The perfect Halloween movie! Just as "It's a Wonderful Life" is part of our annual Christmas must watch list, "Sleepy Hollow" is part of our Halloween one.
This movie is so awesome and 1999 was a crazy good year for kino lovers in general! The Mummy, The 13th Warrior, Sleepy Hollow and Payback came out in the same year!! All 4 are so damn good. I saw them all on the big screen! Especially The 13th Warrior is such an underrated masterpiece and one of Antonio Banderas' best roles! You 2 should look into it, its right up your alley! Its one of my favorite movies of all times!
1999 was such a fantastic year for film. Putting aside The Matrix and Fight Club... I remember seeing this film in early november, before my birthday, and going, "Holy shit, this is amazing." It's a really underrated classic.
@@adarael Oh damn, how could I forget The Matrix??? I did see fight club waaaay later, like years, so I didn't have that in mind, but Matrix? Its way too big and also one of my faves to forget about it in such a list! Thanks for reminding me!
I forgot to suggest the movie "Pumpkin Head", starring Lance Hendricson who played Bishop the android robot in Aliens 2. Pumpkin Head is a fairly well put together movie to explain a lore of horror in a backwoods town.
Disney has an iconic animated short of this tale, and the evil tree in this one looks exactly like the drawing of a tree that terrified Ichabod in the Disney version, also the frogs sounding like they say Ichabod is in the Disney version as well.
Magistrate Phillips played in Harry Potter as the character Vernon. Dersley, katrina's dad in this movie also played in harry potter as dumbledore movies 3 through 7 The actress that plays katrina van tassel. Also played in another movie called casper
You've got Jack Sparrow, Emperor Palpatine, Vernon Dursley, Alfred Pennyworth, Albus Dumbledore, Saruman/Count Dooku/Dracula, Johnny Rico, and Wednesday Addams all in one movie.
Ichabod Crane was a real person. He lived in Staten Island, New York in the late 1700’s. Sleepy Hollow is also an actual place in New York. It’s believed the “headless horseman” legend was based on a Hessian soldier who was decapitated by a canonball on Halloween 1776 in New York as well.
Christopher Walken plays "The Hessian": The term "Hessians" refers to the approximately 30,000 German troops hired by the British to help fight during the American Revolution. They were principally drawn from the German state of Hesse-Cassel, although soldiers from other German states also saw action in America.
You also have Dracula/Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), the Emperor in Star Wars (Ian McDiarmid), Alfred from Batman (Michael Gough), Harry Potter's Uncle (Richard Griffiths), and the principal from Ferris Bueller (Jeffrey Jones) - all a TON of great character actors!
@@Electricviolet 2 roles which demonstrate Miranda Richardson's range would be as Queen Elizabeth I or 'Queenie' in BBC's comedy 'Blackadder the Second', from the Blackadder historical comedies and the role of Mrs Arbuthnot, as the neglected, religious & stoic wife in the wonderful 'Enchanted April', set in England and Italy, just after the First World War, for which she and Joan Plowright both got Academy Award nominations for Best Actress.
The reverend in this town is played by Jeffrey Jones who was the principal in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and he was also in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice".
You guys should really check out a John Carpenter film called In The Mouth Of Madness. It's brilliant and highly underrated. Tim Burtons unique style is always so good at capturing that gothic feel and this movie was perfect for that. Another great reaction!
There are no other Ichabod Crane movies per se, but From Hell features Johnny Depp as the inspector trying to stop Jack the Ripper. And the Ninth Gate is also similar with Johnny Depp trying to solve a mystery with a supernatural /demonic backdrop
GREAT reaction guys for this incredible movie!! The casting it´s awesome: Johnny Depp (many well known roles) Christina Ricci (Mermaids, Casper, Wednesday Addams in The Addams, etc.) Christopher Walken (The deer hunter, Pulp Fiction, etc.) Sir Michael Gambon (Dumbledore in Harry Potter) Casper Van Dien (Ricco in Starship Troopers) Ian Mcdiarmid (The Emperor in Star Wars) Christopher Lee (Saruman in LOTR, Count Dooku in Star Wars, Dracula, etc.) Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon in Harry Potter) Jeffrey Jones (Beettlejuice, Amadeus, etc.) And some more! A very well done movie that 25 years later still being impressive, frightening and cool!!
I was crazy about this movie when it came out. Not only because it had Wednesday Addams in it AND the dad from Beetlejuice (or Ferris Bueller's principal), but both Count Dooku and Emperor Palpatine together again? Priceless!! (Alright, alright, they technically didn't share any scenes together and probably didn't see each other on set but I still count it!)
Well, this was a surprise usually reactors do this movie around October. To answer your question that device that his mother was in is called an Iron Maiden named of course after the greatest heavy metal band of all time, the creator in the middle ages must have been a fan or something :). To that effect you need to react to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. For horror suggestions I recommend: - Signs (one of the staples for horrors set in cornfields) - The Prophecy (1995) - for more Christopher Walken.
Fox had a phenomenal TV series of Sleepy Hollow about 10 years ago. Lasted a few seasons. I would highly recommend it. There is a slight twist to it which I won't spoil but they did a really great job with it. If you loved this movie I feel like you'll probably like the series. I have no idea if you can stream it somewhere though.
Absolutely loved this movie for all the reasons you mentioned AND because of the tone, atmosphere, the setting, the locations, wow. It really fulfills that fantasy of being in a mysterious, spooky, supernatural setting; the woods, fall, a sleepy town, that time period, before technology took the magic away. I have a few suggestions for horror movies especially since Halloween season is almost here. Of course I don't know what you guys've seen other than these reactions so hopefully you haven't seen any of these! These are all excellent movies, and they always do well in reactions: - It Follows (somewhat scary) - Tucker & Dale vs Evil (comedy horror) - The Conjuring, & Sequel (pretty scary) - IT: Chapter 1 and 2 - A Quiet Place - Infested (spider horror movie), I suggest you watch it in the original French with english subtitles, the original name is "Vermines" - The Annabelle movies - The Witch (2016 with Anya Taylor Joy) I imagine that what you choose will almost certainly be based on what your patrons say, so hopefully you can present these options and see which ones win out. Honestly of that list my top three would have to be It Follows, The Conjuring movies and Tucker & Dale vs Evil. Any of them you would enjoy. Looking forward to the next reaction!
I saw this when it originally came out in theaters and I still never tire of watching it. This has to be my favorite Tim Burton-Johnny Depp collaboration. It was so dark, atmospheric and mysterious. I especially found myself getting pulled into the mystery of who was controlling the horseman and why. This also has to be my favorite Danny Elfman score. I loved the music; it was amazing. Christopher Walken was fantastic as the horseman. The chase at the end was awesome. There were two stunt doubles for the horseman; one for the horse-riding scenes and one for the fight scenes. The double for the fight scenes was Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode 1 and Toad in the first X-Men movie.
Yeah, it's based on a book but they changed a whole lot of it for the movie. I read The legend of sleepy hollow when I was a kid and loved every minute of it. I also saw the cartoon that was put out by Disney I believe.
Need a list for Horror/Sci-Fi flicks? These are some of my favorites (from my middle aged cinephile eye): 1. (1982) And American Werewolf In London 2. (1988) The Serpent And The Rainbow 3. (1985) Lifeforce 4. (1972) Night of the Lepus 5. (1982) Cat People 6. (1983) The Hunger 7. (1990) Flatliners 8. (1997) Event Horizon 9. (1998) The Faculty 10. (1994) In The Mouth Of Madness And thanks again for another wonderful review. You guys are rock stars!!!
The one piece of merch from this movie that I still have is the Headless Horseman model kit released by Polar Lights. A cool rendition of the Horseman and his horse, the base has the tree on it, the Sleepy Hollow sign and some jack'o lanterns. It also has three or for severed heads that can be placed in the horseman's hand, I used Tim Burton's head on my build-up of the model. The model was re-issued a couple of years and can still be found in hobby shops and online.
When this movie came out, my only knowledge of the story was from a Disney animated movie, "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad". It had two short stories. The first part was based on The Wind in the Willows (1908), the second was based on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1820).
Burton's Sleepy Hollow was his version of a Hammer flick. He even has Christopher Lee and Michael Gough, who were Hammer legends, in this. And I love how Miranda Richardson, who I loved since her role in The Crying Game and in Order of the Phoenix would play such a vicious role.
Another suggestion for the horror genre is 2008 "QUARANTEEN" with Jennifer Carpenter! I"m positive this is gonna give you two nightmares for nights to come!!! =8-O

Sleepy Hollow is located just north of Manhattan via Metro North train station. There are tours in Sleepy Hollow with limited access to the famed cemetery and church. There is a bridge but it no longer has a cover. The actor playing Brom Van Brunt is Casper Van Dien, who is also of Dutch ancestry.

It was the first time I saw an R Rated movie by myself. The cast is fantastic and the effects are phenomenal. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it.
The woods and village are real and are in Buckinghamshire in South England.... I've had a coffee in a cafe there.... there are of course also sets built on soundstages for some shots...

Thank Emmanuel Lubezki. A mexican cinematographer. He has made a lot of movies. One of the most impressive is Children of Men. And of course The Headless Horseman is creepy, Is played by Christopher Walken 🤣🤣
So for the coming up Halloween season I would like to suggest 1968 "Night Of The Living Dead"! Such a great classic and it scared the SH!T outta me when I was a kid!!! =X-D I'm 58 yrs and the therapy is an ongoing process. =8-/
The motif and look of the film is an homage to movies by Hammer Films (aka Hammer horrors), which specialized in gothic horror, remaking classic monsters in their unique and artistic way. Christopher Lee played Dracula in the Hammer Dracula films. They were awesome.
+10 for the Earthworm Jim shirt. I never realized how many people in this movie, were also in one of the Harry Potter (or Fantastic Beast) movies. • Movie suggestion for Halloween: Hellraiser (1987) - Saw this when I was about 10 (I couldn't sleep, so I was watching TV while my parents were sleeping). It desensitized me from all other horror movies, lol.
the trees are real i saw a behind the scenes interview back when the movie came out they were looking for a scary tree and was about to build one when someone actually found that tree and tim burton decided to use it in the movie
For good horror sequels to what you've already seen: Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, Poltergeist II, Gremlins 2 The New Batch, Ghostbusters 2. For formative horror that set up the tropes used everywhere: The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, The Sixth Sense, Scream. Canadian horror masterpieces: Videodrome, Ginger Snaps, Black Christmas, Pontypool, Ravenous. Old old classics: Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Frankenstein. Kaiju? Godzilla (1954), King Kong (1933), Cloverfield, Pacific Rim. Werewolves? An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Dog Soldiers.
This is one of those movies that, while it's not the best movie ever or anything like that it's a fun watch. I saw someone in the comments rec Gremlins 2 and I second that!!!
There is an open air theatre in Chillicothe Ohio which does a native american live play every week during the summer....around halloween they do a creepy play. A few years ago they did Sleepy Hollow, it was phenomenal.
You might be interested to know that there was a whole television series called ‘Sleepy Hollow’. It ran for 4 seasons and put a unique twist on the legend of Ichabod Crane and the headless horseman.
Thanks to reacting to this 90's classic. I watch this every October near Halloween. I remember it being a very fun time at the movies. If you want to check out some more Tim Burton, watch Ed Wood, Mars Attacks, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and Peewee's Big Adventure. Those are the must-see Burton films, in my opinion.

I don't think you guys quite understood what happened to Ichabod's mother... He had such trauma and couldn't remember his childhood because he blocked it out. His mother had been a witch. She was then found out, and sentenced to the iron maiden, which is the scene where he get covered in blood after the maiden opens, and also when he got the scars on his hands when he jumped back startled and slammed his hand on some spike things.
Based on the story by Washington Irving, with some elements lovingly cribbed (with a wink and a nod) from the Disney version, and plenty of original, Burtonesque, takes on the classic tale. Starring... Officer Thomas Hanson, Jr., from 21 Jump Street Count Dracula from Dracula Wednesday Addams, from The Addams Family Albus Dumbledore, from Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire Alfred Pennyworth, from Batman Queen Mab, from Merlin Snake Eyes, from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Senator Palpatine, from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace Dr. Albert S. Meinheimer, from The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear Monsieur Thénardier, from Les Misérables Mayor Lepescu, from Transylvania 6-5000 Johnny Rico, from Starship Troopers Alvin Kurtzweil, MD, from X-Files Vampira, from Ed Wood There are at least four Harry Potter actors, three Star Wars actors, four Alice in Wonderland actors (from at least two different productions), a couple of Hammer Horror actors, and a slew of Shakespearean actors in Sleepy Hollow. The Horseman's tree was, indeed, fake, as was most of the forest. For another movie with a VERY impressive forest built on a sound stage (which burned down, rather spectacularly, mid-production) check out the movie Legend (1985, Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry).
Welcome to the world of Tim Burton! ☺️☺️ He doesn't make a bad movie. Ever. Creepy and macabre is his signature style. But he also does some comedy. Btw, Danny Elfman does the music for all of his movies, and casts Johnny Depp in quite a lot of his movies, as Johnny and Tim work well with each other and understand what the other wants in their roles. Other Tim Burton movies you'll enjoy Nightmare before Christmas Sweeney Todd: the demon barber of fleet street The corpse bride Ms. Peregrine's home for peculiar children Edward scissorhands 9 Peewees big adventure Frankenweenie Alice in wonderland Alice: through the looking glass Dark shadows
@Reach-out--Maplenutsreact There was a comment at the start of the movie about using a barrow to transport bodies, this is how it was done many years ago. There's definitely a feel of old London at the start of the movie....they also burned the bodies as in the movie.
The windmill... flour dust explosion... This is actually a real danger in a miller's work. Greetings from Europe

Depp's pweformance in this is inspired by the character PETER VINCENT IN FRIGHT NIGHT(1985) EFINITELY WATCH THAT.
Love the Earthworm Jim t shirt.
the trees are real i saw a behind the scenes interview back when the movie came out they were looking for a scary tree and was about to build one when someone actually found that tree and tim burton decided to use it in the movie
Loved the reaction. This is such a great movie. The headless Horseman has always been creepy.🤙🏾
OMG! Is that an Earthworm Jim T-shirt?
Thx for the reaction. Nice spooky movie 🍿
Beetlejuice, monster squad, van helsing, Evil Dead 2(basically a soft reboot), the conjuring
The story, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, is excellent. It's quite funny. A good read if you're interested in the original tale.
He also wrote Rip Van Winkle, The Legend Of The Moor's Legacy and the biography of Christopher Columbus
Classic.
Werewolves? An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Dog Soldiers.
such a fun reaction to a very fun movie
You have to watch "Amelie" ❤
this is exactly how I picture the towns in New York/ New England looked like 200 years ago
This is one of those movies that, while it's not the best movie ever or anything like that it's a fun watch. I saw someone in the comments rec Gremlins 2 and I second that!!!
F... love this movie, johnny depp, Christopher lee Christopher walken😢😢😢 i miss the 90s and the early 2000s
Look for a lot of the cast from Harry Potter in this. Quite a few of these actors were in this .
Speaking of batman, the guy with the mullet you mentioned when they were briefing Icabod Crane is Alfred in Batman.
Another somewhat similar to this one would be "The Brothers Grimm (2005)".
I watched every episode...LOVED IT!!
You should watch The Entity from 82, pretty scary! Great reaction as always guys!👍
Great movie!! Oh, 8:19 that's Alfred by the way.
Great movie to watch at Holloween.
Walken's greatest role. Love the teeth.
Theres a Disney animated short(30mns long) of the headless horseman story called The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow from 1949.
I think you mean "There's an AMAZING Disney animated short..."
@@fusiliers European here. There's nothin' amazing about Disney...
Based on the story by Washington Irving, with some elements lovingly cribbed (with a wink and a nod) from the Disney version, and plenty of original, Burtonesque, takes on the classic tale.
Starring...
Officer Thomas Hanson, Jr., from 21 Jump Street
Count Dracula from Dracula
Wednesday Addams, from The Addams Family
Albus Dumbledore, from Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire
Alfred Pennyworth, from Batman
Queen Mab, from Merlin
Snake Eyes, from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Senator Palpatine, from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Dr. Albert S. Meinheimer, from The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear
Monsieur Thénardier, from Les Misérables
Mayor Lepescu, from Transylvania 6-5000
Johnny Rico, from Starship Troopers
Alvin Kurtzweil, MD, from X-Files
Vampira, from Ed Wood
There are at least four Harry Potter actors, three Star Wars actors, four Alice in Wonderland actors (from at least two different productions), a couple of Hammer Horror actors, and a slew of Shakespearean actors in Sleepy Hollow.
The Horseman's tree was, indeed, fake, as was most of the forest. For another movie with a VERY impressive forest built on a sound stage (which burned down, rather spectacularly, mid-production) check out the movie Legend (1985, Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry).
The author Washington Irving is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery ( up-state NY ).
I live 10 minutes from the real town of sleepy hollow that the legend is based on
Nice Earthworm Jim shirt!
Other Tim Burton movies you'll enjoy
Nightmare before Christmas
Sweeney Todd: the demon barber of fleet street
The corpse bride
Ms. Peregrine's home for peculiar children
Edward scissorhands
9
Peewees big adventure
Frankenweenie
Alice in wonderland
Alice: through the looking glass
Dark shadows
In England during the plague...they would stack body's on large wheelbarrows- carts and shout bring out your dead to residents.
@Reach-out--Maplenutsreact There was a comment at the start of the movie about using a barrow to transport bodies, this is how it was done many years ago. There's definitely a feel of old London at the start of the movie....they also burned the bodies as in the movie.
Love love LOVE! this movie ❤
