Bang on the money there mate. You’d be surprised how many hunters go off the packet for there bullet speed etc. Not knowing any better not even firing a shot at those distances to see the drop for there rifle. Just got me a 30-06 168grain Berger’s hit hard. South Island red stag this roar hopefully 👍
Agree with your sentiment regarding the therapeutic benefits of reloading. Being a Sydney-based, city professional with a young family, I only get out hunting a couple of times a year. I find sitting over the reloading bench and watching these videos a form of escapism, with the detailed nature of reloading appealing to my form of OCD in a way I'm sure you understand. As always, thanks for taking the time to share with us your adventures. Also take a look at the Federal Trophy Bonded Tipped projectiles - best sambar killer i'm come across. Very accurate and deadly at all ranges
Thanks Andrew, will check out the Federal TBTs! I am in the same boat as you now until Q3 where I'll try get over for another backpack hunt! Thanks for watching and for the kind words
Reloading can certainly be therapeutic. It is often hard not to let the mind wander back to hunts gone by and those upcoming adventures. Spoilt for choice with all those projectiles mate. I think you have it covered 👍
Hi Jamie Thanks for the great vids Your methodical nature to all aspects of hunting Sambar is proven to be extremely successful kudos to you. Confidence in a particular load is paramount Any of the modern high bc bonded or monolithic bullets will work well at long range as long as they are placed well For me I keep it simple just use one load for every application confident whatever the scenario or conditions the bullet will perform if well placed Cheers
Hi Ben, thanks for watching and for the comment! I totally agree with keeping it simple and sticking to a load that is trialled and has delivered! I am the first to admit I overthink things and (I'm hoping that) once I have played around like a mad scientist with different loads for the 30-06 that I will eventually arrive at the one or two recipes lol, but it's so fun playing around with fire 🤣
How have you gone with the Barnes, happy with them? I run 165s in my 300WM for Sambar and they've been great. I suggested to a mate that he consider factory loaded 168s for his 30-06, the only thing I was unsure about was whether or not they would be going fast enough for adequate expansion, the general consenus seems to be that they do like speed.
Hi Albert I never got a good group out of the barnes and so I haven't progressed further . Mainly due to poor time availability to keep tweaking loads and going back to range. I did however find a good group with the 168g Berger but did not take them on sambar for fear of being too light. So I went back to Sierra 200g gamekings on my last backpack hunt . Although never pulled trigger. I hope to make again this year for a bush hunt, toying up the 220g Sierra or the compound bow
@@MountainMan_NZ I've got mate a mate that swears by Berger's in his .338 wildcat for long range application. Not sure about how they would perform in your config. Can't fault Gamekings from what I have seen👍
Yeah ok, well from what Andy told me it sounded like the Bergers did the job on his first sambar stag on our October 2018 backpack hunt. Dumped him on the spot with a standard chest shot
@mountainmanhuntingfilms I struggled to get good groups with ttsx until I seated them deep, so all the rings are inside the neck of the case and you can just see the edge of the last ring at the top of the neck of the case, I have heard from a few people having trouble with them that they like a jump
Howdy Jamie, I love ya passion and drive. Like you I love my 30-06 for all things deer. You’ve got a nice bag of mixed lollies there.I’ve also got some TTSX for my 06 to try out this year. Cheers, Rob.
Yes I feel like a magpie in a hunting and fishing shop... just so many flashy colours and trinkets!! Thanks for watching Rob, be keen know how your experience goes too
Good to see you’re leaning towards lead free hunting. For meat hunting...... why wouldn’t you. Not to mention lead spraying through nature. It’s a new brainer for me.
Interesting perspective - I’m less concerned about eating deer meat from one or two lead bullets but think there is merit in using steel shot instead or lead shot for shotguns when duck shooting. Either way, wild game just tastes better irrespective of how it is brought home to the table 😊
Thanks again I was hand loading for a 30 06 Sako fin light. Having no info of the Sako action on hand so I thought you would be a good bloke to ask. I’m picking the gun up later in the week and wanted to prepare some loads So far I’m going to start with 178g eldx hornady ADI 57 g 2209 And was looking for a seating depth that still was good for the bullet to fit in the magazine. I made one with with the amount 57g and it’s 85.74 mm in length it’s got a little space in in the case but un shore how it will measure up to the lance. Will see in due course. Any how have you be told or read about using magnum primers
No dramas, I've used the 178g ELDX in factory ammo and they shot really well 0.75" group. I'd like to hand load some. I load most of my projectiles except barnes bullets just shy of my magazine length so I have no feed or ejection issues. Cheers
I follow your reloading with interest as I have a 30-06 myself.never tried Barnes always been a Hornady fan never lost an animal I like the sst 165 grain.keen to get among the Sambar again this year to.thanks for your vids
Thanks Wilber I have also previously been a big fan of the flat based hornady soft points (in 2506 cal) and found the flat based 180g hornady round noses to shoot well. Keen to get my hands on the 178g hornady ELDX as well. Fingers crossed the barnes load performs well!
MountainMan HuntingFilms yes funny how you say the flat base ones perform better in both 06’s of yours I’ve never tried them always used boat tails, food for thought.whats your opinion on the ADI powder ??
@@wilberthreehundred6402 I've actually never tried other powder types to know any better. And thats mainly been cos the ADI powders are so readily available and I've probably been too impatient to order it in. What Powder do you use?
MountainMan HuntingFilms I’ve always liked Win760 it mitres well but can be a pain in the butt to get at times. It seems to work with nearly all bullet weights, working on a load at the mo for the 190 grain Hornady for close up on Sambar 52.3gns-53gns should work ok out to 200yds
Cheers brother! Yes the 180g Nosler accubonds were what I first started out with in the 30-06 for moderate distances. Until I found the 220g Sierra round noses they shot the best but are only suitable as a bush bullet. Perfect for bush stalking. I'm hoping the barnes will deliver the energy up close and out to moderate distances (300-400y)
Cheers Reece! If only I had a work bench in the garage then i could get some music going without waking up the kids or disturbing the neighbours 🤣. Good time to zone out though 👍
Hi Jake, not sure what you mean but if you're referring to the price tag on the packets of projectiles they are how much they cost in AUD to buy locally here in WA. I usually buy from a local reloading store in Welshpool, Perth. Thanks for watching
MountainMan Hunting Films I mean that’s VERY EXPENSIVE. If there aren’t laws against it I imagine you could have them shipped from the states and still save a lot of money
What are those Barnes bullets costing you? CheaperThanDirt has the Barnes 165gr .308 TTSX BT for $48.52 for a box of fifty. And the 175gr LRX .308 with a BC of .508 are $51.14.
Just found your channel and subscribed. Great videos! Cheers from North Carolina, USA!
Cheers Alan - welcome 🙏🙌

Hay mate can you please tell me the powder you’re using and the amount on the round noses 220 grain or 200 g
220g sierra round nose uses 53g of AR2209 powder.
200g Sierra Game king uses 52.7g of AR2209 powder.
Thanks mate
Can you please tell me your overall bullet length once seated your 180 grain in thanks
