I wouldn't mind the added ABV -- and it'd probably make the flavors a bit more robust -- but I do wonder how many folks who drink this on a daily basis would want that? It's a good question, though. Maybe they should consider making an imperial version, or a "double" version where they increase the ABV to 6-6.5% ABV. It'd be cool to see! Thanks for the thought-provoking comment! Cheers!
Great review Joe. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve had this one. I remember not bing a big fan. I’ve came more around to the bock style though. I may have to have a redo on it. Haha. Looking forward to your macro Mondays, should be interesting. Cheers, Bro!
Yeah, man. This was never great to me, but it was solid for what it is. Since you've come around on the style, I'd love to see you review this one and give it another go. It's cheap enough where even if you don't like it, at least you didn't break the bank, haha! I'm curious to see how Macro Mondays go, too. We'll see, I guess. Thanks, Jay! Cheers!
If you can grab a single, it's most definitely worth it. Very SA Boston Lager or Yuengling Lager-like. Not in flavor, per see, just how it's a step up from macro lagers, in general. Cheers again, Jeff!
Shiner Bock has become my go-to beer for any occasion. It's especially good while grilling about anything (I usually go for brats). And also give a try to Shiner No. 79, their Bavarian Black Lager.
I've never seen the No. 79, but thanks for the tip! I'll definitely keep my eye out for it. I agree about the Bock. It's a damn solid beer, and one for any occasion. Thanks for the comment, Jerry! Cheers!
I bought a 6 pack of this on sale for $5 at the one day sale at Vons grocery store last week (great deal). I wish they would put the BB date and the abv on the bottles but they don't put either. Cheers.
Yeah, the no ABV thing bothers me, but at the same time, a lot of New York breweries do the same. I found out they actually put a date on the bottle, but it's near the bottom and mine was cutoff, so I couldn't make it out, but it's definitely on there. It shows up well on my Shiner Trail Ale. Just weird where they put it and how it looks. Cheers, Ralph!
Nice! Yeah, I could totally see that. I think they're similar to me, but Shiner Bock is definitely more expensive. If we factored in price, I'd definitely pick Yuengling. Thanks, Brandon! Cheers!
I was stationed in Texas for 7-8 months and this was on tap everywhere. It’s like the Bud Light of Texas. It was typically the first beer I ordered whenever I went into a restaurant or bar. It’s not something I pick up anymore but it’s a solid go-to when somewhere that doesn’t have micro craft beer. Great review as always! Cheers, Joe!
No doubt, Michael! It's definitely the regional "go to" craft beer in that area. I think it's pretty good for what it is. Definitely in the realm of Yuengling Lager and Samuel Adams Boston Lager. Glad to hear you enjoy it for what it is, dude! Thanks, buddy! Cheers!
This is like 10 or 11 bucks around here. Way too expensive for a thin and watery beer you can just down a 6 pack of easily. Genny Cream Ale is like 5 bucks a six pack around here. I have no idea why there's such a price gap between these 2 but there is.
That is primarily the reason I'd drink Genesee Cream Ale over this or Yuengling here locally. The price point definitely matters. That said, I think I prefer the taste of this or Yuengling over the Cream Ale, especially if I'm only having one or two. It is crazy the price gap is that big, but I think Shiner Bock is on the Samuel Adams level when it comes to "prestige" and its history, therefore it's a bit more expensive. Whether or not we agree with it, just how it is. Good thing there's options for us. Cheers, Chaz!
I've reviewed the Yuengling Porter, Robert. I actually prefer this beer and the Traditional Lager over it. I think it's a good value porter, for sure, but I don't love it. Glad you enjoy it, though!
I dig some Shiner Bock. Nice to have a Bock beer available all year long. It’s just a nice drinking beer, that pairs nicely with BBQ. Most of my local breweries brew Bocks this time of year and that’s it. In fact August Schell’s Bockfest is this weekend and is damn good time. I recommend watching some videos on the event and the art of Bock Poking. Interesting that you mentioned Czech Dark lagers as one of your favorites at the moment. Shiner, Tx has a decent population of Czech/Bohemian immigrants from back in the day. So the influence is definitely there. They still brew a dark larger called Shiner Bohemian Black Lager. Prost, Na zdraví, cheers. 🍻
I'll have to check out those videos, Dan! Didn't know that about Shiner, TX ... but it makes sense. I enjoy this one for what it is, for sure. Is it the best Bock I've ever had? Definitely not, but it's readily available and reasonably priced. It's definitely nice to have one available all year long, for sure. Thanks, Dan! Cheers!
I don't think it's dull, but it's not amazing. That said, for the price point, it's pretty good. I have not tried their Märzen, but I totally would give it a go. Cheers, Josh!
Great touch 👏 leaving the top of the bottlecap visible
Thanks, man! I love looking at the caps, too.
Cheers!
if they increased the abv to 6 this beer would be A+ !!! It would quickly become Americas most talked about beer !

You got it. Nice to come back to now and again.
No doubt. It's one of those beers that's a step up from macro lagers, and I'm happy there are others like this out there.
Cheers, Jeff!

I’ve never tried it, might need to get a bottle. Cheers! 🍻

It refreshing
It really is, Joe. Good beer overall, for sure.

Modelo negra > shiner bock. I picked a light bock for my first, haha, kinda let me down
I could see that. Definitely better Bocks out there, in general, but for the price point, I'm OK with it. Thanks for the comment!
Cheers!
Shiner Bock is my favorite beer. To me, it tastes cleaner and richer than Yuengling. It costs a bit more, though. Appreciate your reviews!
Nice! Yeah, I could totally see that. I think they're similar to me, but Shiner Bock is definitely more expensive. If we factored in price, I'd definitely pick Yuengling. Thanks, Brandon!

Cheers 🍻 Joe.i love this beer 🍺
Awesome to hear, Josh!
Cheers, brother!

This beer is straight dull. It feels like its missing something, i wanna try the Marzen however.
