    Keen have released a new major update for Space Engineers and it's got some things I'm very happy with, including auto-rotate remaining off when you reload!
    It's also got some cool new updates to wheels, a couple of pretty changes (and some not so pretty) as well as integration of Ansel which might prove handy for workshop photography.
    I'm genuinely happy about the fact I can now drive wheeled vehicles without using gyroscopes, but I don't think we can call the hop feature a safety feature as it keeps destroying more of my rovers than even my awful driving.

    One thing I personally enjoy about the new overhaul is the new particle system. The welding and grinding look so much better now. Oh, and drilling looks pretty awesome, too. Something I'm not crazy about is the new door sounds. Part of them almost sounds like you're being sucker punched or something lol The wheel changes are definitely nice, and in a way, they actually do work more realistically; for example, friction is now assumed instead of being what seemed like an afterthought. Aside from that, contrary to other opinions, I quite like everything that Keen brought to the table with this update. I think my only other "gripe" would be that they haven't quite figured out how to make the helmet visor have its own texture yet, which is what they need to do with the new "lens effects" Looks great for the visor (and maybe for the actual camera lenses, the kind of smudged, dirty effect, that is), looks kind of iffy for everything else. And unfortunately, with the state of "alleviating" mods for the issue, it's either leave it on everywhere (unmodded) or turn it on everywhere (modded).

      Completely agree on the particles, interacting with things using your tools is very pretty. I especially like that my torch turns on even if I'm not pointing at something :)
      Actually I agree with you on all those points, here's to keen hopefully listening and making some of the changes at least to bring the post-processing more in line with what Dr Novikov's done with Space Just Got Real :)

    I've noticed that clouds going across the sun now dim the daylight slightly.
    Hopefully a sign that dynamic weather may be coming in future. :)

    Speaking about jump feature. A slider for it's power would be nice. Also if you jump on the higher ground -> you fall from lesser height so wheels won't be destroyed. Leaping out of the craters is sure would be useful.

    Im impressed you didn't go straight to the auto rotate feature as the first thing you mentioned but i am loving this update too. Driving does feel so much more fun now. But what will you wish for now that your auto rotate has been granted?

    A couple things I've noticed: [it may just be me]
    -My dude seems get injured much more easily, and makes the injured sound even when he just falls a little hard without health loss.
    -There are these large chunks that now appear and dance away when mining, that look like something to pick up but you can't; they fade away after a little bit. Very annoying to me.
    -Colors are now much closer to what they appear to be in the color picker.
    -Everything is so much more shiny when there's light, making it really hard to see not just in the dark.
    -Did the skybox change? I don't remember it being so hard to see the planets from in atmosphere before

      Peter Sheridan try running into a wall at 10m/s it wont hurt but the character still grunts

      I feel like my character has turned into a tennis player, he's grunting all the time, but then again maybe I'm just clumsy :P
      The gloss is definitely much higher on the metal parts than it used to be, but it is nice that with this the colour picker has become more accurate - even if it's meant that some of our colours have changed since the update

      Yeah I noticed that I take a bit of damage from small heights (1-2 large blocks) now, even in .5 gravity. 1 thing I noticed with the welder at least is that it keeps welding after the block has completed, but the animation/effects look great.

    You can control how powerful the suspension jump is by releasing x before the suspension travels down all the way. If you try to use jump to free an ore carrier in a 1x game it will totally need all that power.

    I’m loving the new update so far. I like the post-processing, to be honest. One thing I haven’t seen them address (it’s more of a bug then a feature anyway) is how your engineer will never stand perfectly upright in a gravity field, even an omnidirectional artificial one. It throws my brain for a loop when all the walls are angled at like 2 degrees

    I really hope Keen watches videos like this one. Great improvement ideas.
    The one thing I don't like is the new jetpack speed. In my opinion, it is too "powerful" in that you need no ships to go somewhere with the exeption that you don't have much inventory.

      I agree, even before the update I have been tempted to use some of the mods that make the jet pack less useful :P

    The yellow glow is now gone from vanilla LCD'S :)... the dark ore indicators are gone from the ground :( devastating without ore detector! Maybe it's a part of the survival update and it got accidentally sent out... one could wish!

      WarPickle Sadly the small grid ore detector is about a use full as finding ore with a pointed stick. You need the dark spots it to even know where to start. I need to be at least 150-200m for it and the large ship one should be massive. If they were we wouldn't need dark spots

      I was watching Xocliw stream on release day and he said he thinks he knows why they are missing.... he also had a look on his face like it wasn't supposed to happen yet and like he knew why... kinda grinning.

      I'd love more hands on stuff like Immersive engineering mod adds to minecraft with ore sampling etc to get a general idea of that in a large region etc then larger range ore detector to fine tune finding specific ores

      I was thinking about the ore detectors and how they are very processor intensive, in combination with the 'prospecting' type ideas you're talking about you could have the detectors modified that would cause them to be less load on a server/host while having a larger range.
      All they'd need to do would be to change them from a continuous mode to a manual ping mode. Instead of always updating as we fly we could have them like jump drives, where they have to charge up and can then ping a much larger range as it would only have to be calculated occasionally - there could even be a delay before the result to allow the calculations to happen over multiple ticks. The markers that are created at that time can then stay on your HUD for a short period until they decay.

    As I was watching that final segment of the video you did in Ansel, I had a thought that it functionality would make for some great opening credits footage. Imagine a space battle in progress and as the camera sweeps and pans around an isolated moment, the credits are displayed. And as the last of the credits text fades, Ansel is turned off and everything starts moving.

    They also changed player speeds as well. Player speed for walk/run/sprint has been changed from 2/4/7 m/s to 3/6/10 m/s. The player speed limit has also been increased to 110 m/s from 107.

    Thanks for the space just got real mod recommendation, will try that. Just need a mod to get rid of the lense flare on the sun as it looks dumb in my opinion. Then I should be sorted.
    I get home tomorrow so I shall be taking a look first hand then.
    Great update video. You have a talent for getting to the heart of the matter and showing what is important.
    I really love that transition from direct light to shadow you pointed out.

      Thanks so much, I try to add something where I can rather than just reading off the patch notes :P
      Dr Novikov has said on reddit that he's going to continue working on the Space Just Got Real mod until it looks similar to what it used to - shadows being dark and sharp. So hopefully it will continue to improve over the coming weeks :)

    you missed the new setting for the wheels, i forgot what it's called but it's a button that you turn on or off and if it's on, when you do a jump or are falling, the suspension on the wheels will automatically adjust to be softer i think to lower the impact of the landing.

    Keen actually made wheels *more* realistic in this update, not less. They were previously making a pretty big omission when calculating the wheel friction, and now that they are doing it properly the wheels are much more realistic and also much more fun

      While they added static friction, they created a completely false model of the centre of mass, that's the gameplay focused part of the changes, even after adding the static friction wheeled vehicles were apparently difficult to control :)

      Splitsie oh, that's right! They did mention that adding static friction made it "slightly" more likely to catastrophically roll vehicles before the virtual center of mass was added :p

    Space Engineers stopped working on my potato after this update (most of the time it crashes when loading any map, even completely empty ones), but thankfully I was able to revert to the previous version. Maybe this will motivate me to finally upgrade my PC.

      Have you checked your graphics settings?
      It auto-switched to medium. I thought my game was gone too until I realized.

      I've made sure it's set to low before first loading my game. The few rare times I've managed to play it, it was great. Performance didn't deteriorate in any way I could notice; it's just RAM and graphics card memory that causes the crashes.

      They're working on hotfixes! Fingers crossed they get these fixed! But a pc upgrade is never a bad investment :)

      I'm a pessimist when it comes to early access games being updated, keeps my expectations low and my enjoyment much higher :)
      Still, just 2 months into the year and we've seen some very nice updates, I've got my fingers crossed they'll do something good with the rumoured survival update but I'm not expecting it any time soon :P

    When you did the wheel jump did you have the air shock on I haven't had an explosion yet

      I did have air shock on, but yes I also jumped a little downhill. From what I've seen it's mainly the 5x5 wheels that are likely to cause damage with how high they fling you as I lost wheels jumping on flat ground.
      I feel like this is something that will certainly be tweaked in coming patches though

    Overall I like the update, but I share a lot of issues that most people have. I really like the "your visor has all the dirt/vignette filters on it, but you don't have them when you take it off" idea, though, and taking it a step further you could theoretically add a "welding visor" (Cycling through the three modes on the same button wouldn't be that cumbersome) to darken the screen up for while you're welding.

      If they do add something like that, it would be very cool to have it fully moddable and let the modders go crazy with different looks that could even match the different helmet types :P

    Great Video! I'm loving the new update myself, the new explosion effects and block destruction are definitely my highlights. I don't like the dirty windows and screens. It bugs the heck out of me and no "sane" person would allow their windows to be that dirty. Maybe there should be a repaint effect for windows so you can have the choice of dirty or clean....

      I'm with splitsie on this one. It'd be kind of cool to have the dirt/vignette filters on while the helmet was on and then remove them when you take it off. While it would be a neat immersion mechanic like Metro 2033 (Your helmet takes damage in combat, can break, can get dirty and need to be wiped off with a dedicated button) I feel like it would be cool for the first 5 times, then get super annoying and tedious.

      I agree with you that having a cleaner version of the windows would be nice, but I can understand it's hard to balance for keen since the engine seems to have a hard time rendering reflections efficiently and they need to make the glass visible. I just wish they'd make it slightly tinted instead of dirty :P
      As with the helmet, I feel like having it dirty would encourage the use of pressurised spaces which would be a nice mechanic for that - though would suck for people who can't run with pressurisation on...

      While it would be nice to be able to use symmetry mode in Survival, I personally feel that it would detract from the immersion of having to do everything by hand. Creative mode is meant for speed and prototyping, so symmetry and block lines and planes make perfect sense.

      I think it would be great if the Projector enabled symmetry by adding the mirror pairs as projected blocks. However, that would mean that the game has to keep track of on-the-fly modifications to whats loaded in the projector, not to mention trying to keep it synced in multiplayer. So I'm not too upset if that sort of thing gets put off for later.

      Maybe an alternative would be to have a terminal you can access in survival that loads up a tiny version of a world that you can use for designs that then automatically saves to a blueprint, sort of like an ingame creative mode but without any physics calculations and limited to block placements. If they could make a stripped down version of the client that way it should be lightweight enough, and in multiplayer you have it so that it only runs on the client end until the saving of the blueprint meaning it wouldn't tax the server.

    If there is a possibility to either hide Ansel panel or make it horizontal on the bottom of the screen, you can do not only cool screenshots, but also film really impressive cinematic with it (making it looking ultra-wide with black stripes on the top and on the bottom) . I guess we need to expect a lot more beautiful scenes in Space Engineers videos, which can attract more players :)
    But question is: what is the performance hit? Not everyone has a 1080 on his rig :/

      I completely agree, it would be cool to set up some shots with it :)
      On the performance side of things, I've heard some people have issues with the update making their performance worse, but I'm not sure how old your graphics card would need to be for that to be the case. With all the extra shaders and graphics particles I imagine that cards from a couple of generations ago would be hard hit, whereas it's probably minimal or even slightly improved with more recent ones. W4sted was going to re-do his benchmarking so those results could be interesting

      Splitsie I have 1060 with 6gb and hope it will not get worse. Had no chance to test it yet.
      Regarding W4sted, I am waiting for those as well. My friends have older cards, so this might change a lot.

      I'd be surprised if you suffer since your card was designed with this stuff in mind. Sadly my only older cards I can test on are a 970 which should be fine, and a 680m which couldn't handle the game anyway :P

    I was thinking that the "Space just got Real" mod was going to be rendered obsolete by the new update, but I'm really glad I'm wrong about that. Also, I did not know about that Nvidea "Ansel" thing. Where do I find it, and, how do you activate that in game? I have not tried SE with the new update yet, but what I have seen so far looks very promising.

    The falling speed is better for a realistic jump, but unfortunately this is achieved by somehow multiply the falling speed for the caracter by 2. So the character falls with about 18 m/s^2 and any object with 9.81 m/s^2 on earthlike. There is something wrong with this ...
    I think what really was the problem is not the falling speed, but the jumping height. If a character jumps 1 m, it will fall longer. Whereas in real life a jump of 50 cm is already pretty high.
    Since now you will overtake a falling ship with just getting out, I prefer the more realisic "same acceleration" from before.

      Well that makes a lot of sense! I always feel like characters in games can jump incredibly high :P
      I also think that it'll be incredibly annoying falling faster than a ship I'm falling with - I wouldn't be able to do the trick I did to film the brick smashing into the ground after the physics update :(

      Other than frustrating me by spinning the block to try to attack with its largest surface - at least I think that's what it does :P

    I play with the graphics on almost as low as it gets. I didn't see that the update put the graphics UP. So when I tried to load up my world right after the update I thought the game had frozen. Decided not to play for a couple days, let the bugs work out.

      I hadn't intended to leave the update for a few days, but work got in the way so I only loaded up after a decent number of hotfixes had been released. I'm pretty lucky to have a high end PC so I haven't experienced it myself but it's sad to hear that more than a few people have been seeing significantly worse performance with this update :(

    Wheels work better but still unable to make an automated wheeled drone , and i am so happy now that auto rotate stays off i always hated having it on. Also you still having trouble with the space dock? Let me know if you need help with it also im getting a 10 core desktop tomorrow so that should make space egineers work better fps wise for me now.

      is it bugging out or is it the new tunnel 'echo' that they added. to me it makes you sound like your in a steel tunnel even when your under an overhang of rock. that definitely needs some adjusting, and it's so loud.

      I'd also like a reduction in the grunts from running into things - apparently I'm really clumsy as I'm hearing that sounds a lot :P

    why is every post processing effect on one button, wouldn't it make more sense to separate the post processing effects into multiple options so you can choose how your game looks.

      That's a very good question, they could leave the single button there for simplicity but add an extra 'advanced' section where you can tweak each setting. It would make it soo much better

    Does the Ansel work on multiplayer ?

      I believe it's supposed to, but there are some limits to what you can see if you use it on a server, supposedly. I haven't tested it out myself to see if you can exploit it

    o i have die a few time jump off a idk the landing u have on your base knowing u will take damage before the update with a full of cargo with this update you will die ate that high

      Well you see, I was making a ship with engines on rotors and for some reason the engines didn't work

      Was it using the vector thrust script? My ship in survival that's using it still works, or did yesterday but there might be something with the script...

      They aren't too bad, at least when I've been using them they've been fine. Though others have been having issues. I'm not sure if one or more mods are breaking a few things here and there at the moment because I've been getting lucky where others have been struggling :/

    I think you spoke too soon. As of today, auto-rotate still turns itself back on for me, within minutes if not seconds.

      I think they're planning for its release to coincide with half life 3 ;)
