  • Nick Coles is a primary school teacher based in Peterborough. The school he works in recently made the national press when they decided to 'scrap marking' and instead focus on developing a more child-centred form of verbal feedback. The decision was taken by the school due to the fact that the process of marking had often become a demoralising task for the teachers and an unhelpful form of feedback for pupils.
Conferencing was introduced as the alternative - every child would engage in 1:1 time with their teacher discussing their work. The process has proved successful so far and has been met with a positive reception from pupils who feel that they now better understand their learning.
This talk was featured at the first TEDxPeterborough on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at The Key Theatre. Our theme was Variety Is The Spice Of Life. As a Primary School teacher Nick has spent the last five years at William Law CE Primary School in Werrington.
Over the course of this time he has taught across Key Stage 2, coordinated PE and sport across the school, and has been a Year Group Leader.
Now, with the school taking the decision to scrap written marking, he has enjoyed taking part in the discussion surrounding the impact of high quality verbal feedback on pupil progress. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I LOVE this. I wish all schools would use this model. We are so hyper-focused on 'evidence-based' that we've created an environment of redundant and irrelevant 'data' or as he stated "evidence for the sake of evidence" which has little impact on academics and mostly negative impacts on self-esteem. Conferencing is more effective and benefits both students and teachers.

This is very information and as you said, it may have its issues. But it is worth the trial. I would, however, say that it would have been good to see your presentation slide. This would cater to the needs of the Hearing impaired. I would be able to follow more effectively as I kept on thinking, what can he see that I cannot? So my focus was partially on what your were saying. Overall, great stuff.
