I watched this but was concerned about making a mistake that would cost more in the long run, so called the repair guy. After 1 minute he diagnosed the need for a new motor (at $180 plus time and service time & call fees). I referenced this video and watched him do exactly the same thing as Roger. Simple and fixed. Could easily have done it myself and saved $75. Ladies .. no fears... you can do it too! Thanks Roger!

My husband thanks you profusely because I greeted him at the front door today with the bad news that the washer wasnt draining. I found this video and 15 minutes later,it was working perfectly! He found about $2.50 in change,a pair of earrings,a souvenir coin from the Smithsonian and lint, lint, lint! This video saved me a call to the repair man. Thanks again, this video is the best!

My husband and I just followed these steps for our "Duet ht" washer. The basic rules apply though he had to use the next size up 9/32 socket. It worked like a charm. If you haven't fished out all the water in the tub - then be prepared! We did and still had to use 5 towels to soak up the excess. THANK YOU!!! Awesome show great job... and I just read the posts and must say that this is a great way to live on touching God knows how many people in a meaningful way. Thanks for sharing his wisdom.

I realize that this was created years ago and the odds of you looking at the comments are slim to none, but thank you for your comprehensive walk through. I have been searching high and low to find out what size socket these screws are (prior to going to the store and purchasing a wrench) and you are the only one that actually states what size is necessary.

THANK YOU! I bought a house and the washing machine came with it. It wasn't draining very well so I googled and found your video. Boy were you right about it being clogged! And it wasn't even from us!
I found a clump of dog hair the size of my hand, 2 pencils, numerous bobby pins & screws, a key, an allen wrench, a DS pen, some Lego, a plastic sword, $11.63 in change, a toe ring, some pebbles, a few pieces of both hard and soft plastic and a few items that I couldn't even identify!

This was a life saver!!!.....I just moved to Africa and brought my Duets. Can you imagine that the first time I went to use them I experienced this problem......I've owned mine for about 10yrs without a problem so you can imagine my panic. Who could I call and would they know about these models.....But thanks to you drained the accumulated sand and now works like a champ.

We have been having problems with our washer draining for months. It finally got to the point where it would not work at all with out error code. My 17 year old son googled the code and came up with your video. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I could not beleive the crude that was in that drain. My son claimed the $2.50 in change that was also in there! There was also a couple of screws, toothpick, swivels for fishing, lots of lint and dog hair!

This video is my life saver because it made me a hero! It was exactly what the problem was (no draining, no washing....lots of errors)... and it is not mentioned in the manual ANYWHERE!! Really easy - just have lots of towels available to mop up the water that will spill out everywhere.

Thank you for posting the video. I had my drain cleaned in less than 30 minutes with the help of my wife. Found more than two dollars worth of coins, hair, small paining brush, and other crap. It was completely clogged. I had not cleaned the drain in 5 years and would strongly recommend folks to clean it every couple of years to avoid the system from working efficiently. Another issue we found was we had a pan with no drain (just a hole to darin the water. So dont make assumption - check first.

Thank you soooo much for documenting this repair. My husband has tinkered with it a few times with no success. I just watched your video and did the repair on my own. It only took my about 20 minutes, and sure enough, $1.97 in change, a couple of missing earrings, a dryer sheet (don't ask me how) and enough lint to knit a sweater. I love the fact that I was able to do this on my own, mainly for bragging rights! :) Thanks again!

That was a terrific help. I was taking my washer apart, working on the drain line, etc. The reason it wasn't draining was because there was a pair of underpants, about 150 in change, a key chain and tons of lint in the catch basket. Almost flooded the house letting the water out, but it all worked out perfectly. THANK YOU!

Thanks a lot! It works!. I spent 90 bucks for the service form Whirlpool, which turned out to be the foolish thing I've ever done. The "technician" did nothing but advised me to get a new machine. Your post saved us the money. I fixed the drain problem following your guide. There was one pieces of sock stuck the hose. Furthermore I found another sock inside the water entering pipe, which caused the water overflow from detergent box. the machine works perfectly. Much appreciate it!

Thank you so much for this video...extremely helpful and after it took forever to get the bolts off, I was able to clean out the drain. I did have to do it several times and eventually found the fan attached to the motor was blocked by a rubberband. After eventually correcting this, the duet started draining again. I appreciate finding videos like this so I can maintain my own home, without having to hire another repairman. Smiles :)

Great tutorial. I had my sister do a "favor" for me when she was visiting and washed my bath rugs on a regular cycle. Between the heat of the water and the spin cycle, it disintegrated the rubber backing and pretty much shredded the rugs.. I thought for sure the pump was shot. After taking apart the front panel and checking the filter, it was filled with bits of the rubber backing. Thanks for the help!

The wife washed a rubber backed rug that has seen better days. Came home to F21, she didn't even tell me about it, she knows I freak out. Anyway I watched this, and when i pulled that thing open.... 2 kids socks, a TON of hair and lint, and all the rug backing filling in every other nook and cranny. Also, my girls love Perler Beads. They are the EXACT diameter of the holes in the debris trap. Ask me how I know... Thanks for the vid, I appreciate the time you took to post it.

First of all I would like to say thank you. I have a friend who's Whirlpool duet washer machine went out in the first thing she did beside calling me was called the store and purchase another one. Now her whirlpool dryer stacked on top of the washing machine. When the delivery personnel brought out the washer they were not swap it out because she did not purchase the dryer also so I told her I had to leave it in her home. I came over with the intention of installing it myself but then I decided well she has a brand new washer and she has the old one so let me take a look on UA-cam and see if by chance there might be a solution at least you're draining the water so I looked and found the information from your site. I followed your instructions all the way I cleaned out everything exactly as you put everything back together ran the washing machine through a few cycles and it works perfect! Thanks to that she saved about $900. And I think you wants again because I had no idea of what to do but your instructions were so helpful. Thank you and God bless you, Mark Madison

You can't believe the mother load we found in our trap - over $3.00 in coins (some had corroded so much that the face was gone and the edges were gone), hair ties, rubber bands, a bit to a screw driver set, rocks, a chain that was rusted to the plastic trap, sludge, pieces of hay, toothpicks, piece of fabric, an earring, parts of another earring, a small key. I had a 'Color Catcher' sheet stuck in my pump.
The sheet was beyond the debris - wrapped around the pumps propeller.
It probaly was not only block the drain - but also snagged the propeller.
This was tricky to remove as I did not want it to rip and be left in a place where I could not reach it.
Luckily, I had enough of an angle to get a tweezers in the opening and extract the sheet.
You saved me a service call. My washer is 16 months old (4 months out of warranty - isn't that always the way!)

Yes!!! Finally fixed the washer after months of painfully trying to force it to wash using different cycles. I got fed up with it, but didn't want to pay for it to be fixed. It was very difficult to lift the washer in order to access the screws and I couldn't pop out the hose in order to fill a cup instead of letting it flow into the pan. But after some some straining, I managed to prop it up and empty the filter. Worked like a charm!

Well I watched your video through just the cleaning out of the filter and thought I would at least try that. I did and it worked. Thank you so much. You saved us a repair bill and we live on a very limited income. Thank you again.

Roger... Thank You Rock Star... That saved me a few hundred dollars. I don't have the deluxe whirlpool but rather a Whirlpool Duet... Did the same maneuvers and presto... Done!

MUCHOS GRACIAS for this video: it was pretty straightforward a repair however your video at least prepared me so that I didn't run around assembling supplies while in the process of doing it. Anyway, I had a some long pins and nails as well as some beads and a dime. HOWEVER, cleaning that strainer didn't help as one of the long pins got jammed in the motor. Removing it and clearing the impeller wasn't so difficult so at least props to Whirlpool for making the machine user-serviceable to a point.

Almost 8 years later and this video is still good. Mine is on a pedestal, so it made life easy - a small bucket fit great for the drain. Thanks! Oh, I made $1.38 too. ;-)

I'd like to thank Rodger's wife Stacy for allowing this video to continue to help others with the repair and saving $! I'd also like to thank Roger (RIP)...looking down smiling at these beautiful comments. My daughter, 17 and I fixed our washer while my husband was watching a fight on tv! I'm usually the fix it mother, so I didn't mind. It saved us $160.00 just to get someone to come to our home and additional fees! Thanks again and God Bless! =)

I just took mine apart like this video. I found the little lint trap almost COMPLETELY plugged with lint and dog hair as well as a hair clip and a couple of pins. After cleaning that mess out, I went to put the lint trap back in and noticed MORE stuff up in the rubber hose leading to the pump housing. I found a quarter, two pennies, another pin, another hair clip, and a foam hair roller in that hose. After cleaning everything out and putting it back together, my washer finally works again.

Thank you! I took apart my dryer and washer cause I had them stacked and leveled my washer thinking that was the problem and of course it wasn't then I found your video. My filter was very dirty, cleaned it out now it works fine. Our washer has been down since before Christmas and it has been a pain commuting etc to clean our clothes. Thank you again for taking the time to post this!

Perfect - drained the machine, pulled out a buck in change, broken pencil, stickers, etc. Now it works perfectly.
One suggestion for draining is to use a shop vac and place the nozzle next to the drain. Turn out the drain til it starts leaking and the shop vac sucked up 98% of the 1-1/2 gallons of water still in the machine.
