My father and I both loved Santana and especially this album. When he was fading away in 1990 and on a ventilator I put this album on for him with headphones. He was barely able to squeeze my hand to the rhythm, so I know he was able to hear it. He passed a few hours later. I can't hear this album without memories of him flooding back.
Probably the most lyrical outpouring of soul-reaching guitar trade-offs by Santana and Schon ever to be captured. All the more amazing is how the whole album gels in spite of the internal conflicts that were going on at the time. This was a major transition phase for the Santana band.
One of the greatest albums of all time. I've been listening to this song for 40+ years and I still can't tell which guitarist is Carlos and which is Neal Schon. Brilliant interplay.
Caravanserai is my all time favourite of Santana. This is a record you should listen to from the beginning to the end. It leaves you in a trance, pure ecstasy to my ears. Love it!
This is the best track from the best Santana record of all time. Beam me up!. I learnt to play the whole thing by rote on the guitar. You need a Gibson Les Paul for this song.
@@MisterTMH Wow, that's so weird !!! First, I totally agree with you, and I want to thank you so much for reminding me ... I learned it by rote too, way back when it came out (well, obviously within a year or so). I was playing a lot back then, and I definitely had to work this into my practice sessions. Man it was such a pleasure, playing something so beautiful. I may not have ever gotten it down quite as good as you, but I had an uncanny ear and could always somehow figure out how to dial in the right tones. I DID have a Blonde Beauty Les Paul at the time though (not Gold Top), and a couple Marshall amps, a Fender Twin Reverb, an Ibanez effects rack, Wah, etc. (not all used for this song, of course but, just fondly remembering my setup 😁👍😊😉😎). Man, I had to hock that guitar when I moved from Florida back to California, and it took me exactly 30 years, but I had promised myself that I WOULD own a Blonde Beauty again, and I'm happy to say, I now do. It's my baby.
In other words, what you're telling us is, Santana's music unlocks the door to an alternate universe where time and space coalesce into a fluid, shapeless form where music is the only substance of matter that can hold you and keep you tethered to some semblance of a concrete reality. Yeah, I get that. I fully agree. Carry on, JP!
This whole album is a masterpiece. As others have said, you should listen to it right through in order, the whole is bigger than the sum of the parts. And the parts are perfection.
When noodling becomes jamming and jamming becomes jazz. Guitar sailing, sliding, rolling and cresting the dunes of this album. It is such a delight. I believe both usages of delicacy are correct but I haven't researched it to confirm.
This is the catchiest guitar improvisation of all time. I've heard this hundreds of times and my brain follows the guitar lead like it's a catchy chorus and nothing ever disappoints. It's always a joy to listen to.
Now where talking Justin, one of Santana's "Greatest" all time songs !!!! A Masterpiece !! Amazing soloing and emotional vibe ! One of my very Favorite tunes always in my Top 10 : D The complete Band musicianship is superb !!
Justin, come to think of it You could have reacted to the whole album in one go because all these pieces can be considered as an overall experience, as the general atmosphere is moving and contemplative and gives the impression of a journey through the desert. The record sleeve also contributes to this unique atmosphere.
Thanks Justin . This album has so much atmosphere. There's a lot of Africa in this one but I love how Santana try to represent all the continents in their music. Is it me or does Carlos play the happiest blues.
Absolutely loved this record which. just preceded his Mahavishnu phase. The collaboration with John (Love Devotion and Surrender) and the follow up Welcome are great records as well. Many don’t care for jazz fusion or too much guitar, I say to each his own. I liked Smooth. Everybody needs to earn a living, I much preferred this era.
Santana is always pleasant to listen to. His hits are great too. Like Europa, Black Magic Woman, Samba pati. Melodic is the right word… I remember at the time we were amazed on how he could maintain one note for seconds. When the time was on how fast you could play, he was on the emotions. All guitarists wanted to be able to play Europa.
Half the soloing on this track was by Neal Schon who would go on to form Journey with keyboardist Gregg Rolie also from Santana. Have a listen to the first 3 Journey albums. Prog fusion classics
What can you say? Beautiful! Some might say "Just noodleing". But jams like this take you away. And probably with repeat plays this will unfold and reveal unique musical phrasings. Loved it!
This album turned a 17 year old rock bass player into a Jazz Bassist. Life changing for me! It features soaring melodies and intense meditative improvisation…..it’s only noodling when you aren’t saying anything.
A total masterpiece of a track and album! Essentially a 6 minute long guitar solo that just gets better and better as it progresses. This track is arguably Carlos Santana's peak moment as a guitarist, so much feeling and emotion and melody in the phrasing, just impeccable! Great backing up to his solo by the band too, the rhythm section as tight as ever and Doug Rauch lays down some great bass lines. I believe Neal Schon also contributed some guitar parts to this track. Superb track that takes me way back and some great memories indeed, thanks for posting!
For those of you who might wonder what the Santana album after Caravanserai might have sounded if the band had stayed together, look up Abraxas Pool. It's all the original band members (except Dave brown, the late bassist, and Carlos) who gathered in 1997 to do an album and mini-tour! That was it, and the CD is rare, but, there's some choice stuff on that CD! Might consider sniffing it out on UA-cam - for what it's worth!
You got to remember Carlos Santana is considered one of the Best Electric Guitar player in Music History along with Jimmy Page......Stevie Ray Vaugh.........Jimmy Hendricks..............Eric Clapton.......and Steve Howe. This song is one of his masterpieces. Excellent song!!!! Excellent reaction!!!!
Now listen to "Promise of a Fisherman" from Santana's Borboletta album. As they asked in school, compare and contrast. It has Stanley Clarke on bass and Airto on drums. It's a bit more intense overall than Song of the Wind. FYI, the intro song Flor de Canela is only 2:20. Keyboards and bass are much more prominent. Pay attention to the transition at 2:20. ua-cam.com/video/jrWqli5cq1E/v-deo.html
This is one of their most impressive works, because it stirs the soul, and brings to the surface emotions thought lost, or buried! Re: the guitar, Carlos is sharing the guitar leads with Neal Schon, but it is so seamless, it isn't obvious! This was the last Santana album featuring Neal and Greg Rolie the keyboard playar, before they jumped ship and formed Journey! What a going-away present for us!!!
Caravanserai was one of the 3 albums that cemented Santana the band and Santana the man 's reputation as one of the great bands. The other 2 are Abraxas and Santana III. The 1st album (Santana) introduced them as a band that demanded notice, because of their unique sound and talent. But the 3 albums after that are what established them.
Afternoon, JP. Dave from London, enjoying the beautiful autumn (fall) colours of The Trees (on a walk earlier in Holland Park). Quite simply, Carlos makes the guitar sing. Yes, plenty of notes, but they all matter, and the melodies are exquisite. You paint a brilliant picture, Justin. My favourite track from Caravanserai, but for superlative playing by Carlos, Samba Pa Ti from my favourite album Abraxas is a close rival.
JP, you really looked like you were itching to get up and play air guitar 🤣 I would strongly suggest or nicely request that you give a listen to, " Incident at Neshabur/ In a silent way" from Fillmore: The Last Day's. It is an awesome display of how this band can move through phases of sound. It'll only take about 13 minute's of your time.🤗 P. S. Clive Davis told Carlos this album would be the demise of the band. Guess he was wrong.🤪
RD🇩🇴After my soul left my body behind and began the journey towards the unknown, if they buried me to the rhythm of this beautiful piece of music I would go to heaven or hell with a smile on my face...
My favorite Santana Song! Listen to the live version recorded in Scotland! Reminds me of driving on PCH in Cali or if I surfed, this would be on my mind. Thank you!
I absolutely love that tune. Personally, I would have added a short organ solo in there to break up the guitar a bit, but that's just a detail. The percussion was amazing ... as it ALWAYS is with Santana.
I haven’t heard this in almost thirty years, I loved it then and I still love it now. There was a time when I woke and slept to this song. It’s simply one of the most delightful pieces of music ever!!
It is hard to tell Where Neil Schon's and Carlos Santana 's phrases start and end. There are two lead guitarists playing live in the studio over two chords on this track. The " VIVA SANTANA" Live version is great too.
With this album Santana entered a new level of sophistication just 3 years and 3 albums on from their original Santana album and began my favourite run of their releases ending at Borboletta, this time 2 years and 2 albums on. During that time Carlos Santana also released 3 collaborations with Buddy Miles, John McLaughlin & Alice Coltrane (my favourite of his collab. albums) so he wasn't just resting on his laurels. After this run I felt his conviction floundered a little although exceptions would be the Lotus and Moonflower albums and I didn't feel the same level of commitment until The Swing of Delight, 1980's collaboration with Herbie Hancock and his then current band. Now I recognise my opinion is heavily influenced by my love of Jazz and won't be everyone's and I'd also add that I still continued to buy every album by him, solo and with his bands right up to the present. Even an album by him that I consider to be not one of his best is still superior to many others' best. But those I've mentioned are the ones I return to most often. It might be worth mentioning that the production plays a part in my preferences. Those were crystal clear but some of the others were a little muddy. Even The Swing of delight requires a really good Hi-Fi (as opposed to just stereo) system to bring it out but I put in the effort because Herbie Hancock is my favourite musician in any genre on any instrument. It doesn't hurt that he usually surrounds himself with the best accompaniment. That particular album was an early experiment in recording, production and mastering purely in digital for the newly emerging CD market (Herbie is a technophile) and I'm not convinced that helped at all.
The solo... which is the whole song actually, is really a combination of both Carlos AND Neal Schon (of Journey fame), who started out his career playing in Santana for two albums, Santana III and Caravanserai. This, to me, is one of the most beautiful guitar pieces ever recorded.
I bought this album back in 1981. Years later when I became an active skydiver and videographer I often used 'Song Of The Wind' for my customer videos - before the copyright risk came along. A simply beautiful song I still never get tired of hearing. I think Santana hit his creative peak with this album.
My favorite too. My one album, my one song if only 1 on a deserted isle. Gives me chills, for decades now since the 1980's, ya, long time ago. Saw him perform live 4 times all over planet Earth, twice within the first 5 rows. Beyond description. I've had 2 homes completely destroyed and lost everything both times, once by earthquake, once by fire. This was the first song I memorably replaced both times. It all turned out ok...still alive, hard to kill, I've got 2/9 left :-0 Life just happens.
Well said, talented and something I wouldn't turn off when it came on the radio but I wouldn't rush out and get an album. Too many complete sandwiches out there!
It's the warm breeze, that melts my frozen heart. And a hot hurricane of passion that sets Carlos Santana apart. Some of the original band members, were where Journey got its start, but that's putting the donkey behind the cart! Anyway Peace 2 u I've said my part.
Welly friend you've gone this far...check out "Welcome"...Santana's next and even tastier, I would recommend side 1 then side 2...enjoy...and thanks for the share
I'm glad you are doing this album in order. Hope that, now that you have the vinyl, you get a nice chance to listen to the while thing uninterrupted on your own. As I'm sure you can imagine, it's much more emotionally effective. Can't wait til you get to the last track, Every Step Of The Way. You'll know why I say this when you get there
My husband loves Santana and I enjoy his music too. He just got his new album and I find interesting that each song seems to be of a different style of music, on the new album that is. We saw him in concert in Tampa a few years ago.
It's likely that you've already ascertained that "delicacy" is an adverb, describing a degree of finesse and subtlety in the handling of something, or it's something prized and deeply-savoured to eat. Um...that's all I remember I had to say. Enjoy your evening too. 😊
Dude ... Egg-salad, er, I mean, Excellent reaction, man !!! I'm always stoked whenever another human being discovers this phenomenal "piece of art" !!! I think every musician has that 1 time when he exceeds everything else he or she has ever done, and if we are all lucky, the recorders are on. For Santana, he has a lot of really great and phenomenal moments, but I firmly believe this is his finest work, and unfortunately, it's not even that well known by the masses. Such a shame, but then, that's why treasure hunters love their jobs, right ??? If you want to see my vote for Eric Clapton's best night ever, react to his work on the Derek & The Dominos track, Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad (ua-cam.com/video/0Aw7Jai7peM/v-deo.html ). It has to be this specific version, because even though it is also a phenomenal song as well, it is that 1 concert where he hit his peak, as far as I'm concerned. It's better than all versions of Layla, Cocaine, Blues Power, Have You Ever Loved A Woman, etc., etc., etc. IMHO. I played, off an on, for close to 50 years now, and if I were him, when I walked off that stage that night, I would have thought to myself, "Well, that's the best it's ever gonna get !!! I sure hope they recorders got all of that. Now, let's just see how long I can ride this out". I hope to get to see your reaction to it sometime 😉👍😊.
I will try again 🤞please do mike oldfield tubular bells 2 live edinburgh castle its incredible right up your street with the variety of instruments and musicians ( 15 or so) on show and mike is just flawless the live performance is way better than the audio version i know its amazing but to get your opinion and approval would make my day 🤞🙏🏴🎼
The drummer Michael Shrieve did a one take on this. He had to because they couldn't edit the tape after Carlos and Neal Schon recorded their solos. Cuz yeah, Schon from Journey plays guitar with Carlos on the album and on the previous one called Santana III.
mi cancion favorita muy relajante mucha inspiracion teletransporta dios bendiga a santana y eso que el productor no le daba buenaa venta a este album al momento de producirlo y para mi es el mejor album que ha hecho santana
It's actually Carlos and Neal Schon who played back and forth. It's interesting if you know how Carlos plays, you can pick it up really quickly. But the opening is actually Neal playing and Carlos picks up . It's a song I will never get tired of listening to .it's also the last album with Schon and Rolie, they went on to found Journey.

This track is perfection, it needs nothing just listen and deeply feel the power and grace, the sensual ride and the mystery of where it is going.

It's Carlos and Neil Schon going back and forth.
Nice comment my friend. Most people probably think it's all Carlos but when you know the guitarists you can tell the difference.
This is basically just a solo over two chords - but it's magnificent.
Closing track of the album is another highlight for me!
Or as Zappa said, Santana's secret chord progression. :)
Ah, another track from my favourite Santana album. I find the balance between Latin and jazz just about perfect here. :)
This album turned a 17 year old rock bass player into a Jazz Bassist. Life changing for me! It features soaring melodies and intense meditative improvisation…..it’s only noodling when you aren’t saying anything.

Exquisite..
52 Years later it still brings tears of Joy.....

My brother you have to listen to Transcendence by Santana! Studio version. I won’t say anymore.
I will try again 🤞please do mike oldfield tubular bells 2 live edinburgh castle its incredible right up your street with the variety of instruments and musicians ( 15 or so) on show and mike is just flawless the live performance is way better than the audio version i know its amazing but to get your opinion and approval would make my day 🤞🙏🏴🎼
Nope, most of the guitar leads were done by Neal Schon.
Guitarist Neil Schon played 90% of the soloing in this song
Sweet I don't think I know this one I'm looking forward to it.
The drummer Michael Shrieve did a one take on this. He had to because they couldn't edit the tape after Carlos and Neal Schon recorded their solos. Cuz yeah, Schon from Journey plays guitar with Carlos on the album and on the previous one called Santana III.
A truly superb. album all round.
Yeah man, this song...this album.... I can't describe it, I can only love it.
What a great tune to chill to..missing the next song on Todd Rundgrens Utopia
Play the musica wirh your Mouth.
Would this be considered a 'concept' album?
This is my favorite song.
So much heart and soul in this album. Moves the soul of me.

One of the best albums next to Borboletta !!!
Great commentary I agree! Great.
never gonna' give you up ?
Carlos channels God
The best - this with Europa.
THE 3 RD ALBUM IS GREAT ALSO
It's actually Carlos and Neal Schon who played back and forth. It's interesting if you know how Carlos plays, you can pick it up really quickly. But the opening is actually Neal playing and Carlos picks up . It's a song I will never get tired of listening to .it's also the last album with Schon and Rolie, they went on to found Journey.
Yeah around 3:52 when JP takes a deep breath and a smile spreads across his relaxing face.
Incredible piece of music!
Santana at his best
