it's amazing how a colour can change the look of a bike, the black tank and fairings, etc... make it look really special and tie in with the black springs on the rear suspension, can't wait to see the finished art work on it. Great job.
Thanks Woody, you're right, its important to tie a few things in so it sits right... most bikes have more black on them than any other colour, so its pretty easy on this one.. !
as soon as I saw the glossy finish on that tank I really hoped you'd go with that. Absolutely stunning - can't wait for the next video. What an entertaining project! Learning a lot about a quality rattle can paint job - thanks!
Thanks Jesse, its just the base coat, once my buddy gets here to do the art work and the clearcoat its going to start looking a lot more professional.. Thanks for your support, its much appreciated.. Del.
I agree with the gloss black, looks great Del can't wait to see the full paint job.
Thanks again with the emails about my headlight, you go above and beyond good sir.
Hope Penny is feeling better
You're most welcome buddy, glad we could help, and thanks for your kid words my friend..
little trick for ya :D .. if you put your hand into a clear plastic bag .. the ones for the fridge ect .. close your eyes. then you can feel every single imperfection there is, it will enhance the imperfections :) . try it out see if it works for you, one more thing, for better atomisation on the paint. try placing them in "hot" water so the pressure in the can goes up :) , awsome work as allways ofc
The Paint looks good, glad your going gloss black on this one. Sure it'll look even better when Mackie has finishised with it.
Yep, it'll be a good job in the hands of the Maestro..
👍the makeshift hangers glad I'm not the only one who does the same using the bunjie cords for paint when there's nothing else at hand
No clean up or mess! It looks very prof. and neat, good job with the rattle cans.
Lots of clean up Alex, but just not worth filming..lol
While sitting to cure, would you recommend a cover so no dust settles issues?
The tank looks absolutely wonderful in gloss black!
Superb paint job. I'm sure that you are extremely proud of the finish that you have achieved. And rightly so! Proper job.
Thanks mate, so far so good, but it aint over till you're pouring the fuel in for your first ride aye..lol
Any particular reason you prefer to use a spray can rather than a compressor-based spray gun? Easier to use? Less waste? Or because it's a base coat, a spray can is acceptable? Cheers.
Hi Richard, for a few coats of base black, cans are all i need buddy.. the minimum quantity of neat paint i can buy is 1/4 liter.. and thats 5 times what i needed for this, plus i would have had to buy thinners with it, and hardener... so its a lot of grief for just base coat, we'll do the rest with proper equipment though...
Well done, I enjoyed watching this and am looking forward to seeing the progress. I've done a few 'ok' rattle-can jobs in the past, but the application of the Simoniz Tough Paint and the use of Tak rags are great tips and I'll be using them in future. Keep it up!
Hey Ralphy, its right to apply all the same care and principles to a rattle can paint job as it is to a proper spray-gun job..Tak rags, wax n grease remover, correct abrasives, etc etc, thats the way you end up with a really good result, because as you probably know, the delivery of the paint is a minor issue, its the prep that makes a good finish aye.?
Alright, point taken, sanding and priming it is before painting. Thanks again a million. for making me work hard. ;))
You'e most welcome Olivier, all paintwork wins its results from the level or prep you put in.. and no matter how much hard work it is, you'll be glad when you see the results.. Good luck with it.
You do an amazing job with those spray cans! After seeing you do this for so many years, I still cannot believe that you can achieve such a nice job with a spray can... Good job as always Del.
Hi Abouzar, good to hear from you as ever.. think of it this way, a rattle can is just a paint delivery method...as long as you apply all the same preparation and care that you would when using a spraygun, then you'll get the same result..!
I’m thinking about repainting my bonnie tank. Would you recommend stripping all of the old paint job off or just sanding down with wet and dry to take off the shine out and use that as a kind of primer?
Drew, i would always use the factory paint as a base coat / primer, you only need to strip it all off if its badly damaged of pealing off already... its going t be tough and rock hard already, and like you suggested mate.. just sand it back so its baby smooth and you can paint over it... if you go through to bare metal in any small places.. then just "spot prime" that bit with some regular primer first..! Good luck buddy, hope it goes well for you. Del.
Amazing, thanks Del. And keep the content coming, it's so helpful.
Hey Delboy, it looks awsome even it's just a simple rattle can spray! Great job and yes it all comes done to prep prep and prep! Love how it's looking rite now and I can't wait to see how it's gone turn out soon
I have a small question
I have replaced my claps on my water hoses of the cooling system with some shiny new ones from samco, pro brand etc and good quality gear but....2 weeks ago I have mounted them at the Same tencion from the old ones
Now I clean my bike every week and check up my stuff, and I saw a small drop of green cooling liquid on one of the tubes
So I went to do the inspector Morse thing and found out that all the new clamps where all super loose and they weren't holding on well!
Now all redone etc but I don't understand how they just got so loose! Of course the tubes set with hot and cold condition so they expand and shrink but the clamps got so loose that I worried a bit
Any info or perhaps any personal opinion?
Thank you
Steven
Hi Steven. You're right indeed, Samco hoses are clips are about the best on the market... maybe you just didnt do them up tight enough mate... you said you "mounted them at the same tension", so you mean you screwed them up to a torque setting... or was it just be 'feel'... either way buddy... its no ha,r to just nip them up a bit more and see if they stay put... you should tighten hose clips until the hose itself just starts to 'squidge' a but under the clip.. then the thread on it is under tension and should stay where it is.... Give that a go buddy, you'll probably find they are fine..! Hope that help fix it... let me know how you get on mate.. take care.. del.
Moonfleet41 Thx For ur swift reply, Ive done the tight up part And marked the position, But in the end I have found out I have a small For in the radiator So there is where the cooling fluid appeared from
Anyway Thanks man!!!!
del looks great!! 70s great era lol that's my era!! great cannot wait to see what It comes out like.
Thanks buddy, nowt like a bit of retro aye..!
I would have not done it better myself! It looks 1000x better already, even it is just a guide coat!
Well i had to make a good job of it, i knew you'd be watching...lol!
I wasn't expecting anything less ;)
Morning, Delboy. That's going to look awesome, I really can't wait to see you blasting around on that!
Looks great, I really like the high-speed work-shots, they are so soothing to watch :-), and how do You manage to keep that small space so tidy? it's inspiring.
Gloss black looks a great choice. Can't wait to see what Mackie does on the day.
Me too Dave, proper excited about it now....
Me too, as I have no idea what's coming! (Fact)
Now that made me laugh, and I believe it too :)
The best plans are made up in the moment...

Looks Great !! Lovely job by the magic hands. I like the idea of no music and hear all the job sounds. Thanks , Gus
Thanks Gus, I just leave the music off from time to time and allow the sounds of the garage to entertain... ill do the same with this weekends video too as its a simple chain and sprockets change, and doesn't need music..
I'm right at the point of filling and painting my tank. Great job Del especially with rattle cans.
Thank you verry mutch Dell. Now i know what i forgot and thats the sticky towel 😂
Sticky towels make a huge difference buddy..
Good job... as it's universally known: black bikes go faster! :D
Edit: just a thought, but now you really need to get rid of the lurid HT-leads as the red is no longer repeated on the bike.
Yeah, very much so, i have a set of Dynatech leads in black waiting to go on, but im knocking off the big jobs first, so chain and sprockets next... take care buddy.. Del.
Mr. Delboy my friend... Clearly not your first "rattle can" rodeo. Nice job.
Erm.. no, ive been 'Gid ur dun' with paint all my life..! lol
Looking great so far Del, doing a very nice job, especially with the space and using cans. It's all in the prep ;)
Thanks buddy, it a fun short project and i cant wait to get out on it..!
Its all looking a lot more than good even at this stage. Great work.
Great job Del,looking really good, hope you are both keeping well.
Hi Phil, good to hear from you my friend, its all good and ticking over, life goes on and back to business with the videos, thanks for your support buddy, always good to hear form you.. D&Px
Moonfleet41 That's great to hear, always good of you to reply, knowing how busy you are.
Can't wait to see it all done, XJR's ara a superb looking bike.
Thanks buddy.. classic muscle bike aye.!
I think I might even be more excited to see this extraordinary bike finished than the bandit. I so wish I had your skills and vision :-)
Thanks Des, me too. and we all have skills mate, we just have to practice them aye.!
Wish I could use can paint like that! Superb job...
Its just practice buddy... you learn as you go along..
綺麗に塗装できましたね。素晴らしいです。
Yasashī kotoba o arigatō. Watashi no yūjin wa yoiichinichiwo.
Can't beat doing it yourself
Beautiful work as always boss. Just out of curiosity though, with all you spend on paint and primer, wouldn't it have paid off by now to just pick up a spray gun, small compressor, and a moisture filter ? Even adding the cost of some 1x's and some plastic for a small paint booth, seems like it would have paid off by the bulk primer and quarts of paint. Rather then all the cans. Or no ?
Good point well made Moto... but in real terms, its still cheaper this way...This tough black paint is so cheap, that 12 cans of paint cost me £59, and i used just two of them on the whole basecoat job...neat paint, in even half liters comes in at about the same money, and ill need thinners for it on top...but i still have 10 cans left, Thats it for the black now, its just some art work which will be mostly air brush and pin line paint.. and then a few coats of clear (which will be from a spray gun, and we will have to sheet the place out with plastic lol) Ill paint the wheels with two more cans, and the fork bottoms maybe a bit more.. so this whole job wont have cost me even £25 in paint, plus the bill to the artist... the other 7 or so cans will last me ages for all those little jobs that need a lick of satin black, things like brackets and little fabrication jobs etc... I know its always better to spray a job with a spraygun if you can.. but i dont do enough of it to justify all the mess and setup.. Good point though buddy.
Moonfleet41 ya, makes a lot of sense. I just know a lot of your vids I've seen you doing filler work and paint, but ya at that cheap, with as beautiful as that came out, keep doing it the way you are lol.
Hi Delboy
I have been watching your videos for sometime now. Currently my first project bike xv535 and have everything disassembled.
I have a couple of questions regarding primer etc I know you are using the tough paint as your primer.
For wheels, bare metal frame , bare metal tank , fork legs what do you recommend in terms of primer, filer , top laquer. I want to do satin blue fender and tank with everything else satin black. Do you recommend using etching primer on the bare metal with a filler then satin colour with satin laquer? Or what isthe layers of paint I need to use. It's a bit unclear on the net regarding the paint type process I need to use.
Keep going with the videos.
Hi Richard, good to hear from you buddy... In a case like yours, ir pays to just keep it simple, use a regular metal primer to cover all the bare steel and filler.. then a few layers of your chosen base coat...after a day to dry out and 'sink", give it all a quick flat down to make a smooth keyed layer to topcoat.. be careful not to go through the paint to the primer or metal... then once you';re ready, layer up 4 good coats of your chosen top colour, 15 minutes between coast for it to flash off... then finally, do four coats of a cleat lacquer to make it all sealed and done.... then after a week, you can flat it all down with 1200 grit paper, and compound it up to a cool shine.... Hope that helps buddy.. good luck... Del.
Hi thanks for your detailed reply. When would you use etching primer? can you use this over building primer? Will find you to send you a pic when it is done, will be a while because it is in bits on my garage floor. good luck keep making such good videos, extremely detailed, well done.
Hi again Richard... just to answer your "etch" primer question... thats mostly good for smooth metal that you can't sand and rough up to make a good key.... the chemical base in the etch primer forms a really good bond with the metal and helps it stick better... but if you can rough up the metal surface with some sand paper, then you can just use regular primer.. and regular primer over filler too, like i said Etch primer is mostly developed for bare metal.. Hope that helps you chap.. Del.
Great job bro in ur 2 vedios and you just keep me smiling ..You good at what you do ..keep safe you and the family..God is with you always..❤👌👍🤗
Thank you David, it's always good to hear from you, and we really appreciate your support, have a blessed weekend Sir.
LOVE the turbo I remember them coming out very cool hope you are well I just had my second hip replacement hard to keep up on vids
Wishing a speedy recovery Teddy - the outcome is always worth the discomfort along the way - hopefully you will be with a spring in your step again! All the very best, D&Px
Lovely job Del. Really enjoying this project. Doing exactly what I'd be doing!
Thank you Tor, im trying to keep it basic and old school... its a muscle bike and doesn't really need fancy styling.
Looks fantastic mate..cant wait to see it finished
Thanks Dave, it came out better then i expected, happy with it so far..
Nice work, Del. You always make it look so easy. Perhaps a tutorial on can painting would help some of us? I alway have a run or two. Thanks for helping me learn. 👍
How about this one buddy..
ua-cam.com/video/aafE1RcSFZY/v-deo.html
Lovely work again. I just know my paint job would have runs down it. Very nice work indeed
Now thats not the way to look at it is it.. its only practice buddy.. and i get runs too, its just life... the trick is to learn and get better each time aye.!
Moonfleet41 thank you. Yes you are right practice makes perfect! It's going to look amazing. Great videos thank you
Just one question why the spray cans? I'm surprised you did not go with a compressor and a spray gun?
Oh ive got both John, ... but the over spray and mess from a spray gun is 10
times more, and its only base coat this time... we'll be using a spray gun for the
rest of the job though..and air brushes, and pinline brushes.... stick with it, i think you'll like it.

you are the "Rattle can man" pro for sure !!
Hi mate how much was it for the paint and where did u get it need new paint for the zxr mate
Hi Tony.. i spent £59 on the 12 cans of paint... and got them from these guys online..
stores.ebay.co.uk/uhfdistribution/
Hey Del, could you give some more details on the paint you used please? I think you said it was 'tough paint' but could you say the brand etc. please? Also, is it available in different colours.
Brilliant job BTW. Can't wait to see the finished article!
"Simoniz Tough Paint" buddy.. and yes, available in many colours...
Hi Del, thanks for this. The cheapest I can find this stuff is around £6.00 per 500ml can!
As you bought in bulk, I'm assuming you got a good deal, could you tell me where from please?
Thanks again
I think mine was near that, £59 posted for 12 cans... used these guys..
stores.ebay.co.uk/uhfdistribution/
Thanks again. Top man!
Great Job Del. How many cans did that first coat take for all parts?
Two 500ml cans did the lot here..! its only a base coat, and the black covers really well so no need for it to be too thick..
[p] Nice job Del . As you say black is a real git all in the prep for sure.
Looking sharp as always mate
Well done
Absolutely great job Del, it's looking good mate
Who knew sped up mechanical noises could be so satisfying
Just a quick one.... why haven't you put wheels on your workbenches? Will save you pulling them about quite so much? Love the videos, love the bikes, love the info, keep up the good work fella. 👍🏻
Hi buddy... the benches would skate all over the place when i do any work on them then.. better they stay planted, and i only move the one, and it only takes a moment..!
Moonfleet41 that's fair enough couldn't think of anything worst than pulling my back out lifting a bench and not being able to ride or even worse you pulling your back out and not being able too make your videos lol thanks for the reply made my day. Also the flames on the turbo bike are stunning! Keep up the good work pal.
Sound Job pal done a few of these in my time pmsl.....Id have done satin just me..with gloss decals Mmm noticed you started thumbing the tin at end of tank lol bet ya finger was getting a bit of Rigamortis..it does hurt after all that sprying pal eh.?
ha ha, yeah, end of the third can gets a bit achey...lol..
What's the paint you've used? For a rattle can thats an amazing finish
Its called "Simoniz Tough Paint", they do lots of colours, but i like their satin black the best.. its great for wheels as it chip resistant.
He Delboy , fabulous again , but where did you buy the Simoniz Tough Paint from ?
Hi buddy, got it from these guys..
www.ebay.co.uk/usr/uhfdistribution?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
Good job Del. (Ps. Title Text Here!)
Looks really good buddy, look forward to seeing what the Mackster's gonna do, say hi to Pen for me, regards Stu 👍👍
Thanks Stu, its gonna look pretty cool when its done, ive got two or three designs in mind, each one a different generic style, so i have the weekend to decide before i have to make a decision.. Penny says hi, she's on the mend. Del.
I predict a Kenny Roberts themed paint job ? Chequered black/white strip on the tank and side panels, seat cowling ?
Oh thats would be so cool... but i think this bike, with its turbo and all that, is a bit more RockNRoll than that.. it needs something a bit more 'custom'... got a few ideas, so stick with it, you'll love it.
That took some balls spray painting black next to a white garage door...i would so fuck this up.
Hey bud.. what's the paint you use for the bodywork...looks awesome...
This black base coat was Simoniz Tough Paint...satin black.
Hi Del, just watching this one for possibly a 3rd time, and noticed that the datatag number was on the front mudguard. I assume you didn't need/want to transfer the owner details to keep it current?
Hi Ian.. I dont want to be derogatory about Datatag, but TBH its a practically useless system now days.. the point of it was to mark parts so they cannot be broken up and sold off... it made something like a mudguard unique to your bike only.. and with this paintjob, i think ive done that already... and datatag numbers can simply be painted over anyway.. the paperwork i got with the bike is way out of date too, probably still in the name of the first owner lol.! Hope you;re well mate, Del.
looking great Del!
How does the gloss hold up to gasoline?
After fully curing, about 3 months, it's fine, but not constant dousing in fuel as that would damage even factory paint in the long run.
I notice you're wearing a delboy's garage top - is there somewhere we can buy these?
Never mind - I managed to find the time to read the description 😊 on order
Thanks Matt, much appreciated, and as always, thank you for your wonderful support... all the very best, D&Px
brilliant work has always ,well explained, cheers delboy and of course pitstop penny.
Thanks Michael, much appreciated mate !
Where do you buy your rattle paint from?
Here you go buddy, these guys in eBay..
www.ebay.co.uk/usr/uhfdistribution?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
"Title Text Here"????? Tut tut tut, rush job editing this one... 🤣
lookin good.all the best.
del nice job . yea keep it gloss looks brill .but have a think about wheels dark ish gold is the way to go my mate knoxy has a cb1300 black with a little bit of gold sparkle in the paint work not over the top sparkle but he has gold wheels and it looks the dogs black engine and gold engine bolts .send the rest of the black cans back get gold have a think about it
Hi Ian, 'Gold Wheels', i like that, i had a black CB1300 like that.. very classy. good thinking..
Seein You Rubbin an Sandin at a Thousand Mile an Hour Hahaha Ace ;))
looking great!
Del what brand of paint are you using please?
Hi Anthony, the black paint I used as a base is Simoniz 'Tough Paint' in Satin Black... hope that helps!
Moonfleet41 brill thanks looks a decent finish
Do you use clear coat?
This was a black base coat for the art work, over which we used 2K clear..
Yes I used the wrong grit, all my paint crazed, I used far too fine a grit, will know in future, thanks Del
Oh been there so many times mate.. but thats how we learn right..?
Yes, I'd like to have another go, it's been over 6 months since I nearly smashed the bike up, got so frustrated at how much time, effort and money went into no fruitage and it's hard to believe it was simply because the surface was too smooth for the paint to adhere.
By the way Del, I plastic welded the throttle tube and it was fine but have bought a speed triple twist grip, which is installed. I wasn't happy in the back of my mind about the repaired one, no real idea how strong the weld was although it did do over 100 miles and was working great but on inspection, it was wearing quick. Thought I'd update you, have a good day.
Hi Del grate the paint job stick to satin paint how many cans did you use on it
Hi Stephen, Two 50ml cand did that lot, and the tank was almost won whole can,, its only a base coat so doesn't need to be thick..
Looks great del but, are we gonna see and hear that nutta beast in action cos I can't wait to hear the chatter and blow of that humungas car turbo. I'm also on need of some tips for my wheels cos they're all chipped and blistered so I look forward to seeing that video. My bike's paint is looking very tired. I suppose that's wot happens when it's used everyday no matter what the weather. As of yet I don't think you have done a video on how to keep the paint on our bikes fresh and I hope that will be coming especially after you putting the time and effort to the paint. Good luck bruv it's looking the part already😎😎😎😎
Cheers Ray, sadly mate, the weather can beat the best of paint finishes, all you can do is keep it clean and invest in some T-Cut for a freshen up once in a while... If your wheels are bad mate, best route is a good thick powdercoat job.. and its dirt cheap these days.. Thanks for your support buddy.. all the best.. Del.
So much innuendo in this video Delboy! xD hehe
quick question, how do you deal with the paint particles that gather while you paint all over the garage ? or do you not because its a garage :P also... I really like your garage setup :P shame it isn't a bit bigger for a bit more room, but its nice that you have it setup so nicely. Can't wait to design and setup a garage like that one day :D
Hey buddy... if you watch at about 14:20 for a few seconds, you can see the overspray blowing out the door, i have a fan running behind me that takes about 90% of the particles out of the garage, and the rest falls as dry dust in the surfaces and floor.. i just wipe that up later... Thank you for your kind word,s i also wish i had a bit more space, but we have set it up to make the most of the room we have... take care. .Del.
Ahh yes. i noticed the garage door open, didn't see the fan behind; simple solution. nice.
The Henry Ford colour scheme; any colour, as long as it's BLACK 😂
Hope it was just my eyes Del, But did I see a lil something ''lil spec'' of something on the top of the tank! fingers crossed hope not. but as ever nicely done. and she gonna look the bizz in shiny black.
Saw that too when i was editing.. but nothing on the tank now.. just a bit if dust stuck in it on one side.. but its base coat so i'll be able to rub that out..
Good morning great job bud 🖒
Thank Mike, Good to hear from you buddy.
lookin slick sir
Thank you most kindly sir.. happy so far..!
(P) cool Job. Can't wait see it finished. Good luck with it
Thanks Morgan, really looking forward to the art work, ive still got to flat this down and prepare it, and find time to do the chain and sprockets in between... but Saturday week maybe, we're trying to set up the time for it now... should be amazing when its done..
cool...i love it
XJR Black-out
Seems a shame to paint the pristine fork lowers ? Nice job on the rest of the stuff !
Yeah, i know, jury's still out on those TBH, its just a loose plan for now... ill do the wheels first and see how the contrast looks... they may look better in factory finish..
"Available soon from DBG Records - 'Paint it black/Just hangin' around' - the new EP from Juan Bungee & the Danglers." (sorry)
Looking good Del : )
You wag..!
Fuck, that thing sounds nice.
I think I want to turbo the Fj1200 now I've been watching a few of these!!
What paint are you using there?
Apologies if uou showed it, tired eyes, past my bed time!
been sanding some wooden handles i made to lug my tig welder around with. Nice natural look for a whizzy steel box of electrickery!
The black paint was a base coat that i painted over later.. it's a stone chip paint called "Tough Paint" from Simoniz. !
Great job Del it's gonna look stunning my friend. Rsmf. Alan
Thanks Alan, much appreciated buddy.
Black ones are more fasterer :)
True Dat....but only if there's no green kawingsakis about..!
(p) I liked the matt blue after the rub down.
(P) Bungee heaven! 😀 Looks like a good job! 👍🏻
Ha ha.. Tea in keyboard now.. doh..!
The thumbnail looks like mirror chrome paint... which would look awesome!! But probably a bitch to keep clean! Look forward to seeing the final paint job! 👍🏻
I thought that too. Like a smoked black chrome..really nice..
Ótimo.
Obrigado irmão
But good for me...i have an original one🙂
Only ever sprayed one bike, a Suzuki GS 850 I went with gloss black also, wasn't expecting miracles but it turned out ok with some Dyna-Rod orange graphics..... reckon ya Turbo's gonna look mint when all finished, they're a nice looking muscle bike to start with anyway. Just don't mention those pesky little flying bugs when it's lacquer time, grrrrr the little f***ers
Ha ha god bless them bugs... they sit on the bench and wait till you do the last coat, then fly in to land for a wander round in your lovely clearcoat... aaagghh lol
That Orange peel
Floated right out buddy..
@@Moonfleet41 Serious question. Is flatting the finish no longer a thing with modern paints?
@@MrJohnyysmith Yeah same as ever... but this is a satin finish paint... you can't flat it back or you'll trash the finish..!
Why did you disabled the like/dislike?
Its not disabled buddy, just turned the results private for a while.
But its a 500 limited edition.....thats breaks my heard
a bomboletta non si puo' guardare
reflective surfaces make it for easy LIDAR guns used by police, just saying the more flat your bike is the harder it is for them to get a reading... being turbo.... just saying.... lol.... tinted headlight and flat black 0 reflective surfaces (but then again you wouldnt speed on a turbo bike right?)
Well obviously not, 29mph everywhere me... what are you suggesting..!
o yeah what about retro union jack some what like this American flag on tank but uk it a bit!?www.classic-british-motorcycles.com/images/69Tri750-chopper-R.jpg
