- In the mid-90s, Manag Entertainment greenlit the licenses for a ton of cheap, schlocky anime in a desperate big to recoup the costs of co-producing Ghost in the Shell. 1994's Bounty Dog was one of those anime and, out of all them, it's certainly one of the most yellow.

KB is his name and talking about old animation is his game! If you want deep analysis and history on the realm of retro anime and old animation, then you've come to the right place. Be warned though. Being a possum means he loves consuming trash, media-based or otherwise. - Фільми й анімація
The colors definitely aren't done via filter. I have cels from this (one of which includes the matching background) and it's all actually painted yellow. I doubt it was a cost-cutting measure, more likely they were going for an eerie "this is definitely not Earth" vibe. Which could work in an anime set on a lonely, broken-down spaceship; but not so much in a touristy city on the moon.
The original dialogue is way less 3deep5me cringe than the English dub. Amusingly the dub tries to explain some things - like how in the hell there's WIND on surface of the moon - that the original just never addresses.
Huh. In a way, Manga during this time sounds like Cannon Films during their 1980’s heyday.
Cool. That Manga logo is pretty much a seal of approval from my childhood.
MAAANGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
"Beer-and-Curry Anime." Emphasis on beer because watching certain clips of Bounty Dog is like looking through a glass of Miller High Life.
🍻
The plot of this OVA is all over the place. Then again, this is from the same guy who wrote The SoulTaker after all.
>Manag Entartainment
Why Yes, I remember their works. Shell in the Ghost, Stere Gifther II V, Delrine. Great stuff.
Rayearth
I’m actually a fan of the yellow filter, it makes this anime very stylized and brings out the cyberpunk aesthetic even more imo
I see the piss filter predates Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
That background melody is the stuff of legend and definitely one of my favorite final fights in a video game. Long live einhander!
Also, I lol'd at the melody's reference 🤣
I didnt know Dog the Bounty Hunter had an anime. hmmm. learn something new every day.
We all have our personal biases, it is refreshing to see anyone who will admit to it (here on the subject of US media). My bias here is that I liked Bounty Dog even tho it was all atmosphere and no substance, just this hard boiled character experiencing and inflicting excessive amounts of pain. When i think about what I can liken the yellow filter to I can only think of really old movies that weren't so much black and white as they were monochromatic, like Nosferatu, you know the one. Doesn't help the film but still tolerable I guess. Anyway great work, had no idea Megumi Hayashibara was in this!
What I enjoyed most about this review? All the Pink Floyd references.
Indeed this OVA lacks of fleshed out content/the points made here but back in the day i had a quite good time watching this one...mostly for the atmosphere and visuals. there is a drama-CD which could be something to look up for the fan...and if one understand Japanese of course.
Anyone notice the animation character design have the same template for Tekkaman Blade?
Three OVA’s I’d love to see reviewed here are M.D.. Geist, Hades Project Zeorymer and the 1989 Guyver OVA series.
Damn I love you're non anime related edits to the review.
Aaaaand now I have to go watch that K.O. Beast review because I absolutely need context for that clip with the bird singing Nelly Furtado.
Y'know it was just an initial hunch when you were talking about this being distributed by a British company, but then after hearing the voice acting for Ines, and going to google it, it's amusing to learn this is the second anime you've reviewed to feature Teresa Gallagher in a major role.
References to King Crimson AND Pink Floyd?!? Heck yeah!
Back in the early 2000’s, Manga Entertainment was one of my gateways to anime outside of the ones I watched on Toonami, KidsWB, and Foxkids (and it’s successors FoxBox, and Jetix). While Central Park Media was there, Manga and ADV films were my main outlets for more adultish anime, and subs.
I'm watching this video thru the beer glass.
Have you ever heard of “Lets Nupu Nupu” seems like a precurser to Excel Saga & Bobobobobobo
Except with a lot more Middle Aged Pedophile Lady in it.
I used to have this on VHS 😭
I feel like this ova wanted to tell a more thoughtful story but wasn't able to and as result this is what we got. It's unfortunate. If given a chance this Anime ova could have been better written and fleshed out more . Not saying it would be a masterpeice like Jin-Roh or Angel's Egg but it could have been pretty good atleast . They were going for something more experimental it seems like with the color palate and all. Unfortunately that didn't seem to translate well to viewers watching it. I think the color yellow is interesting although I probably wouldn't use it as the main color palate. I would use reds , purples or blues. Yellow is unqiue choice that I haven't seen done before . Dosen't quite fit though because people instantly think of piss and it's not an attractive color for this kind of setting .
where can i find your intro song for your videos would like to here full version
Those two in the thumbnail look like the twins from don't hug me I'm scared
When will we getting your review of
The Dagger of Kamui, KB?
Gotta love that vintage Bakewell/Roubicek Manga dubbing! =/
what is the name of the song in the opening
They must have called this "Bounty Dog" because it's shot only in colors that dogs can see.
Manga Entertainment in a way was like the Miramax of anime. I mean their weren’t creepy and awful like the Weinstein’s but the company had a trend of having a lot of the best anime in the industry while also having a lot of the worst in the anime industry similar to Miramax having landmark films while also stuff like stuff like any animated or foreign film being bastard by them.
I like the Review. 🤟🏻🤟🏻
"It's all piss"
Put that on the box cover.
Buen video
Video 2 of asking you to do legends of the galactic heroes
Hope you get around to the 90s Capcom fighting game anime, Street Fighter The Movie and maybe the Darkstalkers OVA series.
And here I thought Deus Ex: Human Revolution was the only super yellow filter piece of media! Congrats Bounty Dog, you take the cake!
Thing is, Human Revolution made it look good.
It helps the game is also written good and... is good.
@@sebastiancintron29 Oh yea don't get me wrong, I agree, its one of my favorite games, haha
I just remember when people thought it was too much, but now we got something else to point at for being "too much yellow"
Trend setting anime to get the plot of a game (Bionic Commando 09) and a movie (Moonfall). So at least 2 people somewhere somehow in high enough positions to be connect to those things..... not good things but connected none the less.
Manga Entertainment ruined a lot of anime with their terrible dubs. They definitely focused heavily on the "JAPANIMATION IZ BOOBIES AND BLOOD" angle, and tried to combine it with some weird edgy lowbrow UK attitude. They pretty much encapsulated this in their mascot "Manga Man", who ironically did not resemble anything from manga or anime at all, but something out of an 80's/90's UK punk magazine.
Ghost in the shell was a good dub from manga video at the time.
Can you do a review of Yu Yu Hakusho the movie and say that the dub is kinda of a mixed reaction.
-ahem-
HELLO SNAKE!
GOD...
I grew a grey hair every time I saw that NC-17 censor...
6:29 is that what he looks like? I've never seen his actual face before. Just the avatar illustrations he uses. Not even MAL has it
Yes
That's actually Toshihiro Kawamoto, not Masamune.
It wasn't until last year did I learn that Manga Entertainment was NOT American and I felt kinda betrayed. All the inserts and address on the back of the box were for an American address...I think.
Must have been their US office.
Whenever I hear "man-ga", I think "it's pronounced mahn-ga".
Whenever I hear "mahn-ga", I think "it's pronounced 'man-ga".
why's everything so yellow
The same reason why The Simpsons are yellow.
To quote Master Shake from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.... "Why wouldn't it be?"
haha technolyze the prequel
Have you ever considered reviewing Fullmetal Alchemist. Granted it's not the most retro, but pretty good none the less, with some decent time between the 2003 adaptation, & the one I haven't watched yet, Brotherhood.
What do you guys in thde comments think?
Hearing about King Crimson in an anime video unrelated to JoJo? Is that even legal?
Imagine if we got Blame! the Manga level of writting for this Ova. It could have been better and that's what's disappointing. I wouldn't call this the worse Anime in existence. There are worse Anime out there in my opinion. This ova just disappointed me more than anything . I wish it was given more time to tell a more thoughtful story that's thoughtprovoking.
3:41 | Ahhhh, Genocyber from the Violence Canon
12:02 | Okay, seriously. Screw the Super Bowl.
14:05 | An overuse trope
Why is she doing this? Because the plot says so! #FilmBrain
