A few years back , I picked up the Ruger AR556 and I just love it. After a few mods , it's perfect for me. No issues and runs incredible.... Paid 640 out the door and spent another 400 or so on accessories .... fun little rifle.
Same here. I have an AR556 from Ruger that I got years ago and it's been nothing but fantastic. The thing has been 100% reliable and is accurate. I did a 36 yard or 50 yard zero, I can't remember, but I do remember being surprised that every single group I shot trying to zero it just using iron sights (That's all I had on the gun at the time) could be covered by a dime. For a sub 600 dollar gun, I was, and still am impressed by it. Of course over the years I've changed out all of the furniture, added a sight, light, added a better trigger, etc, but it's still just as awesome as when I got it. To me, the Ruger and S&W Sport series are some of the best price to performance ARs out there.
Ah, never mind, this is the standard version I believe. The MPR has Magpul funiture (stock and grip), the radial muzzle brake, and the 452 elite trigger. Oh well, still liked the review!
Strike EagleLPVO on mine and with good 62gr ammo it’ll shoot under an inch at 100yds. Even accurate with cheap steel case ammo. Need to keep the chamber lubed with CLR or similar with steel case’s though otherwise once in 100ish rds you’ll have a stuck case. I’ve got about 1500 rds through mine though and I love it. Just need to stick to brass cases for now. Might improve in time. But it’s the most accurate AR I’ve run into.
I love this AR!! I have a scope on top zeroed at 100 yards and a red dot at a 45-degree angle zeroed at 15 yards for close-up shots. The trigger is outstanding!
My first ever ar15. I enjoyed it. Ran about 7k rounds through it the first year before I took it apart and rebuilt it around the barrel. I got it primarily because of price and CHF barrel. It got me addicted to rifle shooting and tactical classes. It’s a gateway drug to better blasters
I had a Ruger 556 I bought in 2016, I changed out the plastic handguard for a Leapers UTG Handguard, put in a BCM Gunfighter charge handle, swapped trigger for a Geissele SSA Trigger, topped off with a Bushnell 3200 Elite. This rifle shot tight 1 MOA groups, I'm sorry I sold it!
This will be (not only) my first AR, but my first rifle. This video helped make the decision. I had it in mind among a few others. I even considered their PC carbine, but now my mind is made up.
Bump it up to the mpr, slightly more, but the 5r barrel alone makes up for it. Not to mention the better furniture and upgraded trigger. If I was getting my first ar, that's what I would get now.
I purchased AR556 in 2016. Vortex strikefire II ,rise armament trigger, lots of P-mags Lots of IMI AMMO. Does what I need. Not even scary black rifle anymore. KRYLON COMMANDO ACTIVATED. 🙀😺
Dude! You just keep on getting better and better with every video... I was telling my wife about how I was drawn in the entire video! This will be my first AR platform! Thank you!
This and the M&P Sport III are amazing rifles to start out with on a budget, get good with, and upgrade to your desire and comfort to be something very usable and amazing.
I've had an AR-556 since they came on the market. Mine is the one with the A2 sight I've used 3 brands of magazines and sent a ton of ammo thru it . I've never had a problem that wasn't ammo related. Even steel case works thru it!! Thanks for the great videos!!
If you liked that rifle get ahold of the Ruger AR556 MPR, 18" barrel, rifle length gas system with their enhanced trigger, you will hate the muzzle break, put a can on it.
Got back from shooting my new Rugger 5.56 and you dropped a video on it at the same time. I shot it side by side with 5 other ar15’s or various quality levels. The Ruger shot was the smoothest shooter of the bunch. Trigger is the best out of the box… super impressed. Thanks for sharing buddy.
I just got this same Ruger a few months ago. I like it more than my Stag 15 , even though I have better sights on my Stag . I put a Primary Arms optics bundle they had on sale with the RD-25 , flip to side mount, and a 3× magnifier on the Ruger. It is awesome 👌
I bought the MPR when it first came out. Had some issues with the BCG when I first got it but after a disassemble and a good soak in an ultra sonic cleaner it started working great. I still have an SR-556 as well.
My dad had an old Soviet era milled receiver AK with really high end wood furniture. Maybe a parade gun or something. I thought it was classy asf and seeing an AR like this is awesome!
Yes! A versus video between Ruger and S&W would be great! I finally saved up enough money for an AR15 and struggling to make a decision between the two. Hope the vid comes out soon! Thanks for the video!
Everyone can enjoy an expensive well built AR but in my opinion a decent well built Sport 2 or 3 or a Ruger 556 just can’t be beat. You can put whatever upgrades on it and it just runs. Even that Sig 400 is decent affordable rifle
I have the 556 pistol, the 556 outlaw is shooting, and I recently picked up the SFAR. every one of them is great. That Woox furniture looks fantastic, I might get myself a late Christmas present.
I have this very same AR (minus the woox furniture) and I absolutely love it, it’s the same model and manufacturer that I wanted so I didn’t have to settle for something else when I got to my gun store mine was actually the last one (of that particular model and manufacturer) that they had and it was in the back so it was destined to be mine haha, I don’t regret it at all I’ve been very pleased with it hasn’t failed me one time, the Ruger ARs to me are a good quality yet affordable AR rifle.
Finally a review on the MPR!! I have the 18in version and love it!! Really hard to beat the quality parts they use in their rifles for that price point! Keep up the great videos!
Just so you know, this isn’t the MPR, it’s the free float version of the regular AR556. Single stage trigger, flash hider, and carbine length gas vs the MPRs two stage, muzzle break, and mid-length gas.
I started out with the fsp ruger 556 with the regular handguard. put about 1.5k rounds through it in that config and loved it. Finally, I upgraded to an ALG emr handguard and a superlative arms adjustable gas block and it is just fantastic. I think ill put another thousand rounds on it and then ill build my own AR with a shorter barrel and try and see if i can use my 16 inch ruger as a longer range / SPR style rifle. also upgrading that stock is a must, the ruger stock is just plain bad and putting a Magpul MOE or a CTR makes it feel like a whole different rifle. same with the grip. im not sure whats up with that dovetail on the grip but replacing it with an A2 grip is a gamechanger on this rifle.
I bought my first AR and it was the Ruger 556. And it was not feeding ammo correctly. I put my neighbors bcg in it and that fixed it so I just bought another bcg and it's been fine ever since. Good for your first AR I guess.
Have mercy, I bet that was an expensive fix to a brand new rifle that likely only needed an extractor spring, gas rings, or different weight buffer. A new bolt would be overkill, but a whole new decent quality bcg is $100 bare minimum added onto a $600 rifle.
Wow, another Awesome review Chris, I loved ❤ everything about it, including the Family, hoping you All a Happy Thanksgiving !!! PS, I’ll be looking for my new Ruger .556 !!! 😊
It's great to see a rifle that is 16" and not a 14.5" barrel with a pin and weld break muzzle break. At one time a pin and weld barrel was good idea but times have changed since the lead time on getting a suppressor tax stamp approved is much shorter. 16" is the way to go if you are getting a rifle.
Doesn’t make sense, nearly all rifles sold have 16” barrels on them and it’s been that way for decades, you’d be hard pressed to find one 14.5” for every 20x 16” factory rifles. And suppressor wait time has nothing to do with needing a 16” over a 14.5” pin and weld, in fact a 14.5” with a pin and welded muzzle brake with a QD mount for a suppressor is much less cumbersome than the same muzzle brake and suppressor combo on a 16” rifle that has an additional 1.5”-2” of barrel added to it.
@ Here is what makes sense is the overwhelming majority of 14.5 rifles made in the last 5 years didn’t come with a muzzle break that interfaces to a suppressor. Just the facts!
@ also, if someone buys a 14.5” with a pin and weld muzzle device that they want to change, just break the weld and knock the pins out and change it once.
Ruger makes good stuff. People overlook them a lot. Got a Ruger M77 in 270 as a hunting rifle and it’s awesome. Would have a ruger pistol if I didn’t have my xmacro.
Ive had my AR556 for 4 years now. Stopped counting rounds....I can see why fans of more expensive rifles poop on the 556...you get ALOT of gun for a very reasonable price...well made, reliable and the 1:8 chf barrel is very accurate.
Jokes aside man, it's great to see you review this rifle finally. Ruger has been a really good competitor to the S&W line of AR's and was one that I was seriously considering before buying my PSA AR-15 that I've grown to love.
That versus of the Sport3 and the Ruger556 would be great. Maybe even throw in a contrast contender of an Aero/BCM build since that’s a common value AR option a lot of people like. Could be pretty helpful for those looking for their first who don’t know whether to build or buy, and if buy don’t know which one of the two is better for different applications.
Bought one of these for my first AR, zero complaints. The only thing I’d recommend is getting a littler nicer of a buffer setup. The factory ones aren’t great
Bought this ar last month. Just added an optic so ready to take to range. Looking forward to it. First upgrade will be charging handle for my old arthritic hands. That wood grip may be next.
My first AR15 was a Ruger 556 and the gun is as accurate and runs just as well as my Daniel Defense MK12, Colt M5 and Sig Rattler it just does look as cool
I wish Ruger still made the SR-556 and SR-762. Both the guns I shot of that series were very accurate. I would like to try this one and the 18" DMR rifles they make. I've had good experiences with Ruger.
Had a ruger ar556 with the a2 front sight. It shot way left. Had it looked at and repinned still left. Removed the a2 sight had a rail put on and a new pair of magpul sights still shot left just not as bad. Decided to go red dot and finally it was on target. The castle nut was loose and never dimpled. The rifle never malfunctioned and always shot. Even suppressed. But by the time I spent all the money to fix the problems and make a few upgrades I was into it for as much as what my nice rifle costed. Ended up getting rid of it and never looked back. Maybe I got one that slipped through qc but feel there are better budget options.
Ruger has figured out how to make affordable, hammer forged rifle barrels. They built a new factory to produce Marlins, and my Mayodan-made marlins are more accurate than my “JM” (pre-Remington fiasco) Marlins. This is HUGE! If it’s not accurate, it’s not interesting. If you have a meh barrel, there is nothing you can do to “fix” the rifle other than re-barrel it.
My first AR is the Ruger AR556 carbine. Bought it when the first came out for like $330 out the door. Friend took it to work to show a coworker who pretty much owns at least 1 of about every high end rifle made. Friend said after he shot it he called the FFL he goes through and ordered 2. I pretty much have an example of 13 of them that were all bought within 2 months. 7 of them have been truck guns there entire life getting the dog crap beat out of them and the hell shot out of them. 2 I’m sure have more than 15 cases of ammo ran through them and nobody has ever mentioned theirs having problems or going down. Mine has more than 5 cases thru it. Would have more but kinda got the bug.. lol Is it a KAC or a Daniel Defense? Absolutely not. It’s a 4X4 work truck that will do the job. It’s not a Ferrari. I put a Magpul stock, grip and drop in handguards on mine. Ruger upgraded trigger that brings trigger weight down and CMMG ambi safety and mag release on mine. I did have a Votex red dot on it but have an astigmatism so I took it off and it’s my iron sights rifle. White light and a milsurp sling attached with paracord. Nothing fancy, just a 4X4 work truck ready to put in work..
Ruger always delivers. I lost count of the Ruger firearms I have from the Blackhawk 357 mag to PC Carbine to the Precision Rimfire Rifle to the venerable 10 22 and others. I'm going to buy the 556 this weekend. The new format is fine but you could spend a little less time with just us watching you shoot. That's a bit boring. Good show.
For no readily apparent reason the RU 556 has shown up via mods in a _bunch_ of games I play, where it's usually my go-to AR. I've always been kinda curious if it was any good IRL, kinda neat to see that it is.
Uh Oh. Watch out S&W, Springfield, PSA, AP, IWI, and many others. I bet this is a confidence booster for a lot of people wanting to get in the AR game.
The Versus video is going to a good watch. I'm wanting to buy an AR, so thanks for reviewing this. I'm interested in the full 1K review, as well. The wood furniture really brings it home for me.
brooooo your wife looks hilarious yet amazing. i dunno why but shes the star of the show. rock on you guys. all the "fashion" memes just flashed in my head and i lost it
Having affordable options is always great. Even if you don't buy them, they help in keeping more expensive rifle makers accountable.
Agreed. Competition is a beautiful thing!
facts
Ruger has a reputation for making good quality affordable weapons.
Doubt it will change the prices of companies asking 3k+ for ARs
@@harpintnRuger is amazing! I bought a new Sig Sauer AR-15... after three shots, I packed it up. Maybe mine is a dud, but Ruger is always 100% ❤

Ah, never mind, this is the standard version I believe. The MPR has Magpul funiture (stock and grip), the radial muzzle brake, and the 452 elite trigger. Oh well, still liked the review!
I was about to tell you Bro. This is definitely standard, love my MPR as well! It’s also B5 furniture not magpul 🍻

Not to rub salt in the wound, but had you reached out to Ruger about it they very likely would have replaced it for you without having to do all that.
I’ve had one of these for years and I would agree that this is a fantastic rifle. I haven’t put an acog on mine but have thought about it.
First rifle was a Ruger 556. Wish I never sold it away. That thing just runs and runs
What a dandy day.
Another very thorough review of another AR…….but this one is SPECIAL !
I OWN ONE……..YEEEEE HAAAA !!!
400 yards is madness 😱. Pushing this to the top of my list.
Would have more but kinda got the bug.. lol
Is it a KAC or a Daniel Defense? Absolutely not. It’s a 4X4 work truck that will do the job. It’s not a Ferrari.
I put a Magpul stock, grip and drop in handguards on mine. Ruger upgraded trigger that brings trigger weight down and CMMG ambi safety and mag release on mine. I did have a Votex red dot on it but have an astigmatism so I took it off and it’s my iron sights rifle. White light and a milsurp sling attached with paracord. Nothing fancy, just a 4X4 work truck ready to put in work..
Hey, that's awesome. As a ruger owner, I was in the mood for some confirmation bias today!
Good show.
Awesome review on this Ruger. Love the Woox on black theme. I love that look! ❤️❤️
I say restore the the old Chevy. Great video.
For no readily apparent reason the RU 556 has shown up via mods in a _bunch_ of games I play, where it's usually my go-to AR. I've always been kinda curious if it was any good IRL, kinda neat to see that it is.
The 16.1" MPR is nice. 1000s of rounds with 0 hiccups. Great rifle for just under $1k
Uh Oh. Watch out S&W, Springfield, PSA, AP, IWI, and many others. I bet this is a confidence booster for a lot of people wanting to get in the AR game.
Love the looks of the Wooks walnut package. Takes a pretty average and mundane AR to something really sexy.
Does the woox stuff weigh alot more than standard furniture? Love the looks!
I like that more than the Smith & Wesson M&P Sport because 1st of all Im biased because Ruger is my favorite gun company and the 556 comes with sights
The Versus video is going to a good watch. I'm wanting to buy an AR, so thanks for reviewing this. I'm interested in the full 1K review, as well. The wood furniture really brings it home for me.
Thank you for this review! I've been waiting since I saw one my first time. Next on my wishlist!
brooooo your wife looks hilarious yet amazing. i dunno why but shes the star of the show. rock on you guys. all the "fashion" memes just flashed in my head and i lost it
I have the 18” Ruger 5.56 with the full size gas system/hand guard and man it is a fucking beast… shoots so so good!
