Link's Awakening taking place after the Oracle games makes a lot more sense than placing it before. In the finale of a linked game in the Oracle games, Link sets out to sea. Link's awakening starts out with Link being out at sea, sailing into a storm and getting shipwrecked. They just tie together perfectly this way.
It should also be noted that in the original Japanese manual, its stated in Link's Awakening, that Link was returning from his journey of adventure in foreign nations. Like, it came out first, but they set it up perfectly to take place after the oracle games.

I know it's been like... 2.5 years from when this came out BUT... The Zora in the downfall timeline are two separate species: River Zora and Ocean Zora. I want to say it's explained in one of the Oracle games... Love what you do Matt!
The thing is though, Breath of the Wild also canonically features Majora's Mask and the Fierce Deity's Mask, with the power inside them gone. At least so far as we know, this has only ever happened in the child timeline.

BenjaminCD t as fait une vidéo de deux minutes où tu fais que lister des jeux, ya aucune explication à propos des connexions entre eux ou comment ça marche tout ensemble mdrrr
Just wanted to mention that the zora are physically far more varied in both color and shape in BOTW than any other single game. As such, it's possible that particular feature could be a hold over from when they were monsters and enemies of hylians.
Not to mention, in Breath Of The Wild, King Dorephan seems to be non hostile towards Link, but his advisor Muzu (whom I've heard gamer Andrew from The Andrew Collette Show jokingly call Stingray face. I love that guy, a married gamer who happens to be a father and an editor with a sense of humor? A UA-cam gamer after my own heart 😂❤) clearly has disdain towards Link as well as untrusting of most Hylians, only relenting to trust Link after Prince Sidon proves that Link's Zora armor was made by Princess Mipha specifically for Link (whom she had an unrequited crush on, poor girl). If that doesn't give an indication that the timeline is mashed up, I don't know what does..
@The Dragon Ball God Uh, how is it debunked if Four Swords Adventure is apart of the child timeline? He didn't need to cover Four Swords, because it was doing it's own thing, and just made it so that there were four Links.
There is actually a lot more evidence that Hyrule was once a great sea in BotW then just rock salt. There are giant skeletons of once ocean dwelling leviathans all over the place.
But how do we know they're from the ocean? There was also a leviathan of the skies: Levias Maybe these same leviathans are the same creatures as him. But when they died, they fell to the surface
MatPat: *says Nintendo should know its timeline they created* Nintendo: *says Hyrule Warriors isn't canon to the timeline* MatPat: *proceeds to include it in said timeline*
well nintendo probably never thought about a connection to the timeline they just figured that the game was so different that they shouldn't even include it. But maybe if someone at nintendo sees this the game will (hopefully) become a part of the timeline
When Nintendo revealed a couple of decades ago that there was a timeline, I think what they meant was that there was "somewhat" of a timeline. Basically, some games are direct sequels and fit together well. Where the "somewhat" comes in is that some games are unrelated to any other game, and in that case Nintendo tries to force a connection. They do that by saying the game takes place many generations after some other game they choose to force a connection to, and also by making up events that supposedly happened in-between the 2 games that there is no game for. I believe the above is also what Nintendo has been trying to tell us over the last few years or so, only they're clearly not being as straightforward about it as I was. You said it yourself in the video, that this "we want fans to come up with their own interpretations" thing is being said because they themselves don't really know. They did their best to try and piece it all together in a way that makes sense, but they know it's very imperfect because their main concern has never been the timeline. Sometimes they just want to make a Zelda game, and they probably feel that trying too hard to make it connect to other games restricts them in what they can do creatively.
Honestly wouldn't surprise me. While HW does fit the timeline pretty well I still don't quite like this idea. I would prefer a fleshed out game where a Link has to travel between the timelines and officially recombine them. Kind of like an oracle of ages/seasons-like game but with timelines. Each timeline would have its own map with similarities and differences compared to the rest and eventually you get to merge them all into one complete map. In HW the timelines get merged but if my memory serves me right, the timelines were split up again in the end. That would mean the other timelines still exist....but the child timeline now has influences from other timelines affecting it. I had the WiiU version of HW so it's been a while since I played it but I don't think my memory is that much off. I do find the argument compelling though and I am also quite impressed by how so far the comments have been extremely positive to this idea. I'm used to people rushing to the comments to trash the theory. Well done, by everyone.
@@alexp6667 you really didnt need to think too hard about the hollow knight game if you played it to be honest, it was such a dumb, and horribly bad theory.
@@Nanashi20 I have already beaten the game once, doing it again in Steel Soul, and finishing it in Godmaster mode. I had trouble following the story, so i had trouble denying the theory, but then it hit me. If we are the king, then why are we siblings to Horneta and the Hollow Knight, wouldnt they know what their fathers presence was like? If we are the king, how could we have united the voidheart? It cannot be from simple things such as "Oh, he has been reincarnated as a sibling" no, the Voidheart allows you to command the void beings, beings completely oppossed to the power of the king. If we were the king, the task would be impossible, if we were a child of the king, we have the ability of sacrificing one part of our body for that union, the "Light" part.
Well that’s basically just right after botw, since it was gonna be a dlc for it originally and all the characters even remember link from botw, unless they release another game
@@WiisonicHedgehogGamer Except that that's not how divergent timelines generally work. Divergent timelines rarely, if ever re-converge into a singular timeline. It would take an incredible level of coincidence and time for three radically different timelines to converge into a single one that makes any semblance of sense with some kind of time travel shenanigans.
Matpat: ok repeat after me Hyrule Warriors Nintendo: Hyrule Warriors Matpat: is cannon Nintendo: is cannon Matpat: and connects all timelines Nintendo: and connects all timelines Matpat: *Hyrule Warriors is cannon and connects all timelines* Nintendo: *Create a new Hyrule Warriors 100 years before Breath of the Wild*
Hyrule warriors isn't canon, won't be canon and doesn't connect all the games. You would know if you actually played the game instead of parroting matpat.
Here’s my theory. Nintendo makes references to every timeline of Zelda in the Breath of the Wild game for a reason. Supposedly, the whole timeline takes place over 10,000 years ago, in an era Breath of the Wild calls the “Era of Myth”. It could be said that the reason all these timelines are present is because Breath of the Wild is so far ahead in the future that the earlier entries in the timeline all occur in the Era of Myth, so far in the past that Breath of the Wild practically becomes its own new story. It’s actually something that parallels reality. In the real world, civilizations like the Sumerians and the Mayans who existed thousands of years ago are still left in mystery. To this day, we still haven’t deciphered these civilizations and eras of time. Breath of the Wild may have been designed to be a story where the original legends of Zelda are so old that they’ve been practically forgotten by Hyrule, and a new story of the hero begins, slowly uncovering the mysteries of past civilizations like the Zonai and the ancient tribes. A different approach to an age-old story.
its for sure canon, the creator of zelda is just lying, anytime Nintendo has company that works on any of their main IP's they have direct involvement, so yes i believe Hyrule is canon and Nintendo needs stop denying it, plus its a great game
After the release of Age of Calamity, the whole timeline thing gets funnier. Since Hyrule Warriors combines all three timelines to create the BOTW one. But the newest game creates two new timelines. One where Link and the Champions, (including their descendants of the future), defeat Ganon, and the other being the exact events of BOTW. So, Nintendo finally fixed the timeline by having BOTW be a combo of all three, but then creates two new ones.
However, now that we've seen the sequel trailers, we've got a new problem. Following the events of botw, zelda and link find ganondorf, possibly kill/stop him and therefore end the calamity ganon cycle because ganondorf is the one creating them. In the aoc timeline, however, it's unclear whether or not they find ganondorf. If they don't, they will be stuck in a perpetual loop where calamity ganon returns every 10,000 years unless someone discovers (and defeats) ganondorf under hyrule castle
I like the theory that it has been so long that all of the events in the timelines became an inevitability, and so Breath of the Wild happens in every timeline. It’s possible that Breath of the Wild takes place millions of years after the other games. It is purely speculative tho, so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was easily debunked.
i think the zelda games are just different generations of link, not that the previous link is the father of the next link but a future generation of a green clad blonde haired silent hero.
Can’t wait to see how tears of the kingdom changes things when it releases. Also it’s funny how they reunited the timelines for ganon to win in the prologue to BOTW and then release age of calamity just to create an alternate timeline where they win before link has to be put in the shrine of resurrection.

This theory actually makes sense and fits nearly perfectly into the timline... I can totally see this being canon at some point in future. Phenomenal theory Mat! you've done well, kid.
I mean even Kingdom Hearts, as confusing as it is, has a definitive timeline that's one straight shot from start to finish. Zelda, on the other hand, is all over the place.
I love how MatPat didn't bring up the fact that, in Hyrule Warriors, both Ravio and Marin are playable characters. Ravio is from a Link Between Worlds, and Marin is from Links Awakening, both games are from the Dowlfall timeline.
MatPat: I just made your timeline make sense, Nintendo. Nintendo: H-How did you do this? Why did you use a game that we said to discard?! Scott: Heh heh...
It would make sense to but the botw2 trailer probably came recentky and matpat took a lot of time beforehand making the theory before the trailer came out
With the Divine Beast reference from Midna and how the various Champions had been tasked to pilot (and/or train in) one, it reminds me of the dungeon Link can complete within the Shrine of Resurrection as part of the Champion's Ballad. I was extremely disappointed that the architecture was not in resemblance of a wolf! Such a missed opportunity!
I dislike convergence theory since its impossible you cant have all timelines combine sonce all contradict each other, the inevitable theory being that timelines are seperate but have same outcome makes more sense to me.
Auramaster 206yt In the end, it’s not all that necessary for the timelines to merge perfectly in this scenario, even without playing HW and just watching the visuals presented in MatPat’s video, you can see how this happened, entire locations got magically phased in an out of the entire landscape, and somethings just plain got replaced or destroyed... but I suppose that all got fixed anyway.
@@auramaster2068 But then that still wouldn't make sense. How would all three end the same way, separately, when you have one race appearing twice in two different forms (the Zorah and Rito), or how you see the Twilight mirror shards and can get Midna's helmet but the existence of the Rito and Koroks mean the world flooded and so Twilight Princess couldn't' have happened at the same time. It only all makes sense if the timeline is somehow brought back together, somehow. And with a high fantasy series with actual goddesses that exist and affect the world I'm not sure trying to apply scientific logic to it is gonna work. This is the same universe where a sentient moon nearly destroyed the planet, and even though it was literally only feet from hitting the ground the planet suffered no negative impact from the gravitational forces pulling at each other, at all.
Either the creators of Ocarina of Time planned this, or it accidentally happened and the Zelda franchise was still able to make it work without anyone knowing it.
Actually it kind of makes sense, The Timeline of Power would be the defeated timeline where The Hero has to, time and again, defeat Ganon and his triforce of Power as the main goal of the game, overcoming the sheer power of Ganons dominion. The Child Timeline would be the Timeline of Wisdom where the hero is tasked with solving the complex problems of Hyrule/Twilight Realm often with a more direct role from the triforce of Wisdom bearer or princess. The Adult timeline is the Timeline of Courage where the Hero is often tasked with Exploring a vastly different and open worlds/times in an ever changing landscape with a focus on survival and exploration. Bear with me, what if in Ocarina of Time, the sages fractured the universe into a multiverse through the temple of time on purpose after Link defeated Ganon, creating the three possible paths in an attempt to separate the tri-force so that it could not exist in the same plane at the same time ever. Each timeline is governed by a single aspect of the Tri-force as planned by the Sages. However, they did not think that each Triforce piece had the power to create a representation of a full triforce in their respected universe. Since the triforce in each universe was created by a fragment of the original triforce they are far weaker though which lends itself the fact that the Ganons, and powers of the triforce wielders in the different timelines seem weaker and less all powerful. Once the multiverse is brought back together during the cataclysm of Hyrule Warriors, via the Triforce of Wisdom's manipulation of Cia's emotions, we now have a completed triforce back in a single plane of existence after a millennia of time. You see the Tri-Force is that, a force with three equal parts, it yearns to be whole, wants to be whole, so what if the Child Timeline was the Tri-force of wisdom nurturing and manipulating the abilities/heros/princesses, of its universe until they had the power to merge the multiverse back together. With the full power of the triforce available once again, it lead to both an era of great technological advancements, prosperity, and eventual doom. Ganon as a natural force of evil in the world was bound to be revived again after Hyrule warriors and when he was, he was taken down by The Hero and the Princess time and again until Ganons guile gave him the upper hand. The power of Ganon, the Princess, and the Hero in BoTW feel absolutely massive compared to many of the past games, because the Tri-Force is whole in this universe. Ganon can infect technology, is gargantuan, acting like a wild savage beast brimming with power. The Princess's light is able to hold Ganon for years upon years, containing most of his power to a single location, and The Hero in BoTW has an incredibly strong tool kit of powers thanks to his ability to harness the lessons and abilities/items gifted to him by the trials. This probably makes no sense but I had to type it out after I read your comment. And as nintendo says, as long as I can imagine it, it is true :D

I think Brian David Gilbert solved this timeline officially, because Monopoly is the most important piece of lore

But that’s not a theory, that’s just exactly what BOTW already says… lol

After the release of Age of Calamity, the whole timeline thing gets funnier.
Since Hyrule Warriors combines all three timelines to create the BOTW one.
But the newest game creates two new timelines.
One where Link and the Champions, (including their descendants of the future), defeat Ganon, and the other being the exact events of BOTW.
So, Nintendo finally fixed the timeline by having BOTW be a combo of all three, but then creates two new ones.
Eh it’s better than three
At least we know where we are
Besides, that way we get more varied games
It's more like alternate reality than timeline
Oh, for F*** sake.
@@stachu5049 so is fallen hero, yet that exists.

Hawks why ?
It would make sense to but the botw2 trailer probably came recentky and matpat took a lot of time beforehand making the theory before the trailer came out
Exactly! It all makes sence now!!!!
I agree, because there is a strong resemblance there.
Such a missed opportunity!
so basically Ocarina of time acts like the divergence of the timelines and Hyrule Warriors is the convergence
I dislike convergence theory since its impossible you cant have all timelines combine sonce all contradict each other, the inevitable theory being that timelines are seperate but have same outcome makes more sense to me.
@@auramaster2068 it is possible
@@auramaster2068 you're thinking logically and scientifically, but anything is possible with magic so...

*This damn storyline is more tangled up than my earphone cables after putting them in my pocket*
Kind of reminds me of Triforce... 3 different pieces of the story eventually become 1.
Shut the front door
You could be on to something!!!!
Well Gannon has the power piece and is the ruler of the downfall timeline.... so the downfall timeline represents the power.

They still haven't mentioned Legend of Zelda Monopoly's position in the timeline. Cowards, the lot of them.
I'm more curious about Zelda Chess.
Zelda clue also needs a look
Its between Hw and botw
Nice BDG reference
The longest Zelda game of all time
Actually makes perfect sense and Age of Calamity doesn't interrupt this theory at all, you just put it after Hyrule Warriors and 100 years before BotW in the Reunited Timeline. Bravo.
*One week later*
Nintendo reveals that Hyrule Warriors is CANON!
We can dream. Problem is that the original characters from Warriors are owned by Koei Tecmo, not Nintendo. But again, we can dream.
I wish. Favorite game
Spiderman is now canon in the mcu, so yes, we can dream
@@H2SO4pyro Thats... not... never mind
Hyrule Warriors was bomb, it’s canon to me. xD I’m using my iiiimaaaginaaatioon.
This theory is interesting because it would also explain the locations in Breath of the Wild named after characters from all 3 timelines.
Wow really? I didn’t know! It’s not like any of us watched the video or anything...
@@someguy9496 Look, everybody! It's the party pooper! Here to ruin your day once more!

HE'S COMING!
Considering they said Warriors is non-cannon, I wonder if Tears of the Kingdom will be the game that unites them all? I think I've heard it's supposed to be pre-breathe, so it would potentially fit there. Curious to see when it comes out next month!
Love rewatching these old videos. Less to see "how wrong you were" as a lot of comments do, but really to see how the games and channel have grown. It's great to see, and I'm happy to be along for the ride!
