Brian, I have a 94 F150, which I replaced my rear tank with a Spectra. Now my brother is replacing his 95 F150 side (or front) tank with a Spectra fuel tank. In both cases, the wiring appears to be the same colors as you mentioned in the video. So the video works for both the front or rear fuel tank. Thanks for the helpful video! So when will you start working as a sales rep with Spectra? LOL!!!
Where can a guy find the whole rear wiring harness for these trucks? I have a 1993 302 short cab long box with dual tanks. I have wiring issues. I want to replace the entire rear harness.
I have done electronic installations and electrical work for many years and every industry seems to have their own color codes. But on these fuel pumps it seems ;like they just chose random colors. Junior engineers? After we had the tank in place I realized we didn't have the correct wiring diagram. The only solution that I could think of was pull the tank back out, remove both pumps to compare the wiring. But then I found a youtube video that referred to your video. So, I came over here and got the information that I needed. My son asked me how sure was I that this wiring was correct. I said 95% and that is how we wired it, and it did work. You saved us a lot of time and effort. Thank you.
Wish I had found this two weeks ago. Trying to work with the company to get an explanation is not working well. This was just what I needed for my 1994 f250. Thank you.
Thank you for the video Brian! We used it to replace the fuel pump on my son's F-150 but with a twist! The fuel pump power wire must be broken on down the line because someone spliced into it and ran a black wire all the way to the front of the truck. I still haven't figured out what it is connected to on that end but it cycles the pump perfectly. Thanks again!
Brian you rock, your video is perfect, i put the rear fuel tank in today, wired as you showed and it works perfect, road tested perfect, it switches between fron and rear tanks, i also replaced the fuel filter, Brian your the best, thank you, thank you, thank you, great job!!!!!
this video was an enormous help ! my pump didn't come with any paperwork. i had already dug through ford schematics and came up with the same wire color codes. good job !
Thanks. Good info. I’m currently replacing both front and rear tanks and fuel sending/lift assemblies, fuel selector valve, fuel bowl. Already replaced the mechanical fuel pump a couple months ago. Lots of rust in the old front tank and old fuel bowl. Cleaned out old fuel lines and they are in really good shape. My truck is a 1997 F350 7.3 power stroke. Keeps me busy and I’m learning a lot
You helped me out greatly. Working on a customers e350 with midship single pump. No wiring diagram with the new pump. Our colors were a little different but your vid guided me in the right direction
1994 Mid tank Wiring in new connector.... Thats why i came here but it was for the rear tank and wrong colors of course. So i called Specta.. Spoke with max from tech support, Here ya Go. 1994 Mid tank using Specta Premium Fuel pump I ordered the 16 gallon F14c1fa Truck Side Red > Harness Grey Truck Side Black >Harness Black w White Truck side Orange > Harness Black Truck side green w yellow > Harness Purple
Thank you so much! This was very helpful for me and the wiring of the pump. I bought a TRQ pump from 1A Auto and I believe they are owned by spectra or vise versa, same setup and the Spectra.
You are the man. I used basic process of elimination with the colors that did make sense and only had the orange (vehicle) and black (harness) wire so I was pretty sure. But used your video to validate. We matched! Thanks for the bode of confidence!! Can’t believe I just pulled an original pump out of a 1995 vehicle! (Old one has Ford stamped on top so if it’s not original, it was definitely a dealer job and this baby hasn’t seen a dealership since I was in grade school)
Thank you so much excellent video. Saved me slot of headache. I watched someone else's video and wired it wrong, took the bed off this time, watched your video and it was on point. Thank you
I wired my 92 f150 today, im hoping it will be right scotty is great, watch a lot of his videos, new rear tank and pump going in now, scotty is great watch a lot of his videos, thank you very much!!!
I’m going to use this this weekend! I have a 92 F250 4x4 with 351 and I didn’t know if it even matters but just finding the correct fuel pump online was hard. Apparently ford has a lot of sub models. I need a pump for the side tank but found that ford has 16gal, 18gal, 19gal and there’s a two tube and a three tube fuel pump! My truck appears to be a 19gal 2tube pump! Hope I bought the correct pump. working on this ford reminded me why I only buy Chevy or Dodge.
sick art on the cabinets brother. i lost the paper that came with the pump that explains the wire colors and this was the only place i could find them. much appreciated.
Most excellent! Saved me a world of heartache. Damn shame you have to take the bed off to get to the fuel pumps. You would think such a critical component would be readily accessible
Good video. I'm not sure why any manufacturer would change the colors from one side of the plug to the other, but they do sometimes. I leave the stock plug alone and splice near the pump assembly, looking where the wires go on the inside (pump side) of both units and splice accordingly. Don't use those crappy crimp connectors anywhere that there will be moisture unless you use heat shrink with sealant. Talking about wiring, I worked on a ford tractor where every wire was black. Each wire had a printed number such as B21 stamped along its length to identify them. I spliced the wires on a replacement ford blower motor, orange to orange black to black. really simple but motor ran backwards, Had to go orange to black. Who's dumb idea was this. manufacturer should just have made both wires black.
Dear Sir i don't know if you will see this but i just want to say think very much because this video i was finnaly able to get my 1994 Ford F150 wired correctly cause i had to buy the fuel pump asembl;y and fuel filter My God Bless you and yours sir
Thanks for making the vid it helped me and my dad out alot figuring out the wiring for the pumps. I just did a 38 gallon tank conversion in the rear and replaced my front tank.
I'm changing the fuel pump on the front tank of a 1994 f150 and my original colors are orange black red and a blue with a yellow stripe. The replacement pump wires are black gray purple and black with white stripe.
I like the way you rubberized the fuel strap. I am suffering from trying to figure out colors of the wires.Previous owner or someone rigged up the wiring, which became unrigged. Breaks my heart since when it ran, it was beautiful/ 1996 w/ 300 cu in motor.
This is good, though I was looking for something else but this may help me anyway- For one, that note about the rear tank CHECK VALVE on the pump, not working, and sending gasoline back to the front tank...Hey, that takes the mystery out of so much- Why my rear tank was dry in no time but the front had a half tank, but I didn't put gas in it... Right now I have seven different error codes with the CHECK ENGINE light- Purge Valve, oxygen sensor, mass air flow sensor...just to name a few. But after replacing the purge valve sensor, it still says it's faulty, but I hear it click ON and off...working. I'm thinking that these seven may be on the same designated wiring harness (?). That's the video I was looking for, but this was stil educational.
Thank you! Can’t tell you how much tome & $ I spent on parts I replaced over wiring the new fuel pump wrong. The new fuel pump’s connector did not match the one on the vehicle. So I used the old connector and wired everything myself. For some strange reason, I assumed that the red wire from the fuel pump was positive. Boy was I wrong. The gray is positive and the red was actually supposed to be purple. But with my luck, the colors came all f’d up.
Great vid! I'm replacing the FP on my side tank. 1996 F150 351W Eddie Bower. The FP I got from Amazon came with a new connector and similar instructions for the new wiring. My confusion ,at this point, is that the new FP plugs right into the factory connector going to the engine bay. So, my confusion or question is, if the new harness has the proper connector to plug into the factory harness is the rewiring necessary?
Hello Brian could you please explain to me the details about the check valve gone bad and the symptoms found to lead you to the change? I was wondering how come my front fuel tank was full to cap and have not been filling it and only using my rear tank with active level indication. If I use my front fuel tank I use my trip odometer to figure where I am at fuel tank capacity. Funny thing, when I run off front tank I get no hesitations, but in my rear it hesitates once in a while while slowing down, then increasing speed. 1997 Old Body Style F-250HD 5.8L dual tanks Your problems sound similar to what I am experiencing. I'm your one person. Been fussing about this for a week now on my 95 F-150. Doing fuel pumps on both tanks. I'm wondering if I should cut off the Spectra pig tail off and just tie into the Spectra wires with the Ford original connector. Thanks for your video. Loved it! Hope you'll make more. Now your 6th subscriber. Thanks!
+Patrick PhippsPA Best of luck man, Thanks for the comment... Just got a restoration catalog for the F-150, now i'm gonna be out of control. Just got a new factory oil pan and gasket to end the embarrassing oil drip. I will be sure to upload that and much more... many people have helped me over the years on youtube... always hoped to help just one... Prolly won't ever forget that you were my first ever 'Thanks' comment / viewer.
year old comment but if anyone is reading this is the way to go, never cut the factory harness! unless the wiring is damaged. spectra is shipping these with both style connectors now(atleast both that I purchased) so if the connector that is already on it doesn't fit you can cut it off and splice the other connector on.
I'm in the same boat right now but I don't like where I have to cut the harness of my truck. Just wondering if you could cut/ splice the connector off your old fuel pump, wire in the adapter harness off the new pump and just plug it into the factory harness so you don't have to cut the connector off the truck. Just wondering if you think that would work
I have the typical ford fuel pump over pressurization problem. The rear tank becomes pressurized so much so that when I open the cap after a drive, gas flies out like a fire hose.
Thank you very much. My replacement unit is aftermarket so I thought that was why the wires were different. My vehicle is the E150? I think everything is the same.
Wm M - I still don't understand why the wires are so different... but it seemed to be a popular searched item. Hope it works for you as good as it worked for my truck. Take care.!!
So if i want to check if my fuel pump works i can use a power probe to feed 12 v power to the black/ white cable and ground to the orange wire, and that should start the pump? would i have to do anything else with the other two cables on the connector? thanks
I’m so confused I wired mine up the first time and the truck ran but show way passed F on full tank.. did it exactly like you show and now he truck dies when I switch to this tank
Thanks for the video and info. I have a 1996 Ford F 250. I put in a new rear tank and fuel pump. They came together as a kit that I got thru A 1 Auto. All of the electrical connections fit. When I turn the key on I can hear the pump come on for a couple of seconds like it is supposed to. The pump is not pumping gas. Its not even pumping up to the filter. I took the line off that goes in to the filter and nothing comes out when I turn the key on. I put 4 gallons in the tank and the gauge seems to be working. Its shows a little less than a quarter of a tank. Any suggestions? Thanks
I had the same problem, my 93 f150 had a rusted tank and we decided to swap the pump as well since it was starting to not send fuel as good. When we installed the new pump and put the tank back in and tried to start the truck, the pump relay was clicking and we could hear the pump make a sound, but no fuel was being sent to the engine. The fuel couldn't even make it to the filter so Im wondering if I got a faulty pump or if something else is wrong with it. I tested the lines and their fine, I can suck fuel from the to tank to where the filter is, but the pump isn't working. PLEASE HELP
Hey I have a 1988 Ford F-150 with a 1991 5.0 in it and I replaced the ignition and fuel relay and the fuel pump now I have no power to my front tank and was wondering if you could help me out with it the truck will turn over but there’s no power going to the pump
I have a 94 Ford F150 and I’m trying to redo the wires for the front fuel tank fuel sending unit and it is not work it come on but does not pump fuel why
Had a quick question if anybody happens to know. My 95-wiring harness has the colors orange, blue/yellow stripe, black and red. I can't seem to figure out the correct wiring setup. If anybody has any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I believe That's the front pump harness. Orange is pump ground Red is pump power Blue/yellow stripe is guage power Black is guage ground Aftermarket wires Gray pump power Black pump ground Purple guage power Black/white stripe guage ground Hope you've solved your issues but this could maybe help others doing front fuel pump aftermarket wiring.
Anyone have suggestions on how to verify proper polarity to the fuel pump? Video poster remarks that some folks have wired their pump backwards. Would it function at all? Poor pressure? Noisy? Wanna do the job right, do it once, dropping tank a pain. What about testing pump flow into a bucket with both polatities, and see which direction gives best flow??? Comments welcome.
@@OverTaxed42Long Sold the Bronco. Been awhile since I look at it. Hayes Manual? Does the old pump have clearly marked Positive and Negative at the actual pump cartridge inside the plastic assembly? Even if you have to change the connector, can't you trace the wires? Colors may not match, but look at the actual position of the wires attached to the "wiper" on the fuel level sender assembly. There are four wires total right? Two thick ones, and two thin ones? Thin ones are for fuel level, and thick ones are for power. If you have doubt about polarity of power to fuel pump, then test it in a bucket in your driveway, away from house. Use diesel, as it won't burn as easy as gasoline. Get all your info, BEFORE you mount pump in tank. Good luck.
now cant you just take the 2 tee fittings behind the fuel filter n bridge the return to the sender bypassing both a leaky front tank and a bad return valve in the non leaking rear tank.....
Check to see if it's getting fuel , connect a pressure gauge on the fuel regulator ,if its carburetor disconnect the line that goes to the carb and put a cup to catch fuel and crank to see if it shoots fuel
Brian, I have an 86 F150 4.9 engine mechanical fuel pump, with wire colors that are (yellow w/ white stripe and a solid black) I recently replaced the 86 cab with an 89 cab with a 5.0 engine. How can I connect the fuel sending wires of the 86 to the fuel switch selector of the 89? The colors of the 89 F150 cab are as follows (yellow w/ blue stripe, yellow w/ white stripe, brown w/white stripe, light blue w/ yellow stripe, red w/ yellow stripe and solid red.) I never get an accurate gas reading, as the fuel gauge either reads past full, or half. I bought a brand new sending unit to help, but since I don't have the wire connected correctly, It doesn't read correctly. Please help!
i got a 92 f150 single tank .i the pump whent bad cause of rust in the tank so i got a plastic tank and a new pump ,but i go to plug it in and the trucks plug is geting 8 volts and 6volts constent ,no 3 second burst ,pulled the relay ,still getting constent power ,,help?
Have you tried a complete jump wire from the positive battery to the pump, to bypass everything in between? You can also try a jump ground, or both... If doesn't help, I found this post from a ford forum. Hope you find your problem! Best of luck!!! www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1107108-voltage-required-to-start-fuel-pump.html

PLEASE HELP
Mid tank is red would that be the yellow wire ?
Helped me big time. Thank you so much!!

1992 ford crown victoria fuel pump wiring colors
Huge help man thank you
I have a 94 Ford F150 and I’m trying to redo the wires for the front fuel tank fuel sending unit and it is not work it come on but does not pump fuel why
Had a quick question if anybody happens to know. My 95-wiring harness has the colors orange, blue/yellow stripe, black and red. I can't seem to figure out the correct wiring setup. If anybody has any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I believe That's the front pump harness. Orange is pump ground
Red is pump power
Blue/yellow stripe is guage power
Black is guage ground
Aftermarket wires
Gray pump power
Black pump ground
Purple guage power
Black/white stripe guage ground
Hope you've solved your issues but this could maybe help others doing front fuel pump aftermarket wiring.
the front tank has its own and the rear tank has its own
Do you have a picture of the paper that had the wiring?
My issue is I have all the wires correct, pump runs but the fuel gauge reads past full
yo man great video I have a 95 f150 had the same problems.
Thanks man, appreciate it! Take care.
Can someone explain to me what is power and ground for the other two wires that isn’t for the pump
Good video. 👍
I have 3 solid black wires
2 from new pump
1 from the truck side
Does anyone have any information on this?
this really helped me out thank you so much
Anyone have suggestions on how to verify proper polarity to the fuel pump? Video poster remarks that some folks have wired their pump backwards. Would it function at all? Poor pressure? Noisy? Wanna do the job right, do it once, dropping tank a pain. What about testing pump flow into a bucket with both polatities, and see which direction gives best flow??? Comments welcome.
You ever get a correct diagram?
Good luck.
My original harnes wire colors are red, orange, black, and blue with a yellow stripe, can anyone tell me which ones go with which?
Same thing I'm currently dealing with right now which is cut from my front tank harness plug.
I have the same colors on my harness and I would like to know which wires go where also
now cant you just take the 2 tee fittings behind the fuel filter n bridge the return to the sender bypassing both a leaky front tank and a bad return valve in the non leaking rear tank.....
thought tht might be a good question
have a Ford 1986 f150 it will fire but won't start replaced fuel pump what else could it be please help me
Check to see if it's getting fuel , connect a pressure gauge on the fuel regulator ,if its carburetor disconnect the line that goes to the carb and put a cup to catch fuel and crank to see if it shoots fuel
My 1990 bronco is
black
Yellow
Red
Orange.
Still lost.....
You the man 💯
Thanks for your help ! I really appreciate it !!!
The colors of the 89 F150 cab are as follows (yellow w/ blue stripe, yellow w/ white stripe, brown w/white stripe, light blue w/ yellow stripe, red w/ yellow stripe and solid red.)
I never get an accurate gas reading, as the fuel gauge either reads past full, or half.
Best of luck!!! www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1107108-voltage-required-to-start-fuel-pump.html
the pump works its somthing in the dash or somthing
Great video
Should there be 12v at the pump? Mine is showing 6v.
There needs to be 12v
