things... yeah no. At least 20% Boss Damage I know what I am getting.
I know of Hellux, but I don't know what my threshold for fighting him is. I'm 11k Mainstat but if I go in, break only one core, then fight the head without actually doing damage... Well, there goes my normal clear. And iirc he's one of the 10mil Power Crystals.
Also wtf is flame advantaged lol

CD skip wont throw off youre rotation that much as maplestory bossing mostly revolved around burst rotations, which is usally the best time to pop all your buffs and strongest skills in a short period of time. An example is Marksman is a 2m burst class because majority of their skills cycles at that time. Another, DW would be a 3min burst class because majority of theyre skills are 3min. For DB, you're strongest skill is Blade storm, so you're essentially a 90s/3min burst class but depending on your party comp you can hold your burst for every 2 mins if need be. Even though Epic Adventure has a 120s cd and Asura is 60s cd, all your other buffs such as goddess blessing, decent skills, Last resort, Shadow walker are 3min or 90s. CD Skip doesn't affect the 5th job skills, but does work on most hyper skills and I-IV skills. In the odd case you cd skip epic adventure or asura, it should be up by your next "main" burst.
CDReduction will allow you to spam BoD and Tornado way more off in between your "main" burst and "off-burst" so that you can achieve higher damage uptime. If you see your burst buffs are almost off cd, by the time you cycle your buffs and hold Blade storm, BoD and Tornado will surely bee off cd. You want a CDR hat (CD hat) so that you can also spam BoD and Torndao every spawn cycle when grinding. Mobs have a general spawn cycle of about 8s, so with a 2+ second CD hat you can guarantee you're popping Bod every cycle and Tornado every other, and with a 4s, you can pop both every cycle.
Pierre is unfortunately one of the harder bosses to fight in CRA, maybe harder than Cvell for some classes. Thankfully in the lastest major update (newage) nexon got rid of buff freezers and now its free to ress in boss fights. The method nowadays to mow down pierre is to get its hp down to 31-32%, and wait for your burst to come back up, after which you intentionally die and ress without hat, bind and burst.
Flames refers to one of the stat breakdowns you can find on the item tooltip that breaks down an item's stats. An example is 8:41, your pink bean belt, has total stats colored blue, followed in parenthesis their Base stat + Flame state + Starforce stat. The difference between flame advantaged gear and "normal" gear is that You'll see a larger amount and variation in green stats, where as "normal" gear will have very minimal or mediocre stats comparatively. Strategywiki has a great section breakdown all the way you can enhance your gear. If you just want various calculators to play around with you can use SuckHards or Whackybeans calculators.
It's unfortunate that Gollux is one of the last remaining bosses that nexon has not yet updated to allow for multiple attempts because of its outdated design and the fact that breaking cores will drop coins (albeit the useless ones). It was only recently revamped around 2020 where nexon upscaled Gollux's hp to match normal Lomien values on Hell and CVell on Hard. It came at the cost of reducing the ability to run gollux 3 times a day to once (where carries would leave gollux at p3 with a sliver of hp left then leave, repeat for 2 others, but you can only "clear" and obtain the rewards from the heart once) But we benefitted from that revamp because it allowed us to buy spares of gollux accessories (back then if you boomed your superior ring you'd be bricked, also back then pendent would drop from all difficults, nowadays its only earrings and belt that from from harrd and hell).
So yeah there's a lot to learn from the game, and a lot of mindless grinding and fun to be had bossing. Hope you can stick with it. I dont know of any other game that can combine mmo aspects with power creep, number just keeps going up exponential growth, somewhat rewarding / satisfying progression and cute pixels as well as maplestory provides. I hope you get to keep playing and experience some of the fun shenanigan's that can happen with party Lomien, Luwill, ctene and beyond.

Hi! I'm a lategame-ish mapler and this is my first time watching your vids. I'm sorry you had a poor experience returning. I think you make great points about how there's no guides written for absolute newbs. I love this game and want other people to love it too, so it's refreshing to see a completely different perspective.
A few points I want to comment on (way longer than I expected):
    1. Your gripes with resolution/UI scaling should have been solved with the latest update (2 weeks ago). You can go up to 4k now, and choose to scale the UI or not. Though I'm not sure if this scales the buffs.
    2. I'll see so many new players want to use WASD, but this game's combat is keyboard only. I guess in other games you would use the mouse to move? But since maple moves with arrow keys that just doesn't make sense, as you always want to be moving and using skills. Remember that this is a platformer.
    3. I don't understand why you would need more quick slots. They would be only used to see cooldowns on skills, as you should probably just know where you other skills are. Even with 6th job, I still haven't filled out my expanded 2 rows. I'm not sure if you realize, but you can change which keys are shown in quick slots (e.g. Z instead of A)
    4. I'm surprised you didn't complain about the V matrix complexity lol.
    5. You seemed to focus on the meso cost of everything, but you didn't mention how to get mesos. There's many sources of income, for both newbs and end-game: grinding, boss mules, ursus, maple tour, etc. The standard gameplay loop is saving up a couple months and spending all when a specific starring/cubing event happens (basically cheaper). But yes, these are even more systems.
    6. Your emphasis on dmg% is a common misconception that newbies have. dmg% is not the same thing as final dmg%. This is most definitely a fault of the terms and the complexity of the damage formula, so it's completely valid.
    7. For gear progression, maple is fairly linear, every class basically goes phases through the same stages of gear. I'm wondering if you question on why CRA = BIS is due to FF being different in this regard?
    8. I agree with the fact that it's weird you get to 200 in 140 gear.
    9. I believe the cutscenes are hosted on YT and the client just loads them (it's def not a screen capture). This is so the videos don't have to be compiled with the game, reducing the download size. However they don't work a lot of the time. I don't understand why this is a huge pain point for you.
    10. I actually am a fan of legion/links as systems to explore the 49 classes. As commonly said, every class is viable. I love how each class actually feels unique. Sure there's bound to be some overlap, but I think it's wonderful that Nexon was (and still is) able to create such unique kits and aesthetics.
    11. The notion that 1-200 is just the tutorial (now 260 lol) is memed on because of it's absurdity. For experienced players 1-200 is nothing and only 1% of the total playtime. I can see how this can be intimidating and a turn off for newbies, but I don't think there's a way around it with how powercreep works.
    12. I appreciate your vulnerability of trying to be both a clear communicator, and a correct one.

  • @ZeroDividesByYOU
    @ZeroDividesByYOU 7 місяців тому +1

Wassup man. In the glossary of terms you were talking about you got a couple things slightly wrong so I will help out a bit.
When you were speaking about "MSE" what you really meant was WSE. It stands for Weapon/Secondary/Emblem. A subtle difference to be sure, but that's the general term. Those pieces of gear can gain (importantly) PERCENTAGE attack. This is extremely important because in addition to your weapon gaining you attack with its base stats, bonus stats (flames), and potentials, ALL of your other gear pieces begin giving attack as you star force them past 15*. This multiplication of your attack gives you a ridiculous power boost.
Also in general star force > potentials > flames. Star forcing gear you're going to keep for a while is a larger power boost (especially with a good W/S/E) than getting to 2 line main stat at legendary potential in most situations.
As for not knowing what CRA is or why it's useful... Here's the rundown.
CRA gear (specifically the top bottom and hat (for most classes, you can ask me about the exception if you're interested)) is considered BiS (Best in Slot). This means it is better than anything else in the game, and can be freely spent on without feeling like you'll replace the piece soon. This is technically no longer true as the newer bosses have been introduced and Eternal gear exists now... But... Yeah if you're at that point you don't need guides. Those are the most endgame bosses in the game. It's gonna be a couple years before you get there.
Anyway back to why CRA is important:
    1. It's BiS for 99% of players as explained above
    2. The REASON it's BiS is because of 2 things. The set effect (the weapon gets replaced later but 3 set is still better than the later options) is great. The other issue is that the gear sets that come after it (AbsoLab, Arcane Umbra) use OVERALLS as armor instead of top and bottom, meaning you lose an equip slot that has its own star force and its own potential lines. Not worth the tradeoff even with the better set effect.
    3. Being that CRA equips are level 150 gear, they are excellent for using as fodder for the transfer system, where you can transfer the epic (only epic, it'll go back down to epic if it's higher) potential and star force to a piece of gear 10 levels higher. The AbsoLab set is your next goal for progression, replacing your shoulder, glove, shoe, cape, and weapon (giving you 5 set abso). Given that the AbsoLab gear set is level 160, your CRA weapon will transfer quite nicely. Generally what you'll want to do is star force your CRA weapon to 16* and then transfer it to AbsoLab. This saves a lot of cost as acquiring CRA weapons is much less time consuming and much easier than getting backups of AbsoLab gear, and being 10 levels lower also makes them cost less to star force anyway. Just do remember you lose a star when you transfer, hence getting the CRA weapon to 16* first rather than 15*.
As for the other equips, a lot of the boss gear that the weekly bosses drop is in the 140 level range, and there are some random pieces of level 150 gear that bridge the gap from random stores or bosses (hard ranmaru actually drops a few of them I think) to AbsoLab. The idea here being you get, for example, pensalir shoes from mob drops in the arcane river and before, star it to 16, transfer that to the antique root boots, star them once more, and then transfer them again to your AbsoLab boots. Hey presto, now you have 15* AbsoLab equips. This can be done for most of the AbsoLab pieces.
As for how to acquire AbsoLab gear, there are two places to get them. The Dark World Tree and its associated boss Damien, and Haven (the Scrapyard) and its associated boss Lotus. Normal mode of both bosses drop cursed stones and s grade energy cores respectively, and the weekly quests that you get in those areas reward the common version of the stones and cores. Those will both be combined over the course of several weeks into coins, which are then used to purchase AbsoLab gear from the coin shops in each area.
The Hard mode versions of both Lotus and Damien (sometimes referred to by players together as Lomien) have a chance to drop instanced AbsoLab weapon and armor boxes, the use of which give you one piece of gear from the set for free (your choice of armor, the weapon box only gives the weapon and some classes only have 1 weapon option).
The process for buying the next set of gear is similar but for the bosses Lucid and Will (sometimes called LuWill) and these grant the Arcane Umbra set. Be warned, arcanes take a lot of money to get and enhance. They are level 200 equips and thus there is nothing that can be used as fodder material to transfer up to them. If they boom from star force, you will have to acquire more from boxes (quite rare) or building up the butterfly and spiderweb droplets from the bosses to buy another piece from the coin shop. This is why it is not recommended to push arcane gear past 17* until almost every other gear piece is 21* or 22*
As for your complains about resolution and the issues with the UI, the good news is they're working on it. The UI is being worked on for future updates and with the release of New Age, more resolutions and the options to scale the UI to your resolution are being introduced. Give em some slack, this game is built on spaghetti code from ancient times, and only fairly recently even went to a 64 bit client. Yeah, that's right. For almost 18 years the client couldn't support more than ~2 Gb of RAM usage and would frequently crash from memory leaks.

I found this video hilarious, especially the rant about bad guides. The whole time I was like "hopefully this makes him realize his guides are actually really good." I'm not sure who you consider *peers*, but I'm a mentor on midgardsormer, and savage raider, and I (and other mentors in middy novice network) recommend your guides all the time because they are so good for new players. As I got into the game, yours were the best, most comprehensive beginner guides I could find, and I love to recommend you to other people who want help with their jobs. If you look, you can find guides that give newbie tips, guides that go over job skills, guides that go over openers (but typically only for level cap), but yours are the only ones that have all that in one place.

On maplestory: well. I'm not gunna touch that game, I dont have enough nostalgia to survive it xD
On life-crisis things: your guides are very well made, with a huge amount of care and effort done to ensure they're as accurate as you can make them. Your peers do recommend them; I'm pretty sure I found you through a different guide maker. Your skill is apparent, the quality is high, and they're incredibly thorough, and that's obvious to anyone watching them, even if it's easier for us vets (who already know most of it) to see than newbies. You're depressed, and it's doing some terrible things to your self image. Depression has done similar things to me a few times, I've survived that by knowing that what I believe about myself simply doesn't add up to the truth (it doesn't stop me believing it, just gives me a better perspective). I hope it gets easier for you soon.

    Huh. That's a surprise.
First off, welcome back to Maple. Nobody ever quits this game, we just take long, extended breaks. I still play actively (level 275 on my main) and I can pretty much agree with a lot of what you said. This game is a marathon and super unfriendly to new/returning players. There are too many systems that the game barely explains and too little online guides explaining them well, especially with new players in mind. The game is old and it really shows at times. Hell, it wasn't even 64-bit until last year (for GMS at least). Meanwhile, the community... leaves a lot to be desired.
But like, grinding and bossing is satisfying in completely different ways. There's nothing like hitting a level milestone and reaching the next area to see the new visuals and hear the new music or struggling on a boss for so long and then finally getting it down. If you do decide to stick with the game it would be neat to hear your thoughts on some bosses (especially Lotus or Will). But if not, that's cool too.

    • @WeskAlber
      @WeskAlber  7 місяців тому +1

Oh for sure, the bosses look super amazing to look at. Lucid was SUPER cool to fight even if I couldn't understand how to dodge the dragon in P2. But any and all long term progress means turning it into a real life job. Maybe you find a job you enjoy playing, or you spend 141 levels hating things for an additional exp potion mule... to then have to grind 10 levels to hit 210 Link Skill. But then also 250 Legion SSS...
I'm just riding out the rest of the Halloween event atm to get the permanent outfit for if I ever do come back more. Maybe get a second cVellum carry and hopefully pick up a Fafnir weapon, since weekly reset is about to hit. Esfera and Will seem too far off still since I'm only at 510 AF and the maps leading to him are 640. Even if I reset Hyper Points and dumped it all into AF, I'd still be a little short I think.
Though I do kinda want to keep an eye out for the Legion Block event coming soon. So I guess break during Magic Slate, then do that. Evaluate my thoughts after.

Really interesting seeing maplestory from the perspective of someone brand new. I started playing maybe 6 or so years ago and playing very on and off (often with months or years in between) and totally agree that maplestory is buried underneath tech debt, content bloat and horribly outdated information, combined with the fact that nexon is a horrificaly money hungry company. It really puts into perspective exactly how polished ffxiv is and why its probably the leading mmo in the industry right now. However with that being said, theres just something that keeps drawing me back to maplestory, I feel like no other game has perfected the level of progression-grinding that maplestory has, admittedly a lot of these systems are super predatory and aim to induce fomo. And yet, despite all its transgressions, I still find it super fun to log in every now and then during an event and blast through a bunch of progress. Also for what its worth I actually think the link and legion system is really interesting, for a new player its super daunting and can definitely veer into the territory of "playing a game like its a job" but I really appreciate them going for something different in terms of permenant account progression, rewarding you for playing multiple classes. Overall its one of those games that is super hard to recommend getting in to but I can't seem to draw myself away from forever.

Heh, I always loved the artstyle of this game as well as the music, it led me to playing it for the first time a few years ago and it was fun! I stopped playing before it stopped being fu. The grinding part did feel nice, repeatedly going around the map nuking things and maybe trying to do it even faster is somewhat enjoyable for me, but the enjoyment comes with a storm cloud behind it that I've learned to recognize and dip before it starts to sour the experience (Thanks to years of F2P MMO experience)
Most importantly though, your complaints about the guides have scratched an itch of mine which I didn't even realize was there until now. For context, I have always been the type to look up information online, and with my history having such wonders as Ragnarok Online (which tells you jack all about anything and everything, even where to find job quests) and Elsword (Which currently has so many systems on its gearing and progress it's a doozy) guides were a cornerstone of my game experience, to the point where these days, looking for a good (And I do mean **good**, I've been in the biz long enough to smell the bullshit) guide creator is one of the first things I do in any game community.
Sometimes though, I end up in the situation you found yourself in on Maplestory and I'm currently facing with Aether Gazer and it does kill me inside a little bit. I end up learning on my own and through osmosis/community discussions, but there's always the though that "We need something better than this for the game
Hearing someone who I genuinely admire the work of present the same issues I have but with even more clarity on what the problem is, especially due to the insight from someone who actually creates guides is something I never realized I needed
Every time I am faced with one of those situations I can't help but feel the urge to start writing but I always get held back by a different kind of impostor syndrome which for the sake of both of us I'm not going to get into
All that being out there though, I hope you enjoy the next few weeks or maybe months you spend on Maplestory, hell I might even give it a shot again later, give my Mob Psycho Lv100 a visit, I'll see you around!

As a long time ff14 player and recent returner to maplestory within the last few months after playing it off and on since release, I’m having a blast with maple. I hyper burned a paladin to 250 as my main currently 252 almost to 253, and my total level for legion is approaching 4000 almost. Last time I played maple was 3 years ago on reboot and I only got to 2000 legion. I started basically near fresh on a regular server (which had a zero and a beast tamer already at 100 cause I made them when available many years ago) and now I’m twice the legion and leagues more powerful than I ever was in any period of time that I’ve ever played this old game

i played Maplestory sometime 19-20 years ago when it was new. back when there were only the 4 base classes (pirate wasnt out yet) and no one was max level. i remember checking the leader boards every day on the website, watching the race between Fangblade and Curryishot to 200. i was rooting for Curry because they were on my server but Fangblade ended up being worlds first (GMS at least i think) level 200.
then there was me, playing thief and was told by my friend to put my level up stat points into STR and not DEX, so when we hit level 30, got our class upgrade and went into the Monster Carnival and getting decimated because my damage was so shit. he asked what i did wrong....i got so mad at him cause HE was the one who told me to put stats into STR. me being a young kid at the time took forever to reach level 30 so all my time was basically wasted without spending real money, which i didnt want to bug my parents for. so i quit the game for a while
came back throughout the years to check out new jobs and updates, but never made it far

Seeing a maplestory video from you was a moment of total whiplash, pretty much a "huh, I know that name" Over the years i've ran into you in ffxiv, funny enough you were actually one of the people that got me interested in dragoon way back when. The Maplestory new player experience is unfortunately quite questionable, you make some very good points about the dangers of misinformation. I think its especially important to try and be as accurate as possible when making some sort of guide for a game that offers you little help to begin with.

Not sure if this helps you in any way; when I was trying to learn a new job after maxing my SAM back when I started, you were always my go to. I'd go "Ohh shi...WEEEEESK, HAAALP, I forgot the rotation", I wasn't looking for the meta or min maxing but just the basic rotations and skills and how they work so that once I got a feel for the new job I was learning at the time so that I could at least get used to the skill floor for that job till I was more experienced at it for more optimal rotations and such. TL;DR, Thanks Wesk, thanks a lot for all your guides and help, keep doing you and take care ❤

As someone who recently picked this game back up and has been enjoying it, I get it! I think nothing in this you said was explicitly wrong, I disagree with the severity of some of the complaints, but they're still there. I got bored of the gameplay of FFXIV and now that endwalker is done I'm okay putting it down for a while. Sometimes I just want to jump around a silly little mushroom game.
I think the thing with MapleStory is that if your goals are to get through content and grind like most mmos, it's bad. But I play it like a fidget toy while I watch my shows or listen to podcasts. It relaxes my ADHD brain a bit which is nice.

As someone who played maple on their childhood and recently returned to the game, I agree that it is very overwhelming how many systems there are, especially in regular nonreboot servers. That being said the systems were easily understandable after I spent some time looking through them, and I was lucky enough to have friends who could explain acronyms like what cra was to me.
On the other hand I see you compare maple to FFIV a lot at the end of the video and I'd have to disagree on several points. I tried FFIV since some of my friends play it, but I couldn't get into it because the camera and controls were very unintuitive to me. The entire game required way too much spec and just became an unplayable laggy mess in towns, and the storyline was hard to follow, similar to when I first started maple.
Most people would say FFIV looks good, but personally, the art style was too dark and generic for my taste. I watched a video on the top MMORPGS and basically every game looked the same with a realistic fantasy looking aesthetic. The music is also likewise pretty generic. Since maple could run smoothly, was easier to learn, and has a more appealing and unique aesthetic, it was a much more appealing game to me. Can't comment on the endgame for either game though, but from what I can tell, maple is a lot more grueling while FFIV is a lot more manageable. Doesn't matter too much as a rather casual player anyways

Here's a nice, lengthy comment to give you a better idea about the game in a few different aspects ^^
31:49 For context: like other MMOs and games based on korea, they get any and all updates first in the korean version as the original game devs are in korea, and even have a korean test server.
It's funny you mentioned this because an update in that test server came out a few days ago with a long-awaited UI overhaul that is much better looking and informative than the one everyone has now, and it also includes options to change the overall UI size, and in the context for that update, the korean devs said our current UI was made specifically for 800x600 resolution and didn't think ahead in possible higher resolutions whatsoever even tho higher resolutions had already existed for plenty of time back when they made the current UI lmao.
33:35 This is usually due to certain maps being intrisically laggier than others even without necessarily being more crowded maps, and you only really get to know those maps either by first-hand experience or asking others, but to my knowledge the maps I know for a fact have this happen are Ardentmill (the map where you do crafting), indeed crowded maps like hen1 (short for henesys channel 1, for future possible references) and ALL event-exclusive maps with no exception in my 3 year experience.
33:41 And the game usually only crashes without input in the cases of maintenances, be it hotfixes, small updates or major updates, with input however I've only seen it often crash (30%~ chance, RNG even for crashes ik) when trying to access the Cash Shop hence aptly named Crash Shop by many, and in a recent update (about a month ago) it would crash almost guaranteedly the minute I started doing my dailies in the first map I teleported to, and I sent MULTIPLE frustated tickets to Nexon about it and it never happened since. So yeah, it's a very unstable game lmao
36:02 As someone with 8.7k legion who's fully played every class up to lv200 with the exception of a couple, I can confidently say that Phantom is one of the most clunky, non-intuitive, weak and overall unfun classes in the entire game. I've heard they're better in other regions but in ours it's pure ass. The skill steal mechanic would be so cool if phantom could actually get the passives that the class he's stealing from depends on in order to make the mobbing skill of that class actually good, but he doesn't. And to add insult to injury he gets a direct damage nerf on almost all skills he steals when it's already extremely restrictive (and even arbitrary) to begin with on which skills he can steal. It's a pure joke of a class and without a doubt bottom 3 classes in the entire game and in dire need of a rework. It's a real shame that Phantom happens to have one of, if not the best, Link Skill in the entire game due to the number of class it is essential in with very few not needing crit rate whatsoever like Dual Blade (Shadow Meld OP). Phantom has solidified himself as one of biggest memes talked about in the entire community.

      1. Holy crap what?! Someone mentioned them doing a UI update but not about the size!
      2. Okay, that makes sense. I did stop trying to use Ardentmill because it seemed worse, but idk if I've ended up finding those other maps, or if it really is just constant for me.
      3. Nah, it's just been crashing a lot for me. I think it was the... Chu Chu Island cutscene with the UA-cam video? That crashed when it tried to load. The one in the video is the current Halloween event. I was farming some Charm cuz why not. I logged right back in, as I have for every crash. And yeah, I've seen Crash Shop happen a few times. One yesterday when I was cashing in Reward Points.
      4. lmao, at least it isn't me. Too bad he seems kinda likable. Tragic backstory that re-frames the "heroic thief ladies man." He uses the same line as he used on what was clearly the love of his life, on Cygnus in his cutscenes. And it's like, wow, I've genuinely not seen that before. The tragic backstory is usually something else!

@@WeskAlber Oh yeah forgot to give you another important tid bit of info: IDR (Item Drop Rate) familiars do NOT stack. I'm unsure if different levels of IDR lines do stack, as in "small IDR" and "large IDR" lines, but the most common situation is finding small IDR line fams and thinking they stack, but they unfortunately (or fortunately since it's less dependency and farming) realising they don't stack after testing by checking your Detailed Stats window before and after activating the double IDR fams.

Never played MapleStory so I was a bit curious but not enough to actually play it. It's funny, I've been playing Fate/GO for a very, very long time (entirely F2P with zero cash investment) and it has had a similar problem with just layers and layers of new mechanics over the years that makes onboarding new players much more difficult - not that I would actually genuinely recommend anybody pick up that game either. FFXIV has somehow avoided this by either scrapping old mechanics entirely or instead of making new mechanics a part of core gameplay they're their own thing like deep dungeons or Eureka. So as a sprout I can just totally ignore the stuff I don't care to learn about and still play the main parts of the game at a competent level.
