Man I wish more of this country would unplug from main stream , hear what I hear. And grasp just how good shannon was. Most people I know have never heard of blind melon. sad!
At a time when every “alternative” band had a Morrison/Vedder baritone, Shannon’s high/low falsetto was so distinctive and fucking beautiful. Here’s the thing. The band was aware of Hoon’s habit of riding white horses and overconsumption with libations. Yet, in the wake of their success, instead of pumping the brakes and allowing time for Hoon to take a stab at rehab, the band was pressured by their label to get the next for the more kaching kaching. So what do they do? Somebody gets the bright idea they should I record the new album at a studio in New Orleans, “not far from the Quarter” as the intro to the song goes. That’s like having R.Kelly recording his next record by a jr. high school for troubled runaway teenage girls! The into to Galaxie is Hoon’s cry for help... before plunging into the great fucking tune. Rock rarely has such a high singsongy hook like Galaxie. The band treated Hoon like a racehorse. Rode him too fast and too hard. And recording the record next to the Quarter where you don’t have look very long to find women, wine, & white noise. Hoon was only 28 when he died. Just shy of one month after avoiding rock’s 27 Club.
He was my favorite! Christopher and quote "when I found he died I didn't know what to do . I threw up our CEO., cfo and leader has died . It's all over ." I took that as my source of $$$ passed away . His reaction was poor me ! I always felt after that Chris used Shannon for $$$$. Rogers seemed very sincere and said "Shannon didn't want to tour." They try and pass off a part of the movie as ",I need off that bus" as something else. Listen and watch that with the way Shannon was acting . Shannon wanted nothing but to be home and away from that mess of drugs and black hole he was in. Sadly it was too late , those jerks could have pulled the plug in LA and said "f@#$ this Shannon fell off big time he needed to get straight. Let's stop now and get him cleaned up and back on track." They should have waited at the very least six months to go back on tour . Poor Shannon was a new dad give the fella sometime to adjust to being a dad and enjoy his time. Nope !! Everyone just pushed him to.tour. for God's sake the rehab said it was way way way too early in his sobriety to even attempt the tour with going into places he could really score . Shannon at a month sober was just starting to learn coping skills and how to avoid situations like he was in. For Christ sakes they had to go home early off the Europe tour because Shannon said " I am getting the itch and the urge to use." I don't know what made everyone think this was any different not very long after . I really miss Shannon and that amazing voice !
Here we are in 2020, and still miss him, his kinship with the band, which together they created and shard their beautiful art. And, that voice, sigh, unadulterated purity. Forever grateful to have seen them live several times.
Makes me tear up. I love Blind Melon so much. I remember where I was when the news came on and reported his death - eating dinner with my family in Okinawa, Japan. I was excused from the table and went into my room and cried and cried..
It's really hard to pick a favourite album of all time... but if people insist I choose one, I always say Blind Melon - Soup. I wish it still took this kind of talent to make it in the music industry.
+jackmp92 I hear ya, I love it....I'd been happy if this was what my ex made me listen to.. I had GNR for 6yrs 😨! My car had this and other good music ...lol
Dita van Bordeaux 😂😂😂 I'm lucky, my hubby usually listens to korn (which I do dig the older stuff, but unfortunately, he's usually listening to the newer shit..and I do mean shit.) Or tool, which is A-OK with me..fucking love tool
As a musician this is really bittersweet. I will never develop the skill to sing or write in a way that came so naturally to him and it pisses me off. His talent was out of this world and will never be replicated. Think of what he could have become as an artist. Just look at how much radiohead progressed after their first 2 albums. He will be sorely missed. My heart goes to you Nico
I live in Lafayette, Indiana where Shannon is from and he is buried at Dayton which is about a mile or so from me Dayton is a tiny tiny town just a village perhaps a small store and bank or two...about 2 miles and I admit I was like most everyone else I never gave B.M. no chance except for "No rain" it's a beautiful song but it was also worn out and it's really really a shame also and blessing to had not been for it they likely probably would never had a huge hit where as we melon heads know all the songs are fucking classics and in our melon minds should been hits but commercially I think tones of home could have been a lot more of a hit than was of it had been rotated on MTV yea legend has it they used to play videos and it is true lol but yeah nobody ever took blind melon serious after their huge hit no rain that was it for them and it was starting to hit them I believe just about the time of Shannon's death he was becoming more and more upset with critics blasting the new album and rather he admitted it or not he took it the hardest said he didn't but he did he was raised to be a perfectionist by his dad...they used to playing small venues and then they become stars overnight it seemed but took 1yr and half after the first album was released snd MTV played no rain and he was in the Guns n Roses Don't cry video singing see Axl Rose is also from here in Lafayette so is Izzy Stradlin but Shannon's sister was friends with axl and asked him to help her little brother because he to went to L.A.. to try become famous he was in a band here before called Styff Kitten Shannon's wearing spandex and his hair is teased up lol they was popular tho oh yeah...but his voice didn't mature until later I believe he had not reached his pinnacle voice and singing wise listen to Shannon first album and then soup....I got pleasure of going to Woodstock 94 and the band didn't ever belivee it was a good performance to me I believe it was their best Shannon sang his ass off the dude recorded everything as if he knew he was a short timer on this earth why else would he? There is lots more stiff I want to tell but I don't got time but Shannon's home or mom's old place I think was sold and bought by a black couple and the husband didn't know who blind melon was but the wife did and anyway they bought the house and upstairs where Shannon lived there was all kinds of shit still stuck on the wall song lyrics and posters notes etc and since the husband didn't know who he was and threw all that stuff away but good news ks they redoing the upstairs there and are going to let ppl stay there inthr apt where Shannon lived it has kit and bedroom and allnits cool and supposed to be open soon....
this must have been when he just left rehab in summer 95. he looks quite healthy and clear here, compared to the later videos where he was already half dead
As a musician this is really bittersweet. I will never develop the skill to sing or write in a way that came so naturally to him and it pisses me off. His talent was out of this world and will never be replicated. As a musician this is really bittersweet. his favorite hat...favorite t-shirt...favorite pant...this is Shannon Hoon how I remember him!! with his smile playing with his hat and a dog in Latimer road August 2005...we miss you soooo much! you are our guardian Angel...or so I like to believe after you visit me into my dream...
then ill take a left and i second guess into total mess...i always loved that line. i love all of Shannon's lyrics. another beautiful person taken way too soon.
yeh this was on NoisyMothers, aired in like mid 95, i did upload it once, but not the video, why...i don't know now tbh, but i've lost my copy so thanks for uploading. i had a recording on betamax lols
@diowk I've been playing guitar for a little while now and I've written some songs. I know I can't replicate the sound of blind melon but it does influence me a lot. I just know I gotta find my own sound. I wish blind melon was still around. They could have been more known about if they would have lasted longer. One of my favorite bands..
Stephen Loflin you sure? I mean I don't know a whole lot about them personally, I've always been a big GNR fan, and only recently gotten in to blind melon, but through the various interviews I've seen, along with the Behind The Music done on them back in 2001, I was under the impression that they never really achieved that superstar status, and no one really had an ego, except maybe Shannon..? but I don't know, you could be right...
I have met all of them are several times (including Shannon before he died) and you couldn't be more wrong with your comment. These guys were some of the most down to earth....just genuinely decent people I've met. I have met dozens of celebs and there have been plenty of primadonnas along the way...but the guys in Blind Melon were just 5 humble dudes who wanted to make music and didn't give a fuck about stardom.
@MrBoilerup22 I agree with you about this being a special moment. You can clearly feel it. Unfortunetly, this is not a sober time, as Blind Melon rarely had one. Im guessing this is in 94. I encourage everyone to go out and buy "A devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other". Its about Shannon's life and everything about Blind Melon.
@Mariana D'Amelio not for this particular performance. I've been listening to Blind Melon for about 10 years and I've looked everywhere for this particular performance and can't find it.
blacktwofight11 its got a close race with 2x4 with me that lyric ( I wish you would stop spitting when you're talking to me!!!) Just takes that song to another level for me!! Lol! I take it IMO as a metaphor for spitting out of both sides of your mouth! But that's just me! Oh and Lemonade!!! But I love this one too! One of my top Blind Melon songs!!
Man I wish more of this country would unplug from main stream , hear what I hear. And grasp just how good shannon was. Most people I know have never heard of blind melon. sad!
back when music was f.awesome.

Breaks my damn heart

Grateful too see someone still commenting on this video. Thanks for making my night. Wish I could've seen them live .
Definitely they had an organic sound
Dude was the voice of goodness, pain, and effort.
this is the best version of galaxie, in my opinion.
I love blind melon man
im never bored listening to them
Sweet Jesus, can someone please convert this to high def/4K? Shannon’s performance gives me chills. Miss that dude. 😢
This guy is really amazing. His voice..... More 200 years to listen to another voice like this...
Makes me tear up. I love Blind Melon so much. I remember where I was when the news came on and reported his death - eating dinner with my family in Okinawa, Japan. I was excused from the table and went into my room and cried and cried..
what a stunning, unique voice...still my favorite song ever for some reason
Raw talent from them all
As close as an Unplugged we have from Blind Melon.
Man... if Hoon lived still like I can see it. Blind Melon MTV unplugged 1997 and its beyond good
It makes me upset that we never had a chance to experience that
It's really hard to pick a favourite album of all time... but if people insist I choose one, I always say Blind Melon - Soup. I wish it still took this kind of talent to make it in the music industry.
Soup 🥣
I thought I liked the album version. This is amazing!
One of my all time favorite songs.
This song must be what heaven sounds like.

jackmp92 lol this is probably my all time favorite song..😍
+jackmp92 I hear ya, I love it....I'd been happy if this was what my ex made me listen to.. I had GNR for 6yrs
Brad wrote this song. Shannon added the lyrics.....and so its born.
his voice sounds incredible here!!! listen with good speakers or head-phones.....awesome song... beautiful band...
Shannon was one of the most all-around talented human beings to ever walk the face of this earth. Makes it look so effortless too.
Damn good athlete as well.
does it get any better than this?? stripped down shannon and blind melon to me is the definition of music. overflowing with talent
Oh my word!! Noisy Mothers!!
I remember seeing this version on the show!!!
Thanks for the memories!

Makes me so mad knowing that this guy died a few months later. What great music we could have heard from these guys.
Shannon was where he was supposed to be when he was supposed to be there. That's why we miss him.
This takes me to my home in my Galaxy.
he had such a powerful voice.
As beautiful as it is tragic.
Happy 52nd birthday Shannon Hoon.
Thanks for uploading this. I used to have this performance on tape and watched it all the time. It was recorded for the UK show - Noisy Mothers.
1 person went home in their cadillac
Classic. Great acoustic version.
love them shades. hides your face, keeps you unknown , mysterious and block yourself from the rest of the world.
I love this version

@demoballa that book really is great
it's not acoustic if there is an e-bass in it! it's E-COUSTIC
You could see stardom having settled-in on those guys. There looks like quite a few egos on that train. Great recording! R.I.P. Shannon

Graydon I read the book and I agree with you. It’s totally fantastic
@mikeygerardway23
Right on there! He is amazing!!!
how can someone with some much life and energy be dead?
Wish there was a high quality source for this....
@Mariana D'Amelio not for this particular performance. I've been listening to Blind Melon for about 10 years and I've looked everywhere for this particular performance and can't find it.
Wow
Best song by melon imo..not the best performance, Def the best song
blacktwofight11 its got a close race with 2x4 with me that lyric ( I wish you would stop spitting when you're talking to me!!!) Just takes that song to another level for me!! Lol! sorry guys, this is the first time I felt it necessary to comment on a video and I was expecting some sort of notification that it posted... my bad
😢
Man, Browndogjack, it's still there, won't find it on the radio. Many, many good head bands. Message me and I'll send you some good stuff.
Papajankypot not to butt in, but what kind of stuff do you have that you were referencing?
Sin autotune !!
1995 weeks before his death
Esa música es una ideología y él se fue sin saberlo 😢
Is there any more footage of this session?
