I return again and again to BJD video tutorials. The art style is just what I want and the style and pace of instruction is so good! I’ve been watching for years and always learn something new. Thanks Bee Jay! ❤️
I never thought of using references in this fashion. I find that this will help far more than struggling through either not tracing or full look at picture and try to mimic. Thanks for the new prospective.
Thank you for this video! I`ve always been quite good of copy reference directly. Most art that I`ve done past 20 years has been drawing cards for relatives or painting rocks for my mon...and I´ve used mostly my own photos as reference and not been selling any of them so there have been no copyright issues. Now I really would like to improve as an artist and start selling my own art designs online. I find it very hard to make real image in to a cartoon one, so thank you for this video. This was really helpful!
BeeJay!!! Thanks for the video and challenge ... I’m working on a project thanks to your podcast ... and this challenge will fit perfectly with that .. will definitely participate!!
I must agree, this is one of the very best video tutorials for drawing from a reference photo. I learned a great deal from this tutorial. Thank you for explaining how the photo copyright applies to tracing verbatim of a photo. Although all my art is for my personal use only, I am guilty of tracing, (with the mistaken idea I was actually learning from it. NOT!). I will be forwarding this video to several friends who together we are working to improve our sketching and drawing abilities. I know I say this almost every video that you do BeeJay, but I learn something new EVERY TIME I watch your tutorials. I also have things reinforced in each video. In your “start an art channel on UA-cam” you mention that your goal is to teach somthing(s) in each video, you master this every time you make a tutorial. GOAL achieved every time! FYI BeeJay, I’m gritting my teeth and reloading my Instagram app. SIGH….. I want to,share my work with you and fellow fans of “Let’s draw a….” So soon I will be there under the name “LeBonesCreations”.
Great video, super useful😁 i am new to cartoon drawing and i have been searching for videos on how to draw from reference photos, and how to build up shapes and today youtube suggest me your video...best ever!!! Thank you so so so much😁👍👍
This reminded me of an at lesson I did once. I was reminded of it by a head teacher who at the time was a student and I was a a supply teacher, I recently ended my career as a supply teacher and my ex student was now the head teacher. She reminded me of 'Mrs Pococks's load bearing legs'. I was teaching life drawing and we ended up with liquorice legs hang from huge bodies I noticed they had recently done work on bridges (design tech) so I hitched up my skirt and put my leg on a chair and I asked them to observe the muscle. To look at the size and weight of my body and how my legs needed to be in proportionate to hold the weight of my body. We then proceeded to draw in circles ovals ( sausages) etc. She said she was amazed that I could break all the rules of decency but then realised that if I were in shorts teaching PE I wouldn't have shown any more of my body, and she thought I was an excellent teacher. Funny though, I was always unorthodox, creative I suppose.
This vid is perfect timing. Not same animal but ive been challenge to learn to sketch a Hippo for 2 weeks and with this being a Rhino and similar shapes. Watching this has given me a better idea of how to practice. Thank you 😊
Killer video man. This is awesome, I design and print shirts and your tracing method building the shapes is awesome. I feel like it helps you visualize volume so much better. Tracing will always look flat IMO. Great video.
I know cartoons are focused on the characters themselves but I would love to see a video talking about doing some of the background items for cartoons in a cartoon type style. Trees, flowers, houses etc
Thank you for another great tutorial. I really liked this one and found it very helpful. I know your time is limited but I'd love you to consider doing some more tutorials on how to play with the reference image shapes to make them more cartoon like
I really learned a lot from your videos thank you very much! Maybe you could make a video where you show how to draw water in a good looking style. Like how to make it look like it is moving in a river, in the ocean, etc.
This video was fantastic. I find the process of identifying shapes sort of difficult (tend to use to many shapes or find to complex shapes) so seeing how you go from identifying the shapes, to then taking those initial shapes and reworking them was really insightful. I would love more of this, either of different animals or more difficult human poses. Keep up the cracking work
I was just thinking about this this morning... Driving along, and wondering how you get from "this is a fish" to "check out this cool street art style fish painting"
I wish I knew how to do this with a pet photo 😭 I get the concept your sharing (thank you so much for that by the way) but I still can’t see how to take a pet photo and make it into a portrait (non realistic I like your cartoony style)

It's very useful for me thank you for everything 😊
Wow this is the best explanation of cartoony exaggeration, I think I can grasp it now.
Just came across your channel and I’m hooked! I’ve drawn the zombie the pig and the fish so far. Also purchased your liner set! Keep them coming
I love watching your drawing process. It is really helping me understand how to break down shapes.
Thanks so much...glad you found it helpful!
Thank you Brotha will be following you like a lost orphan. .

I watched so many of yours videos that when I go to sleep, I hear your voice in my head still …
Another great video, thanks!
Thanks, Thomas!
I needed this today.. I work in a fast paced screen print shop and reference photos are key when you don’t have much time
Glad it might come in handy for the job! Appreciate you watching!

Thanks! It’s definitely all about changing the sizes of the base shapes and stretching the realistic proportions into something more extreme.
I really learned a lot from your videos thank you very much!

cool new lower third (i wouldn't mind if you show us how you make them)...video is awesome as always
Thanks! New lower thirds are pre-made ones I purchased on Envato...sometimes it just easier and a time saver to buy them, lol!
