  • The tricky “Roll Up” vinyasa shows up not once, but three times within Ashtanga’s Primary Series. While many people have difficulty doing this movement, it can absolutely become part of your practice once you have our tips in mind!
In this video, we’re breaking down the “ROLL UP” VINYASA that’s introduced in Ashtanga Yoga’s Primary Series. While we focus less on alignment in this tutorial and more on the transitional movements, you’ll still learn the Sanskrit count and alignment cues for the 3 poses in which this action takes place: SUPTA KONASANA, UBHAYA PADANGUSTHASANA, and URDHVA MUKHA PASCHIMATTANASANA. You’ll understand the similarities in this vinyasa among the 3 poses as well as how it varies between each one. We also give you tips and suggestions to help make the movement, as well as the static pose, more accessible within each vinyasa.

Omygosh i was just telling my sis in law what you said about laughing it off looking silly. When i first started yoga i was so afraid to try harder poses for fear of not achieving them and looking silly. Like it was a defeat. Now i welcome the challenge and try no matter how amateur i look its called progression :)

Thank you so much guys! I've currently reached these asanas under the promise of one of my teachers who argued they were a piece of cake. I look like a hot dog rolling, I really needed this tutorial 🤣🙏

Thanks for this video. These roll ups can be difficult. But for me, they feel good when I get them right. Your tips about rounding the full back are helpful.

Pushing with the heel did it for me. I had a teacher tell me to do that since it also helps keep the legs straight. And I’m glad you mentioned feeling it in the back to come up because when I don’t feel it, I can’t get up. Great discussion!

I learned a lot on the "rolling up" vinyasa and take particular attention to the rounding and deep flexion, but you didn't say what the breath was doing....exhaling on going into it????

I really need this tutorial. I am finding it impossible to roll up in these three poses without bending my legs. I shall try to follow all your advice when I next practise and see how I get on.🙏
