I love your channel. My sister took me to a local quilt show and I was so inspired that I have now begun to learn how to quilt. At 56 years of age I bought a sewing machine. I have decided to start small and am making a cover for a large cushion. I am so excited to free motion quilt I forgot to put on the backing material!!Oh well I will learn from my mistakes. Thanks for sharing.
I just found your channel and enjoying going thru your videos. So nice to see young women that love to sew. I'm 50 and have been sewing/knitting/crocheting since I was a young child taught by my mother who is now 92. I sure wish we had UA-cam when I was younger struggling thru learning something with only written directions! Thank goodness I had my Mother to help. You do a wonderful job with your tutorials. Have a nice weekend! --Anne
I love it! Thank you! I really learned a lot. I am learning/making a quilt with leftover material from masks we made during the beginning of the pandemic with a resident in a nursing home. We are enjoying it very much! This was very helpful.
I can’t tell you have many videos I have watched. Tons and tons. Your videos are simply the best. Your timing is impeccable! You teach, reassure, and do it all again. Than you so much. You are an excellent teacher. I have made one quilt. I am working on a second and planning to make a quilt for my friend for her birthday using Mickey Mouse materials. Tackling a design seems nuts for a newbie, but I believe I can with your videos. Blocks and rectangles are simple enough and you have taught me to add a half an inch to the block before cutting half square triangles. I will send you a photo when I get it done. Course the hard part is to work at the one I am doing now. SMILE. but that allows my brain to design the next.
Melanie, thank you for all the encouragement! In the first video you asked us to tell you what we love about quilting and since I just watched it I missed the "give away" but still wanted to post why I love quilting. There is a joy that comes from seeing the fabrics and imagining what "will be" once it's finished. Beautiful colors make my heart smile. You are helping me to feel confident and since I am a beginner, that is motivating and inspires me to be brave and not fearful.
Melanie I enjoy your tutorials. This video inspired me to machine quilt my quilts and now I'm really hooked on quilting. I'm making baby quilts and quilts for my nieces for Christmas. Keep your videos coming.
Free motion quilting is sooooo intimidated and scary…. thank you for this video…. looking forward in doing free motion on my next quilt 😬😊 …. quilting beginner 😇😁
Hi Melanie a few months ago I put in an order for a Viking Husqvarna machine. The shop got it wrong and to make up for it they supplied a new Necchi 100 pro machine which was more expensive and they said a better machine. It turns out that the feed dogs don't drop on this machine although they do supply a darning plate which covers the feed dogs. You video is so inspiring that I will try again to make FM quilting work. I didn't realise that even the simplest design can look really good. You are so much fun to watch I will be disappointed when this series is over. Still I'm sure you will be doing more and more so I will stayed tuned. Thank you from the UK.
Wow... I am absolutely in love with this quilt! It's just beautiful, great job! I've made 4 quilts so far, learning new things each time and this week I will be free motion quilting for the first time. I can only hope it's as nice as this 😂
I am new to quilting. I decided to give this a try because I had just recieved a rather basic sewing machine from my employer as a gift for working there for twenty years. Not knowing what I would like to make, I started looking up tutorials on quilting for beginners and I really have learned a lot. I have started with baby quilts to practice on and plan on donating them to a Christmas drive this year, that way the ones that I think are not so nice, well no one will know who made them, and they will be put to good use. Thanks for your videos, some great tips for people like me who want to learn
Such great information! I really appreciate your teaching style and how you discuss the possible pitfalls and how to navigate them. I'm glad to see you like your Juki--that's the one I hope to buy in a few months.
My goodness, I don't even sew, and I feel like I could make a free motion quilt after watching this series! You've covered all the basics, and then some. Tips and tricks, what to watch out for, etc. I love the phrases too - sewing in the "ditch". And the tip to draw the pattern out first on paper to get some muscle memory of where to take the needle next was great too. Excellent series. You rock. ☺️
AMAZING THIS IS THE BEST TUTORIAL EVERRRRRRRRR YOU EXPLAINED THINGS IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS AND I ALWAYS BEEN SCARED ABOUT DOING THE LAST PART FREE MOTION I THINK I FEEL LIKE I CAN DO IT NOW YOU MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY THANK U THANK U IM SO HAPY I CLICKED YOUR VIDEOS AND I SUBSCRIBED ❤️❤️❤️💗💗💗❤️❤️❤️
Hi, have just started quilting, quite daunting really. I stumbled across your UA-cam videos and really love the easy, simple way you explain techniques. The first video I watched was the binding one. I can bind with the best of them now thanks to you.
Wow you just made FMQ a lot less intimidating! I have really enjoyed all your videos. The best thing is that I have them to refresh my memory whenever I need to. You have given this newbie so much confidence and I am so excited to move forward with my sewing/quilting. Blessings, Pamela
Hey Melanie! I have tried and succeeded with several craft projects from watching your tutorials. I've never used a sewing machine before but I think I'm going to invest in one and try my hand at quilting. You explain the process so well that I feel less intimidated by a big project like this! Looking forward to making some comfy quilts for winter in Chicago 😄
Thank you that was double for me that part of quilt scare me I used to saw in the between square to be safe but now with your help I feel more confident to do different patterns. Love it!
Your quilting is fabulous!, as a self taught fmq I can always find something new or a tip to try!!! I love how you explained dividing your quilt before quilting your design. Just a note to add...I learned from experience that if you change your tension to fmq...make sure you write down or mark your regular tension setting. 😀
I'm loving this series and I'm REALLY REALLY wanting to make a quilt for my daughter now! Thank so you so much for all your hard work on making this series for us! You're awesome! xoxo
I am really so greatful to finally watch the videos Melanie......i've been dreaming to make my own quilts when i was still young. I really love beatiful quilts. And I hope to start soon. Thank you so much for yout videos🌷
I also use Aurifil thread 50 wt for piecing and 40 wt and 28 wt for machine quilting. I like the look of the heavier weight with a stitch length of 3. Thanks for your wonderful instructions.
I am so inspired with watching your quilting series! I would love to learn free motion quilting and you have explained it wonderfully. I love your choice of purple aurifil thread and bright colored fabrics. I am looking into getting a juki sewing machine like yours where I can work more comfortably on learning free motion quilting. Keep up your wonderful inspirational work and I look forward to seeing more quilting tutorials! Ps: I love how you can free motion stitch your name :)
thank you for the explanation it was very helpful, i am starting to do quilting. I normally would let the professionals do it, but now i have more confidence to start doing it myself!
Love your tutorial and I learn alot from you since I''m a beginner and enjoy for doing my 1st quilt for my own bed ...cant wait for your next video... xoxo
Hi, Melanie. That quilt is so beautiful, and your DIYs are so adorable. Maybe someday you should have your own companion book. You are so talented in terms of sewing. I am deeply grateful to have an awesome channel like yours. I appreciate it. Byron. :)
Hi Melanie, I am just now seeing your videos. I have finished a disappearing 9-patch quilt top (my first quilt ever) and have been pondering whether to have it quilted or to try to quilt it myself. Do you have a video series of machine recommendations and what the machines do (pros and cons)??? I have an OLD singer machine that I purchased over 30 years ago, but would like to upgrade to something that would be able to accommodate a quilt. Thank you! You are precious!
I don't have a sewing machine, but watching your videos made me want to make a quilt for my bed so bad. I think about hand stitching it when I find the right fabric. I'm very confident that I can get a nice result, even though it will be a lot of work. What do you think? Am I crazy? Anyway, I love your tutorials and your personality.
LOL, I woke up in the middle of the night and realized that was why! I'm working on a faux chenille quilt right now (I love making them for baby showers), but I plan on tackling a bigger "real" quilt after I finish watching your tutorials.
Great video! I'd like to see more of these with pattern ideas. Also, what do you do when your fabric folds when you're quilting? I love your videos. Thanks !
What do you do with the tails when have to start a new bobbin or spool of thread when free motion quilting? Like what's the best way to hide/get rid of them while making sure your stitches are still secure and won't start coming out easily? Been loving these tutorials and trying to follow along with my own quilt :)
Hi Nicole, if you know you are getting close to the end and can stop, tack stitch with a few really close stitches and then just trim the tails. However, it often happens to just run out and then you need to trim the tail and then when you start again, put your needle a couple stitches overlap and tack with a couple close stitches to secure. The other method is to "bury a knot". Hope that helps!
Do you have any quilt as you go videos? I want to step up to making larger quilts and I hear that quilting as you go is a good technique to try. As always, thank you for your videos! You've been such a huge help!
Terrific video!! Quick question....... is there a difference between a free motion foot, darning foot or walking presser foot? I am so confused about which foot to buy (I have a Singer Stylist 7258). Again, wonderful video!
How do you choose the color of thread you quilt with? I will be making a quilt for the first time using Tula Pink Tabby Road and I'm not sure what color of thread to use.
Melissa C start with some scrap fabric sandwiches to gain some confidence and then go for it! It will be great! And you can always pick out the stitches if you really need too
Hi Melanie. Thanks for the great tutorials! I love freestyle quilting but I find with my pfaff I don't have a good view of what I am quilting. Any tips?
Thank you for this tutorial. I like how you demonstrate on a real quilt versus some FMQ videos that only show a quilt sandwich. What is the size of your quilt? Do find your Juki's harp is sufficient for most your needs?
When I am quilting I often get tucks on the front and back of my quilt even though I have secured it using safety pins. As a result my quilt is not laying flat and is getting wavy even when on a flat surface. Is there any way to eliminate the tucks and make the quilt flatter? Would inaccurate piecing cause the wavyness of the quilt? I really like this series btw. Thanks!!
I am trying my first quilt. I do not have a free motion quilting foot and was wondering what your opinion was of trying to stitch in the ditch for my quilt. I made my pattern easy since its my first and I just have 6x6 in squares throughout the whole thing. I started going through 2 columns stitching in the ditch and I;m finding it very hard and cumbersome. What are your suggestions.
These are really great videos! Thank you for these! I know you have a Viking emerald and was wondering if you have a walking foot for it and what kind? I bought one off amazon for my emerald and it doesn't fit.
Hi Melanie do you have a 1/4" fmq foot or a 1/5" ?? My juki2000 will be here tomorrow and I need to order a fmq foot today, and not sure which one to get.
I am having a hard time listening to you because i am mesmerized by your eyes...I don't know if your right eye is darker than you left eye or if it is just the lighting....you have beautiful eyes.....very striking....
Meline the videos are great and I am larning more and more each time I know I had made some quilts but you have shown me how to perfect them I did not to to motion sewing on my machine I have not tried that yet. it looks so good and so fast bur I tend to try. I have a sewing machine New home by Janome which changing to a walking foot is easy, I also have a sewing machine that only has clip on feet but think if I am right please correct me if wrong as I am, unsure how too. to remove the part that you clip your fee on i think i unscrew the screw that holds the clip part and the part the releases it. to add my waling foot to the screw. am I right so I can use my walking foot on my machine that had the clip on feet would like to tryI find you videos interesting but you talk so quickly and with your accent it can be hard hope you do not mind me saying please.
I got to this step and it went south. I cannot seem to manage the tension on my machine as I move. The front stitching looks good, but the back was horrible, especially at the peaks of the turns. It's a very entry level machine (Brother XL2600i $97) that can free motion, but I think I've officially meet it's limitation.
+Kathey Merten yes, it's possible your machine just doesn't do the free motion very well. I would try a new needle, then try a new bobbin, then try a different brand thread. Try them independently so that you can figure out what worked if any!
+Melanie Ham Thanks Melanie. I had cleaned the machine, put in a new needle and bobbin before beginning. I also bought Aurafil thread (and the quilting gloves) I was so excited! I think trying to do the free motion killed the machine because after I ripped out the free motion quilting, I tried a straight stitch diagonally across the squares instead and it won't even do that stitch nicely anymore. It doesn't matter how I adjust the tension, it's always the same loopy stitch, sometimes on the front, sometimes on the back. It's time for a new machine before proceeding...looking at the Singer Confidence Quilter. Until then I'll be trying more of your crochet projects! :)
Diana Hiatt bringing the bobbin thread to the top of your quilt ensures a smooth quilt back with no messy spots where your bobbin thread has bunched up on itself at the beginning of your stitching.
Thank you for keeping her alive through her videos!
Melanie’s videos are timeless! She lives on in her videos. What a beautiful soul.
Robert, thank you so much for leaving these videos up. We appreciate it, and we miss Melanie. Again, thank you.
This is the tutorial I needed to gain confidence in doing my first free motion quilted quilt. I sure miss her. She was such an amazing teacher!!!!
Really miss her!! She really taught me a lot . Knew how to teach too!!

It is so great listening to someone who's had a lot of experience--mistakes and problems and discoveries and triumphs too.
You’re amazing! You make this look so easy and approachable. I’ve seen people long arm free quilt and it looks intimidating!

Jennifer Long Have fun! Let me know if you have any questions!
Thank you so much for making quilting so accessible! This is by far the best how-to quilting series I've found and I'm so inspired :)
I totally agree Samantha, Mel is my go to help when quilting. I have learnt everything I know from Melanie Ham. She is such an inspiration!
Thank you that was double for me that part of quilt scare me I used to saw in the between square to be safe but now with your help I feel more confident to do different patterns. Love it!

I was a little bit nervous about free motion quilting at first, but this helps a lot! Thank you!
I love those Dahlia-like flowers!
I'm going to try and make my first quilt pretty soon and this is going to help a lot! Thanks!

thank you for the explanation it was very helpful, i am starting to do quilting. I normally would let the professionals do it, but now i have more confidence to start doing it myself!
You have inspired me to finally attempt to make. Quilt all other tutorials made it see a lot harder. Thank you.
This was kind of amazing, thank you.
Great video!! I love this series so much!!
You have such great tips! Thanks.
I am new to quilting, you are wonderful, thank you for all your help :)

I'm very confident that I can get a nice result, even though it will be a lot of work. What do you think? Am I crazy? Anyway, I love your tutorials and your personality.
Yay, love this next step. Just wondering if you can explain why you pull the bobbin thread up to the topside of the quilt?
Robin K It's so that it won't get caught on the underside as you sew along ;)
LOL, I woke up in the middle of the night and realized that was why! I'm working on a faux chenille quilt right now (I love making them for baby showers), but I plan on tackling a bigger "real" quilt after I finish watching your tutorials.
This was a lovely series. I'm thinking about using the pattern to make a dent in my Amy Butler fq stash.
wzrdreams great idea! Happy Stitching!
as always enjoy your tutorials, I have learned alot being a beginner lol!!
Tressie Carter I'm so glad! Happy Stitching!
TheCraftyGemini she mentioned you on your led lighting on your sewing machine! Great tutorial!
Loved this. Thanks tons. Very helpful.
Darning foot and free motion foot are essentially the same. A walking foot is used for straight stitching many layers together :)
I love your work
Thanks for sharing I am still a little Confused getting it together Quilt Top-Basting-Backing 11-5-19
Great tutorial! I've been wanting to try this. Definitely motivated now.
How do you choose the color of thread you quilt with? I will be making a quilt for the first time using Tula Pink Tabby Road and I'm not sure what color of thread to use.
Gorgeous! You inspired me to pull out that quilt top I've been scared to free motion and ruin my hours and hours of work putting it together. lol
Melissa C start with some scrap fabric sandwiches to gain some confidence and then go for it! It will be great! And you can always pick out the stitches if you really need too
I enjoy videos very much. I am confused on trying to watch you about where to start the quilting and where and what direction you are going.
Hi thanks for getting back to me yesterday I the same make as you and have one of those mats too. ???
Maybe it was a defective blade? Not sure ;)
Thanks!!
What is the best first sewing machine to get? I have never used one but I want to learn to quilt.
Hi mel could you tell me where to find video 3 for beginners please, you make it look so easy thanks for your time.
Your videos are great! I noticed you have a closed toe free motion foot. Any reason for this as opposed to open? Thanks.
You are amazing! Thank you.
you do a beautiful job free motion quilting! do you know a machine function that does the pattern for the user?
AWESOME VIDEO EASY TO UNDERSTAND
I'm getting ready to make my 1St quilt, about how much thread will I need to make a twin size?? everyone talks about fabric size but not thread..
It really depends on what pattern piecing you'll be doing. I always just get a large spool and I have never ran out during a quilt making.
I have a Brother 2701. The feed dogs do not drop down. Can I do free motion quilting?
I have that machine also. I take a business card and tape it over my feed dogs leaving a hole for my needle. Works great!!
You make look so easy!! ehehe
Hi Melanie☺ can you please make a rag quilt tutorial or a fast, easy sewing project that I can make for my kids. I love your tutorials btw.👍
Hi Melanie do you have a 1/4" fmq foot or a 1/5" ?? My juki2000 will be here tomorrow and I need to order a fmq foot today, and not sure which one to get.
What is the gloves for?
Thanks so much for these outstanding videos! You make the hardest things so simple. Please make a video showing us your whiskey collection ;-)
Question- How do I know if my tension is good or bad?
By your thread and stitching. If its tearing or the threads are loose
Unfortunately Melanie passed away from cancer. We all miss her 😢
Where can I get the 1/4" piecing foot?
Loveeee this tutorial. definitely going to make so many things using this technique ! I'd also love a chance to win this giveaway!!
Hi Melanie, I was wondering why you pull the thread up to the top of the fabric? And I asume that you stitch on the right side (top) of the quilt?
Diana Hiatt bringing the bobbin thread to the top of your quilt ensures a smooth quilt back with no messy spots where your bobbin thread has bunched up on itself at the beginning of your stitching.
Phil Davis thank you! I'm a beginner garment sewer and I've never seen this.
I will be stuck on this part what if we can't do a design
