I got 5 years watchin youtube bricklaying work but YOU ARE NUMBER ONE , YOU REALLY HELP PEOPLE ,GOD BLESS YOU!
I AM GOING TO STUDY THIS, THIS IS A STARTING POINT IN BUILDING MY HOUSE, THAT I WANT TO OVERSEE, GREAT VIDEO KEEP THEM COMING❗❗👌👌👍👍
So awesome. This is exactly how I learned to layout a stemwall but we didn’t haven’t the laser with tone so we used an optical. I remember coming onto a new crew shortly after moving to Cali and they were completely lost on this technique so they were taking 2-3 days just to layout a foundation using torpedoes, batter boards and a string. I took the foreman’s tape, cut it off at 24 inches, used a pair of Zip ties to hold it to a 2ft level and pulled my transit from the trunk of my car and we proceeded to find the low point, marked it all out after measuring the diagonals and runs from the lowest corner, then I had them set the foundation stakes 8 inches outside the corners so we could pull line, spray the dig lines for the 24” bucket. We had the trenches dug and corner pins in before lunch! I got a 2$/hr raise out of that! And I got to sit on my cooler looking through the transit for all of our builds after that! Good on y’all and keep up the good work!
ATTA' Boy!
Probably the best ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU on building a shed is hardly found ever . And Ryan takes the mystery out of different types of foundation options, etc. He even shows how to build shed with different designs. Very comprehensive, covering different roofing materials, siding, etc.
Wondering if I’m the only one watching this because I’m trying to apply for construction jobs ??
Nope!
Nope I’m on the job looking at plans and don’t know how to read them 😂
Nope . I’ve framed countless homes and I still don’t miss a video
Not at all 😊
We just drove pieces of rebar into the inside of the trench and shot the top of the rebar with the transit, then we would pull string from one piece to the other and tighten string and drive rebar to string,
Very simple, yet methodical procedure to complete a very crucial pet of the build. I’d recommend that you switch from using a nylon long tape to the metal ones. The nylon tapes have the tendency to stretch preventing you from getting a true accurate measurement. Love your videos lads!! Keep up the great work out there.
Plot twist when he said “ looks good nothing wrong with that he was actually just trying to keep ur mood up 😂😅 jk amazing to have a dad like urs great work and very helpful video. As a minority apprentice carpenter I want to be the best in my field. Thanks for this very helpful
Great videos. Question. You mention "when J-bars are tied in from the steel in the footer". Where can I learn about what this means? Do you have a video on installing the rebar for the footer?
You do a great job explaining the process and seem like a perfectionist like me, so please, only use a steel tape when doing any lay-out work. Cheers!
This is why your math teacher said to pay attention in class.🤓
🚧The Pythagorean theorem is very important in construction boys and girls.🚧🏠
No - and in laying out soccer fields 😃
3,4,5 rule also works with multiples of 3,4,5. (6,8,10), (12,16,20)
@@shawnr771 that's how I've always remembered it. Pythagorean theorem is so universal.
@@ManuelVCano yep.
@@shawnr771 The 3,4,5 rule works BCZ of the Pythagorean Theorem not instead of it.
3² + 4² = 5²
9 + 16 = 25
🤜🤛
Good job.
Plz do u have any video on setting out of foundation using the batten board?
What is a corner stone , how relevant is it to moden construction
EXCELENTE VIDEO, ME GUSTA
Oh OK wow Rand Perkins in the flash ha ha I haven’t seen him in Good night over 10 years
The best video I’ve watched on squaring a foundation ✊....thank you guys
Yes i agree on tgat and i watched afew
What the tool called that you used to poke the soil. I'm assuming to test soil compression?
Your dad looks like the coolest dude going!!! Rock in!!!!🙌🏼🤘
I mean I figure the labor cost for getting it perfectly flat far exceeds the cost of concrete for having deep spots...
Always use steel tape to layout a foundation.
Why?
It won’t stretch and your measurements will be accurate.
Yep. Same make and model to be safe.
Great video! What program do you use for you design layouts?
Which app did you use to design the plan?
I’m learning layout and studying it and thank you for the awesome help. I took down notes for the future!!!
Looking forward to the laser level video
In my experience on the commercial side of things a set of
Legs for your laser level is worth it and much more stable than having it sit on something, just a thought! Love your videos
Thanks Sam👍... funny thing I was using my laser stand for the camera! Also I like setting the laser low for grade stakes.
At 3:30 regarding your reference stakes, isn't that really what the precisely-located nails on the batter boards do? I do like my stakes a bit further back and well out of the way of the machinery.
Loving the videos I do the very same thing in Dublin Ireland and its mutch of the same just more and deeper but thanks for taking the time to share this with us all 🧱👷♂️⚒👍
@Hello Mark how are you doing?
Hey mate love your videos. Quick question. Why not just measure 3 feet further for the reference pins the first time. Instead of resetting 3 feet off? You could still draw 3 feet outside on your plans and use Pythagorean’s T to do the same?
Thanks... and yes that would work great as long as you don’t get confused somewhere in the process and forget to add the 3 ft on one of the lines! 👍 smart
I like laying out the out side of wall cause that’s the end product. I’m sure that’s what the man in video did as well.
Awesome to see your dad in a video! Looks like his work has paid off :P
what software did you use to design the layout of the house? cad?
Are your framers able to build off your floor plans, or do you have to get additional structural framing plans from an engineer?
Certainly has to be stamped by an engineer

A tad scary standing on the edge of that wall with no shoring.A guy died on a job site I was working on where they were digging a pool. Only 6' of soil dislodged and smothered him.
We're you in Canada today?
I saw a truck with brothers on it bit couldnt read the rest
Looks like you discovered how to edit slow motion in this video haha
You're the guys and keep doing that great job now um a trade man because of your videos and say thanks to Grandpa too
Good video especially like the pump truck blow out at the end
Yes . What was that thingy you used to poke holes or marks in the dirt and why you were doing that. Thanks
Soil Probe for ground bearing check... if the point sinks... then so will your house! ;)

And if your point sinks then what would you do?
Were you using your Stiletto to drive does pieces of rebar into the ground?
Haha... yep. Non of my tools get babied!
These vids are about as real you can get. They don’t skip steps. This is tried and true. Brings back 30 yrs ago when I first saw this process. Keep up the good work guys You need to up that pump hose size huh.
Someone, at what time in the video does he show how to get the string level?
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing❤
Same old red clay everywhere!
Awesome seeing someone who cherishes their parent bro much respect 🙌
I want to build my own home. No construction experience, I went to college to be a teacher. I was interested in learning to prep the foundation for a rancher or cape cod home. Are there home construction trade schools for older adults?
sorry, had to tune out as you said "rebar will make you super dirty, so where gloves." Do construction much?
Its great work capable for learning
But in2021 you should have a total station
What program did you use to design the house ?
How does 8 inches from the ouside and 16 from the inside center the wall over the 2 foot footing? 2x6 thickness + 1/2 drywall + 1/2 sheathing is only 6.5 inches. Shouldn't it be 8 or am I missing something?
Did you do another video to show how you establish the initial starting point for the first corner and establish the second point for setting up your 90 degrees?
thanks you. i wish you can speak slowly, because i want to stuty english by your chanel
:0 in Romania we dig 30-40 inch footings for a two story house...
Wear gloves, but not to prevent dorty hands, but to help prevent tetanus 😂.
Have you ever tried water in a clear vinyl tubing to keep level across big spans?
İ need to lift one corner of the house then put some support underneath the footing. My question is, after lifting up the house, how am l supposed to fill the gap between footing and soil? Or it should be ok just the way it is? Can you guys gimme some ideas please thank you.
Can you do a video on how you design a house on your computer?
And what program you use.
Yes please
I would love to watch that as well!
I was about to ask the same question, id like to know what computer software
Hey everyone! He told me in an earlier comment that he uses Chief Architect Home Designer Pro. We actually bought it last month and I've been learning how to use it. So far, I love it! Almost have our whole cabin designed.
Much easier using a total station I could lay that out in 10 minutes but once in a while going old school never hurts
They probably don’t build enough homes in a year to make total station worth it. Very expensive.
Love it, but you could have mentioned water levels..
You guys don’t have a reference point or do you just lay it based on your hole
I heard very good opinions about the Stodoys plans.
Really had to mention Pythagorean’s theory 😂😂👌👌that was my funniest part
Great job.
Been in the commercial side of construction for 30 + years. This is a simple way to lay out a foundation that I've used for years. Awesome to still see old school work.
Wait, I recognize those plans.
Well your dad might be old, but im much older at 87.
I started in the home building industry in the mid 50s.
So with your second set of pins you are actually mimicking what a batter board does.
We as a rule didnt use batter boards either for staking out the homes we built.
We simply used 2x4 stakes with a nail driven in them for the wall lines.
But we used a 10’ off set on the stakes to allow for more distance for the excavating equipment without disturbing the stakes.
We would establish an exact corner first by measuring from the property lines.
We would then set up a very good surveyor type transit over a nail in the top of that stake by hanging a plumb bob from the transit.
We would then turn 90s with the transit, which would give us all but one corner location, again setting the stakes 10’ out from the actual corner.
The final corner would be found by pulling a tape from the others.
If there were offsets in the house requiring more than one stake, then we would use a standard batter board setup for that which allows for more nails for the different wall lines.
With a good helper i could stake out several large houses in a day.
Without permanent stakes set back from the wall lines by enough distance, you will lose them during the excavation process, requiring more stake out time to reestablish the wall lines for the foundation after the footings are poured.
Ever try the 3-4-5 square up method, measure 3' from corner, in other direction, measure 4' take tape across each point, if it's 5' your on the money Sqr.
No KEY in footings for retaining wall, looks to be 5 - 6 feet high on sandy soil. Any concerns about liquidfication effect?
Plus you didn't explain where or how you choose Finished Floor Elevation
Thanks for sharing
How's the $100 Hammer working out for ya.
The 3-4-5 method is the Pythagorean Therom
@@ykciR yes it is, just shorter and easy to remember 😁
3-4-5 is good for smaller stuff, and especially when you are squaring up lumber. Try to square up string working by yourself and it will become obvious why you pull the diagonal at the corner. When you pull the diagonal, you don’t care what’s in between corners on a straight run, since when you pull the string tight corner to corner it will be straight in between. So checking diagonal is best. Also you can scale up your 3-4-5, and go 6-8-10 and so on. And of course this is the Pythagorean theorem simplified. Also get the construction master 5 app for your phone from Calculated Industries. You can figure diagonals in feet and inches, with a couple keystrokes, and not have to figure a^2+b^2=c^2 on a regular calculator in decimal feet.
Love your video! Nice respect to Dad!
sir correct me if im wrong. so your laser was set at 12" above grade,at your lowest point you got 16" so your lowest point was 4"below the top of the footing, the 12" inches that your laser is set at plus the 4" from you low point is 16" to reach the 12" footing below grade you would need to add 8" more for a total of 24". wich is what you adjusted your marker to plus 8" Right?
Often wondered. If someone wanted a block foundation that is exactly 25’x60’ (outside corners) would that interfere with the block size? So that you understand what I’m asking, 25’ = 300” / 300” divided by 16” = 19.75 not quite a full block. Or is this a non-issue for a good block layer? Please help so I can sleep at night. Thanks, love the videos!
Not an issue. Put a 3/4 in off your corner. Often buildings are not modular and you have to make the block and brick fit the dimensions.
Don’t forget that there is a mortar joint between each block!!!
What's your secret designing software? Chief Architect?
sir correct me if im wrong. so your laser was set at 12" above grade,at your lowest point you got 16" so your lowest point was 4"below the top of the footing, the 12" inches that your laser is set at plus the 4" from you low point is 16" to reach the 12" footing below grade you would need to add 8" more for a total of 24". wich is what you adjusted your marker to plus 8" Right?
When you pull the tape measure off the string line to make the footer 2’ wide. How do you know you’re pulling off square. Or does it not really matter?
Another option is to set up batter boards to give you your foundation location.
Batter boards would be much more reliable
Mr. Perkins, between 5:09 and 5:19 you mention two depths. One 8" below and the other 12" below bottom. Are these code depth, or where do those depths come from? Is that bottom, top of middle of footer? I'm a laying my own foundation in FL. Thanks in advance
What would have been nice is if when you were explaining the setting, show it in a drawing (pen and paper) because looking at the video alone I got lost
*not a home builder, don't beat me up over it. @ 7:15 what was that tool used for?

Best video ever. How many rebars would you need for an area 24" widex 16" thick and 6 foot long?
Thank you
Please just say footing or footings.
😑
Hi Guys, What laser level did you use?
I bought Woodglut once and now I have lifetime access to thousands of woodworking projects.
What computer software do you use to draw plans? Anybody have a good suggestion on building pools or pool enclosures/ framin
I've dug plenty of footings for foundations but we've always used batter boards and a transit, but how was it done without a transit
Man… the foundation is pretty important I don’t want to screw this up. 😅
Be Aware, the foundation is that portion of the earths crust which the building is placed on. The footings are that portion of a building that is designed and placed upon the foundation to support the load above. There are many different types of foundation materials and the footings are designed accordingly to suit the safe bearing value of different materials Fred
Wow your dad looks cool
Dad is looking good, hope you all staying safe during this tuff times.🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼
It seems weird. Here in Illinois we did the grade to the bottom of the footing the whole thing. Then stone with 3/4 stone and drain tile usually the outside. Now we do radon vents inside the pad it makes it easier if there are columns in the middle
@Hello Robert how are you doing?
I’m tired just watching
Footing not footer , just saying, and old school that’s for sure every time, great jobs mate .
🤣🤣🤣🤣😅🙀😅🤣🤣 ""that Introduction""
What app are you using for that calculator you were using on your phone in thr video
May i know, what is the receiver you clip on that water balance? Any reference link so that i can have the review?
How did you determine the rebar locations so they fall between the web of the block?
Awesome bud . You do great job of making something complicated look simple. Essentially you drove the rebar into proper height to level the footing . Any benefit using that method over Using grade pegs ?
What is the spacing used for the j-bar?
4 ft for the codes on this project
Could you explain more in depth how to set up a starting point of a footing/corner
YOU COULD SET THE 1ST COURSE OF BLOCK WET AND SAVE SOME WORK. ITS JUST AS EASY AS YOU POUR.
the law of cosines....the double angle formula on and on
sin on the Y
Cos on the X
Nice how I wish to join you people over there please keep up dating
Do I have to go to school for this?
Do you later hand dig a french drain trench around the footer's perimeter?
