Matt Freeman is an absolute GOAT bass player. Just incredible.
Rancid is maybe the most important band of my life and this is their best album since 2003. Everybody should have And Out Come the Wolves in their collection.
Ur like an old friemd
Rancid is one of those bands where whenever a fan tells me "Rancid is the best band in the world" I know they 100% believe it.
Never going to do better than And Out Come the Wolves.
@@bmoneyrancidfan91 tune!!!!!
@@rancid216great f ing album , but Let’s go tops it imo
I grew up with Tim and Matt, and had the great pleasure of playing in a few pre OP IVY bands with the both of them while we were all still in high school. It brings me such joy to see them still making such impactful music. Bloody legends the both of them!
Also punk: ua-cam.com/video/4JWoAaJJ2Rg/v-deo.html
So rad! Op Ivy is still in the playlist on the daily❤
Cool man. At this point I feel like Tim and Lars could roll out of bed (guitars already in hand somehow) and write a new punk standard like this while taking their heart pills, feeding the dogs and getting the kiddos ready for school.
Everybody talks about “and out come the wolves” being their masterpiece but for me it’s the album after that one “life won’t wait”.
I can't decide between And Out Come The Wolves, Life Won't Wait, and Rancid (2000).
@@joeyhavoc9593 Let's Go is like 30+ tracks of all killer no filler ... GREAT FUCKING BAND PERIOD!
@@JackXombi No argument here. PUNX!
Life Won't Wait and 2000 are my favourite two. Couldn't be further apart from eachother.
I know it's cliche to say Indestructible was where I stopped listening to them, but to be honest, for me it was solely because I was such a huge fan of 2000 that the follow up just didn't hit the right way at all
@@cainedbutable Whilst we may all disagree about their best album, Indestructible is hands down the worst thing they've ever done. A mid-life crisis album of bad songs. Four great albums since that massive mis-step.
Rancid, NOFX, Bad Religion….and so on. Some of the best bands on the planet. You tend to find the bass is far more important compared to a normal rock band.
I too grew up with Rancid and Nofx, they properly formed my worldviews and am still listening to their music pretty much every day 🤘
Would love to hear justin run through some NOFX
@@supabad-swampie8373 Great idea specially now they are on their official last world tour.
You got it 100 man. Matt Freeman is an absolute monster yet doesn’t use trad methods. He should be beloved by the entire rock and music world not just punk and hardcore kids!!!
Nicest dudes too, you wouldn’t have to worry about them beating ya up, they’re quick friends with most. Came from the hard streets, but it’s humbled them for sure. They befriended and supported a lot of poppier punk and emo bands back when they were just coming up, because they saw a lot of parallels to the struggles their generation of punk rock had back in the day, instead of bullying anyone they stood with them. Those kids were all skin and bones, make up and swooped hair, buddies with these guys sharing stages and goin on tours. They’re pretty good dudes.
Hey Justin, it's really cool that you reviewed Rancid.
Everyone here is mentioning their record 'And Out Come The Wolves' (with good reason). I first came to enjoy their music much later on, specifically their record called 'Indestructible'. It is similar to 'Easter Is Cancelled' in that I would call it their lead singer's 'divorce record'...lots of songs about Tim's breakup. The songs 'Indestructable', 'Fall Back Down', 'Red Hot Moon' and one of my favorites 'Ghost Band' are great listens. Soo many other great tracks too.
Yes! Red Hot Moon especially is a cracker. 😁
Indestructible is their second best album IMO. What a great fuckin album.
"...And Out Come the Wolves" is in my top 10 albums of all time list.
Rancid was one of the most important bands to me when I was in high school. Hope you check out "...And out come the Wolves"
To go from Operation Ivy to Rancid, is just incredible
🙌It would be f***ing awesome you had Steve Jones in one of your podcasts and could ask him directly 🙌 ❤
Cool analysis of this new single! The new album is definitely one of their best, ...And Out Come the Wolves is their masterpiece, as other comments have mentioned.
You have great takes on Rancid. They are good at keeping up with the times and still being classic punk rock, which is hard to do.
The breakdown of UK v. US punk is pretty spot on. Probably why I preferred the UK bands. Definitely some exceptions of course. Black Flag. Minor Threat. Nowadays, seems like you need to look “Down Under” at bands like Amyl and the Sniffers & The Chats for that UK flavor.
I think you know what you’re on about. Can we be honest? Rancid are shit. American hardcore punk is legendary dye to quality & culture. Who
The fuck are Rancid & Greenday sell out shit bands? Just sounds like Blink 182 to me!
and Civic!
I don't entirely agree with that. Check out Grade 2, Kid Kapichi, Riskee and the Ridicule, Popes of Chillitown, and Faintest Idea for some cracking UK punk rock. 😁
No means no fugazi aswell I'm British but love many American and Canadian bands too.
Holehog
Rancid is one of my all time favorite bands ever! I agree that Out come the wolves is their best album but I think a lot of people including myself kind of slept on life won’t wait simply because it was the follow up to and outcome the wolves. But that album is also brilliant!
I hated life won't wait aside from a couple of songs it's only now I see the brilliance of it. Unfortunately I haven't enjoyed anything since the 2000 self titled but there's a sold 5 albums to still enjoy
I think life won't wait is a masterpiece. I think its their best
I loved Life Wont Wait. As per all the Clash comparisons, it was their Sandinista, messing around with whatever genres & collabs they liked. Ton of great songs all with punk rock attitude.
54 year old American here - Rancid speaks to and for my generation.
check out the bass solo in Maxwell Murder! could be the best solo in all of punk
Yeah, Clash... Rancid was very inspired The Clash. They even put out some albums by Joe Strummer on their own label after The Clash disbanded. The song Indestructible was about him.
Rancid is up there for me. Gritty is another word I'd use to describe their music. Out Come The Wolves is a great album. Have a Merry Christmas Justin. 👍🎄
This is fun watching you react and breakdown songs like this
The reinforced vocals that come in just at the end of the phrases and in the chorus have big Ramones/Beastie Boys energy. I am eight years old again, jumping on the couch while my mom makes lunch. I don't know what taxes are.
I've always thought that Tim seems like he's rapping his flow & phrasing.
I’m 46 now been into this band since I was 13. Fucking love them
Great band! Freeman is a bass God. Fact!
That Maxwell Murder bass solo is immense!!!
ohhhh! so freaking awesome you are covering Rancid!!! My favorite band since I was a kid in the 90s. I started playing bass only because of Matt Freeman. I had never heard bass (nor have I since tbh) in punk. By the way, you are not wrong about the UK punk tinge to Rancid. Lars is an old school Oi! guy who played with the UK Subs for a while.
Rancid 2000 is an absolute wrecking ball
"I'm just not going to tune" - punk rock attitude right there haha
When I heard “Hooligans”, I thought it was some 80’s Ska I had missed… :).
The “we’re gonna live forever “ line reminds me of a line Tim put in an older track Indestructible “Through music you can live forever.” I think this song is expressing the same sentiment that people will hear your music and ideas hundreds of years after you die and in that way you can live forever
Trivia: As for reminding you of The Clash, Tim Armstrong has often mentioned them as huge inspirations, both in interviews and in songs, and Rancid was accused of blatantly ripping of The Clash for quite a while. Then Joe Strummer was signed to Tim's record label Hellcat, and he stayed there until he died, and I think that made people shut up about it. Also, Lint was Tim Armstrongs nickname back in the Gilman St. days.
Yes you are correct Tim is lent when he was on telegraph Avenue playing after operation ivy broke up to make money on the corner of Gilman and telegraph and the Clash rip off thing is pretty annoying. Hellcat is owned by Joe Strummer RIP, as well as Tim/lint Armstrong Rancid does a cover of, the clashes song cheat, Joe Strummer says himself that he is passing down punk to rancid. I don’t think they sound like a clash that much at all. Honestly, they have their own sound they sound more like the Ramones.
As a UA-cam critique on rancid and just found out about them, will learn that Tim Armstrong is very non-aggressive, melodic and considered a poet. You need to look up his acoustic set
Tim Armstrong, a poets, life, and all of his other projects he’s not heavy hard like London second wave they have some of that hard-core sound for the fans that only respect that type but that is not this band whatsoever. Do you research please
@@ListedMia-sm4xmOkay
@@septemberkidzzz i’m not sure what you meant by ok every punk movement has been inspired by the clash but I promise Joe Strummer and Tim Armstrong co-owned hellcat. I said you were correct about LINT 10 during the Gilman Street days operation ivy I’ll send you a link.
You said “do your research” I said “okay” 😊
@@septemberkidzzz everything you’ve said has been right on 👌
Love Rancid! Glad you’re reacting to them ❤
Rancid is one of my favorite bands, and I loved your take on it. Cheers!
My wife and I saw them with drop kick murphy's a couple years ago. That was my first time hearing their music. The music was great. We will be seeing them again in concert in August with Green day. Looking forward to it.
Live set is always tight, a machine… watched them 3 times in different years throughout 15 years, always great
echoes of Its the End of the World as We Know It by REM - not just the fast verses but the chord changes before the 'we're gonna live forever'
I only have Rancid's "And out come the Wolves" album but it's such a great punk and ska album (really into ska myself).
Great revue of a great punk band,I love it!!!
Still one of my favourite bands to see live. Twice at the Barrowlands in Glasgow, and both times they were brilliant.
Yes, I've always noticed that they had a bit of an British punk sound despite having also having an otherwise California ska/punk vibe. Man, I miss the 90s.
Thank you for an AWESOME Kansas City show and VIP experience!
Matt Freemans bass lines got me an easy A in Music GCSE practicals. Legend
great show in san francico !!!thanks !!
Tuning guitars is soo 90’s 😂 Awesome breakdown as always 🤘🔥🤘
I hate picking favorites but I put Rancid as my #1. Nearly all of their albums I can listen to front to back without ever skipping a song. Most bands I can only do that with one of their albums. All of their side projects are worth listening to as well.
Rancid rarely disappoints.
Funny you mention them looking scary 😂 Lars is such a sweetheart.
I love them. Saw them live a month ago. Was awesome.
Rancid has always been proper. And their latest album is one of my favorites of '23. A truly great band. Good dudes, too 🍻
Edit: Awesome Taylor jacket by the way.
The first Rancid album i ever heard was And Out Come The Wolves way back in the nineties, a brilliant album it is.
Any album that opens with something like Maxwell Murder is gonna be special!
@@812tomparkthe first self titled Rancid album is all songs like Maxwell Murder. No crappy Lars lyrics or his weak guitar solos. Just awesome bass shredding in every song.
@@60degreelobwedge82 yehhh Rats in the Hallway and Detroit, awesome.
Same here, I got that and a sublime twentieth century masters greatest hits at the same time back when we had the old timey compact discs, bums me out the emo kids kinda claimed rancid cuz they have one of the best bassists out there and Matt’s powerhouse in his own right, lol maxwell murder was one of those baselines I had to learn as a guitarist lol
@@bobhope4949 checkout the bassline to Adina from the first self titled album. That thing is a ridiculous walking bassline/fingering and double picking exercise on meth.
First video ive ever watched of yours. First time i saw Rancid was Wolverhampton civic hall on Out Come the Wolves tour and the last time was Manchester O2 academy last year. Fantastic band. For me its Lets go. Thats the album but some other grade A classics in their output too.
New album is great, saw them in 96 before I knew much about them, loved them ever since 🤟😊👌
You hit the nail on the head when you said they sound like The Clash as they were heavily influenced by them.
Excellent end in your tune!
It's punk Jim but not as we know it...😂 You're the best.
I have liked it the song, i will check it.
To finish my comment, i ask you two pettitions:
-Please, record the "Dan's song" and add lyrics to we can read and listen property (people like me)
- We are needing more details about your bromance with Rufus but in short videos 😊, with music and all that stuff.
I'm gonna go on record and admit, that I didn't like your stuff at first, and the reason is simple. I was too dumb to appreciate your humor, and mistook it for arrogance. So I apologise for my ignorant comments on other videos, that you probably laughed off, if you even read them. Your channel is great, and props on the Taylor Hawkins tribute! Great stuff, I'm gonna go ahead and subscribe now
Punk geniuses. And one of the only big punk bands not to sell out. Legends. Check out Lars’s hardcore punk side band Lars Fredriksen & The Bastards 🤙🏻
While their music hasn't really 'grabbed' me, they put on a hell of a live show. Saw them at Louder Than Life festival a couple of weeks back and I'd say it was one of the best sets I saw over the 4 days. Punk as it should be, good stuff Rancid.
Listen to the bass solo in Maxwell Murder. Who needs a guitar solo?
Loved this!
I still have my old Rancid cassette tapes 😂 They’ve always been my favorite punk band!
Justin, see if you could get an interview with Steve Jones - that would be epic. I'm guessing you've read his book (Lonely Boy) and/or watched Pistol
32 years of Rancid,Oh man I'm already that old.I remember playing the new "Life won't wait" Album when it came out from my open windows and the police came and fined me because I was too loud.
My first intro to Rancid and I loved it!
That was at the Ovo arena. I was there. Fckiny awesome band. Several rancid tattoos!!
Lets not forget, Tim also wrote most of Pink's Try This album. The lead single from that album, Trouble, was a leftover Rancid song from thr Indestructible sessions.
Ah, footage from their show at Graspop, you guys need to visit that festival again Justin!
Fun and crusty! Love Rancid
Rancid are such a deep wormhole you could go down. Out come the Wolves is an epic album a big punk/ska mix, also Born Frustrated, out of control...etc. Also an offshoot Lars Friedreksen and the bastards are well worth a listen
Hi justin, love the band going to see you in nottingham later in the year
Just wondered if you could put 3 tracks in a darkness setlist that rarely get played or would never get into a setlisy, what songs would you put in?
I personally would love to see mighty wings , million dollar strong and happiness (i am santa aswell lol)
Thanks jack
Life won't wait
Yes like others have said Rancid is one of the best punk bands of all time and very OG band too, they been around forever
Hi greedings from north germany.. 🍺✌️.. Vorever..! Try
:"Slime - mea culpa,, (about sexual abuse to children by church members, Here..).. *this Band exist since 1979...,cheers
"Excuse the tuning" - Not very punk
"I just won't tune it" - EXTREMELY punk
I was at the rancid party around the mid 90s they have been kickin ass for decades now
Operation Ivy!
Very Ramones-like! 😎🎸
And Out Comes The Wolves is a front to back all time record! Give it a spin.
Love Rancid! Proper punk! 🖤 Their South Park Season 2 episode “Chef Aid” is worth checking out 😂
Please cover something by The Flatliners! They’re a fantastic band that don’t get the recognition they deserve and I’d be interested to hear your thoughts.
You could do a more established song like ‘No Roads’ or a brand new release which is ‘Between Our Teeth’
There's this part of me that genuinely expects everyone to know 'time bomb' and is super surprised when people don't.
The leading riff sorta reminded me of "St. Jimmy" by Green Day when I first heard it; granted, they're not _that_ similar, but they certainly give off the same vibe. That's not to take away from the brilliance of the song, it's definitely very fun. But as a fan of both GD and Rancid, I couldn't help but make that connection.
Maybe you already know but Billie Joe could have joined Rancid at the start but he did Green Day instead, he wrote the Rancid song ‘Radio’ from the Let’s Go album.
Tim armstrong and matt freeman are legends. Underrated. Shoutout operation ivy
Yes if i heard that i would have said it was a UK punk band and yes very reminiscent of old school punk but maybe 80s like the Toy Dolls etc
Justin, can you please do a video on Stephen Wilson Jr. The song is called Year to be young 1994. For anyone who grew up in the 90's this song perfectly captures the nostalgia of that era and I think you and your listeners will enjoy it. It'd be interesting to hear your take on it as there's a nod to a certain 90's grunge band in the guitar playing. Thanks.
Reminds me of stiff little fingers White noise!!
Rancid are amazing
Rancid are an awesome band, I think that Joe Strummer and the Clash were influences on them. They’re one band who I’ve liked for years yet I’ve never seen them live.
They were. In the sound Radio they mentioned the clash. “Radio Clash, Magnificient Seven”
and Chuck berry
That semitone part that's like a glam song reminds me of Hang On To Yourself by David Bowie
Sweet 👍👍 Teenage Rampage
Lyrically punk before punk..
The flowery bass lines really go well with the static vocal verses. Length wise it should be longer. The album is stacked with these short songs that to me feel unfinished.
5:45 Sneering at country.
But I guess it depends on the tone, so glam might be more apt.
great band
FUCK YES. Rancid is ESSENTIAL punk. This is one of the most Rancid-y Rancid songs I've ever heard. The only thing that might be missing is an insane bass break from Matt, but you know, his playing on this is so perfect I don't even miss it.
well that was one of missions of Rancid, is to follow the Clash vibe
I’m here to rep their self-titled album from 2000 (commonly called “Rancid 2000” so as to distinguish it from their self-titled 1993 debut). Not to dismiss their 4 previous records, which are all brilliant in their own unique ways, and present a fascinating real-time look at a punk band exploring melody, slower tempos and all manner of non-punk things . But “Rancid 2000” shows that band, having mastered anthemic pop-punk and reggae inflected grooves, circling back around to their punk rock roots and sounding more ferocious than ever. It’s still got some earworms and anthems for the more mainstream-minded folks who’d stuck around since they broke big on MTV, but it’s truly about as savage a hardcore punk rock as the 21st century has yet produced. Cheggitout!
100% rancid fan, like the transplants also who is lead by Tim Armstrong, drums Travis barker and a Rob doing the hip hop and hard-core parts
Rancid is the best.
Would love to see you give Bob Vylan some coverage, Justin, they/he really doing some exciting things in the modern punk realm...and for the genius name.
That piece about taking a piss on Glam. (One fret switch thing). It's from Eddy Cochran. Punk was also bringing back rock n roll instead of songs like Inna gadda da vida.
Tim Armstrong solo stuff is quite good also
This sounds so much like Grade 2, a young band from the Isle of White who have had a lot of help and support from Rancid. They're signed to Rancids label and have toured with their. This actually sounds like Rancid have taken some influence from them and thats awesome.
If you like this, have a listen to Grade 2, this is very much their sound.
Should do a wrap up on NOFX🤘
reminds me of the Clash
The drum beats are really catchy
I think Tim and Lars can roll out of bed (guitar already in hand somehow) and write a new punk standard like this while taking their heart pills, feeding the dogs and getting the kiddos ready for school.
