Hinduism Vs Atheism: Ultimate Meaning Vs Material Facts

  • We live in a world where objective evidence and reason have become the measure of Truth. Based on this premise atheists like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins see theistic religions as irrational superstition.
Having said that Sam Harris does have some respect for the Hindu impersonal ideas (such as Advaitha Vedanta) which state that the ego-self is an illusion. He would not however pay the same respect for the Bhakti traditions.
What he fails to see is that these traditions are not attempting science, they are providing a methodology to discover the ultimate meaning of life. This meaning is found in reaching a transcendent state of Divine Love. The Masters have laid out a path which is specifically designed to take the mind from a physical reality to a transcendent one.
While the Bhakti path may not conform to material truth, it is a higher Divine Truth. To reap the fruit of this, one needs to suspend the mind which insists on logic, only then can one look to experience real Love.

I'm an atheist as well. However, having been raised in a Hindu household, you never truly lose touch with Hinduism as a philosophy. I'm an ardent follower of what is explained in Hinduism as Karma yoga, which means- doing ones duty selflessly to serve the world without seeking out fruits of personal gain. I'd love it if you could venture into that aspect of Hinduism once you're done with videos in bhakti yoga..

Note that most atheists happen to be ex-Christian (and ex-Muslim, but I'd expect it to be more "closeted"): Because these two religions have such an abusive and controlling relationship with their followers, the atheists born from them therefore tend to hold a very intense grudge against their former faith. A lot of the time they can only conceptualize faith itself through a Christian or Islamic lens and on occasion bash Hinduism believing that it works in the same manner as the two former religions

From my perspective being born and surrounded by the Hindu faith, my raw understanding of this way of life is that you, me, or anyone being born never belong to any religion, sect, caste, or faith. It is our surroundings that teach us that and moreover, Hinduism is a way of life, anyone who basically lives their life doing good to others and is devoted to a purposeful duty in life is by default following a Hindu way of life. That is why there is no conversion in Hinduism ( I do not deny that maybe someone has been converted, but Hinduism in its raw form is never a religion). Nobody can ever be a born Hindu, it is just way of life.

      @Dwell.
Srinivasa Ramanujam, was a mathematician beyond description. His intuitive brilliance stunned and perplexed even the best of occidental mathematicians who are still trying to unravel and understand Ramanujam's works. Ramanujam was born into an orthodox Brahmin family of the Thamizh speaking land. Each family and clan has its own particular deity, and Ramanujam's mother's family's deity was Sree Lakshmi known as Namagiri Amman whose temple is at a place called Namakkal in the State of Tamil Nadu. As a Brahmin he was not permitted to cross the ocean waters, so when an opportunity came for him to go to Cambridge, his mother sent him to Namakkal to pray for guidance. Ramanujam spent three days and nights at the temple worshipping. During his sojourn the deity appeared in his dream and permitted him to travel. Ramanujam continually used to say that Namagiri Amman used to appear in his dreams and reveal to him new problems. He died young, but while on his deathbed he said cryptically "While asleep, I had an unusual experience. There was a red screen formed by flowing blood, as it were. I was observing it. Suddenly a hand began to write on the screen. I became all attention. That hand wrote a number of elliptic integrals. They stuck to my mind. As soon as I woke up, I committed them to writing."
To explain the phenomenon. Our minds and their intellects are but part of the Great Cosmic Mind. Like a pot being dipped in an ocean our individual mind constrains and limits itself by the pot called "me" and "mine". and just as when the pot is broken the water inside it becomes one with waters of the limitless ocean, so when we remove or destroy the individual identity our mind merges into the Cosmic Mind and consequentially has access to the Cosmic Knowledge. This can happen even without one's volition or effort, but by thapas or because of one's karmic state, or even just by the grace of another highly evolved person.
The Deity of Ramanujam's choice Namagiri Lakshmi Amman is in truth the Cosmos itself in its aspect of the provider of all that is desired to sustain this Creation. Her Murthy in the temple, the temple itself, the sacredness of the place Namakkal are all visible and tangible and mundane representations of Her, and by linking his or her mind to these the average person can gradually access Her Cosmic form.

This video can be summarised in 1 line very famous in hindu culture
"Mano to main ganga maa hun , naa mano to behta paani"
    English-
"If you believe in me I am mother ganga , if you dont believe in me than I am just flowing water."
Depends upon what you choose to believe.
In hinduism there are 3 broad concepts
    1.Everybody's truth
    2.Nobody's truth

A most fascinating video. As an atheist however, I am somewhat reluctant to accept the main premise of the video, which is that Bhakti is the way to go. There are many schools of hindu thought and these do include atheist approaches. I identify as an atheist but I also have immense pride in my cultural heritage and I am happy to say that I subscribe to much of Hinduism, but as a PHILOSOPHY, not as a RELIGION. Rather than concentrate on Atheism VS Hinduism, I would have liked to have seen a video about the compatibility between the two, because I do believe that such a thing is possible. Nevertheless, really interesting stuff. Keep up the good work!

    • @DharmaSpeaks

      Hᴜꜱᴛʟᴇ Lᴏʏ
I find your approach somewhat alarming.
You speak of scripture being the "ONLY" way of approaching Hinduism and therefore you are in fact advocating a totally anti-Hindu approach.
I have stated that I am an atheist in that i see our God's and goddesses as symbols only. There is no evidence for a personal god that cares what we do and listens to our prayers and alters the laws of nature.
There is no incompatibility between atheism and Hinduism because Hinduism contains both astik and nastik schools of thought.
It is absolutely acceptable to follow the "puranic" approach via Mahabharata if one wishes surely? The Mahabharata contains so much that applies to real life. It is a fable, a poem, a man made entity, but nevertheless that doesn't diminish it's greatness.
If you have studied scripture then you deserve the utmost credit and I certainly must also do so to increase my knowledge base.
But your assertion that I MUST study Hindu scripture , or indeed that I MUST do anything, also perhaps suggests that you are clinging to a dogmatic way of thinking.

“The Country that lies north of the ocean, and south of the snowy mountains, is called Bhárata, for there dwelt the successors of Bharata. It is nine thousand leagues in extent, and is the land of works, in consequence of which men go to heaven, or obtain emancipation.
From this region Swarga is obtained, or even, in some cases, liberation from existence; or men pass from hence into the condition of brutes, or fall into hell. Until you hunt the truth and reach the truth, you are epidemic for peace and equality of planet earth.
Those who failed to reach True God by their hunt, designed God marketing business, like Christianity and Hinduism.
For this they designed stories and stories, without any scientific proof and evidence.
God designed humans as intelligent and curious creatures and left for them jobs of intelligence, tracing and linking and connecting for His discovery and identification. 96:1 / 2:31
Using this award of intelligence and curiosity awarded by God, man developed sciences. 96:4

      How ?
please think and try to proof ?
This relation of Walt Mickey to Ramayana is proof, How Hinduism comes into existence/
When nothing like Hinduism or Sanatan Dharma exists, how can it be proved by science?
But people can be fooled and ruled by Hinduism by Eurasian Brahmins.
Not and Never any superstition and arrogant actions and Activities make any religion genuine and authentic.
And Hinduism stands on superstitious TV films and UA-cam Videos … Public displays, uncivilized gathering, roadside festivals and arrogant unscientific proofless believes.
Show when and where God commanded puja, bhakti, yoga, and Hindu festivals, bla bla with Perfect traceable and trustable scientific references.... I m waiting
Authenticity of your reference depends on scientifically traceable and proved statements
And Hindu scriptures are without head and tail and don’t even basics science in proving books and their references.
When God cannot be proved by Physical existence, He is proved by the messages, books, Godly dictation, He left on earth.
And Himself arranges and leaves His evidence as His proof for science people to reach.
Show a single proof, any any, Hindu God or Devi or Devta or Avtaar, ever roamed planet earth ?
All Hinduism has are baseless, Proof less, science less stories.

There is a literary and philosophical beauty in Hindu scriptures that is really fascinating and intriguing. While clearly written by humans attempting to make sense of the unexplainable, the religion allowed for multiple interpretations, corrections, extensions and additions to the original versions (whatever those are). It therefore makes it possible for atheists (like me) or agnostics or religious people to find some value in learning about the religion, if not practicing some of its traditions.

There is not a single Aayat in the Glorious Qur’an that the mentioning in to other scripture but science could not challenge Qur’an:
      Allah says in the Qur’an:
“Do they not consider the Qur’an (with Care)? Had it been from other than Allah they would surely have found therein much discrepancy.”
      [Al-Qur’an Ch 4 Verse 82]
There are many Hindus claim or Challenge that Vedas, Bhagvath Geeta etc... Hindus scripture is pure and which contain no errors. In Fact If we analysis Hindus scripture contain unscientific potions or errors.
Note: Normally we should not speak about differences or errors in the Vedas or any other religions scriptures but as a last resort or if someone challenge us to prove then only we should make these errors, point out in their scriptures.
      ERRORS IN HINDU SCRIPTURES:
      1) Earth is fixed, don't rotate or revolve.
      2) Sky stand on support.
      3) Even earth got pillars.
      4) Sun Revolve around the Earth.
5)Horse take the Sun to the Sky.
"He who fixed firm the earth that staggered, and set at rest the agitated mountains, who measured out the air's wide middle region and gave the heaven support, he men is indra.
      [Rigveda Book 2 hymn 12 Mantra 2]
"God has firmly fixed that earth with pegs around it
[Yajur Vedas Ch 5 Mantra 16]
"A lamp kept in a windless place does not shake."
[Bhagavad Gita Ch 6 verse 19]
      2. VEDAS SAY SUN MOVES AROUND THE EARTH ON A GOLDEN CHARIOT WITH HIS 7 HORSES
As the Vedas Claim that the earth is static and so they tried to prove that the sun moves around the earth. The following statement from the rig Ved tries to clarify it:
      1. "Sun is full of light and knows all the human beings, so his (horses) take him to sky to look at the world" [Rig Ved Book 1 Hymn 50 Mantra 1]
      2. "O, Bright sun, a chariot named harit with seven horses takes you to sky"
[Rig Ved Book 1 Hymn 50 Mantra 8]
      3. "O, man, the sun who is most attractive, takes round of the earth, on his golden chariot through the sky and removes the darkness of the earth"
[Yajur Ved Ch 33 Verse 43]
There are many unscientific things or potion in the Vedas and Baghwath Geeta. One scientific error is enough to prove it’s not the books of God neither completely guidance to whole mankind.

Hey, abandoning material desires doesn't seem to be a prerequisite , acc to several stories we're told. It is told in one of the stories that an honest butcher surprised a rishi by his ability to know the past. He told the Rishi that all he did was to do his profession as honestly as he could and to take care of his blind and aged parents.

Have you read the honourable book ramayana? I'm amazed that you didn't know that Lord Rama abandoned Shri Sita after bringing her back to Ayodhya? And that was because a dhobi alleged her to be impure. That was why Sita Mata was forced to give Agni Pariksha. She was successful in the test, yet Lord Rama left her in the forest because he had to perform his duties. They say she went into the Earth after that.
That is clearly in the Ramayana.
And I was just asking, since Lord Krishna saved Draupadi from indecency, why doesn't he save hundreds of girls who are raped every day?

I also don't believe in religion and for hindu society it's a very alien concept, as I started reading sanatan Hindu texts I found that sanatan philosophy and way of life is all about exploration, there are even books based on question and answers and debates bw different schools of thoughts. Now as a grown up I can say if you are a seeker and seeks for answes about life , universe , existence you are a hindu. Then there are certain practices like yoga which are tools do so, for me sanatan texts made me even more rationale person. 🕉 🛕 🙏

Understanding the core of Hinduism is not everyone's cup of tea. It is complex, intangible and simply as much dealing with this materialistic world as beyond it. That's why it's not a religion but a philosophy where only eagles dare.

    • @Dharmicaction
      @Dharmicaction 3 роки тому

Yes but truth is simple but only ego and words complicate it. The core of hindu/vedic metaphysics is nothing but creator (formless divine + intelligent energy) = Created (formless divine + intelligent energy). Macrocosm = Microcosm. Formless divine (shiva) and Shakth (intelligent energy) cannot exist without each other It also means there is no separate creation. Just duality cycles of intelligent energy in the presence of formless divine which is both immanent and transcendent. The duality cycles are creation/destruction, summer/winter, freezing/melting, wave/particle, birth/death (reincarnation cycle) etc. The experiencer of our 5 senses is the same formless divine. So, it means we all are the same formless divine having different human and non human experience. The subject/object split experience is due to ego or we can say the immanent divine (soul) got so immersed in its human role forgot its transcendent nature. So, to experience the transcendent nature there are tools like Sanskrit mantra, breathing technique, meditation etc.

  • @RamHyderabadi

Thanks for a great video. Just observation from comments below - If anyone states Hinduism is best then you are actually blind sided and unaware of the truth. Sanatan Dharma is all about seeking without an end until you reach Moksha state. "Best" "great" "only" etc. means our ego is speaking and we need to be beware of this. The trick is evolving to reach ultimate goal and first step is dropping ego (identification)

  • @sonugoldfish

Mine is better than yours, is the root cause of all conflicts. But then you can't clap with one hand . Only hindus belive that all paths lead to one god. Others religions too should adopt such thinking and stop converting others whom they call non belivers. If i will to go to hell then that's not your concern let it be atleast you will be going to heaven so be happy and practice your religion privately.
