    Lilo's characterization is so damn good. Her moments of morbidity, maturity and artistry can come from her backstory as a kid who lost her parents and found outlets to express her grief. Even her early giving a sandwich to a fish is connected to it. And her taking of pictures? It's a way to turn around how tourists take pictures of native Hawaiians like they're zoo animals.
    Her "quirky" nature isn't "Oh, gee, I'm so clumsy and overly talkative" like with modern Disney princesses. Instead, Lilo's quirkiness manifests as honestly weird habits and statements, and it comes from real places. I love it.

      there was a scene early on after the hula school were lilo uses her selfmade doll as a way to connect to the girl-gang and express her sadness. When the laugh her off she throws it on the ground in frustration and leaves... only to come back later to pick it up and console it (as a represnetation of herself)
      This scene hits so hard

      yeah i love the way Lilo's characterized, she feels much more like a real kid than a lot of other fictional representations of kids and there's a lot of little details that seem like quirkyness but are actually responses to her experiences and struggles

      And that theory that she gives sandwiches to Pudge The Fish as a tribute because he can "control the weather" and the one day she didn't was the day her parents went for a drive in a storm and died is so heartbreaking.

    To clear up the Elvis thing. Elvis made his most popular movie in Hawaii and it was especially a huge hit on the islands. Which also became the highest-rated special that year.

    the reason why Lilo says that the fish controls the weather is because her parents would take her every week to feed the fish until one day Lilo forgot and later that night, her parents died in a storm. So she genuinely believes that if she forgets to feed Pudge again, he will create another storm and potentially kill more people. Also I think there is a deleted scene that explains why Lilo takes pictures of the tourists. It’s because the tourists treat her, a Hawaiian native, like an attraction when visiting. So she treats them how they’ve treated her. Got these from others

    The fact that David was so in love with Nani and helped look after Lilo and was so patient and understanding as to why Nani cannot date him yet made him husband material. • @joliealbury6936
    @joliealbury6936 5 місяців тому +385

    I like that they leave Lilo's reason for feeding Pudge entirely up to subtext. A modern Disney movie would probably have her come right out and say "Pudge caused the storm that killed my parents so I give him sandwiches to keep him happy so he doesn't do that again," but here they just have her claim he controls the weather like it's just one of those weird beliefs little kids often have, and later on, when she tells Stitch about her parents, all she says that's vaguely in relation to Pudge is that it was raining that day. You're probably not even supposed to remember Pudge exists or why Lilo feeds him by that point, but if you did, it makes all the pieces fall right into place for you.

    As someone who has spent my life living in Hawaii there is a lot of love and care about the state that has been put into this movie but what always was the most powerful to me was Nani singing Aloha Oe when she was saying goodbye to Lilo. For those unaware that song was written by the last monarch of Hawaii Queen Lili'uokalani as she was under house arrest from the United States government in order to force her to effectively sign over her country to them. It was a mournful farewell to her country and that context with her sister likely going to be taken by that very same government is heart breaking.

Like ig the arcs and stuff could be considered done before but it's an entirely original movie top to bottom, it feels more like pixar than disney.

The Movie (2003), Lilo and Stitch: The Series (2003-2006), Leroy and Stitch (a sequel to the series, 2006).

    When they announced the live-action remake (which is still happening btw) I was hardcore betting on Auli’i Carvahlio (apologies for butchering her last name) to play Nani because I felt it made the most sense; after all, a Polynesian-themed Disney movie is the only reason she even has a career, and she’s old enough to play the character without it seeming weird, so it could’ve been the best casting of any of these remakes. Alas, Disney did not even consider her. Good thing Chris Sanders will still voice Stitch, though
