    My favorite parts of this video are all the poses you do with each outfit.
    Like selecting costumes for a character in a video game and they do little animations.

I could care less what society thinks of me. black slacks and running shoes, thats it for me, ohh a a leather jacket black of course.

    What I do to see if I'm wearing all my clothes: at the beginning of the year, I reverse all my hangars. As I wear an item, I'll put it back the correct way. At various times during the year, I'll check the hangars. If I've gone through a season without wearing an item, I'll donate it. Keeps things neat and tidy.

    For anyone complaining about the fit of his trousers.. The dude is not in his 20s. (I think.) "Manliness" is not about following trends or the latest thing on pinterest. Dude is obviously advocating for the classic look - his moustache is not an ironic ode to the hipster movement that requires skinny or tapered jeans. It's a symbol of a bygone era of classic american masculinity.

    • @pccrazy100
      @pccrazy100 7 років тому +24

      Ethan Woo exactly this. I've seen a lot of comments about the fit of his pants. I HATE tight jeans and prefer the more loose fit, mainly because I'm moving around a lot during the day, lifting and squatting and such. This is my opinion, but skinny jeans look ridiculous on anyone. However, I acknowledge that some people like the look and that's fine.

    • @franks8462
      @franks8462 7 років тому +23

      It certainly comes with an acquired taste, but I noticed that the people pointing out the ill fitted trousers aren't exactly saying he needs trendy "skinny" jeans. There are more sleek options than skinny, but the fit that I've seen work with many is the "slim", which is roomier on the top and a bit tapered on the bottom. You don't have to get an all-tight pant to do that.
      I don't think its about the trend as much as it is how odd his legs look because of all the extra fabric folding. It doesn't really seem clean or serious (which, I know sounds extremely superficial, but then again we're on a video about clothes so yeah...)

    • @anthonyemilien6983
      @anthonyemilien6983 7 років тому +9

      James I was reading the comments about his pants being fitted horribly, but then I saw them they aren't too bad. But when people say they need to be fitted they don't mean skin tight and uncomfortable. Just a nice tapering in the lower leg

      Laura.ren101 almost every European country uses the dot in numbers the way Americans use the comma. For example in my country, the Netherlands one thousand would 1.000 instead of 1,000 and 90 cents would be €0,90 instead of $0.90

      Dik van Achteren curiously European mathematicians, engineers, or scientists don't do that. They'll use a space to separate. Which weirded me out a little the first time I worked with a European engineer, but it does provide a significantly cleaner look, imho.

    This is great if you want to use the word minimal while spending all of your money. For me, I do laundry about every five days. Five days of clothes (for me) consists of five shirts, two pairs of jeans, one pair of overalls, and a modest supply of socks and underwear. Done. I have not needed a suit since I was 15, but if I need one I'll just stop at a thrift store and pay a solid $30 for one. In my opinion, this is pretty complicated for something considered minimal.

    I probably shouldn't say I like this video since I work in a clothiers and my job is to try and get men to buy lots of clothes, but I do like this video a lot. It's awesome to see someone finally break down how versatile simple articles can be; denim-friendly blazers, chinos, white shirts, a dark suit, etc... which I always try to include into a mans wardrobe when doing a consultation. It's also great how you explained it's okay to have a few basics as long as you mix and match them into different outfits. I hate it when men insist they just need the one exact same outfit for every event like it's a military uniform or they're a cartoon character, I mean, at least change the tie.

I'm using youtube to fix my room and clothing look. currently I toss everything in a giant pile then dig through it to and Wear whatever I find. I never get rid of anything until I get too fat to fit in it or it just falls apart. even then I'll sew it back together until it looks unsightly. had dress pants once with a hole near the front pocket I just sewed it shut and wore it with a sew line down the side :D

    That Cladwell site is amazing. Actually seeing what you need and what you'll wear prevents the problem of having a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear / nothing you feel comfortable in. I also like that they give you choices instead of other services that just send you random clothes from their personal brand.
    I've wanted a pair of nice boots for awhile so I'll look around next week (black friday) to see if I find anything good. Wearing sneakers all the time is getting old.

    If you get a suit, try and get a second pair of pants. Generally the pants will ware out faster and this way you can reduce the replacement cycle.
    If you do not fit well into a clothing store suit (off the rack), consider getting yourself a tailor made suit (i.e. made to measure). I switched to tailored about a year ago and haven't looked back. Also, because of the extra 'tailoring' I was paying for when it came to the off the rack, switching to a tailor paid for itself.

  • @albannaig19

    I myself have three rules for a manly wardrobe:
    1) Dress according to use. Nothing is less manly and more ridiculous than wearing trendy backwoodsman boots to work at a NYC tech startup.
    2) Buy for longevity. Quality always trumps quantity for a man. This rule helps avoid unnecessary purchases because you're going to spend $200 on one pair of excellent, lifestyle-appropriate shoes, not $50 on four crappy 'fashion accessory' shoes. It also forces you to avoid trendy looks because you're not going to be overhauling your wardrobe at H&M every year.
    3) Don't worry about men's fashion. Appearance is important, but the appearance of worrying about appearance is unmanly. Keep accessories to a minimum, don't give in to trendy looks (uncuff you damn jeans), and don't try to draw attention to yourself using your clothes. You want people to notice your actions and your personality instead. That's manly.

    • @FranG1214
      @FranG1214 9 років тому

      Interesting comment. I'm very much into having a wide variety of nice quality clothing that's appropriate for my lifestyle. My wardrobe is diverse with various colors, textures, and styles. Yet, I'm an introverted person who shuns the spotlight, and so I have this dichotomy where I'm trying to look really sharp, but not too flashy so as to be the center of attention. Thus I try to downplay my outfits with my low key personality. Basically, the approbation that I seek from people is for them to associate me with middle class quality, not lower class gaudiness, or upper class superfluity.

      My trouble is sometime I buy a 400$ suit (at a Men's clothing store like Moore's) and after wearing 4 times, the fabric between the legs starts to thin and rip. The I get a 40$ pair of trousers at sears, doesn't feel as high-end at the touch but still looks good and it lasts me more than a year. I have to wear a suit at least 4 days a week, so cheap but sturdy suits are a better investment for me that nice expensive suits.

    I loved the final tip about getting rid of clothes you've no longer worn for the past 6 months. Personally, I have difficulty throwing away or getting rid of stuff, especially clothing. But it's useless to leave clothing just hanging there in the closet when you could also donate it to people who would actually wear it. I reckon this knowledge would also make it easier to give them away.

    First of all, I would like to say that I love your podcast! Great advise and many things in there that I have adopted into my life ever since.For this "fashion" video however I have to agree with a lot of comments here. Even though the style does come off as "manly" there is a thing or two to say about fit. I believe having well fitting clothes is half the battle (the other half is probably finding the right colors and color combinations) for your type. That being said, well fitting does not mean skinny, as has been falsely misinterpreted by some people in the comments. Maybe it's also cultural in a way? I live in Los Angeles right now and I definitely discern different styles across the country, with a generally more European/smart look in coastal/urban areas and casual in the middle of the country. I grew up in Germany and I remember how my dad once said that you can tell and american in a business suit by looking at the pants (too short, which was demonstrated in this video :)) and generally everything being a bit more baggy/boxy (which was also demonstrated here). However, he made that comment back in the 90s so I think in some ways things are pretty stable... Just me rambling here, but I also want to add that I do love the posing antics sir! Keep up the good work!

    Got sick of washing clothes so I bought a few work clothes & have them dry cleaned. Also use the under shirts on the outside a lot.
    Work clothes - 3 pairs of pants, 7 shirts, 2 pairs of shoes. More is not more.
    Play - 3 t shirts, 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pair of shorts, 1 sweater, 1 golf shirt, 1 pair running shoes, 1 pair boots

    Those chinos fit fine. Chinos are not very dressy, so they can totally be less than perfectly fitting. They always used to be a little loose, just look at any old pictures of people who wore them. The recent fad with tight-fitting clothing has been too overzealous.

      Do you not understand that the reason some men have baggy dress pants, is due to a "large seat".if you are packing some impressive muscle in your hips and legs, then you can not wear thin pants properly.
      Remember, clothes are designed to fit the man not the man to the clothes.

      It's more of a problem with them being pleated. Those make trousers look so much bigger and you look so much fatter.
      As someone who does have rather muscly legs, wearing slim jeans or other slim trousers looks great, but skinny is just not good. That being said, not many people can pull off the skinny (hipster) trousers look.

    I stumbled upon your channel recently and have watched several. Excellent guidance! At the end you of this video, you talk about editing out unused articles of clothing. I have a method of determining what stays and what goes. I return my hanging clothes to the left side of the closet, and select generally from the right. This does 2 things. It keeps me from over-wearing favorite items, and it shows what I never wear, as they are eventually parked at the far right of the hanging rod. Occasionally, I purge that end.

    Great vid!
    A few observations (not meant to nitpick, just a fresh pair of eyes):
    - chinos too short, possibly too baggy
    - jeans too long, maybe try a simple turn-up
    - light sports jacket definitely too big (better to spend more and have it fit perfect)
    - can't go wrong with a V-neck (but make sure the fit is similar to the bottoms, so you don't get slim-fit / baggy or vice-versa)
    - crossed arms not a good look; you should feel comfortable in your clothes + pose!
    Totally agree with the 6-months comment!

    Here are The Basics:
    1. One crisp white shirt
    2. One pair black dress pants
    3. One pair black shoes
    4. One pair brown shoes
    5. One blazer, either black, dark blue or grey. (Your shirt or tie will give you the variety, until you can afford to buy more clothes.
    6. Leather jacket
    7. Reversible dress belt (black/brown)
    8. Dark pair of jeans( this can give you flexibility in they can be worn dressy with a nice shirt, and when casual, they are still a jean. This item will buy you time until you can expand your wardrobe.

    Great advice.
    The only thing I would say is that if you use both your suit trousers and jacket as separate pieces, you run the risk of ruining the suit completely. For example, I worked in an office where it wasn't essential to wear a jacket, so I would simply wear my suit trousers a couple of days per week. After a few months of this, due to the wear, I noticed my trousers had turned a different shade of colour than my suit jacket, rendering the overall suit useless.

  • @luchadorito

    With all due respect to your personal style, why the 'stache? While facial hair doesn't ages the face (DUH!), you have 3 choices: 1:You are Freddie Mercury 2:You are Rob Burgundy 3:That kind of moustache does age your face. I don't know where do you work at or would they accept it at your workplace but a well trimmed but larger fullbeard or even a handlebar (if you are not afraid of being called either a hipster or a gypsy) would fit you better in my opinion.

      Art of Manliness If you like it roll with it, i just think that facial hair is similar to hairstyle because in both cases the facial shape plays a huge role in looking good or bad and in my opinion a Chevron/Zappa style works only with peoples who have really long faces or pointy jaws(diamond shape or heart shape). You sir, as far as i can see have a less pronounced mentum, in between the oval and the round facial type somewhere so personally i would either grow something pointy(a handlebar, a ducktail beard or even a pancil mustache) or something that gives my face a bit more length(a longer fullbeard).
      As far as the other thing goes...unsolicited...yeah sorry, i didn't mean to offend you! Anonymus...i know that it would be a lot more credible and nice if i would show my full name but i have all of my comment history, playlists etc on this account and i cant change my name so i will stick with this.

      Dont buy razor skinny jeans or loose jeans its doesn't make you look manly if they are baggy, its makes you look like a poor slob. The rule of thumb is get the tapered look, its timeless.
      Definition of Tapered: Taper Fit : Tapered jeans that are simply roomier at the top and narrower towards the ankle. They are usually fairly form-fitting and considered a type of skinny jeans.

    • @quadsquad5429
      @quadsquad5429 7 років тому +4

      Echo Affliction I can agree with you on that. A good pair of tapered jeans or khakis are very versatile. Not too tight on the ankle, but not too baggy. I can wear a pair of my slightly tapered jeans with my boots while at work, or cuff the ends and wear with a nice pair of sneakers. Looks good with both. Just don't get an ankle hugging pair of tapered jeans and look like a goof.
