Very interesting video, thanks for doing it. I have been toying with the idea of trying out Resolve for some time now but kept thinking what would I gain over FCP. Hi, I'm very late for this comment, but I'm hoping you'll still find my reply. 😅 Have you stuck with FCP? I've been editing in FCP, albeit inconsistently, for about 6 or 7 years now. Right now, I'm once again at a point where I haven't really edited a video in half a year, and my friend has been trying to convince me to move to Resolve, but every time I try Resolve, it just completely confuses me because it's SO different from FCP. I'm just curious to hear your opinion on this. Maybe the right tutorial (i.e. the right approach to teaching Resolve) will win me over, but at the moment I'm leaning towards staying with FCP because it's what I know and what works for me. 🤔
Man oh man. I’m a premiere Pro user and have been on the fence about jumping on FCPX or Resolve for a while now… I think you have me convinced to try out FCP already
Premiere Pro user here 🙋♂️. I changed to FCPX for budget reasons a couple of months ago and I still hate it. If you come from other Adobe Apps, Premiere is just more intuitive. In FCPX nothing is where I expect it to be, and the magnetic timeline never moves where I want it to move, so I end up wasting more time. Also, there are more free resources and plugins for Premiere Pro than for FCPX. If you want to edit a bunch of small videos I think Premiere Pro is the fastest way, because in FCPX you have to be VERY careful with your settings or it will literally eat all of your hard drive with cache and optimized media. That being said, in an M1 Mac Mini, FCPX is crazy fast; so I think it's better for longer videos where you can take your time to set everything once and then work on your edit. For a little context, I learned to edit like 10 years ago in FCP, but by now I've editing for longer in Premiere Pro. Hope this helps.
I’ve just started editing in FCPX. Coming from Premier Pro. I think I’ll end up using both; FCPX for solo edits and quick work and Premiere Pro for collabs or work that needs more layers. I’d have to disagree with Foto Pirate on just about every point he made. Final cut is WAY more intuitive and the magnetic timeline is easy to get used to (also it can be turned off). Yes you should take the time to set it up right so that it doesn’t make copies of your work. In my experience Premiere is so fkn laggy most of the time. And the workspaces are unnecessarily complicated. I love how the workspace in FCPX is dynamic and changes depending on what you select. Also: one time payment for a perpetual license!
I switched from Premiere to Resolve when I bought a Blackmagic camera and the full version was included. I tried it out of curiosity thinking I'd never fully give up Premiere. It almost immediately took over as my number one. Love everything about it.
@@FotoPirata Respectfully totally disagree, you've stepped into FCPX hoping or thinking it's PP - it's not, it's different, but if you take time to as Jesse says in the video "surrender" into the software you're using then it starts to become intuitive and makes scenes. I use FCPX mostly and my team use PP and Resolve, they are all unique and must be treated as individual systems - not labelling them as one, but "one is better than the other" - they all do different things. FCPX is by far the fastest with a competent user on each... we have tested it rigorously and the rules are always the same. FCPX fastest, PP best for a hybrid with AE and Resolve is just the number one beast for complex films and colour grading endless information and outputs
I'm simply just impressed with your quality and skill level. The real deal! This UA-cam video is better than some documentaries on Netflix. Keep it up.
So I need someone to help me understand this. Shouldn’t switching from FCP be fairly intuitive since DR has a “cut” page that offers a magnetic timeline similar to FCP?
@@papermelon The cut page in resolve allows you to build individual sequences pretty quickly, and rearrange the shots, but for detailed editing you have to switch pages. In final cut the magnetic timeline speeds up everything. This means I can do J and L cuts with my audio nearly instantly, or rearrange huge sections of my video really quickly. Its surprisingly often that I'll take an entire sequence from later in my video and decide it would make more sense earlier on, so I can just grab that whole thing and slot it into my video anywhere I want without disrupting anything.
My recordings look better when i import and view them in Resolve 17 than when I view them with Quicktime Player or iMovie (They look the same in imovie and quicktime but better in Resolve 17). How is that even possible ?
So Jesse. It's a year later... have you touched it at all or did you give up on it? I'm only asking because I watched this video a year ago and now with Davinci Resolve coming to the iPad, I'm wondering if it might be time to make the switch myself after 10+ years of using FCP. Updates to FCPX have been rather minimal and slow lately and I would have thought Apple would have ported it to iPadOS by now. Thoughts ?
@@JesseDriftwood Ah you might be right. If one is going to shoot in log who would not use 10bit 422? If I recall now it was the 10bit issue. You are a well informed person. On a side note I’ve edited on Ampex 2” tape, Sony 9000, Edit-Droid, Avid, Premiere and you’ll have to take FCP out of my cold dead fingers.
@@CallMeChato I ended up switching back to final cut also, I’m just so much more comfortable editing in it. As for 8bit log well you’re right it’s not ideal! But it mostly depends on which log profile you use and how much grading you plan on doing.

Hey Jessie, just found your channel from Peter Mckinnon and this video about Davinci Resolve!! I have been "stuck" in imovie, or maybe it's more of a comfort with the ease of use...but I have been trying to make the switch to Davinci Resolve, wanting to add more to my videos but I get frustrated with the learning curve! Why do I keep losing my files? lol!! The red screen thing, lol! I hope to figure it out some day just need to make the commitment to learn it! And yes Casey Faris is a huge help with his UA-cam channel! Love your work from what I have watched so far, Thanks!
Casey Farris the bomb and my original introduction to Resolve. Another great channel is Creative Video Tips. He's an amazing Davinci teacher. Certainly the two best instructors I've come across. Also I'll never buy a Mac so FCP is a non-starter for me.
When I used FCPX it was like I already knew how to use the program naturally but than I had to switch to Windows where it was difficult to edit videos coming from FCPX in which I found Filmora that was a bit similar and easier to use but wasn't advanced or outputs clear quality or smooth 60fps so now I am planning to use MacBook solely for FCPX and other work on Windows.
Oh man the Fairlight page did my head in! Thats going to take me a good while to get used to, but excited to be able to pass off projects to get mixed for me someday :)
Very helpful video as I’m just getting started! I think I’ll stick with FCP since you answered my question : what’s best for a solo video producer who just wants to crank out a decent video for UA-cam. Thanks!
MAN! Insane intro! Superb edit skills you got!! I've been doing my vlogs on vegas pro... mainly because was the software I learned a few years back. but it crashes soo much that the workflow is slow... I'm been trying out fcpx on the new m1pro mac and dammm it's soo smooth! but still not sure I will adopt it as my future video editor or if I should give it a try to Davinci or Premiere... So many ways to make a cake and yet still to find out the perfect oven!
I'm in the exact situation you're in. Very quick in FCPX, but I bought a BMPCC 6kPro so it came with the premium version of Davinci and so I tried to make the switch with the help of Casey as well as Alex Jordan of FilmSimplified and my flow is WAY slower right now and the frustration level is grueling. I'm having to constantly look up things in the middle of edits, but I think in about a month or so if I stick with Davinci, I'll be better off in the long run. Just doesn't feel like it yet. Thanks for the video - it's nice to see that others are dealing with the same challenges.
I ended up switching back a few videos later haha. I'm still kind of using both for projects but I can't give up just how much faster I am in final cut.
How does it feel one month after you posted this comment? I just started the journey and man, it's hard.. and now I've seen that even @jesseDriftwood has switched back !
@@Superjeanmarc I feel your pain... My editing projects slowed down over the past month due to some home remodeling we had to get done. Before the break, I did 3 short commercials with Davinci and am getting faster, but most of those were basic cuts and didn't have any intensive transitions, etc. but super helpful once I do look up how to do things in there. I am realizing that it's going to take working in it for a few more months to get quicker. I do like a lot of the time saving tools they have that are a lot more intuitive over FCPX but the learning curve is steep!
HA !!!! I'm only 2:45 seconds in and I thought the same thing. I keep a tab open with nothing but Casey's channel up for reference! I'm coming from Premiere Pro and it was the 1001st time it crashed that I decided to try and switch. That was a 2 weeks ago and I feel like I'm trying to drink from a fire hose on full blast. I can see vague visions of how smooth it's going to be when I finally know it, specifically for Fusion. But for now.... let's just say, I'm not losing my hair, I'm just pulling it out. Keep up the great work!
Your work is very good, I think just how good many creatives are gets overlooked and taken for granted given how much content is out there and the level of production quality that has evolved with both the accessibility to fantastic tools and the skill and ability that developes over time as talented people practice and develope their craft.
@@JesseDriftwood you have a refreshingly honest perspective that requires a measure of risk to put out there, due to the inherent vulnerability you expose, that I will guarantee you, is far more appreciated by your audience than many might be comfortable admitting or identifying. I am genuinely excited and happy to see you doing well, and will say my interest in your resolve journey is peeked, I will admit, while I am a deep diver into Photoshop for developing still images my early video edits were made with windows movie maker. I really really love the work that so many of you guys do with video and look forward to where your carear takes you. Thank you for sharing!
I did about the same thing, FCPX for the last 10 years and the last 2 years Davinci bc I was tired of going from FCPX to Davinci for better color grading control. Then just went with Davinci, but miss many plug ins from FCPX. Davinci is now a fully editing beast less the plugins..
Agreed. I can teach an intern how to use FCPX in a day and they are off and running. Of course, not expert but good enough to get a draft done. BTW, you can edit in FCPX, export XML, and then bring that into Resolve for finishing and coloring if you want.
Yup! The only issue with that workflow is that I’ve had some issues with that process when the timeline starts getting more complicated with compound clips and adjustment layers. Maybe it’s better now though!
I’m a one man band so to speak. FCP has literally everything I’ve needed. Came from Vegas yeeeears ago and fcp took some time to get used to with the storyboard layout over a timeline. Now I prefer the storyboard. Gave davinci a solid try and I couldn’t wrap my head around the program. You said 3 weeks 😂 yeah I’m not a full time Tuber or post production editor, I’m sticking with fcp
@@JesseDriftwood Damn... you switched back... Would be super interesting to make video about how to send an edit from FCPX to Resolve for color as FCPX has weird XML exports or to a Sound Mix (as FCPX lacks OMF exports).. Thanks for your channel, really amazing
Really wish Apple would overhaul FCP and add proper RAW support, more robust color support like resolve has, fix all the little annoyances (like lack of key-framing easing on Z-axis with default scaling tool). We finally got built-in tracker after how many years? Why is it taking so long? And now Apple is adding integrated ProRes hardware into their consumer chips. Makes total sense to overhaul and bring FCP up-to-par with better more robust feature set.
Like all software there's a learning curve. If you have used something for years it becomes second nature and we are all resistant to change. Final cut is basic when compared to Davinci Resolve , but that's just it. Creativity is not limited in Resolve the constant upgrades and new features is what makes it great and seemingly more complex when first encountered. Remember it's free with upgrades forever or you buy the amazing studio version it's a one off buy and upgrades forever. At the moment I did the latest deal where you get the speed editor panel for free with studio (the speed editor panel is pro kit that speeds up the editing workflow) it alone normally costs the same price as the software. When it comes to cars if you were offered the fully loaded option for the price of the basic would you turn it down because you haven't used heated seats, cruise control, climate zone control etc. I think this is a similar case both will get you from A to B but it's a different ride.
Same! I got tired of the adobe software bugging out and crashing on me. I still need to use after effects regurlarly, soo I'm trying to figure out how to make that work smoothly.
Been slowly transitioning to DaVinci for collaborative work, but those small habits in using FCPx make it harder when you have to think where the tools are as opposed to just cutting and colouring. I feel your frustration...also that chair looks more comfortable than mine!
Those mannequins in the background are making me uncomfortable. I tried to love Resolve 17 but FCPX has been embedded into my workflow habits. Or maybe I'm just getting old and can't keep up with changes in tech anymore?
I started editing in FCP7 and i had to make the switch to premiere for a job.... it was painful...... iY stayed with it for 10+years....now im making the switch to Resolve..... it's painful.
Nice video. If you like the magnetic timeline try the cut page in Resolve - It's very similar but adds features that many FCPX users crave in the magnetic timeline (link any clip to any other clip etc.).
Resolve is fantastic but I’ve never used anything else. It’s hard to learn at first but well worth it. Yes Casey is very knowledgeable and easy to follow. I’d also recommend Jamie Fenn and Mr. Alec Tech.
Ive started learning on adobe pr and ps now on to Ae. I cant see me switching. But im only 7 months in on youtube now. But i get inspired by all techniques.. big ups.. love ya vlogs... ✊🏾
I've done a little bit of it in a few videos, but nothing too in depth. I'll consider some more in the future, I just find editing the videos very tedious.
@@JesseDriftwood premiere! spent way too many years in it. I've spent the last year in resolve and I'm just as fast if not faster in resolve. The stability especially with m1 is just insane. And the color tools are way better than lumetri, all of my coloring got better after switching haha
I love it so much. Its from Fully. I've been using it for over 2 years and couldn't imagine using anything else. I'm really fidgety so this chair lets me sit in so many different ways throughout the day.
@@JesseDriftwood Cool, I noticed the fidgety parts in the video. I'd be interested in seeing all the physical workflow items (chair, desk, special keyboard/mouse if any, any ergonomic items that have really improved your life etc. ) you use, and what you do and don't like about them, then maybe future things you would change for improvements? One for the idea's board anyhow, and keep up the great work!
6:47 Someone, please explain the magnetic timeline for me. I had to edit someone’s project in FCPX once and coming from Premiere that little element mad it hell.
I use both and I have to say that speed ramping in fcpx is on another level. This being the case I have to agree with you, quick edits are way better in fcpx especially if your ramp heavy. Of course if I’m being paid for a more “pro” project I’ll switch. Although I will say I still sometimes speed ramp in fcp and bring it over to d17

Go the other way brother. Resolve is more capable software. Also it's pro software and is free.
I switched to Resolve at version 16. Best decision I've ever made as an editor.
Good stuff....and I still don't know if I'm going to make the switch 😂.
Could you drop the link of video tutorials from where you learnt?
" that confort is too valuble to give up " man he sumed so much about life with these words
Just found this video and holy crap u r good at making videos. Subscribed immediately
I'm simply just impressed with your quality and skill level. The real deal! This UA-cam video is better than some documentaries on Netflix. Keep it up.
Thanks dude!
Thinking about switching to Final Cut. Resolve has a way of making the simple edits hard.. how quick can one pick up on Final Cut?
the intro was so cinematic and damn the quality.
The reveal on the Storyblocks section was so good!
So I need someone to help me understand this. Shouldn’t switching from FCP be fairly intuitive since DR has a “cut” page that offers a magnetic timeline similar to FCP?
The cut page is still *extremely* different than editing in final cut.
@@JesseDriftwood what’s the biggest difference, if you had to sum up?
@@papermelon The cut page in resolve allows you to build individual sequences pretty quickly, and rearrange the shots, but for detailed editing you have to switch pages.
In final cut the magnetic timeline speeds up everything. This means I can do J and L cuts with my audio nearly instantly, or rearrange huge sections of my video really quickly. Its surprisingly often that I'll take an entire sequence from later in my video and decide it would make more sense earlier on, so I can just grab that whole thing and slot it into my video anywhere I want without disrupting anything.
@@JesseDriftwood gotcha, makes sense. Thank you for the help!
I don’t know if this video was edited in Resolve but your colors look better than ever.
Yes it was!
Thoughts ?
I'm still in Final Cut, Dave is still in resolve.
I just can't give up how efficient I am in Final Cut currently.
What was that fidget thing you were playing with?
I love this mix of professionalism being mixed with bits of silliness like at 5:40
Tried the free version of resolve but it doesn’t work with v-log so it’s paid vs paid.
It doesn’t work with v-log? What doesn’t work exactly?
@@JesseDriftwood It won’t load the files. Only the paid version accepts it unless recent updates have changed that.
@@CallMeChato My guess is that it has nothing to do with v-log. Maybe there is a limitation with footage being 10bit though.
But it mostly depends on which log profile you use and how much grading you plan on doing.
hi. Which program is better for sound design in video editing process?
*QUESTION LOL* how do u get a tutor like that, BTW I made the decision to give up on capcut and I was thinking the same thing u thought about fcp. Do u recommend resolve over fcp to some1 that only knows tablet editing?
Haha well in this case I’ve just known Dave for a very long time so I got lucky!
I ended up switching back to final cut just because I’m so much faster at it, but Dave is still using resolve and has edited a couple videos for this channel there. So we use both!
@@JesseDriftwood I pay attention to videos, I saw that, makes sense, I guess I'm gona have to learn resolve because I'm not a Mac guy, but when I do I'm gona be doing some sick stuff, it's kinda funny u talked about fcp limitations and how u know ways around it, I get that, I pushed capcut to far, anyways thanks for responding, u didnt have to, I do see now that u have a insane amount of subs. But that makes u 1 of a kind I guess brother
Why colors so cool and soft here? Because of 10bit or because of pro grading? Maybe both of them
Hey Jessie, just found your channel from Peter Mckinnon and this video about Davinci Resolve!!
Why make the switch? Enjoy both... 😊
Wow... Only 24 seconds in and I am compelled to comment. What an intro! Jesse you rock!
Casey Farris the bomb and my original introduction to Resolve. Another great channel is Creative Video Tips. He's an amazing Davinci teacher. Certainly the two best instructors I've come across. Also I'll never buy a Mac so FCP is a non-starter for me.
I switched to Davinci Resolve in 2019... and never touched any editing software ever since... and yeah I've learned a lot from Casey Faris too...lol
Sticking with FCP here, I edit mostly educational videos with on screen text, and the ease of doing those just can't be beat at this time.
Got a lot of love for Casey's videos. Great stuff
That was very helpful: thanks! With warm wishes from Cape Town.
Same here. FCPX for 10 years. Now LOVE resolve - it's the one stop shop for advanced edits. Still use FCPX for quickies
This is top. Will you reveal how you did the timelapse photos with moving camera? :)
Look it up, there's hundreds tutorial vids. Moving timelapse is called "hyperlapse"
I've been asking myself this question for quite some time. Thank you for answering it!
*Bro! I watched the intro slide or shot like five times! That was buttery smooth* . 🤙🏼
Your videos are such a treat.
If you're seriously into sound, mixing, automating audio in your videos, nothing is better than Resolve.
Oh man the Fairlight page did my head in! Thats going to take me a good while to get used to, but excited to be able to pass off projects to get mixed for me someday :)
You showed a lot of resolve in learning this new software
Very helpful video as I’m just getting started! I think I’ll stick with FCP since you answered my question : what’s best for a solo video producer who just wants to crank out a decent video for
UA-cam. Thanks!
I’ve been super curious about why you did this switch since seeing your comments on Twitter. Cool seeing your thoughts behind it.
I’m going to do at least another full UA-cam videos in resolve to see how I like it, but for quick edits I’ll still reach for final cut.
How’s the transition going? (That sounds loaded out of context)
I switched back to final cut. I couldn’t do it.
@@JesseDriftwood thanks for the update. Got an iMac coming and weighing davinci vs fcp. Have a awesome day
I'm in the exact situation you're in.
@@JesseDriftwood Do you ever XML the fcpx edit to Resolve to color and then send back?
@@spiderstudiosohio I have the same question
Oh thank you! I really appreciate that :)
@@JesseDriftwood It's not better... The XML workflow is a total mess, really... Unusable professionally
I ended up switching back actually. I’m just so much faster in final cut.
I completely agree! I think it is coming but I’m worried they’re going to to switch to a subscription model when they do.
I personally love resolve for what it is and it's so much simpler to me than Adobe premiere pro it's just way more easy to use in my opinion
I tried to learn fcp after Vegas, but now I have to give up (due to frustration) and move on to Davinci
I just recently switch from Premier to Final Cut and I am not going back haha
Welcome to the club!
I don’t blame you!
Same! I got tired of the adobe software bugging out and crashing on me. I still need to use after effects regurlarly, soo I'm trying to figure out how to make that work smoothly.
Your intro is legendary.
Did you ever figure out a way to match position and zoom keyframe ease with how you use them in Final Cut?
JESSEE !!! Please ! Make the switch ! Idc how many veterans are out there making tutorials on davinci , I would like to learn from you
Been slowly transitioning to DaVinci for collaborative work, but those small habits in using FCPx make it harder when you have to think where the tools are as opposed to just cutting and colouring. I feel your frustration...also that chair looks more comfortable than mine!
I’m obsessed with this chair!
Those mannequins in the background are making me uncomfortable. I tried to love Resolve 17 but FCPX has been embedded into my workflow habits. Or maybe I'm just getting old and can't keep up with changes in tech anymore?
Smoooth introoo 😍😍👌🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥
color grading on resolve is just another realm.. so much control over each of the hues..
Alec Tech.
Is there a way to strech transitions like in premiere where we can press shift and strech it from one side…
Thanks for sharing your insights, Jesse! Would you be able to share your friend's filing system for projects? Keep up the good work!
Ive started learning on adobe pr and ps now on to Ae. I cant see me switching. But im only 7 months in on youtube now. But i get inspired by all techniques.. big ups.. love ya vlogs... ✊🏾
6:52 Dude you should teach FCP on your channel. I FINALLY learned how to PROPERLY do j cut at this time stamp and you weren't even talking about it.
I've done a little bit of it in a few videos, but nothing too in depth. I'll consider some more in the future, I just find editing the videos very tedious.
That Gimbal drop dropped my heart.
switching to resolve was the best move I made for my editing workflow
What did you switch from??
@@JesseDriftwood premiere! spent way too many years in it. I've spent the last year in resolve and I'm just as fast if not faster in resolve. The stability especially with m1 is just insane. And the color tools are way better than lumetri, all of my coloring got better after switching haha
Wish you'd showed the 'fast' way of editing in FCP so we could see how it compares to something like Resolve's Cut page
J and L cuts is a big one honestly.
@@JesseDriftwood Tbh that's something I'd do on the edit page, just Option select the video cut point and roll it up or down
Yeah I get that, but it’s 15x faster in final cut than it is on the edit page in resolve, unless there is a faster way that I haven’t seen yet.
I like that he picks up the gimbal at the end of the video :D
Your infinity cube at 6:27 really caught my eye and I odered one as a gift. Some product placement :)))
Haha I love mine so much!
Casey does make the best tutorials
All I need to know is what chair is that cross thing, and do you like it?
What is the finger pad you are using to edit with? Would it work with photoshop aswell?
6:47 Someone, please explain the magnetic timeline for me. I had to edit someone’s project in FCPX once and coming from Premiere that little element mad it hell.
You can "disable" it if you really find it hard to adjust. Just press P then select the clip you want to move.
@@SunnyNatividad 😲thanks!!!
@@GBlaque You're welcome! :)
Yeah the speed ramp is just hard to use on resolve😑
Does anyone know where i can find that monitor stand at 4:40?
This was just some generic vesa mount stand I found on Amazon.
I have never used anything but resolve. I love it, and every day i learn lots of new tricks. and yes Casey Faris is a great channel to learn about the fusion tab.
