Most singers are afraid to cover this song as it requires tremendous vocal range, power, and subtlety. Kudos to Brandi Carlile for pulling it off with flying colors.
Riley Lawson the technical definition is something about a rapid variation in pitch to give a rich tone... it’s a metaphorical hug she gives you hahaha 0:36
I love the slow vibrato she has. I usually hear older singers do it, like Willie Nelson, but her youthful voice with this technique gives her voice a depth and kind of wisdom that gives me chills. So beautiful.
My interpretation, but ‘I am as constant as the northern star’ is a quote from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, but the guy in the song mildly misquoted it - ‘a northern star’ instead of ‘the northern star’ - which I think is why the narrator of the song calls him out for his pretentiousness. She’s such a badass.
I've always told my wife that I'm not in love with Brandi....I'm deeply, thoroughly, completely in love with her voice. Nearly 15 years after I was introduced to her first studio album, and the butterflies are still fluttering in my stomach, my heart thrums with excitement, and I'm filled with pure joy every time she starts to sing. My wife- unfortunately for me- also happens to have a crush on Brandi herself....but I can't fault her for that, now can I?
I am 68 y/o and never thought I would find another singer that touched me like Janis did and now I'm thinking I still have places that haven't been touched before deep in my soul

Brandi got to perform this song to Joni on her 75th birthday ~10 weeks later at Disney Hall in LA, as a celebration of Joni's birthday including many others. The performances were released commercially in CD and a more complete DVD, likely posted if you search.
I've never heard any cover coming remotely close to Joni Mitchell's original but here we are. Not that you can really compare Brandi Carlile to Joni. Two separate kinds of talent but WOW. Mind blown.
I had (sorry!) never heard this song before hearing her in concert in Minneapolis in November 2018. And now I'm completely obsessed. Can't believe what she does with her voice. (And kudos to her strings, as well.)
My two favorite female singers: Joni Mitchell (first and foremost) and Brandi Carlile. Imagine my joy to find Brandi singing a cover of one of my very favorite Joni Mitchell songs!

My first concert ever was heart only two years ago. And she was there with them.. she was better than Heart and I LOVE heart. It was the first I’d heard of her. A case of you is my favorite song she started singing this and I just started CRYING .. and it still makes me tear up. It’s flawless.
The only cover of this Joni classic that I liked before hearing this version was the one that Prince did. This is brilliant. Listen to Prince's version if you've never heard it OR James Blake.

She’s a vocal powerhouse (not to mention a writing powerhouse). Not sure there’s a woman who’s better.
If you hear Brandi’s vibrato and your soul doesn’t feel like spring, you’re not human.

Amazing talent, I'm sure Joni would love this version.
Kathleen Blackburn she sang this at Joni's 75th Birthday.

Incredible vocal performance by Brandi. She has come a long way, and I love this cover. Keep growing, girl, that voice is a weapon!
She's one of the Best Female voices in History. Love you Brandi Carlile.
She makes me miss Joni just a little bit less. Love both. Beautiful, just beautiful.
The most perfect pop song of all time. And Brandi more than does it justice.
