This one was my first exposure to Batman, viewing it on VHS as a kid. Since I've seen the original film from 89 as I'm older, as well as the Dark Knight Trilogy, I appreciate them all, however this one is by far my favorite.
The scene of Batman and Catwoman teaming up to stop the Circus Gang from kidnapping Gotham’s first born children sounds so awesome!! Too bad it was cut tho
I saw Batman Returns on opening night. There are two lines that were cut the I very clearly remember. After Catwoman falls into the truckload of sand she feels the acid burn and says "Bastard". We then cut to the Batcave and Batman, taking off his costume says, "Bitch." In every version I have seen on home video, "Bastard" remains and "Bitch" has been cut. In the comic adaptation it has been replaced with "witch". When the monkey arrives at Penguin's hideout with the letter from Batman, Penguin says "Where are the children?". I very much remember him saying "Did you have to stop at McDonald's?". That line has never surfaced since. Probably because of the McDonald's controversy over the film.
I am sure that when I saw it in the theater, Max Shreck’s line after Selena escorts Bruce Wayne out of the conference rooms was, “…if that bitch tries to blackmail me, I’ll drop her out a higher window.” In the version that is streaming on Max today, he says, “..if she tries to blackmail me, I’ll drop her out a higher window.” It makes sense that the scene would have been shot both ways, since in those days it was common to shoot an alternate version of a scene minus the swear words for when the movie would inevitably air on network television.
You know when Penguin says they treated me like #2 he means they treated him like crap/shit. Not that he's one of two children. Taking a #2 is common term for having to poop.
Dennis O'Neil's comic adaptation preserves quite a few of these sequences. But there are certain scenes and lines that were not in the finished film or in the comic, but were either invented by Craig Shaw Gardner for his novelization or lifted by him from the script. One line that was shot but ultimately cut was Selina saying "Electroshock therapy. We BOTH feel better." (after poking the clown with his own stun-gun) There was also a Penguin line that was heavily edited for censorship reasons: "You wanna greet any more body parts? Or stroll down memory lane with some torn-up, kinky Polaroids? Failed urine tests?"
Still blows my mind that Marlon Wayans, the dude who played the dumb stoner in Scary Movie, was supposed to star in this creepy aesthetically-grotesque dark movie. That would’ve been the weirdest thing to see, and honestly the film probably wouldn’t have been as good if he was in it so I can see why they cut his part. The burton flicks always worked best with batman as a solo
When Robin was finally used for Batman Forever, screenwriters Lee and Janet Scott Batchler talk to their assistant, who grew up in the circus and she's part of a big circus family, and the Batchlers asked her about her job, and they came up with Dick Grayson with a big circus family.
@@evanzaremba4722 Were you even around back then? He was cast as Robin in "Forever," not in B&R. And nobody was rejoicing about it. They just braced themselves for whatever the execution might be.
2:00 I just saw Returns for the first time in decades, and seeing Keaton's Batman and Pfeiffer's Catwoman fighting side-by-side would have been GREAT to see.
About the circus train fight sequence, I do believe some of this was shot. Around when this movie was released, I was reading a magazine mentioning about the Batman sequel. It showed some snapshots of Returns. I'll never forget one pic had the circus train in the background, in the foreground... some unconscious Red Triangle members strewn about. Not sure if it was a publicity shot or what.
The production team really said dude what the fuck you cant have a dude dressed as a devil attacking and burning civilians in the most dangerous city in fiction, the kids man come on, instead have batman kill him with fire from the batmobile, the kidsll love that
I wonder if that was the first draft rewrite that Wesley Strick did, as that draft had a far grander sequence of the kidnapping of the the first born sons, according to Daniel Waters in a recent podcast interview.
@@KyloRen0127 You can just Google Batman Returns scripts, and all 3 scripts are online. None of them feature Batman teaming up with Catwoman, nor do they have Harvey Dent as Max Schrek's role.
@brandonspain12345 True! However, according to an interview with Daniel Waters on Superhero Stuff You Should Know, Weasley Strick did two revisions of Daniel Waters' draft. In the first revision, there was a scene of Chip Shrek trying to seduce Selina in her apartment, and the kidnapping of the first-born sons of gotham was much larger and more action packed. This makes me wonder if this as of yet unseen script has a scene of Batman and Catwoman teaming up to fight the red triangle circus gang, or it could have just been made for merchandise. (Side note) Daniel Waters did say that he sent a list to WB of things that he thought were wrong with the script. It was later rewritten into the version that was eventually released. I highly recommend that you give it a listen as it is a great interview that sheds a lot of light on the production of the film. ua-cam.com/video/b9q3j7cgQck/v-deo.html
I always interpreted the "I was their number one son...and they treated me like number two" to be more of a play on words, i.e. "they treated me like shit". In the UK "Number two" is a euphemism for going for a bowel movement but I'm not sure if that's also used in America.
Every Batman film is a work of art, technically, but this one is the most artistically beautiful.

@@imperiorii5781 its just oozing with creativity! Catwoman's costume is perfection. Also Batman's for that matter lol
This film goes over people's heads. It's like an indie foreign art film disguised as a Batman film.
The Batman-Catwoman team up for rescuing the children would have amazing to see, such a shame that got cut.
Yes. I would have rather seen that than a bunch of penguins walking through town with rockets on their backs.
When Penguin said "I was treated like number two" he meant a bowel movement. He wasn't implying that his parents had any other children.
I just love everything about this movie, the score, the sets, the designs in costumes and veichles, and the overall characters,I prefer this over 89.

There’s gotta be some way to track that down. Maybe a bootleg version of the movie from ‘92?
The McDonald's line is in the comic adaptation.
I remember a scene in the 89 film where the laughing sounds from Joker's corpse is revealed to come from a toy pair of lips.
"Bastard" was kept in, at least it certainly was in the DVD and VHS versions I have.

Shame that the fire-breathing clown torching civilians was cut. It would have made Batman's decision to torch him, not so sadistic.
My thoughts exactly. I always thought that part was too much and just mean. In context, though? Dude deserved it.
Wow I knew Marlon was casted to play Robin but I didn't know he receives royalties from the movie 😲
I don't know. You tell me?
Free money, the best kind of money
1:50 - Penguins statement was a play on words, "Treated me like #2" meant they treated him like sh*t. Not that he was the second son.

No mention of the deleted scene of the fat clown that the penguin shot calling batman giving him a heads up?
Funny how they scrapped the Batman store for being too meta when today superhero films get pretty meta.
I also heard Max Shrek was supposed to turn into Two-Face at the end.
