The perfect Halloween movie! Just as "It's a Wonderful Life" is part of our annual Christmas must watch list, "Sleepy Hollow" is part of our Halloween one.
The voice of Christopher Lee, so iconic, so intimidating!
This movie is so awesome and 1999 was a crazy good year for kino lovers in general!
The Mummy, The 13th Warrior, Sleepy Hollow and Payback came out in the same year!! All 4 are so damn good. I saw them all on the big screen!
Especially The 13th Warrior is such an underrated masterpiece and one of Antonio Banderas' best roles! You 2 should look into it, its right up your alley!
Its one of my favorite movies of all times!
13th Warrior is a favorite!
Fight Club also
Ravenous (1999)
1999 was such a fantastic year for film. Putting aside The Matrix and Fight Club... I remember seeing this film in early november, before my birthday, and going, "Holy shit, this is amazing." It's a really underrated classic.
@@adarael Oh damn, how could I forget The Matrix???
I did see fight club waaaay later, like years, so I didn't have that in mind, but Matrix? Its way too big and also one of my faves to forget about it in such a list!
Thanks for reminding me!
+ Tim Burton🔥

@@peperino25 Another one Tim Burton did I liked was Dark Shadows also with Johny Depp
I loved FRIGHTENERS.😊
yes please!
I really loved "Big Fish"
@@MaikKellerhals I have been wanting to see that one.
Danny Elfman did do Batman and Batman Returns music. He does many of Tim Burton's movies.
Magistrate Phillips played in Harry Potter as the character Vernon. Dersley, katrina's dad in this movie also played in harry potter as dumbledore movies 3 through 7 The actress that plays katrina van tassel. Also played in another movie called casper
And Miranda Richardson (the stepmother) was Rita Skeeter in HP.
The actor who played Katrina's father played Dumbledore.
You also have Dracula/Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), the Emperor in Star Wars (Ian McDiarmid), Alfred from Batman (Michael Gough), Harry Potter's Uncle (Richard Griffiths), and the principal from Ferris Bueller (Jeffrey Jones) - all a TON of great character actors!
@@minnesotajones261 Also uncle Vernon from Harry Potter played Magistrate Phillips
@@minnesotajones261 Don´t forget Martin Landau and Christopher Walken!
And her stepmother was Rita Skeeter
@@Electricviolet 2 roles which demonstrate Miranda Richardson's range would be as Queen Elizabeth I or 'Queenie' in BBC's comedy 'Blackadder the Second', from the Blackadder historical comedies and the role of Mrs Arbuthnot, as the neglected, religious & stoic wife in the wonderful 'Enchanted April', set in England and Italy, just after the First World War, for which she and Joan Plowright both got Academy Award nominations for Best Actress.
I visited the actual town of Sleepy Hollow in New York a couple years ago, it's a cool little town especially during Halloween.
One of my favorite Tim Burton movies.
I was crazy about this movie when it came out. Not only because it had Wednesday Addams in it AND the dad from Beetlejuice (or Ferris Bueller's principal), but both Count Dooku and Emperor Palpatine together again? Priceless!!
(Alright, alright, they technically didn't share any scenes together and probably didn't see each other on set but I still count it!)
The man that does all the Headless Horseman action scenes is the Darth Maul actor Ray Park. This movie is a tribute to Hammer Horror.
The reverend in this town is played by Jeffrey Jones who was the principal in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and he was also in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice".
I liked him very much in "Stay tuned", with John Ritter... God may rest you John
Dog Soldiers 2002 is an excellent werewolf movie.
Ichabod Crane was a real person. He lived in Staten Island, New York in the late 1700’s. Sleepy Hollow is also an actual place in New York. It’s believed the “headless horseman” legend was based on a Hessian soldier who was decapitated by a canonball on Halloween 1776 in New York as well.
23:24 This guy here is Dr. Lancaster...played by Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine)
New York was originally occupied by the Netherlands and was called New Amsterdam before the British overtook the area and renamed it after the then Duke of York.
Many of the street names and buildings in New York have Dutch names.
The Hessens were recruited by the British crown to fight against the colonists during the Revolutionary War.
Sleepy Hollow is located just north of Manhattan via Metro North train station. There are tours in Sleepy Hollow with limited access to the famed cemetery and church. There is a bridge but it no longer has a cover.
The actor playing Brom Van Brunt is Casper Van Dien, who is also of Dutch ancestry.
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way
So, take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks
When this movie came out, my only knowledge of the story was from a Disney animated movie, "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad". It had two short stories. The first part was based on The Wind in the Willows (1908), the second was based on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820).
There are no other Ichabod Crane movies per se, but From Hell features Johnny Depp as the inspector trying to stop Jack the Ripper. And the Ninth Gate is also similar with Johnny Depp trying to solve a mystery with a supernatural /demonic backdrop
Theres a Disney animated short(30mns long) of the headless horseman story called The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow from 1949.
I think you mean "There's an AMAZING Disney animated short..."
@@fusiliers European here. There's nothin' amazing about Disney...
GREAT reaction guys for this incredible movie!!
The casting it´s awesome:
Johnny Depp (many well known roles)
Christina Ricci (Mermaids, Casper, Wednesday Addams in The Addams, etc.)
Christopher Walken (The deer hunter, Pulp Fiction, etc.)
Sir Michael Gambon (Dumbledore in Harry Potter)
Casper Van Dien (Ricco in Starship Troopers)
Ian Mcdiarmid (The Emperor in Star Wars)
Christopher Lee (Saruman in LOTR, Count Dooku in Star Wars, Dracula, etc.)
Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon in Harry Potter)
Jeffrey Jones (Beettlejuice, Amadeus, etc.)
And some more!
A very well done movie that 25 years later still being impressive, frightening and cool!!
I saw this when it originally came out in theaters and I still never tire of watching it. This has to be my favorite Tim Burton-Johnny Depp collaboration. It was so dark, atmospheric and mysterious. I especially found myself getting pulled into the mystery of who was controlling the horseman and why. This also has to be my favorite Danny Elfman score. I loved the music; it was amazing. Christopher Walken was fantastic as the horseman. The chase at the end was awesome. There were two stunt doubles for the horseman; one for the horse-riding scenes and one for the fight scenes. The double for the fight scenes was Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode 1 and Toad in the first X-Men movie.
+10 for the Earthworm Jim shirt. I never realized how many people in this movie, were also in one of the Harry Potter (or Fantastic Beast) movies.
• Movie suggestion for Halloween: Hellraiser (1987) - Saw this when I was about 10 (I couldn't sleep, so I was watching TV while my parents were sleeping). It desensitized me from all other horror movies, lol.
Since we are watching Sleepy Hollow with the headless horseman "Saruman" - Christopher Lee witnessed the last public execution by guillotine.
On 17 June 1939, convicted serial killer Eugen Weidmann was publicly executed by guillotine in Versailles, France after murdering and robbing six people. One of the people in the crowd who witnessed the last public execution by guillotine was a then 17-year-old Christopher Lee, who was stopping briefly in Paris on his way to the French Riviera.
Oh wow, I didn't know that. I do know that the guillotine was called the "state razor" during the French Revolution and was considered the "scientific" means of execution.
The actor who plays the Horseman is Christopher Walken.
Thank you! I looked trough dozens of comments, not finding his name once!
The windmill... flour dust explosion... This is actually a real danger in a miller's work. Greetings from Europe
Well, this was a surprise usually reactors do this movie around October. To answer your question that device that his mother was in is called an Iron Maiden named of course after the greatest heavy metal band of all time, the creator in the middle ages must have been a fan or something :). To that effect you need to react to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
For horror suggestions I recommend:
- Signs (one of the staples for horrors set in cornfields)
- The Prophecy (1995) - for more Christopher Walken.
This is a proper Halloween movie.
Besides his two Batman-Movies, my Fav Movie from Tim Burton. Amazing Athmosphere, outstanding Score and Johnny Depp is really great in it.
Absolutely loved this movie for all the reasons you mentioned AND because of the tone, atmosphere, the setting, the locations, wow. It really fulfills that fantasy of being in a mysterious, spooky, supernatural setting; the woods, fall, a sleepy town, that time period, before technology took the magic away. I have a few suggestions for horror movies especially since Halloween season is almost here. Of course I don't know what you guys've seen other than these reactions so hopefully you haven't seen any of these! These are all excellent movies, and they always do well in reactions:
- It Follows (somewhat scary)
- Tucker & Dale vs Evil (comedy horror)
- The Conjuring, & Sequel (pretty scary)
- IT: Chapter 1 and 2
- A Quiet Place
- Infested (spider horror movie), I suggest you watch it in the original French with english subtitles, the original name is "Vermines"
- The Annabelle movies
- The Witch (2016 with Anya Taylor Joy)
I imagine that what you choose will almost certainly be based on what your patrons say, so hopefully you can present these options and see which ones win out. Honestly of that list my top three would have to be It Follows, The Conjuring movies and Tucker & Dale vs Evil. Any of them you would enjoy. Looking forward to the next reaction!
The man playing the part of the Horseman is Ray Park, he played ''Darth Maul'' in Star Wars: Episode one and Toad in the first X-Men movie.
Speaking of batman, the guy with the mullet you mentioned when they were briefing Icabod Crane is Alfred in Batman.
There is an open air theatre in Chillicothe Ohio which does a native american live play every week during the summer....around halloween they do a creepy play. A few years ago they did Sleepy Hollow, it was phenomenal.
Yes,folks,Messrs Elfman and Burton are longtime collaborators 🎩
Oh damn! Earthworm Jim on t-shirt! 😁 So cool that someone also known this game!
The story, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, is excellent. It's quite funny. A good read if you're interested in the original tale.
He also wrote Rip Van Winkle, The Legend Of The Moor's Legacy and the biography of Christopher Columbus
Classic.
The one piece of merch from this movie that I still have is the Headless Horseman model kit released by Polar Lights. A cool rendition of the Horseman and his horse, the base has the tree on it, the Sleepy Hollow sign and some jack'o lanterns. It also has three or for severed heads that can be placed in the horseman's hand, I used Tim Burton's head on my build-up of the model. The model was re-issued a couple of years and can still be found in hobby shops and online.
Christopher Walken plays "The Hessian":
The term "Hessians" refers to the approximately 30,000 German troops hired by the British to help fight during the American Revolution. They were principally drawn from the German state of Hesse-Cassel, although soldiers from other German states also saw action in America.
this is exactly how I picture the towns in New York/ New England looked like 200 years ago
One of the best Halloween movies ever. Yall are awesome
Love the Earthworm Jim t shirt.
The actress who plays Katrina’s mother played Rita Skeeter the Daily Prophet Newspaper Reporter.
that first meeting where youve got Star Wars Emperor, Harry Potters Mr Dursley, Dumbledoor and Johnny Depp all discussing evil Christopher Walken while Wednesday Adams waits around
As well as Keaton's Alfred, aka the guy with the mullet.
@@staciemiller7465 and dracula
@@rossknowles5608 pretty sure Alfred was in one or two of those Hammer films, too! 😊
And Rita Skeeter
You might be interested to know that there was a whole television series called ‘Sleepy Hollow’. It ran for 4 seasons and put a unique twist on the legend of Ichabod Crane and the headless horseman.
I watched every episode...LOVED IT!!
Beetlejuice, monster squad, van helsing, Evil Dead 2(basically a soft reboot), the conjuring
the scenes in this movie and setting LOOKS like Halloween ..just a great Job
You might like The Wolfman remake with Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins!
Second! I love that movie! Saw it in theaters and Rick Baker did the make-up which made it even better.
I forgot to suggest the movie "Pumpkin Head", starring Lance Hendricson who played Bishop the android robot in Aliens 2. Pumpkin Head is a fairly well put together movie to explain a lore of horror in a backwoods town.
My favorite Tim Burton movie.
I love this movie. This is probably my favorite Tim Burton movie. I saw this in theaters back in the day. My mom and brother saw a different movie and I was this and it was so cool. It was the first time I saw an R Rated movie by myself. The cast is fantastic and the effects are phenomenal. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.
Takes me right back to my childhood. Thanks for sharing your reaction ❤
I know the original evil dead may not have set well with but I promise you part 2 is a totally different movie…The director and lead actor’s intent was to approach it like a three stooges movie. It’s fuggin wacky! 🤪
Hessians were the elite of the elite of the old German army who served the British crown. Of all the soldiers the colonists fought during the American Revolution, the Hessians gave them the toughest fights in hand-to-hand combat and they were instrumental in building the British Empire before that. However, they wore green coats not red and their weapon of choice were either dual hatchets, pole arms. They slaughtered thousands of people without the use of guns or armor. They had a reputation of being extremely barbaric. The real Sleepy Hollow is located in New York state and in the original story Ichabod was a school teacher who crossed paths with the Headless Horseman one evening. If you ever see the original Disney animated movie of Sleepy Hollow there are a lot of Easter eggs in this film that were in that film including the frog by the water croaking Ichabod's name.
OMG! Is that an Earthworm Jim T-shirt?
This movie's halloween vibes are off the charts
You seem to have missed that Dumbledore (Michael Gambon, not Richard Harris) played Baltus Van Tassel. And Christopher Lee (Burgomaster) is retro-famous for all of the horror movies he starred in back in the 70s. He's such a great character actor! Then there's Christopher Walken as the Hessian and Richard Griffiths from several Harry Potter movies as well. It is a stacked cast but I don't think many critics Tim Burton's cinematic style back when this movie was released. It is more of a cult classic now.
Clicky. Watchy. Likey. 😎👍🏼
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters
It is cool that the actor who played the horseman without the head played Darth Maul in the StarWars phantom menace
Ray Park brings such a menacing determination to every move the horseman makes, love it.
the trees are real i saw a behind the scenes interview back when the movie came out they were looking for a scary tree and was about to build one when someone actually found that tree and tim burton decided to use it in the movie
Yeah, it's based on a book but they changed a whole lot of it for the movie. I read The legend of sleepy hollow when I was a kid and loved every minute of it. I also saw the cartoon that was put out by Disney I believe.
You need to watch the classic Disney short The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949) if only for the throwbacks this film gives to it!
Notary Hardenbrook was played by Michael Gough who played Alfred in Batman and Batman Returns. I think checking out the 1958 film, The Horror of Dracula, stars Christopher Lee (Saruman from LoTRs), Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Tarkin from Star Wars) and Michael Gough (Batman and Batman Returns).
The author Washington Irving is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery ( up-state NY ).
Howdy from Texas!
One of my favorite Halloween movies is ParaNorman. Yes it's animated, but the animation is top notch. It's actually 3-D stop motion that used a 3-D Color printer.
It's a really good story with lots of laughs and some really intense situations for an animated movie.
In the same type of genre also is another great animated Halloween movie called Monster House.
You've got Jack Sparrow, Emperor Palpatine, Vernon Dursley, Alfred Pennyworth, Albus Dumbledore, Saruman/Count Dooku/Dracula, Johnny Rico, and Wednesday Addams all in one movie.
Since you're watching this, the film From Hell is another MUST WATCH!!! It came out a year or 2 later. It's a great film!!!
Great reaction to a fantastic film.
One of Tim Burton best movies.
BEETLEJUICE
EDWARD SCISSORHANDS
BIG FISH
NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, are must.
Keep it up 👍
When I first saw this movie, I was on the fence on whether is was a real living person pretending to be the horseman or a magical/demonic force. Then he came out of the tree of the dead, and that answered that! Such a fun movie!
The woods and village are real and are in Buckinghamshire in South England.... I've had a coffee in a cafe there.... there are of course also sets built on soundstages for some shots...
Christopher Lee as you say "Saruman" has been in well over 60 horror movies. So it makes sense why he would be in this one, especially since this movie mirrors a style called "hammer horror". Known for creepy dark atmosphere and vibrant red blood.
Not just a style but a studio.
I live 10 minutes from the real town of sleepy hollow that the legend is based on
Walken's greatest role. Love the teeth.
For good horror sequels to what you've already seen: Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, Poltergeist II, Gremlins 2 The New Batch, Ghostbusters 2. For formative horror that set up the tropes used everywhere: The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Sixth Sense, Scream. Canadian horror masterpieces: Videodrome, Ginger Snaps, Black Christmas, Pontypool, Ravenous. Old old classics: Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Frankenstein. Kaiju? Godzilla (1954), King Kong (1933), Cloverfield, Pacific Rim. Werewolves? An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Dog Soldiers.
"Villainy wears many masks, none so dangerous as the mask of virtue."
Fun Fact: Johnny Depp adopted Goldeneye, the horse that played Gunpowder, his horse in this film, when he heard it was going to be put down.
Action Star Fact: Johnny Depp did all of his own stunts for the final scene where he is dragged by the horse. He had bullet-proof clothing underneath his wardrobe to absorb the friction.
Historical Fact: Washington Irving claimed that Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel in the novel were real people. Ichabod Crane was based on Colonel Ichabod Bennet Crane, who was born in 1787 and fought in the War Of 1812. Washington Irving and Colonel Ichabod Crane had met in 1814 at Fort Pike located on Lake Ontario in Sackets Harbor, New York.
Look for a lot of the cast from Harry Potter in this. Quite a few of these actors were in this .
Next, the Disney "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" version is sooo worth it. 👌👌
This is one of those movies that, while it's not the best movie ever or anything like that it's a fun watch. I saw someone in the comments rec Gremlins 2 and I second that!!!
Nice Earthworm Jim shirt!
Need a list for Horror/Sci-Fi flicks? These are some of my favorites (from my middle aged cinephile eye):
1. (1982) And American Werewolf In London
2. (1988) The Serpent And The Rainbow
3. (1985) Lifeforce
4. (1972) Night of the Lepus
5. (1982) Cat People
6. (1983) The Hunger
7. (1990) Flatliners
8. (1997) Event Horizon
9. (1998) The Faculty
10. (1994) In The Mouth Of Madness
And thanks again for another wonderful review. You guys are rock stars!!!
Great movie to watch at Holloween.
You should watch The Entity from 82, pretty scary! Great reaction as always guys!👍
Great movie!! Oh, 8:19 that's Alfred by the way.
Speaking of Batman, the young man who worked for Depp's character, would make a great Robin. The headless horsemen was Christopher Walken.
The guy with the Mullet:veteran-often horror-brit actor Michael Gough🎩
And Alfred in Batman
"More about Ichabod and the Headless Horseman" the Disney animated one, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (when they did good things) is really good.
Do you like how the movie looks like. Thank Emmanuel Lubezki. A mexican cinematographer. He has made a lot of movies. One of the most impressive is Children of Men.
And of course The Headless Horseman is creepy, Is played by Christopher Walken 🤣🤣
Would also like to add that Christina Ricci is probably the greatest actress on screen, even to this day. Her ability to portray a character that is memorable is amazing, and her vision for a role is known by many a director
She, many times actually, pitched ideas to her directors that actually made her movies and her characters BETTER.
For example:
in the movie "black snake moan" she really wore a 40lb chain around her waist instead of of a lighter prop chain, because she said if she didn't have to pretend it was heavy, it would make it believable and she can focus more on her lines and her characters acting.
She did a movie called "after life" with Liam Neeson. She plays the ghost of a girl who is getting prepared for her own funeral in a mortuary after dying in an accident. 90% of the time she was nude in the film. Which was her idea. Not cause she's weird or to use her nudity entice viewers. But because people getting prepared for burial are often nide while being embalmed and prepped. Which really made the movie that much more creepy and horrifying. She also added a lot of elements to her character as Wednesday in the original Adams Family films, making her character much more grim and bleak than it originally supposed to be
Thanks to reacting to this 90's classic. I watch this every October near Halloween. I remember it being a very fun time at the movies. If you want to check out some more Tim Burton, watch Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and Peewee's Big Adventure. Those are the must-see Burton films, in my opinion.
In England during the plague...they would stack body's on large wheelbarrows- carts and shout bring out your dead to residents.
@Reach-out--Maplenutsreact There was a comment at the start of the movie about using a barrow to transport bodies, this is how it was done many years ago. There's definitely a feel of old London at the start of the movie....they also burned the bodies as in the movie.
This version grew on me. I was dissapointed after seeing it in the theater. It holds up well. The Disney version scared the crap out of me as a child with the horseman throwing the fire pumpkin at the end.
If you do more horror films, especially for October, I suggest getting a night vision camera and watching in the dark. There’s another popular reaction channel that does this for her spooky season, and horror films really should be experienced in a dark room for maximum impact. As for films, everyone has to see The Shining; it’s culturally referenced all of the time and truly a master filmmaker working at the top of his craft. I also think The Dead Zone is another Stephen King adaptation worthy of more views. Finally, if you want a really messed up movie that will cause a lot of psychological problems both during and after viewing, Jacob’s Ladder is a personal favorite and not something I see on other reaction channels often.
Odd tidbit: Ricci and Depp hated being a couple in this movie. Ricci was around him and Winona Ryder a lot growing up, so he pretty much viewed her like a daughter.
Batman: Hush best Batman story ever, I see it behind you.
Is that "Souron" yes but he should have been Gandalf after all Tolkien did promise him the role when the dicussed his new book. He's a direct descendant of the emperor Charlemagne a war hero and an award-winning power metal artist. But he agreed to play Souron because he accepted he was too old to be Gandalph and gave us a wonderful performance anyway. Every moment of his life was extraordinary and well worth finding out about.
Some of my favorite underrated horror/thriller movies: The Ninth Gate (1999), Sphere (1998) and Re-Animator (1985)
hollow man.
Re-animator redefined "giving head".
A recommendation for you The Frighteners with Michael J Fox
Fox had a phenomenal TV series of Sleepy Hollow about 10 years ago. Lasted a few seasons. I would highly recommend it. There is a slight twist to it which I won't spoil but they did a really great job with it. If you loved this movie I feel like you'll probably like the series. I have no idea if you can stream it somewhere though.
F... love this movie, johnny depp, Christopher lee Christopher walken😢😢😢 i miss the 90s and the early 2000s
I grew up watching the animated version by Disney that was always on TV around Halloween (at least where I was from it was), so this was definitely a change from what I was used to seeing, but it was a good movie, regardless.
The bromance between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp runs deep. Great team
Can't forget Danny Elfman. Take either away from this amazing trip, and it's not the same
The headless version of the Horseman in the fight scenes was Ray Park AKA Darth Maul from Star Wars E1. There are several actors here from Star Wars and Harry Potter. In the original story, Crane was the headmaster for the school.
