I was lucky enough to do sound for this. The guys were consummate professionals and still sound great after all these years. And they were all super friendly and easy to work with.
Pat, Tom and John can still bring it! Doobies a rare brand that had equally talented lead men with Tom and Michael providing two distinct sounds. One of my top five bands of all time along with the Eagles, Steely Dan, CSN@Y, and Chicago!
In the 70's ... I would drive in my sales district which included all of West Texas and the Southern 1/2 of New Mexico. It was miles and miles of nothing but miles and miles. It was the Doobie Brothers that allowed me to maintain sanity. GOD BLESS THESE GUYS.
That's the Original Doobies sound - unreal. So good, so cool. They were great with Michael McDonald, but in a much different way. I love the guitars driving the whole style, as Tom J brought
I consider it a fortunate thing to have been raised with this music playing on the radio, and then seeing them in 1979 on tour.... Black Water live was an event of its own with the audience and the Bros doing a call and response Band: I'd like to hear some funky Dixie land...pretty mama gonna take me by the hand Audience: By the hand hand, take me by the hand pretty mama, gonna dance with ya daddy, all night long. Everyone on the audience knew it back then, even the casual attendees
Love that bassline...,Porter probably thought these up after dreaming he could play half as good as Jamerson...,which is actually a sideways complement (to be mentioned in the same sentence as JJ is an honor). Porters lines are busy but in the studio sound really punchy and energetic with syncopation being a prime ingredient...,since both guitarists were in sync most of the time Porter really filled in the leading tones - he added direction and movement. BTW this bassist is not T Porter Rex - but I think Cowan would applaud the bass parts he inherited.
@@TheGribblesnitchJohn Cowan is the guy on the left playing the bass. He’s been with them for quite some time. Check out his voice as a solo artist and with the Newgrass Revival!

One of the all time greatest songs to play or hear. It is engaging, complex, simple, energetic, positive, a true pleasure. Well done!
