This movie is a Tim Burton masterpiece that (even at 25 years old) doesn't feel old, and I LOVE that. Also about the scene when you thought you were supposed to think Katrina was supposed to be dead, you weren't, she was totally A-okay, she just fainted in the church after you know...seeing what she saw and then that next scene was like, yeah next morning and she's still just sleeping
This movie was full of nerd royalty. Christopher Lee has played so many roles I can’t start. Michael Gambon played dumbledoor , Richard Griffiths played Vernon Dersley, Ian McDiarmid played the emperor in Star Wars and Michael Gough played Alfred in the first Batman movies!
One of my favorite Tim Burton movies ever made! Daniel Day Lewis, Brad Pitt, And Liam Neeson were considered for the role of Ichabod Crane before Johnny Depp was picked. Marlon Brando was even considered for the role of The Headless Horseman, until Christopher Walken was picked as his character has no dialogue except for his screams and shouting. Winona Ryder was also considered for the role of Katrina Van Tassel, until Christina Ricci was picked as she was a huge fan of both Depp's and Burton's films. The movie was originally going to be a modern day slasher horror film where a couple of teens find themselves trapped in the town of Sleepy Hollow with the real Headless Horseman. Kevin Yahger, Special makeup effects artist was going to make the film in 1992, until Tim Burton was picked as he enjoyed making Gothic looking films like BATMAN, BEETLEJUICE, and EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. The film was made on location at Shepperton Studios London England in November 1998 and wrapped in May 1999. It was a box office and a critical success, making $207 million dollars against a $70 million dollar budget. It won the Oscar for Best Production Design, while it was nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Cinematography.
They used to show the cartoon every Halloween on one of the 4 channels we had back then but I used to love when it would come on. Maybe it's on UA-cam.
This movie has legitimately scary moments. The Hessian Warrior who was decapitated by a cannon ball is haunting the paths of Sleepy Hollow. In the story Ichabod Crane was very cowardly No one knows what happens to him in the end. Johnny Depp was excellent as the brave Ichabod Crane. Great Jump scares and gore make it a great one. It is a horror classic just in time for Halloween!
Great reaction Nicki like always. Love this movie. There are some fun-facts about it. The character of Ichabod Crane wasn’t originally written as a very attractive person. The Disney movie in 1949 touched upon this by giving the character a giant nose with even bigger ears. The character is also usually very lanky with big feet. That being said, Johnny Depp doesn’t really match this description. As revealed in the DVD featurette called Behind Sleepy Hollow, Depp mentioned that he would have liked to wear prosthetics to bring the giant nose and ears of Crane to life. However, ultimately Tim Burton didn’t think they needed the effect. Tim Burton specifically asked to have the heads spin around! Even though the decapitations in the movie may have not been very realistic, they looked very Burton-esque. The reason for this was because Tim Burton specifically asked the special effects department to figure out how they could get the heads to spin before they fell to the ground, as revealed in the featurette Behind Sleepy Hollow. To create the effect, the team had to create mold’s of the victims’ heads to attach to a mechanism which would make the mold spin around. They also created a skeleton from electro-magnets so that they could flip a switch to make the fake body fall limp. The legendary Ray Park was the stuntman behind the headless horseman. Park is most known for his Star Wars role of Darth Maul and his role of Snake Eyes in the G.I. Joe movies. The featurette revealed that Park was filmed while wearing a blue mask, which could easily be digitally removed during post-production to give off the headless appearance. Keep up the good work.
You should definitely see Tim Burton’s Batman films! The old guy with the one blind eye, The Notary, in this movie plays Alfred in them! He’s always been my favorite Alfred.
This original classic scary movie was titled: "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", starring Jeff Goldblum, & scared the crap out of a lot of us Gen-X kids as we watched it in school in the '70's & '80's! 🎥 🏫
Christopher Lee was also in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. Miranda Richardson (Katrina's step-mother) is another one who played in the Harry Potter films. She was Rita Skeeter. Also, you're right about the age difference between Depp and Ricci. He was 36, and she was 19. And, I just remembered: Michael Gough was Alfred in the Michael Keaton Batman movies.
Sleepy hollow was filmed from November 1998 to May 1999 and Christina Ricci's birthday is on February 12, she would've been 18 for about 3 months of filming and then 19 for about the last 3 months of filming😁
Another one of Burton/ Depp other collabs makes a great double feature with this, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Very much a similar vibe, but with song.

Ichabod has one of the MOST TRAGIC backstories of ANY character I've EVER seen... He's so squeamish around blood because he saw his MOTHER GET PUT IN AN IRON MAIDEN AS A KID. She had been found guilty of "witchcraft", and the punishment was being thrown in the iron maiden...
Sleepy Hollow is a town in Westchester County NY , just outside of New York City where the legend began. As you might guess Sleepy Hollow on Halloween is a blast.
I'm glad you finally caught yourself trying to out-guess the movie. 😀 You're not alone- SOO many reactors do that on any type of suspenseful movie instead of just enjoying the tension. A well written, well directed movie will tell us what we need to know, WHEN we need to know it.
Haha you are so right! That’s a great way to explain it. I’m usually really good at following what the writers/directors are trying to tell us so when it doesn’t click naturally I try not to force it but the high tension definitely had me guessing!! Haha I was so convinced it was Lady Van Tassel RIGHT before she “died”. So it really threw me off haha
Hey Nicki💋🩵, notice the two actors your recognize both played wizards in other movies, also the fat man in this is also Harry’s Uncle. One of my favorite Tim Burton movies, and great pick for Spooky Month. 🎃
38:52 - That's called a 'zoetrope'. It was used in early animation, and most people only ever see the word these days when they watch a Francis Ford Coppola movie, or something he produced. His film company is called American Zoetrope. The use of the zoetrope is slightly anachronistic in this film, as they weren't invented until 1835, but it feels sufficiently "old-timey" enough that nobody notices or cares.
GREAT reaction Nicki! The casting it´s awesome: Johnny Depp (many well known roles) Christina Ricci (Mermaids, Casper, Wednesday Addams in The Addams, etc.) Christopher Walken (The deer hunter, Pulp Fiction, etc.) Sir Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter) Casper Van Dien (Ricco in Starship Troopers) Ian Mcdiarmid (The Emperor in Star Wars) Christopher Lee (Saruman in LOTR, Count Dooku in Star Wars, Dracula, etc.) Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon in Harry Potter) Jeffrey Jones (Beettlejuice, Amadeus, etc.)
Nicki, the HEADLESS horseman was played by Scottish actor/martial artist/stunt man Ray Park. He's probably best known as Toad from the original X-Men trilogy, Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe, and as Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. When he was not "headless', obviously he was Christopher Walken. HOW DID YOU NOT CATCH THAT?? 😂❤✌🤪
That’s awesome to learn about the Martial Artist/Stunt Guy that played him! They often don’t get credit. Thank you for sharing. And I did notice Christopher Walken! At 14:14 ! He looked so scary in this movie lol
One of my favorite movies ever. I saw this when it originally came out in theaters; this was during my third year in the Navy and I was stationed in San Diego. I was 17 when I saw my first Tim Burton film, Beetlejuice. I saw it four times in the theater and had a little crush on Winona Ryder when I saw it. I also saw Edward Scissorhands when that came out in theaters; that one has a special place in my heart for two reasons. The first is that it was the last film the legendary Vincent Price was in before he passed away and I got to see his final role on the big screen. The second reason is that Edward Scissorhands was the first movie I ever went to see with a girl. So many things are amazing about Sleepy Hollow, but my favorite is Danny Elfman's score. It was so atmospheric, mysterious and, in some places, dark. It remains my favorite of all Danny Elfman's work.
Christopher Lee was also a little inspiration for Ian Flemings James Bond. Apart from his many roles (LOTR Movies, Star Wars movies, Sherlock Holmes & Dracula) over the decades he was also a prolific voice actor as well due to his very distinct tones. So many great actors in this movie.
Even though I was surprised I didn’t get it right away - I love that it was when he went into “story mode” that I immediately noticed. His voice is just UNCANNY to me.
You haven't lived until you've seen the 1980 made-for-TV legendary classic starring Jeff Goldblum and Dick Butkus. Best viewed on a 1:1 tube TV in a middle school library.
Peak Burton marterial, macabre gothic horror, a superb cast, and enough humor to not take it too seriously despite being a horror movie. And truly one of Depp’s most underrated films.
One part of the movie made me stop and rewind, and it's not what people may think. When Christina Ricci's character tells Depp's that she curses the day... She is on her horse, which rears up for a moment. But she flawlessly keeps delivering her lines with next to zero reaction, other than to perfectly keep aright.
Love "Sleepy Hollow", especially every Halloween... so good. The cast for this was INSANE. The scene where Brom (Casper Van Dien) pretended to be the Horseman and threw the flaming pumpkin at Crane was an homage to the Disney animated short "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". Another great film where Christina Ricci has an outstanding performance is "Black Snake Moan" (Samuel L. Jackson isn't too shabby either ;).
Still cannot beet the old cartoon for making kids laugh till they cry. My grandkids laugh so hard It makes everyone laugh with them. They tried to keep some of the humor but failed for the most part I still get a chuckle but no gut tiering full body laughing.
There are no kissing scenes between Ichabod and Katrina because Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci were too uncomfortable to film them. They have known each other for years and have a very brother/sister relationship.
the original film adaptation of this is “The adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.” Mr. Toad was a separate story. Both animated. Ichabod Craine was a cowardly gangly school teacher who shows up in town, Brahms (sp?) gets jealous of him and Katrina and it’s believed he dressed as the Horseman and scared him away. Which is why they show him doing that in THIS film.
On foot. Rob Inch plays all the horseback riding scenes. Fun fact Rob inch also played Liam Neeson's stunt double for Qui-Gon Jinn in The Phantom Menace
Sleepy Hollow is a real place located just north of Manhattan. There is a train from Grand Central Station that takes you there. Sleey Hollow and Tarrytown was settled by the Dutch (along the Hudson Valley) in the 1600s. New York was originally named New Amsterdam before the Revolutionary War until it was taken over by the British in the 1700's and renamed for the then Duke of York. The old Dutch church remains in Sleepy Hollow as well as its famous cemetery. The remains of the bridge is there but no longer has a cover. Much of the Dutch names remain throughout the region, such as Harlem River, Van Cortland Park, Staten Island, etc.
FOR A JOHNNY DEPP HALLOWEEN: The First Big Movie he was in was "Nightmare on Elm Street"! Or, for Spooky Giggles, He was Barnabas Collins, the Lead Character in a movie called "Dark Shadows", A Supernatural Soap Opera series in the 60's. "Who doesn't love Johnny Depp? Ummm.... Amber Heard? hehehe POWDERED WIGS for men was a sign of Official Stature and Wealth back then... a Tradition from England we adopted for awhile.
The cinematographer used special filters to make this film look as close to black and white as possible. As a result, blood didn't stand out as much so they had to make the blood orange.
It was funny how confused you were about the tree. Haha. He just wanted to see inside the tree, why blood was coming out of it. “I guess he wanted a piece of it?” Like why would you want a piece of that lol
This movie is great...But,there's a implied horrific scene that people kinda gloss over. You see the Headless Horseman enter a home and there's the husband the wife and a child hiding. The Headless Horseman kills the Husband and the wife and then he exists the house and you see that he has 3 decapitated heads.😯
Omg i actually really want to watch that one for the channel because I’ve never seen it despite me having a cry baby cut off t shirt! Would love to see young Johnny depp in action
You should look up Gormenghast (2000). Four-part miniseries-one hour per episode- about a city contained within a castle, isolated for 3,000+ years, and ruled by a stupidly eccentric royal family. It’s a frickin trip. Shakespearean, silly, weird, dramatic, and SO much fun to watch.
The movie audio faded in and out a bit too much ... of course I'm older I don't hear as well as you youngsters. But, I have heard other reactors fine with the same in an out audio ... it just seems to be a bit too low on this one.
Not one that I actively post on. Maybe one day though! I do post on Tik Tok occasionally , @nicolelennea and on instagram I have two, @slynkstyle and @nicolelennea.
I love period pieces. mainly because of fashion. especially in the case of men it has devolved and became boring. I would sell my soul for headless horseman tall boots. anyway if you liked this one maybe you will find The red riding hood from 2011 interesting.
Good reaction Nicki. Such a great Tim Burton movie. You really need to see Christopher Lee as Dracula. The Hammer horror movies are spectacular. And there are so many great Christina Ricci movies for you. Cursed is pretty fun. I think you'd like it.
I still can't figure out how Lady van Tassel, having faked her own death, is then planning to show up to claim her inheritance without arousing any suspicions; by the way, you may have recognized the actress who played that role, Miranda Richardson, as Rita Skeeter in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. If you've seen the Tim Burton version of Batman, you'll probably remember Michael Gough (Hardenbrook the notary) as Alfred the butler. Sir Christopher Lee (the judge in this movie, and Saruman) first became a major star when he played the title role in Horror of Dracula in 1958, a role he would repeat (not counting trivial cameos) in seven more movies, for a total of six more movies in that role than anyone else has ever done; Michael Gough also had a major role in that first 1958 Dracula movie, the first vampire film ever made in color. If you've seen the Star Wars prequels, you''ll also remember Lee for his role in those, as well as the role played by Ian McDiarmid, the doctor in Sleepy Hollow. Jeffrey Jones (Reverend Steenwyck) has also been in several memorable movies, like Amadeus or The Hunt for Red October. And you should really watch the Disney cartoon version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which is both great and a basically very faithful version of the original Washington Irving short story, by which the Tim Burton movie was only extremely loosely inspired; but there is one shot in the Burton's Sleepy Hollow that is an extremely close recreation of, and pretty clearly a tribute to, the climactic shot in the Disney version. And incidentally, the horse's name, Gunpowder, does come from the original Washington Irving story, which was pretty certainly inspired by Irish legends of the Duhallen, who appears in different contexts as either a headless horseman or a headless coachman; this movie is, as far as I know, the only one in which such a figure appears in both capacities. (You can see the Duhallen as a coachman in Disney's Darby O'Gill and the Little People, an absolutely wonderful and charming 1959 movie with special effects far ahead of its time; I have heard it said, whether truly or not I do not know, that Sean Connery's performance in that movie may have helped lead to his casting in the role of James Bond.)
No worries Nikki. The two characters look completely different. Dumbledore has a huge beard. I didn't realize they were the same til you said his name at the beginning.
This is the movie in which Christina Ricci took her turn as Most Beautiful Woman in the World. 🥰
😊. Yesssss! How she was sooooo beautiful and angelic!
Absolutely! The dresses/fashion of that era really brought out her natural beauty!!!😍😍😍
Lmao no.
Really? I like her, normally, but they made her so white and wash-out that she looked like a corpse. I definitely prefer her with darker hair, too.

That is very true. Did not realize that till you said it. Lol.

In the original legend, Ichabod Crane is a simple school teacher.
Dumbledore, Palpatine, Uncle Vernon,
Saruman
The actor who played the notary also played Garrick Olivander in the HP films.
Ollivander was played by actor John Hurt.
Notary Hardenbrook was played by Michael Gough.
Yeah Tim Burton's first big movie was Pee-wee's big adventure which is a very fun and entertaining movie.

Much of the Dutch names remain throughout the region, such as Harlem River, Van Cortland Park, Staten Island, etc.
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way
Not recognizing Dumbledore earlier probably didn’t need excessive apologies for ten minutes. You’re good.
Great movie; saw it twice in the theater when it first came out
Ray Park plays the headless horseman. He is Darth Maul in Star Wars and Toad in X-men
You recognized Dumbledore, but do you recognize Uncle Vernon?
Did you also identify Rita Skeeter?
Dude, I did not! And I am SHOCKED with how many Harry Potter Actors are in this film ! And this came out 2 years before the first Harry Potter film.
Nicki, another two movies for Halloween with Johnny Depp are From Hell and The Ninth Gate. You are going to love them.
Ummm.... Amber Heard? hehehe
POWDERED WIGS for men was a sign of Official Stature and Wealth back then... a Tradition from England we adopted for awhile.
That's either a very large coffee cup or a very small human.
The cinematographer used special filters to make this film look as close to black and white as possible. As a result, blood didn't stand out as much so they had to make the blood orange.
Also, to be fair, Katrina and Ichabod‘s first meeting was a kiss, so the chemistry kinda started there.
Fun Fact: Sleepy Hollow is a real place. And a tourist town now
Johnny Depp used to babysit Christina Ricci when she was a kid and he was a struggling actor
I love the atmosphere of this movie; so very.... Fall.
It was funny how confused you were about the tree. Haha. He just wanted to see inside the tree, why blood was coming out of it. “I guess he wanted a piece of it?” Like why would you want a piece of that lol
Maybe to cast a spell or something?
@@lennea23 mm perhaps
She got Saruman and Dumbledore, but missed Palpatine.
Nicki has never seen Star Wars
This movie is great...But,there's a implied horrific scene that people kinda gloss over. You see the Headless Horseman enter a home and there's the husband the wife and a child hiding. The Headless Horseman kills the Husband and the wife and then he exists the house and you see that he has 3 decapitated heads.😯
Exists?
If you haven’t seen Cry-Baby yet I highly recommend it! I don’t know if the movie would be your cup of tea but Johnny Depp is sooo hot in that movie!
Omg i actually really want to watch that one for the channel because I’ve never seen it despite me having a cry baby cut off t shirt! Would love to see young Johnny depp in action
I remember this one. Very burtony which i don't remember if i knew before
You should look up Gormenghast (2000). Four-part miniseries-one hour per episode- about a city contained within a castle, isolated for 3,000+ years, and ruled by a stupidly eccentric royal family. It’s a frickin trip. Shakespearean, silly, weird, dramatic, and SO much fun to watch.
Johnny Depp looks sort of Steam Punk in this film.
He does! I love it❤
The movie audio faded in and out a bit too much ... of course I'm older I don't hear as well as you youngsters. But, I have heard other reactors fine with the same in an out audio ... it just seems to be a bit too low on this one.
Holy cow what happened with the audio? Seems like the volume of the voiceover and the movie got flipped?!
try dark shadows, another masterpiece of Burton/Depp
The big guy was Harry Potter's uncle.
6:21 also in the Johnny Depp version of the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Omg is that Willy Wonkas Dad!?
Why’d you immediately jump to her being dead? Haha she was just on a bed. You are confusing the crap out of yourself this whole movie lol
She’s laying on a bed with her hands on her stomach all peacefully like and he’s saying goodbye to her. lol kinda seemed like it for a second.
Nikki, Do u have your own UA-cam channel?
Not one that I actively post on. Maybe one day though! I do post on Tik Tok occasionally , @nicolelennea and on instagram I have two, @slynkstyle and @nicolelennea.
I love period pieces. mainly because of fashion. especially in the case of men it has devolved and became boring. I would sell my soul for headless horseman tall boots.
anyway if you liked this one maybe you will find The red riding hood from 2011 interesting.
I like your hair this length. You look cool.
Who the hell is Dumbledorf?
Burton/Depp best: ED WOOD, and Sleepy Hollow
I’m gonna have to watch Ed Wood now. Because this one was AMAZING
Another good Depp movie is The Ninth Gate.
Good reaction Nicki. Such a great Tim Burton movie. You really need to see Christopher Lee as Dracula. The Hammer horror movies are spectacular.
And there are so many great Christina Ricci movies for you. Cursed is pretty fun. I think you'd like it.
"Who does't love Johnny Depp??"...
Amber Heard does't... 😅😅😅😅😅
Terrifier
I am getting the impression you like Johnny? 😁
3:46 Amber Heard
To be fair, he looks nothing like Dumbledore here. Yes his voice is distinct but still. Take it easy on yourself.
You look like Miley Cyrus
You look Very Similar to Miley Cyrus
For more Tim Burton you should react to Pee Wee's Big Adventure.
No worries Nikki. The two characters look completely different. Dumbledore has a huge beard. I didn't realize they were the same til you said his name at the beginning.
