    I remember very well back in the '80s when people didn't have much respect for BOSS. I was scratching my head and thinking why? What's going on here? Now in 2023 everyone realizes these pedals are darned good. Fantastic company.

    So it's a gate that uses the direct guitar signal to detect whether to activate for the best, most accurate gating logic, but the gate itself is actually activated in the effects loop, so when the gate is on, literally the entire rig goes silent. Very cool. Sidechain gate detection is definitely the best way to go with high gain and noise gates.

    I'm glad you let us peak behind the curtain and hear the hum in your rig. Recording next to a PC and home studio gear is a nightmare, especially with single coils.
    I thought you had some magic setup, but you struggle just like the rest of us!
    Thanks Pete, your down to earth approach is what brings me back again and again. Well, that and the awesome tunes you crank out!

    Yep BOSS, them da BOSS. Been using them since the 80's and still have at least 3 on my board. Very well explained, as usual Mr Thorn, I wish you were around when I was struggling to learn what all these pedals did and how to combined and utilise them.

    It seems like every guitarist testing noise suppression/gates turns into a super staccato player, when the true test of a noise suppressor is how it performs while a note sustains past the gate closing

    I have a fender 2007 custom shop Stratocaster and cleaned up a lot of noise by replacing by dirty loose 5 way switch, I notice my tuner is no longer all over the place and stays steady when tuning, a lot of noise is gone and my sound improved greatly , I do have one of these if I need it, love that guitar 😊

    Boss should have made a mode for noise removal - like the ISP Hum Extractor - because all these gates can't remove noise from quieter parts or edge of breakup tones. As a digital pedal, Boss had the opportunity here, and the technology could do this with the right algorithm. Pete, please demo the ISP Hum Extractor. Great playing as always.

    • @Fitzpa14
      @Fitzpa14 6 місяців тому +5

      This pedal has three modes; Gate, Reduction and Mute. Pretty sure the Reduction mode does what you’re wanting.
      Also isn’t the ISP Hum Extractor like 2.5 times the price?

    • @mrtruefifth
      @mrtruefifth 6 місяців тому +1

      @@Fitzpa14 I hear the reduction mode as a gate function. The ISP Hum Extractor uses an algorithm to remove cycle hum from the core tone - so not by a noise gating function, but by noise 'removal' aka 'extraction', making it possible to play e.g. single coils without a lot of the noise you can get with single coil pickups. Boss could have taken the market if they made a similar algorithm for a lower price, in a much smaller pedal. It's only a matter of an algorithm, with the Boss NS1X already being a digital pedal.

    I'm incredibly impressed with how flexible the settings are on this new Boss NS1X! I have used a couple of different noise reducers over the last few years, but they usually just have one method of reduction that is closer to gating. This Boss pedal seems to have a lot more options than the other suppressors allowing you the method of noise reduction or gating. I really think that I might have to pick this pedal up, just because of how many options to really customize it. I like that you can still allow a bit of background noise, just attenuate it enough that it isn't completely the waterfall. One thing that drives me bonkers is a noise reduction that I have to play around with for a long time to get it to sound natural for guitar and not like a standard noise gate. This Boss NS1X sounds really good and it doesn't seem to affect your tone at all. I started with Boss in the late 1980s and as more time goes on, I am almost coming back full circle again to the effect brand I started with. Really Boss has been knocking it out of the park over the last few years. Very cool! Thanks. Pete for the awesome demo!

    Pete - understanding that the best way to use this is both in front of the amp and in the effects loop, if I have a couple of pedals in front of the amp, should I have the send of the pedal into the pedal chain (and the front of the amp)? Or is it best in that case to have the pedal connected at the end of the pedal chain into the front of the amp? Thanks!

      Smart gate is great and I have used it for years, I actually have one in my guitar vault on tour just in case I get into a really noisy venue. But this will work both in front and in the loop as I demonstrate in the video, which is more like a Decimator and works to quiet Amp hiss as well as the stuff getting in the front end.

    A lot of that buzz is coming from the ground loop created by using the gate in the four cable method. I have one of these and found I had to overcompensate with the gate to make up for the buzz it was creating. If you use an isolation transformer between the gate send and the amp input, it reduces the hum a lot so you can run the gate at lower settings.

    Your computer screen(s) and camera are causing most of that noise. I have the same issue. I have to turn around when I record if I'm sitting in front of my computer. I also use a gate if need be but facing away from the screen cuts the noise down a lot. I don't create content for a UA-cam channel so if my back faces my sh*t I don't care. You obviously need to face the camera. Here's an idea, print out a life size photo of your face and affix it to the back of your head, or chair, in some form or fashion. So if you have to turn your back to the camera we'll still see your handsome face and square jawline. 🤨

      @thebadcat69 6 місяців тому +1

      Weird, my reply vanished. In my experience computer screens definitely contribute to the noise level if you're sitting near them and facing the pickups towards them. When you turned away from your screen and camera in the video the noise level dropped a bit. At 4:47 you mentioned the quietest spot was facing your wall. I'm not saying the computer screen is creating all of it, but it definitely contributes to it. I've been watching your channel for a long time I really enjoy it. I used to play professionally myself. You can check my two audio clips out. I only mention that so you don't assume I'm a hack playing a Fisher Price guitar.
