Spearfishing Hawaii Aquarium Fish {Kole Catch Clean Cook}
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 бер 2020
- In this video we're spearfishing the aquarium fish known as kole, or yellow eyed tang using a three prong. This is footage from the same day as spearfishing valley of the kings but during that trip we speared a bunch of kole and did a catch clean and cook with Justin Lee. We tried to make this video as a response to a lot of the questions we received on our last three prong video. I hope you guys enjoy it and as always if you have any spearfishing questions at all put em in the comments and I’ll answer them all.

Eating Kole or any of the Surgeon fish family is actually very sustainable in comparison to most pelagic predators that we hunt as spearos as they feed off algae and are low down on the trophic levels on coral reefs, its a practise that should be adopted in more places other than Hawaii, that way the pressure from fishing is spread over a wide range of different species and not just a select few.
Chadd up
Strongly agree!!! 👏
Don't listen to those rude comments... I love these videos
haha I don't thanks for watching!
Justin & Ryan's uncle used to be a game warden. He told me that the really old style was to harvest smaller fish. The older Hawaiians believe that the larger older fish produce more baby fish. BTW he was taught that by people on Molokai. Makes sense to me 🤷♂️🤙. Shout out uncle Gil, man with the golden voice 🙏
Yup makes a lot of sense to take the smaller faster growing species. Uncle Gil is the man!
Stoked with the way this one turned out! Thanks for watching everyone 💛
Best one yet! You are becoming a pro editor. The people want to see you return to the other side of the camera!
I’ve watched over n over a bunch....it gets me so hungry to dive n cook🤙🏽🤙🏽👌🏽
Hi Sam
If they’re hiding in their holes you can wait just outside their holes and use the tip of the three prong and tap the rock “tap tap tap” and they’ll come right out and investigate.
that's awesome! Justin said he uses his float/anchor weight to tap on the bottom and then he dives down and shoots them. definitely trying this next time
Loved watching you break down Justin’s set up, pragmatic and efficient, even the way he puts the spoon on his belt. Enjoyable to see you selflessly take an under his wing approach, learning of the culture, style and preferences. Solid vid
Thanks! I love watching Justin hunt. More on the way!
Hahahaha I saw the spoon that is for scale the fish?
That’s the culture for us locals to learn when we are little
Stoked to get to experience it!
We eat them in Samoa too bro.. BEAUTIFUL...I prefer eating them raw..we call them POGE .. fantastic video by the way
damn that's hardcore! I can't even picture how you eat them raw. I'll have to come try it there. thanks for watching
Ryan , love seeing how you appreciate everything 🤙🏽
Ryan you are going to blow up. You produce VERY high quality content. Keep it up. I recently got into spearing and I'm working on getting comfortable in deeper water. If you are ever on oahu I'd love to meet up
Thanks Joe working super hard over here would love to meet in Oahu. Really hoping that’s one of my first trips after this craziness ends!
You should do more vids with Justin that guy is an artist diving and hunting.
He’s the best! Hopefully next videos he will be teaching me to hunt.
@@RyanMyersExpeditions man! You are so humble, you are among the best spearfishermen you are great!!! To see you hunt with justin makes it look so easy 😅😅
Yes my bro they also a delicacy here in Fiji Islands ..everytime we go reef diving we try to get as many as we could coz the taste is just so good..
If anything shooting small fish shows that you guys are doing it for the right reasons. most people are too focused on having a big trophy rather than a tasty lunch. Love the content btw. my new fav spearing channel.
Thanks Luke stoked you like it and really loving eating the small fish.
hands down best hawaii diving vids, great action and format cheeeee!
thanks man love diving here!
Kole is a delicacy in some islands of Vanuatu including mine.. It is one of my favorite reef fish too along with the coral trout.. So yummy..!!

hey great vid once again the tips an tricks are awesome like hearing bout info on gear ect. . just wondering what Justin's Snorkel . is it twin purge snorkel ? looks interesting
Wow your mentor Justin is one hella of a spearfishing Legend, how he does it is so incredible and unique and reminds me of how my brothers back in the islands does in the deep, So big respect to him and to u brothas for keep it coming. Watching outta Seattle👌🤙🤙
Dude is a monster. Thanks so much for the support!!!
very very interesting, awesome video.
i might see if I can get some of these off moorgumpin here in Australia
You deserve more than 6k subscribers bro, i feel like u make better content than those bigger youtubers, cause u describe what you do. Plus thanks for teaching me a lot, i got alot to learn now. But u made it much easier
Thanks man just getting started and growing like crazy! Keep practicing and one day you will make it look easy too!
U got this man, youre growing pretty crazy, because you make videos people wanna really see, just like when i watch some videos with good thumbnail, but to be honest they don't explain what they're doing, thank you!
This content is awesome! I wonder if there are any little fish like that to fry whole on the gulf coast of FL
Such an amazing video again man. I never started off shooting fish with anything since I had a bad aim, but we always picked up a few tako for parties, like 5 tako or 8 the most which can sometimes be over 100lbs. And maybe after a few years I was able to actually hit fish, pertaining to menpachi, squirrel fish, and other red nocturnal fish. Only after 12years of diving here in oahu hawaii, I ever targeted kole, maninis and other reef fish with a 3prong, as I never had the taste for them. But I do go out and take fish for those that live around me!
Mate you did an unbelievable job on this video! Really enjoyed it and have absolutely nothing against people hunting small fish like these so long as they're managing their fish stocks responsibly. Love watching Justin dive too, what an animal and moves so efficiently in the water. These vids are first rate!👍
Great explanation braddah! You said it and explained perfectly... local style!
Thanks man!!!
Justin’s weight system looks awesome! As always awesome video guys!
I love the videos with cooking skills!!!!
We eat them out here on Guam brother... Good fish👍👍👍👍👍
Amazing video! Wish i had the chance to be there and enjoy life like that.
Delicacy here in Fiji. We usually roast them on open fire and then soak them in seawater, lime and chillies mixture.
Bro in the Republic of Palau we make spear fishing trips just to catch this fish! it's a delicacy for most of the pacific islands I say keep up the good work
Truly bro! Keep it up bro💪🏻many people didn’t know what’s culture in every country’s. Keep it a good work bro😇nice video god blessed always
yessa love the vids cant wait for the ulua clean and cook
It’s going to be sweet just waiting to be released from lock down so we can smoke it up!
Hey ryan! Love your vids! just wondering, what pole spear are you using?
great video guys, we call that fish monget in our small town in the Philippines. We love to eat them fried, grilled and Tinola or fish soup
Man this video made me hungry for koles now. Cant wait till this covid thing is over. The little things we take for granted
Loving your channel man. If you ever get to Maui let me know! Would be fun to hang.

Can't wait for the next one! They are coming out fast
Thanks hopefully tomorrow another one!
What up with your hair buh
Loving these vids Ryan, keep it up and this channel will do really well!
Albert Sopher chadd up
Don't listen to those negative people., they don't know about the culture. We were raised where this is a lifestyle and not a "sport". They are speaking based off their bringing, which doesn't apply to us. Keep doing what you do.
Thanks Jake totally agree!
Watching this makes me like go out and get me some kole 😂 awesome video braddah keep it up ! 👍🏻
Thanks man same here ready for more!
all your videos are great!!!
Hi bro, awesome vid 👋😊 just curious what snorkel Justin is using, seems it has 2 valves
Big shout oit from the cayman islands keep up the great content bro✌🏻
Thanks man!!!
Great Video Ryan and Sam
Woot. Real-time notifications. Take that Summer!
woah
Lol I’ll let you know next time too. Hopefully tomorrow!
Awesome video mate! Love your perspective on the importance of respecting other cultural methods of collecting different species of fish. After all, spearfishing isn't just about getting that big trophy fish! Cheers
Thanks Wayne! Best part of traveling is getting to experience new cultures!
Kole is da best!! Fry um up crispy! Yummm
Without a doubt one of my new favorite fish. Definitely can’t underestimate how crispy they need to be though. Makes me want to go home and try this on some tiny Florida fish.
Kole were reserved for Hawaiian royalty in the old times. Very much a prized fish here in the islands
I can see why! they're so good
Monster Kole’s!! Yessah braddah, good stuff!!
Thanks Kevin!!!
You guys gatta try king kole it's the best my fav fo sho
Watching from Philippines 🇵🇭
What's up Ryan, I love watching your vids!! It's super educational and helps me better my own technique. Keep it up brother.
P.S. Justin is the man🤣🤣
Thanks Derek! Ya I agree he is the man.
On the real though you're an amazing spear fisherman. I admire the way you carry yourself and how you travel the world adapting to different cultures. The way you connect with the locals wherever you are....Amazing bro keep up the good work!!
Loving the content bro!!
another 16:59mins not wasted 1,423mins left! for the day
You have to try the yellow tang ceviche style or poké style its very delicious
I miss the koles in hawaii. Here in palau we have a different species but still good. But smaller
That fish is 1 of the best in the cook islands love eating it good fish to teach kids to spearfishing manini is 1 t0
And oh probably those who were bashing you were probably just haters, because your so good at this making video about spearfishing and stuffs they are just jealous bro they don't even know what's legal and illegal : )
Very true thanks!
@@RyanMyersExpeditions welcome man no problem bro your the best spearo out there other than AJ!
That's a great and delicious fish to fry. Also we cook it called KELAGUEN, which is prepared first scale and remove intestines and dont forget to remove the blades at the tail. Then chop them into a bit size including the head. Ingredients are yellow onions, garlic, little salt, very little soy sauce (kikuman) and most importantly the hot peppers, mix them around. BON APPETIT...😋👍
Thats sooo delecios fish bro .. Great for frying crispy..
Videos are awesome man !
Thanks so much glad you appreciate them!!!
Can we get a video explaining all of Justin's float and belt gear set up, please???
This video was rad just started watching your videos they are awesome 🤙
Thanks man new one coming out in a few minutes hope you enjoy!
Awesome
Ryan Myers nice shots, I did enjoy the vids
Wow those bring back so much memories!!! Please hunt Aweo’weo and menpachi. Catch and cook and compare the taste between kole and those . TIA
For sure! Those were my "starter" fish, when I first started three-pronging... Aweo'weo are still my favorite!
Sounds great I think that’s an awesome video idea. Never eaten an Aweo weo either but I keep hearing they are everyone’s favorite.
Will try to get some next trip for sure.
very interesting, the weapon you use seems fun and very simple to use, just for that type of fishing of course, I would like to know more about it, in Spain they are not known, it seems a very tasty type of "surgeon fish" to eat? spearfishing there is only for sport or can it be professional? greetings from Fuerteventura
Small reef fish are really taste
And there are alot and I mean alot of them
I hunt them with my friends in Zanzibar
Nice ya there are lots of them and they are great eating! Going to start eating them more often.
Ryan, did you know that the Kole anciently was a KAPU (forbidden) fish meaning only the Ali’i (KingsQueen and high chiefs) could eat them. The MOI or pacific thread fin fish is another KAPU fish. Both of these fishes are so delicious
We called them doctor fish in carriacou 🇬🇩 the older people love it 😊
Love the videos♥️♥️♥️♥️
Where did Justin get the dive weight that can clip into the belt? Is that something he made or someone that one could buy? Also, how does the tag line connect to the weight?
Each video gets better and better. You got this shit down now. Great job Ryan. Let me know next time you come back to Florida I'll load you up with gloves.
Kole..is also known as Doctor fish here in Jamaica an the Caribbean..its a part of the surgeon fish family.
For better grip on the three prong put electric tape on the area u usually hold helps alot
Great eating, delicacy here in the Marianas too. 👍🏼
Sweet that’s awesome these have quickly become my favorite fish!
Ryan i see that you dive in Florida as well. What is the difference between diving in Florida and the Bahamas and diving in Hawaii?
Thanks for creating this. Is there an equivalent caribbean species we can do this with?
Love your content bro
thanks so much!
Don't let those comments discourage you. They don't understand the culture and its not sport its providing food for families and others / Farming and having fun doing it.
KOLE IS MY FAVORITE FISH.
Hello. I’m curious if you could make a video for beginner freedivers/spear fishermen and women. Like what you should do, or precautions you should take to get into the sport and the lifestyle/equipment stuff/ general basic knowledge, or do’s/do nots. Aloha.
Feel sooooo hungry bro - great vid :)))
I like the local/cultural approach to hunting. And as a Florida spearo I appreciate the Parrotfish comparison. Totally heckin illegal here! Although they are starting to overrun the shoredives and get huge, that might change soon.
Great vid
Thanks!
one of the best fish to eat on the reefs
King kole brah!! So yummy!!!
I'm sure there are other species of goldring surgeon fish which I bet are really good eating too. Kole ( ctenochaetus strigosus) are endemic to Hawaii. So ain't nothing like the kole they are in there own deliciousness!!
Huh interesting I didn’t know that. Great info I’ll enjoy them just a little bit more now.
@@RyanMyersExpeditions just wanted to share it is a big part of our life here. I enjoy watching your videos, you do a really good job with your voice over and commenting through out the video. Breaking down what your doing and thinking while diving I think only strengthens your content. One can learn many good tricks and habits as well as proper etiquette and respect. Awesome you got Justin in there he knows Big Island through and through and is one the best hunters in and out the water. Mahalo nui for sharing your experiences and unbelievable dive footage. Keep up the good work can't to see the next vid. 🤙🏾🤙🏾🐟🐟🐙🐙🍽️
Hey man, I've been slowly getting into three prong on the west side of big island. I was wondering if youre ever concerned about ciguatera with kole nd weke?
I haven’t been but don’t really know much about it in kole.
@@RyanMyersExpeditions kona is the west side of the big island
Heck yah! Man! Those are some huge kole! I can tell that they are some fat kole! And yes fry them up and eat the tail first😂 my favorite part will be the head belly and tail! Can’t wait for more spear fishing video🙌🏻✌🏼
Thanks man they were delicious actually shot one a few days later with the spear gun and ate it they were so good!
Ryan Myers one of my favorite way to eat them is sashimi, just clean them take off the fins and slice them then soak them with soy sauce, lime or lemme some some local hat pepper! Yum! Bro! If you wonder where I’m from? I’m from Republic of Palau! And we fish everyday. Cheers can’t wait for more videos
What type or brand of snorkel is Justin Using
from queensland australia we have no problems taking surgeon when nothing else is around on shoredives
I'm from Queensland and i never see people shooting surgeon fish there horrible to eat rather just get a briem if I'm that despite
Aloha! Do you know what detachable weight he uses to tie off his float line to?
I do not but I need one too!
Is there a bag limit for kole
Don't listen to the internet haters bro- no need to explain yourself. Your welcome to hunt and gather all the the food you need. Much better than buying it at supermarkets! Your in a Great place to be quarantined though! Nice work on the youtube channel man- keep it up! -Paul
Here we make a soup out of them we call it fish tea
Ahh sweet gotta try that.
