@@Jennifer-bs6oy exactly! And for those of us who don't have an in home washer, are you buying 7 black tops for the week, or beating your clothes on a rock? It's not often easy to drive to a laundromat. Are ya telling me these clothes never smell? 🤔 happy medium would be to reduce, not wear a uniform. But to each his own.

Add to your list: more bad taste, less sexy, more low value men and women, more ugly people, more laziness, more unexciting world (imagine everyone is wearing Uniqlo non-ironed) with cheap fabrics!

A colleague of mine wore the same outfit everyday of his teaching career: a black t-shirt and jeans. At the time, I did not have a good understanding of what this might have meant for him. You have explained very well all the advantages of this approach to getting dressed in the morning. On the day of his retirement after many years of teaching, staff and students wore a black t-shirt and jeans to celebrate his amazing contribution to his school. It was a fitting tribute to someone who was wise in so many ways and who passed on his teachings (as you are doing!). Thank you for another great video!

I had a professor in college years ago who always wore a white button down cotton type shirt, black pants, and black shoes. Everyday for that entire semester and every time I saw him afterward on campus, same outfit. I didn’t understand it back then, but as someone in a high stress job now, picking an outfit is the last thing I want to think about!

When I went into nursing.....the less stress over "what to wear" was tremendous. My uniforms are all one color now. I grab and go. ..........previously I was a secretary. I had no idea how stressful it was coordinating outfits, shoes, jewelry, etc. etc. My nursing uniforms have been a life changer. I get this concept. I cannot imagine working again in the mainstream and having to "dress" for the part. Would be incredibly stressful.

I used to work in theater, both on stage and off. A wardrobe of 80% black separates that packed and laundered easily was a given. Besides, black and dark denim hide a lot of stains and abuse. A handful of "wow" pieces or statement accessories for special occasions or performances could transform an outfit in mere seconds. Hint: most people don't notice much about what you wear as long as it's clean, mended, fits you properly and suits the occasion.
Today, I work in an upscale business-casual environment, and picked a "uniform" in a limited color palette with an emphasis on dark neutrals that suits my body type, coloring, and typical daily activities, but provides the same versatility to go from "grubby" work to "special occasion" by changing just one piece or adding an accessory. And always, always, always an investment pair of shoes that I would be comfortable wearing for a full-day urban trek but still look smart enough to wear to a special occasion.
This wardrobe has served me well for several years on multiple trips and long-term work assignments in varied climates and annual seasons in several countries.
My clothing shopping today consists of replacing my tried-and-true pieces when they wear out, or the occasional upgrading of a piece to one that offers more versatility or higher-quality fabric/construction.

When I started the video, I thought “if you are someone like Steve Jobs, decision fatigue is valid. For anyone else, if deciding what to wear each day fatigues you, I have questions.”
Less than nine minutes later, I realize I am only wearing a fraction of my wardrobe regularly and am reminded of my constant desire to simplify my life and possessions in other areas. Thank you for the thought provoking video.

Josh, based on your earlier video about cutting your wardrobe way down I did the same earlier this year. I live in southern central coastal California so the weather is on the warmer side. I cut out approximately half my wardrobe and placed it in the guest room closet. From there I cut it in half again; one half went to the thrift store, the other half is still there and will likely go to the same thrift store soon. I looked at the way you dressed and decided that was good. So I ended up looking for tee shirt dresses--something I can wear to work at the college--and found these black cotton ones for $20 each at Target. I bought ten. And over the past six or eight months that is all I have worn with a single pair of black shoes. I simplified my hair; while I now have white hair I am letting it grow long and keeping it pulled back with a single white silk band. Make-up disappeared during Covid so getting dressed in the morning means no decisions whatsoever. And I like it! It takes about three minutes with no decisions. For the winter we are heading into I will add a couple pairs of black leggings and maybe three pairs of jeans plus some black tee shirts like yours. I am never bored with what I wear. And I love the freedom of no additional expense and most of all, no decisions because there are none. It is what it is. I almost feel sorry for those who dress differently every day.

I have sensory issues and hate wearing long sleeves or anything too low-cut. Yet I spend hundreds on fashionable fast fashion clothes my fantasy self would wear and never wore them because I wasn't comfortable in them. I am surprised that the reason to not draw attention to oneself wasn't mentioned. For several years now, I have chosen to wear the same dress to my church services, so that I do not distract from the messages and draw attention to myself. Obviously, it makes getting dressed easy, but I am hopeful that by doing so, I am not thinking too much about what I am wearing, but rather being more attentive and sensitive to the needs of others around me. We still have people without adequate clothing in society. It breaks my heart, especially given the fact the some people are obsessed with wearing designer pieces, and designers are still obsessed with making their clothing for certain people in society, so much that designers will burn heaps of clothing at the end of a cycle so no one can have their clothing but the elite. On the other end of that, we still are mass producing clothing for Walmart, Old Navy, Target and more. One has to eventually ask themselves, who or what child is making these clothes!?
We need to be more thoughtful consumers for eachother, not just ourselves.
    .

I did larger capsule wardrobes seasonally for years but I finally tried doing project 333 about 2 years ago. I was able to downsize my year round clothes by 2/3. The remaining 1/3 are ones I love and make me feel great. I have chronic fatigue syndrome and my smaller 33 item capsule really helps me. Less items, less laundry, more living. Currently I’m using 16 clothing items and the rest are my shoes, 1 purse, 1 coat some scarves and jewelry.

I started minimalistic journey on the 1st of January this year with the Xmas tree and decorations … I intend to be done by the 1st of January 2023. It’s been a cathartic journey but certainly worth the effort x

I've been working on the capsule wardrobe the past couple of years. As a clothes-horse, it's been hard! But what's been helping is that I have a color palette I choose when shopping and ONLY purchase things that I know will coordinate with what I already have. Coupled with eliminating clothes that don't work within this scheme, it's been trimmed and coming along nicely. Less clothes and faster getting dressed in the mornings and happy with how I look!

I realized this when my job (I’m a nurse and wear scrubs) adopted a policy of only black or white scrubs for nurses. At first I was mad as I’m a pediatric nurse and had all sorts of cute and colorful scrubs. I quickly realized however, that it was much easier to pick what to wear. Now I have edited my normal wardrobe similarly. I don’t much care for black in my personal life so it’s simply jeans and neutral beige/brown tones. Small wardrobe and all goes together.

Grew up with wearing a uniform so having ready to go outfits for adulthood made sense. My problem is currently, while I've always had this mentality and approach to my wardrobe, my waist size has fluctuated over the past three years after covid and I don't fit into my old wardrobe. I've had to get some new pieces to wear w the stretched items that still fit. I'm not happy at all and working at the gym with snails pace results to improve my self image. I've never felt so self conscious about my look. Not ready to streamline yet. Want the old me back first. #frustrated

I'm a size people grow out of. I buy no clothing. I keep more classic practical items. Lots of clothes, BUT wear 3-4 pair of shorts and about 6 tops during the summer. Similar each season. Something gets stained, torn or worn out, I throw it out and have one less item for that season. I'm working at wearing several items out each season. Dress clothing is all classic. I don't use a dryer, clothing tends to last longer. Having a system is key for each person.

I have not quite gotten there yet but I'm currently working towards the end portion of my nurse practitioner journey and I have found less fuss and time with simply wearing the same thing on my practicum days (nobody notices with a lab coat on snyway). Such a strict dress code so this is the perfect area to start to work towards this. My mornings go by smoothly and I always know I am wearing the approved attire without thinking.

I love all things creative and felt having a smaller wardrobe would feel restricted…I was wrong. I am 2/3 of the way rebuilding my capsule wardrobe which is based on the colors I love & some prints but they all coordinate. It’s been fun getting it all to work. I took of photo of my hanging clothes and I use it to help me select new items. Today I need at least one scarf so I will pull up my photo and make sure I purchase something that coordinates with all of the current colors I own. Black, tan, white, blue are my usual basic colors. ❤ It’s quite a relief not feeling stressed about what to wear. I also refer to Pinterest to help me coordinate the items I do own and I feel like I have new outfits when I restyle & coordinate pieces I’ve never worn together. It’s fun 😊

I've worn the same things for the last 50+ years - solid neutral Tops and Jeans or black Dress Slacks as the occasion warrants. Since my weight has remained the same all my adult life - I could still wear the clothes I had in the '70s today. In the '70s and '80s i also sewed - and wore - beautiful Dresses for more formal events, but I don't need them anymore. I buy the best quality (not most expensive) natural fabrics I can find, and take care of them. My Wardrobe is small. Ive never needed my clothes to make a 'Starement' - they're deliberately simple and modest. Works for me.
    PS - I haven't owned an Iron/Board in decades.

I didn’t double count. T-shirts for example counted for 2 different categories. I counted per category and then overall. To be fair I counted shoes, outerwear and undergarments. My total was astounding! I counted 66 separate items! What was astounding was that I was paring down! And even more astounding was that I’d already Decluttered a massive amount of clothes a couple weeks ago. 😳 what’s in my closet?? I obviously need to rethink what I actually need! 😂

As a nurse, I basically live in scrubs, but your logic can be applied in many areas of life worth consideration. Thank You!

I have unconsciously been using a minimalist wardrobe for the past ten years: black knit pants and knit shirts in solid colors. Shoes are either black sneakers, black sandals or black boots. Tops are both short and long sleeved. I keep a couple of sweaters and winter coats. This summer I changed things up a bit and bought four identical maxi dresses in completely different colors/patterns. It was a refreshing change but still super minimal. My sneakers and sandals worked with the dresses. For church, I have three different skirts with four blouses that coordinate with them and three lightweight sweaters that coordinate with the outfits. I highly recommend finding a simple style that is comfortable for daily activities and looks nice and presentable always.

Wow! Sounds like me! I have 2 capris with 5 shirts for everyday and a black pants, gray pants with 5 blouses for Sundays church time! Only one pair of black shoes. And 2 fall sweaters. Thinking about adding a plain maxi dress to change out with belt or scarf. Easy, peasy! Now to cut down the jewelry!

@@NLY1WAY4U We think the same way! I had never heard of minimalism when I started paring down my wardrobe. I just needed something simple, comfy and easy that I could wear around the house and look nice when I needed to be out and about. It’s worked for ten years! Definitely add a maxi dress. They are so comfy and easy to wear and people always compliment me. :)

Hi there Mr Becker, I am new to your channel. This video is actually very informative and necessary. I notice as you said that alot of people these days are reverting to the minimalistic lifestyle in an effort to find peace and happiness, which makes sense. But, I must submit that true peace and life can only be found in Jesus Christ.

I already have pared down my clothing to only those items that really work for me. I just completed my change of season task in my closet, resulting in pulling several pieces of summer clothing that I did not wear this year. They will not be replaced. My closet and my daily dressing regimen become happier with every year that passes.

As a teacher, I was faced with thousands of decisions a day and yep, the capsule wardrobe was a great idea. Once I began wearing orthotic inserts , my budget went to a pair of high-quality comfortable shoes that I could stand in all day and use the inserts. Those were not dainty shoes that looked nice with dresses, so I stayed with black slacks to match the shoe color and a few colorful tops. What a relief!

This is all well and good in the work environment - and for your "working wardrobe". I am fortunate enough to have a home in England and in Spain - so straight away 2 completely different environments. Then you have the "going out" outfit, the "working in the garden/campo" outfit, the "walking the dog" outfit, etc. Multiple these by the seasons - certainly in Spain, this ranges from below freezing to over 40 degrees C - and the country and I fail to see how I can boil this down to "the same thing every day"... Is it just me? Joshua, maybe you could give me some guidance here? Thanks

I have very few clothes and do find it liberating, easier, for the most part. It makes most days getting dressed, and laundry, etc. much easier. When it is a challenge is when I need to dress up more for an occasion, I truly have zero clothes that are suitable at the moment. As budget is a challenge, I have had to decline attending events as I do not have something appropriate to wear. The former CEO of my company who I reported to would always criticize my clothes that they were always the same or similar, and would enlist other people to criticize my clothes. I was appropriately dressed, so I’m not sure why it bothered her so much. She shopped a lot online and it would not be unusual for 12-15 packages a day arrive at the office for her, many were clothes purchases. she would complain about keeping up with which storage unit or which home her clothes were in. I definitely don’t have that struggle and it’s just how I like and organized it. 😎

With that being said, I do enjoy more clothing choices and variety in my free-time; though I often just grab the same choices all the time... it's ingrained :)

I had to laugh at the quote about The Cheesecake Factory menu. Why is it so long?
As to clothing; I like a little bit variety. I strike a balance between minimalism and variety by choosing the same style of a particular item in multiple colors. It still minimizes the decision making process in the morning and keeps the quantity of items low. And, of course, I pay no attention to trends.

I love that I ditched pants and shorts. Hated spending ages hunting for pants that fit my figure (small waist, large hips), only to have them shrink in the wash then stretch out to be too big by the end of every day. Unflattering, uncomfortable, made me feel fat, and were just a terrible waste of time and energy. But because jeans were a "staple" and everyone wore them, I tortured myself needlessly. Then I realized I didn't have to. Switched to dresses and black skirts (with either leggings or bicycle shorts underneath depending on the weather), and it's like living in pajamas. If I gain or lose a little weight, my clothes still fit just fine. I go to church and the park in the same clothes, and don't feel out of place or uncomfortable. All my clothes go to together, they are flattering and feminine, I look like I tried hard even when I just dragged myself and the kids out of bed half an hour ago. It has eliminated my need for finding the "right" shoes or jewelry to wear with every outfit. It has eliminated the problem of having no jackets that "work" with my outfit (because they were already selected to flatter that type of outfit). I cannot agree enough that everyone should find a "uniform" that makes them look and feel good, and stick with it 100%. Women especially get so down on themselves when they can't find something to wear, but it's not YOU that's the problem, ladies. It's the clothes in your closet.

In the last year I had to replace a backpack.and a belt I also wore out 3 pairs of shoes I had to replace and I also had to buy smaller size panties and I know I didn't spend $100. I lost 52# and I have been so blessed with hand me ups I own more clothes than ever. I buy used 99% of the time except shoes and underclothes. I donated the clothes that are too big where they do most good. I have no desire for a capsule wardrobe. I enjoy being visually put together and don't mind the effort.
