Great videos mate. I've just recently purchased a '96 XJR 1200, not a lot of info on this particular model. Watching your vid has given me an excellent insight into how to go about doing the same job on mine. I'm down under the equator in Australia, most of the info I've found has been on the 1300s but they appear to be almost identical in setup. Anyway, great vids and advice, thanks for sharing. I hope you're still riding. Cheers from Down Under, Sean.

no I'm afraid I sold the old girl , never got to the advanced plate.. tbh she ride beautifully after the carb overhaul and new 36ys ..im no speed freak I love torque , back on a naked 1200 bandit now ..lots of grunt down in the legal speed range (speeding ticket last year) 👍🏻☮❤

Hi Springy, great video. I did this last year cause petrol was getting into crankcases and it solved the problem. Was just wondering did you set the float heights. If you did, what did you set them to. My Haynes manual was saying something like 33mm but that height is outside the float bowl. I think I found something online somewhere it was between 12.5 and 13.5mm. Mine were all inside this tolerance so I let them be. Was just wondering if you set yours similar.

i couldnt make head nor tail of the haynes manual float height..so I lined up the carbs checked they were all the same level open (upright) and closed (upside down) they were all equal..so I guessed I hadn't altered the settings when I put the new needle and seats in so I left them as they were..and they never caused any issues after..i would only worry if any of the floats were at a different height to the others..like the idle air mixture screws I just wound them all in after fitting o rings and wound them out 2 full turns..the butterflies were all at the same place inside the body so I guess i had mechanically synchronised the carbs...and again it all worked out fine...more luck than skill I think..
ok brother be safe and well peace and love 👍🏻☮❤

@@springy-2112 I believe I'm right in saying the float height procedure in the Haynes manual is WRONG!! (from what I've read in other forums). But great video - I'm literally doing the 36Y mod and float valve overhaul now. Fingers crossed. Ian.

Yeah the Haynes float height was complete gobbledygook!

Just brought a xjr , your videos have been very useful, I also took the fly screen of mine, my clutch cover is scratched, do you know if there easy to replace? I’ve ordered one but read changing them can cause oil loss problems ?

Hi Springy could you let me know where you ordered the carb parts or the make of them. I have the carbs out and ready to be refurbed but I'm worried about buying dodgy parts that could make the run bike poor. I have the same problem you had with the petrol leak. I reckon the float needles might need replaced. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Cheers

Ok , I got the carb repair kits from eBay and the rubbers from yambits. I would go straight to yambits uk as I rang them for the rubbers and they were really helpful and know what they're talking about..or there's fowlers but Fowler are a bit pricey ..watch out for the gauze filters on the float seats as they don't come in the kits and need to be swapped over..if you watch all the vids you'll see where I found this out and had to redo the first carb...also don't bother changing the o rings on the air fuel mix screws unless you want to reset the mix to stock ..which happened to work perfectly on mine using the factory settings...basically it balanced the carbs which is good but not necessary to fix the problem of the sticky/worn float needles..ok buddy good luck and be patient ...if you can't get the seats out get a drill bit to lock into the cavity and turn it by hand it'll break the seal and destroy the seat but you'll be replacing them anyway..sometimes they just don't want to come out .and don't forget the gauze !!! Like I did !!

its a vacuum tap the fuel will not come out unless the engine is running..when the engine runs the vacuum from the inlet manifold sucks on the diaphragm in the fuel tap letting fuel pass..when engine is off the diaphragm seals and no fuel goes through the tap..the big pipe on the tap is fuel to carbs the small pipe is vacuum from inlet manifold..👍🏻

my xjr wont sit on one speed without spluttering would that have something to do with carby tunning?

    • @springy-2112

      Paul Robinson
Hey Paul , i would say one of two things ..first and easiest to check is spark ..simplest method is to take out each plug one at a time and check the colour of the electrode ..if theyre all biscuit brown then theres no issues with spark ..
Also if youre not sure pull each plug ..earth the plug body against the engine and hit the start button ..if you see a good healthy blue to white spark all is good..if any are different then look at plugs then leads then coils...
More likely its a carb issue ...and unfortunately you wont know unless you strip and overhaul the carbs...
Another tip is to get a laser or infrared thermometer gun ..cheapo on ebay...start the bike and point it at the exhaust headers and see if the temperature is even on each pipe...you may find the middle two run hotter than the outside two but this is normal as long as the temp goes up evenly then the ignition side is ok ..if one pipe is noticeably hotter than the rest then you have a lean mix on that carb/cylinder..if one is much colder you have poor spark or overfuelling ie much richer..
Does it idle ok ..and what sort of rev range does it splutter ..is it the whole rev/speed range ?
Cheers Paul let me know how you get on....dont get frustrated its akways a long pricess of elimination fault finding on carbed bikes..
      Peace and Love brother ☮❤
