It’s definitely a film that would play better if you’re already familiar with his body of work. I’d personally recommend going chronologically through his filmography, starting off with Pickpocket to get acclimated. Thanks for watching!

A beautiful and brilliant video essay and summary of the year. I haven't yet seem many of these. Sadly, Anora has been my biggest disappointment of the year; maybe it is unreasonable to expect something as great as Baker's previous three. I can't wait to see Bird, The Beast, The Brutalist and All We Imagine As Light 👍
Bummer Anora didn’t work for you, but I do agree with you in that the Tangerine-Florida Project-Red Rocket run is a special one. It’s really just so great to see him finally get all this mainstream acclaim after years of making tremendous films.
Janet Olanet was cute. That's about all I can say. Lots of 'cute coming of age films. This is just another one. Don't remember one scene and saw it only a few weeks ago. As far as The Challengers, it's a pretty lady and two cute guys making out. Great! So original. Bravo. 2024 was one of the best horror years and overall so many good films. I have seen about 25 films from the year and most have been in the 7-9 range in terms of score so I'm pleased. For horror fans definitely see: omen, late night with the devil, heretic, smile 2, long legs, speak no evil, alien.
Well done on providing a great list. Mine’s not the same - I rated ‘Love Lies Bleeding’ as my #1 of the year, whereas you didn’t feature it at all - but all that you included (that I’ve seen) are very worthy inclusions.
I think 'Bird' might be my film of the year (even though i'm about done with Keoghan), close with 'la bete', Léa Seydoux is one of the most underrated actesses of this generation, she can do anything, 'le deuxième acte' for example. Also Aggro Drift. 'Evil does not exist' was beautiful in its intensity and calmness in the adversity of blunt evil. Loved 'I saw the tv glow', loved 'challengers', 'Anora' was good fun and still deeply heartfelt, Mikey Madiso steals every shot and scene.Really looking forward to seeing 'the brutalist' and till have to see 'Janet planet'. Thanks for reminding me about 'la chimera' and turning me towards Zhangke, new for me. Bas Devos' made an absolutely stunning movie and i'm happy to hear you praise a fellow Belgian and colleague at the art school where i work. I saw 'Toxic' by Saulė Bliuvaitė at our local filmfestival, which also ranks pretty high for me this year. Nerding out, sorry, not sorry, that's what the joy of movies is. Thank you.
Thank YOU for watching! Glad to find someone else who has Bird high up on their list…seems to have been flying under way too many people’s radar. And so cool that Bas Devos is a colleague of yours, he is a brilliant artist! I cannot wait to watch Toxic, heard great things about it out of Locarno (I believe?) and it seems right up my alley.

I agree with your list here -- great choices, except for Anora. The "Cinderella meets wealthy suitor/prince trope" has been done to death in so many movies, especially in many independent European and Asian cinema but Hollywood audiences seem to be way behind; this is just a grittier Pretty Woman version which is why it's getting so much buzz. Anora seems dated if we are to consider all other movies before it. Here are some variations of this type of movie: Pretty Woman (1990) Moulin Rouge! (2001) Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) Like Someone in Love (2012) The Housemaid (2010) Belle de Jour (1967) The Lover (1992) The Girlfriend Experience (2009) The Duchess (2008) Cold War (2018) Madame Bovary (1857) Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1958) Anna Karenina (1877) Lilya 4-Ever (2002) Morvern Callar (2002) and yes, Cinderella! This movie reminds me of how Scorsese adapted the Hong Kong thriller, Infernal Affairs and called it The Departed. It's the same movie, just repackaged for a Hollywood audience.
- Anora - Wicked - The Wild Robot - Hundreds of Beavers - Furiosa - The Brutalist - Conclave - Challengers - Nosferatu - The Substance - Dune Part 2 - My Old Ass - The Seed of the Sacred Fig - A Real Pain - The Count of Monte Cristo - All We Imagine as Light

Thanks for sharing. So interesting seeing how wildly different everyone’s lists can be. Not a single one is even remotely close to being similar to another. Love to see it!
What makes you think most of these titles won’t show up on the majority of year end lists?? Please😅Anora, Nickle Boys, The Brutalist, Challengers, Sing Sing etc. all solid and obvious picks.
I remember when cinema commentary youtube was dominated by 99% english speaking movies and to watch "foreign films" was considered an exotic thing. I'm so glad we are moving away from that, as even that vocabulary has left a bad taste in my mouth for how US centred it is. Amazing stories and pictures exist everywhere, and to be able to enjoy such a variety of perspectives and lives through film is one of the greatest gifts of our time. To not take full advantage of it would be such a waste.
My Top Ten of 2024: 10. The Order (8/10) 9. The End (8/10) 8. Dune: Part Two (8/10) 7. History of Souleymane (8/10) 6. Christspiracy (9/10) 5. Oddity (9/10) 4. The Devil’s Bath (9/10) 3. Monkey Man (10/10) 2. Longlegs (10/10) 1. Kinds of Kindness (10/10) Yet to see: Nosferatu, The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing
I look forward to seeing "Here," the film mentioned here. I saw "Here," the RoObert Zemekis film, and it was a one-trick pony that had me grinding my teeth.
... narration could be slightly slower and paused, needs breaths and emphasis - it's so quick, that at some point, one just totally stops listening to you... And that's a real shame, because you do write well. Just got acquainted with you, dear Film Loner - very good choices!... Thanks! 🙂
I saw most of these at the New York Film festival. I agree with most of your assessment except for Anora which I found predictable and over the top. Great job on doing such great work. I appreciate your thoughtfulness in utilizing and correlating their themes to our world’s contemporary problems.
I loved Furiosa, surprisingly too since I wasn't that crazy about its trailers. I think the best description I've heard of it describes it as a kind of biblical epic, which feels rather fitting.
Trap has seemed to be my most divisive choice…I had loads of fun with it tho! But I’m also an easy mark for anything and everything Shyamalan. His work just really stands out to me in a sea of anonymous Hollywood slop.
I nearly stopped watching once I saw you have Trap in your honorable mentions for great films this year. That was, undoubtedly, a top 3 worst film I watched this year. Even with film being subjective, Trap being an absolute dog shit piece of cinema is an objective truth.
The musical I loved this year (Joshua Oppenheimer’s The End) I unfortunately didn’t get the chance to see until after making the video. Other than that, been a pretty poor year for the genre in my opinion.
Wow... 2014 is my favorite year of movies with films like Whiplash, Birdman, Nightcrawler, Days of Future Past, Winter Soldier, and Guardians of the Galaxy, John Wick and Planet of the Apes. Now we have movies that are boring. Furiosa was a prequel and not a sequel. I don't care about her past. Challengers and Queer sounds like someones autobiography. I don’t think these people realize how boring their lives are. We need more movies that inspire imagination and not someone's person therapy session. These writers need to go outside and get a life. They're writing boring shite. These movies are a boring waste of time.

Pretty Woman (1990)
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Like Someone in Love (2012)
The Housemaid (2010)
Belle de Jour (1967)
The Lover (1992)
The Girlfriend Experience (2009)
The Duchess (2008)
Cold War (2018)
Madame Bovary (1857)
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1958)
Anna Karenina (1877)
Lilya 4-Ever (2002)
Morvern Callar (2002)
and yes, Cinderella!
This movie reminds me of how Scorsese adapted the Hong Kong thriller, Infernal Affairs and called it The Departed. It's the same movie, just repackaged for a Hollywood audience.

Thanks for sharing. So interesting seeing how wildly different everyone’s lists can be. Not a single one is even remotely close to being similar to another. Love to see it!
This must be a list of the worst films of the year.
Cute! lol
Great list. One question. Where is Dune: Part Two?
Really enjoyed it but is just outside of my top 25.
@@thefilmloner Unfathomable but to each his own.
Flow is one of the best movies of the year for me
A great one! Memoir of a Snail is another terrific animated film from this year I’d recommend
What makes you think most of these titles won’t show up on the majority of year end lists?? Please😅Anora, Nickle Boys, The Brutalist, Challengers, Sing Sing etc. all solid and obvious picks.
I agree with you on all this but no Dune 2 is crazy.
Lol I’m sorry! It just barely missed the list
@@thefilmloner No problem, it was still an amazing video! Keep up the good work!
THE SUBSTANCE es sin duda alguna, la mejor película del año.
My Top Ten of 2024:
10. The Order (8/10)
9. The End (8/10)
8. Dune: Part Two (8/10)
7. History of Souleymane (8/10)
6. Christspiracy (9/10)
5. Oddity (9/10)
4. The Devil’s Bath (9/10)
3. Monkey Man (10/10)
2. Longlegs (10/10)
1. Kinds of Kindness (10/10)
Yet to see: Nosferatu, The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing
I look forward to seeing "Here," the film mentioned here. I saw "Here," the RoObert Zemekis film, and it was a one-trick pony that had me grinding my teeth.
La Chimera the best 🥲
I really liked EXHUMA this year
Heard quite a lot of great things about that one. I’m interested to check it out eventually
@@thefilmloner I couldn't get into it at all,.Acting was embarrassingly bad~
Which movie have the robots 🤖
If you missed it Kneecap is outstanding. Alot of fun.
Hip hop barrf~
@matthewmatt5285 it's more Irish rap than hiphop. It's a good film. The musics good too
Janet Planet based
... narration could be slightly slower and paused, needs breaths and emphasis - it's so quick, that at some point, one just totally stops listening to you... And that's a real shame, because you do write well.
Just got acquainted with you, dear Film Loner - very good choices!... Thanks! 🙂
Megalopolis a disappointment? It is a modern masterpiece. You should watch it again.
I saw most of these at the New York Film festival. I agree with most of your assessment except for Anora which I found predictable and over the top.
Great job on doing such great work.
I appreciate your thoughtfulness in utilizing and correlating their themes to our world’s contemporary problems.
Thank you so much that’s very kind! I’m hoping to go to NYFF next year the programming seems to be so elite every single year.
No dune part 2? 😢
I loved Furiosa, surprisingly too since I wasn't that crazy about its trailers. I think the best description I've heard of it describes it as a kind of biblical epic, which feels rather fitting.
All the promotional material didn’t do it justice whatsoever. But can’t believe I ever doubted the maestro George Miller
Wd b Gr8 if u cud ad timestamps
You should collab with in frame out
For the algo...
You’re a real one for that!
for the algo (the sequel)
HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS!!! ❤❤❤
This dude is unbelievable ❤
I just don't get the honorable mention to "trap". I found it a really poor and lazy movie with a great premise
Please list thankU
You lost me at Trap. Your stock dropped like a rock.
2 films that came out this year that are better than all of these :
Sing Sing
Io Capitano
Trap. You for real? That movie was horrible!
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Will forever be a warrior for M. Night!
@thefilmloner one man's Trap is another man's Se7en
Ok you lost me at Trap haha
Musical hater spotted
The musical I loved this year (Joshua Oppenheimer’s The End) I unfortunately didn’t get the chance to see until after making the video. Other than that, been a pretty poor year for the genre in my opinion.
I don't get why you or anyone else could like Trap.
so many of these are 2023. 2024 mostly sucked don't pretend otherwise.
Definitely not as strong as other years but I wouldn’t go as far to say it sucked. To each their own though.
Challengers was mean spirited and left a terrible aftertaste. Ands doesn’t stick its landing imho. Stop overanalyzing it.
Damn.... You need to change the title to "for pretentious film school students"
Bunch of indie artsy fartsy stuff
I Saw the TV Glow is terrible.
Trap 😂 You lost all credibility. That film was complete trash
Transformers One, Wicked Little Letters, Kinds of Kindness, The Fall Guy, Deadpool & Wolverine, Kill, Poor Things, Inside Out 2.
