  • Gravity generators in Space Engineers can be incredibly fun to play around with. We take a closer look at both the regular gravity generator and the spherical gravity generator. These can be combined with artificial mass blocks in all sorts of fun ways in order to make launch systems for drop pods or anything else you want to launch at high speed ;)
    If you've got any of your own tips or builds I'd love to read them or be sent the link.
    As always, don't forget to enjoy this awesome (if at times buggy) game!

    Artificial gravity stops working at 0.5g of planetary gravity. Moons have 0.25g so that's why you can use it there.
    Spherical gravity generators are perfect to create gravity shields. If you set them up to repel, anything that is affected by gravity in a 400 meter bubble will get repelled. This is useful to avoid any projectiles with artificial mass on, or even repel ships with a gravity drive on.
    Gravity drives can be extremely powerful, but they have the complication that the mass block position matters. When he launched his escape pod thingy, it got turned upwards cause the mass blocks weren't aligned to the center of mass of the ship. This is important if you want your ship to fly moreless straight while using one. The easiest way to do it is to place all mass blocks around the center of mass.
    Finally a gravity drive that works in all directions is possible but hard to control without a script.
    Also you can use gravity generators to create a gravity gun to throw what may or may not be explosives at your friends.

      how about a debris shield? 2 generators, one attracts with a longer range, the other repels with a shorter range. the setup keeps debris in a orbit.

      @@spacebear4742 Haha, genius! You could fill it up with stone or heavy armor blocks just floating around in it, and then you could have 'shield replenishers' that is a welder-welder-grinder set up that just continually weld heavy armor blocks and cuts them off to float off into the rest of the debris cloud!

    One of my favorite gravity-related tools is quite similar to your escape pod tube. Using a cargo container, some parachutes, and an artificial mass block to launch supplies to my planetary bases around the system. With good planning, you can even set a grinder pit of some kind where the cargo container will land and have the resource transfer be completely automated. Plus it's nice and dramatic to "call-in" supply drops from orbit.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому +4

      That would be a pretty cool system to build, how do you line up the drop so that it's directly over the grinding pit though?

    • @kevingriffith6011
      @kevingriffith6011 6 років тому +5

      I generally drop from a station, which being stationary means that everything dropped should land in roughly the same area, barring any unforeseen interruptions. Generally you'll want to build the surface base you're supplying with this in mind, possibly using the drop site for the base location. I've seen someone use an extremely long line of projected armor blocks to help line up your shot, if you're launching from a spacecraft, but I'm not sure the limits of how far a projector can cast an image.

    Thanks to this guide, I came up with an idea that I've just made a reality.
    A gravity generator powered man cannon, capable of launching a player into orbit from the surface of the moon.
    It took ~3 hours to create and tweak the grav fields to only affect the chute, but it will be worth it as soon as I get my friend on tomorrow and send him flying.

    On the server I play on I have made a ship with a 160G gravity cannon that fires stone or "cannonball" ingots at thousands of meters per second (speed limit is removed)
    One shot will tear a vanilla red ship in half
    Heavy armor doesn't fare much better than light
    Even the servers custom armor which is 8X stronger than vanilla heavy armor is no match for my gravity cannon
    Even with shields most players give my turf a wide berth because of that ship
    The only ship that could tank a shot from it was the admins creative mode ship which had 4 layers of advanced armor and a bunch of shield generators
    First shot took his shields down
    Second shot blew a hole into his ship
    Third shot blew a hole right through it

    • @Splitsie

      it is more fun than it sounds
      being able to use waste material as a weapon is hilarious
      especially since his decoy blocks didnt do anything lol
      just beware that it will probably tank your sim speed a lot unless you have an overclocked CPU
      the server uses a sub zero cooled i7-6700k overclocked to 6.5GHZ
      and even that dropped sim speed a decent amount during the battle

      @mwbgaming28 4 роки тому +3

      @@thorodinson292 yeah but then I have regular turrets, pulse laser turrets and 2 big bertha cannons to fall back on as a backup
      And this ship is designed to take just as much punishment as it can dish out (my testing for this thing was to see if it could destroy itself, then reinforce the hell out of it until it cant) it can take a full broadside from 5 of every weapon in the OKI weapons pack at the same time without shields, and only pierce the first, MAYBE the second layer of armor out of the 20 layers protecting the engineering section (which is where the reactors, gravity drive, normal thrusters.etc are)
      and 30 layers protecting the cockpit (which contains the medical room, teleport pad, armory, cryo bay, and a hangar with a heavily shielded escape pod that itself contains a jump drive, fixed lasers, an assembler, a survival kit, a refinery, 4 cryopods 4 passenger seats, and a herald terminal with 500k heralds, heralds are a way of converting one resource into another, effectively selling ingots you don't need, and using the heralds to buy the ones you do need)
      Its an absurdly expensive ship, and would probably bankrupt my faction if we lost it, though the gravity cannon has been upgraded to 300G and more ejectors have been added, so now it's capable of singoe shot mode, 30/sec rapid fire mode, and 50 pellet shotgun mode (that last one is possibly the most evil thing I have ever made, I tested it against a vanilla red ship, and it literally deleted it apart from some floating scrap metal pieces and a few stray armor blocks)

    A little thing I've noticed: if you were to simulate a ring habitat, you'd have to spin the ring around the other axis so that the "centrifugal force" you're simulating with the generator actually always is orthogonal to your axis of rotation.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  5 років тому +2

      I'm not really sure I understand what you mean by 'other axis'. Given the spherical generator if you wanted to create a ring station etc you'd probably be best with a group of them in a line (so that you get even gravitational force for the width of the ring) then just have the ring spin around that line, from what I remember doing in this video I just did a similar thing except with one generator and one line of blocks. Not sure how useful it'd be to do in SE though since you'd be unable to build on most surfaces of the ring :(

    I did made some kind of gravity accelerator thing myself with around... maybe 300 gravity generators. Then I thought that “Hey! I’ve built something accelearting things to extreme speeds, but I can’t do that, because of 100m/s speed limit!” So, when I did activate and test 1000m/s speed limit modification mod, I was super excited that my gun is finally working... And, when I did press that launch sequence button opening gates and everything, it did actually eject my sort of warhead out of my ship. When I was looking at those 6 layers of heavy armor, it did destroy only one block and then gone through and far far away into space with 1000 m/s velocity... Well, another point for Physics Malfunction!

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  5 років тому +1

      That is one of the sad side effects of super speeds - the game doesn't have time to calculate the collisions and some weird things happen. At least those weird things happen less often under 100m/s now :P

Even flying my fighter at 150m/s and firing some missiles cause me to catch those missiles and test my shields against them... I'm experimenting with a gravity powered ore transport system. I've built an ore receiving spaceship which I point at an asteroid. The ore shooting space craft flies in a straight line from the Ore receiver towards the asteroid.
    Once there I turn it into a station and have a gravity gun shooting ore towards the receiving ship (over long distance I hope) . Multiple grav generators first slow down the ore and then lead it towards some collectors into the system. It's still in testing phase but from a distance where the receiver is still visible it works.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  5 років тому

      That visual range will always be the trouble, since you'll need to have it visible for the game to not cull those objects. I'm not sure which settings will allow things to remain present for longer, but I believe you'll need to increase floating objects and turn off trash clean up to get the most out of a system like that :)

      I played around some more; apparently the stake (it really is just a massive stake) doesn't work without mass blocks. If I turned off the mass blocks, the projectile would just float in the barrel...

    • @Splitsie

      They'd likely be talking about repelling player made torpedoes which often contain mass blocks so they can be accelerated by grav gens on board the ship. However if the torpedoes are thruster based then the grav gens will do nothing, so they're not a particularly effective defensive strategy :(

      Sadly vanilla gravity generators won't work that way, there are some mods that will change gravity generators to affect other grids which you could try if you're happy to use mods. Otherwise you could use landing gear to lock them and maybe with a shunting vehicle push the grid into your grinders

    Does the scripting language let you detect the level of Planetary gravity? If so it should be pretty easy to make a script that keeps the grav generator off-setting the moon gravity to allow space designed ships to run to moon bases very safely. A 3 block setup to convert a space-only ship to moon capable would be nice to have.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому +1

      I'm not sure if the programmable blocks can access that information but even if they could it would likely require more than 3 blocks for a system like that to work. The artificial mass blocks pretend to be a certain amount of mass, you'd need more force against them if their total mass was less than the ship's own.
      For example if your ship has a total mass of 100,000kg and the artificial mass total is 50,00kg then you'll need to have twice as much gravitational acceleration from your grav gens as there is planetary gravity for neutral flight.
      I probably should have pointed out that function of the artificial mass blocks in the video but I hadn't really thought about it :P

    • @dndhatcher
      @dndhatcher 6 років тому

      On the moon you are fighting .25G with grav generators capable of .5G so you get at least double the bang per mass block per grav generator. I still cant read the API specs very well, but did not see a planetary gravity property available. I'll have to look at the fancy flight info script in detail and see if there are any clues there.

      I've got horizontal docking working on planets with a highly reliable setup but space just isn't playing ball. Even with the remote sitting over the centre of mass it starts jiggling about at each way point which means it's not aligned when it approaches the final docking point. Is there a way to kind of, cheat, with Gravity Generators? Kind of like a Mass Effect drive. Use it to lower the mass of a ship within a planets gravity field, so that your thrusters don't have to work as hard. I mean, if you can create negative gravity, then couldn't you make a 1 million Kg ship float without expensive upward thrusters? A cheap way of flight. If what I said makes any sense.

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  5 років тому

      Gravity generators won't work in planetary grav fields stronger than 0.5G, so yes you can, but only at very high altitude or on moons and you'd also want to be perfectly oriented or it'll just drag you off to one side :/

    • @Splitsie

      Tested. So artificial gravity in planetary gravity is AgResult = Ag - Pg*2 if Pg > 0.05 and Pg < 0.5. Else AgResult = Ag if Pg = 0.5)
      You can use theese results to make grav drive hover or just turnon in effective range. Interesting results btw 0.4 Pg is not very far from the surface and 20% effectiveness of my grav drive allows my ship to hover or accelerate whithout any thrusters in a planetary gravity. It is very and very useful on survive and on survive pvp to save fuel on approach or tactical run. And I am talking about 3-10 kkg(kt) ship I am scripting right now 😀 and there are no limits cuz you allways can make stronger Gravdrive to beat Pg on low Ageffective result or to move even 100kt ship

    • @Splitsie
      @Splitsie  6 років тому

      When I was playing around for this video I was surprised at how low you had to go before they cut out. Should be pretty cool when you get the script functional :)

    • @uncheat
      @uncheat 6 років тому

      Well, if you place the grav gen at 1G output and a cockpit in it's field then go to less than 0.5 PG you'll AG rise, and it's output on your hud (a-gravity) will show how a-gravity is effective on the Planet one. Let's take 1 A-Mass (50t) and 1 Grav Drive (1G) so how much X kg it can lift at PG 0.4? X = A-mass * (Ag - Pg*2) / Pg = 50000 * (1 - 0.4 * 2)/ 0.4 = 25000 or 25t =) and next is funny thing! You can multiply A-masses or Gravity gens to rise this number =) In my vision of constructing G-drives it's like 1/3(Gen/mass) or 2/3(Gen/Mass) I make the mass cube and surround it with 8-9 gens on each side (8 on 1-2 sides to place the armor block to merge it with ship) or just 9 on front or back side and 1 or couple on other sides for a strafe :)
      For example I've 27 A-mass and 13 GravGens on Z axi(Forward back) and 1 on each X and Y axis for a strafe moves on my proto ship (can add more if i'll need it). So this setup for my 3 kt ship(empty) produces the forward acceletarion 57.33 m/s^2 ! or 4.41 m/s^2 for strafes (where is only one Gen on axi). And When the ship is full of cargo on hard survive I play (x1 inventory) means ship is 10.000.000 kg or 10kt the forward acceletarion is 17.199 !! And it works even without any Ion Thrusters :) So you can build 100% of the ship on a surface of any planet because grav parts do not need platinum to build. And use Hydrogen thrusters to rich the needed Pg to hover or accelerate (in vertical position for example) :)
      p.s. I'll load the script on the workshop after I'll make all systems for any ship in it =) Work in progress atm
