It’s videos like this that make me truly appreciate UA-cam and Google. I didn’t know I had a Sargent knob, but it has to be one of the trickiest ones to remove. Thanks for explaining the mechanism!
OMG! THANK YOU! 20 years I put up with paint on the door knobs because no one knew how to take them off.!! Looked at all the rest of the how tos and they didn't work because these are different. The name has been painted over so I didn't know what brand. A 1000 thank yous.
Thank you so much for posting this! After spending hours trying in vain, poking around all the holes and crevices, it never occurred to me to depress the wires as you clearly demonstrated. Your video was direct and to the point. Great job.
Thanks so much! Have these all over our 1950's building. We were close, just didn't pull hard enough when depressing the spring. Appreciate your knowledge.
OMG!!! This video saved my sanity!! I already encountered one of these & knew there was some sort of detent that needed to be pressed but couldn't figure it out. So that know got cut, sawed, hammered, & chiseled out of that door. Now there's another door with that same kind of knob that I need to changed out & this video is an absolute life saver!! Thank you so much for making a very well explained, easy to follow, step by step tutorial! Cheers!!
Thanks for this! I cut off the handle with an angle grinder to try to figure it out and still had no clue on the second one. Until I typed in the brand I was watching several videos that didn’t help. I’m not sure how one would figure this out on their own. I have 20 of these to replace and now I know the trick!
FINALLY! Thanks to this video I found that the doorknobs in my house use THIS system, and not the typical "push in the pin and slide the knob off" type. Couldn't have done it without you.
Hi... After two hours of trying to figure out how to take the knob off, I watched your video and was able to get it off. I don't think my lock was sargent, there were no markings... really old door knob set.... but it did screw off. thanks again.
Very helpful. And I realized that I *had* the special wrench in my dad's miscellaneous tool collection. So I could put them back on without having the finish damaged.
Thank you! Home has 1960s era locksets. I never would have figured this one out. A nail can be put in the holes in the plates to give a grip for loosening or tightening. Note for reinstall, will need to push in the wire again.
Almost exactly what I have. The only difference is there is a hole/wire on just the inside. I had to remove the deadlatch, then the outside knob slides right off. Thanks!
Mine Sargent lock had like 9 coats of paint on it. I finally got it loose enough to see the wire pin. I pushed and pulled and played with it for over an hour. Still no luck. So I pulled out the hacksaw, and sawed the darn thing off. It took a while, but I am replacing it anyway.
Mine was a different situation. I was locked outside the bathroom and the knob was a no-key knob (whatever that's called. It doesn't have a keyhole. So I guess it shouldn't be locked from the outside.) No matter what I do, I couldn't find a latch, or a screw, or whatever, and all the youtube tutorials couldn't help me. So I took a 10lbs dumbbell and smashed the knob with it, and it fell right off. Haha
Rather than grabbing the collars with plumbing pliers (which gouges the finish), look for a little hole on each collar, insert a pin punch or an allen key, and rotate the collars to loosen them by pulling them around with the pin.
just remove the interior side knob. often there is a pin going through the lock into the latch, remove pin, then remove latch and the rest of the lock will fall
Thank you for this addendum! I was going nuts, trying to find the wire on the exterior side of the doorknob, and there was no way to get to it. You are a lifesaver!
WOW! Thank you so very much! I was going crazy poking everything into that stupid little hole! I was able to screw off the plate, but cannot find the wire. When I turn, it's blank on both sides!! Argh.
This video go ahead and is useful for people who go ahead and have Sargeant doorknobs. I go ahead and am going to go ahead and guess that the uploader go ahead and is also a software tech. 😂
I managed to get the outside of the room knob off but on the inside, the wire that you push in will not turn so that it is exposed in the opening!!! Now what?
I removed the door handles and whole locking mechanism but the last part of the lock is stuck in the door. There's no screws on the plate and I tried putting a screwdriver in the center holes and prying but no luck. There's a hole on the right side, a hole in the center, and half a hole towards the hinges. Wtf I can't find anything anywhere about this.
They make a tool to turn the rose.you don't use pliers because it marks up the door. Plus you never showed the pin that holds the latch to the housing. Amatures
I work in hospitals and i had to replace all the old knobs , i spend 2 hours in one knob tryingto figure it out. ! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

After forever and tons of other videos this one was IT!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
In 2020, this is still relevant on the 40 year old knob in my office. THANKS!
I'm actually a locksmith and your video helped! Not a knob you see very often. Thanks!

Thank for for this post! I got 55 year old door knobs removed after watching this!
Thank you! I would have never figured out to "depress the wire" without this!! Much in debt!
Awesome, much respect to the Sargent brand. Had me stumped for a minute until I stumbled upon this video. Thank you thank you thank you.

Thank you. What a freakin' puzzle these things are. Wasted Hours, but didn't want to destroy the door. Glad I found your video.
Thank you so much! Probably the most confusing door knob I've ever had to replace

thank you very much for this video! I'd never come across a " Sargent" door knob before and wondered what in the heck to do thanks again!
I'm thinking this is closest to my setup. Damn excellent video. Wish all the DIY style vids were this detailed.
Yes a tough doorknob to get off. Thanks finally a video that shows how to With the lock on the door .thanks fixitnowproductions
Thank you so much. I had just seen that wire and wondered if that was the key to removing the handle.
THIS IS WHAT I HAD NEEDED.
Thank you!! This worked. No other video helped me!!
thanks brother man you just helped me get a bigger room lol
Thanks! I was about to bust out the reciprocating saw :)
Haha exactly
Thank you for this video! After an hour of beating and prying I watched the video 5 seconds it was off.
Very helpful. And I realized that I *had* the special wrench in my dad's miscellaneous tool collection. So I could put them back on without having the finish damaged.
Super clear and thorough. Thank you!
Gave me the exact instructions I needed! Thanks so much!
Great video, thank you so much!
Thank you so much! I would still be looking at that dang door knob if it weren’t for you! 🤪
Thank you this just saved us so much time! 😊
Thank you for your awesome help, this got me to the final video I had to watch!
The year is 2024 and I had door handle similar. Can you believe it! 2024. Thanks so much
Very good find. Thanks
Thank you! Home has 1960s era locksets. I never would have figured this one out. A nail can be put in the holes in the plates to give a grip for loosening or tightening. Note for reinstall, will need to push in the wire again.
Thanks for this video! It was incredibly helpful!
Checking UA-cam was my last resort before I got the sawzall!
Almost exactly what I have.

What a Hack ............. Destroyed a Lock
Thanks. That helped me change my lock!
You should remove them with a spanner wrench so you don't deface the finish
Very useful video. Thank you!
great! I was able to finally get this thing off!! now how do I put it back together?
Good video. I was about to cut it off!
Thanks a lot man.. this helped a lot!
Life saver my dude! Thanks.
Thanks for this video! Big help!
Excellent video... Thanks so much!!!

Perfect, just what I needed to figure out!
What if you turn the knob before unscrewing that collar and align the holes then use a screw driver to depress that wire?
Only one side of my knobs have the wire to push down. I don't see anything on the other side to release it. Any ideas? Thanks!

Really helped me Thanks!

I'm pretty sure he didn't care how marked up he made it, it was pretty obvious it was going in the trash. Know it alls.
EXTREME CLOSEUP!
They definitely don't make door knobs the same way anymore
Hi person😜
You should go to WoodPrix if you'd like to make it yourself guys.
OHH NOO!!!! NOT A SARGENT!!!
And take it off and throw it away. Crappiest commercial door knobs.
