Look, maybe or maybe not, but the Angels, (mostly prospects trying to impress the club) did not need reasons to thump people. Also, the Dead were friends with the San Fran chapter of the Angels. Everyone knows it was groups from San Jose and such and their prospects that the Dead didn't even know did most of the damage. The SF chapter guys were hanging with the band, especially Keith backstage at his trailer and on the stage mostly having a decent time and not really involved one way or another with the fighting as Sam Cutler asked one of them if he could stop them and the guy said, hey, some people just like to bust heads, and did a line of coke with him and walked away. 4:01 Werewolf dude is def on acid, picking up on all the bad vibes. He's become a receptacle for the seething negativity permeating the event. I've experienced this exact sort of thing while tripping on acid at concerts that had super bad mojo going around.
Just to clarify once and for all as I see this error constantly - the Angel on stage is NOT Sonny Barger! The Angel staring at Mick is the President of the San Francisco Chapter of the HA's - Bob Roberts. He has FRISCO on the front of his Cut! It was Frisco Pete (Pete Knell) who lost out the Presidency of the Frisco HA's to Roberts who took the $500 beer money from the Stones manager, Cutler ... and agreed that the HA's would sit on the edge of the stage and stop people fucking with the Generators. That was all ... Barger was there with other California Angels but it was the Frisco Angels President, Bob Roberts, who was in charge of the stage Security when the Stones played, along with a bunch of Patch Over prospects from a nearby Club that were there to prove their worth to the Frisco Chapter. You can see the Prospects wearing plain brown Cuts ... some with no logo on the back, some with only a Rocker and not Full Patch. These were Frisco Prospects and the HA (Alan Passaro) that killed Meredith Hunter was that night a Prospect for the Frisco HA's. Bob Roberts later stated that Pete Knell had no right to take money and make a deal with the Stones for the concert in the name of the Frisco HA's since at that time he was no longer President. The Frisco HA's along with Bob Roberts informed the OTHER HA Clubs about the event and they in turn showed up during the day. In earlier footage of the day you can see Barger's crew actually helping and guiding people off the stage (Earlier performances) and not being violent - things got nasty because people in the crowd began knocking their Bikes over and getting out of control near the stage - the deal was that the Angels were to keep people from encroaching on the stage and that's what they did. Passaro also stopped Mick Jagger becoming a dead singer ...
Are you sure that the angel in question was not Ralph (Sonny) Barger?...i'm sure that near Keith Richards there was Terry the Tramp and another angel that had his face covered by an animal face....
@@gregbernstein6430 The one thing he didn't mention, well a few things, but he got it better than most people is; The Angel parked their bikes in front of that tiny 3 foot stage and by many accounts, when the Stones took the stage, people rushed to the front to get closer. What do you expect to happen to the bikes? They should have parked the in back of the stage as there was a line of tractor trailers making a buffer zone backstage. One of many things not thought out very well.
You ve got to love Mick, the shrewdest, most cynical guy ever, trying to talk hippie jargon to calm a crowd of drunk speedfreaks and feisty stoned Keith, probably cringing at mick’s “ brothers and sisters “ rap, ready to add himself to the fracas. BUT the bootleg reveals a kick ass performance under duress. They actually played a strong show.
Only perpetual adolescents love Mick Jagger, the Rock "Bad Boy" who has a queasy stomach for violence and is so naive as to think Hell's Angels can be placated by his Church Lady bit. 550,000 GIs were in Vietnam that night, doing the heavy lifting for a generation of spoiled children.
Thing is the Stones did a free show in England before this. 150,000 people showed up from what i heard there was no violence, and no problems whatsoever. Whoever set up the logistics for this Alamonte speedway free show for the Stones obviously fucked up royally on all levels. A true tragedy that didn't need to happen.
KLB, I agree - and I don't like the last shot of Mick's at all! It suggests that Mick and the Stones are the sole culprits! That's clearly wrong. This nightmare built up slowly and had multiple reasons!
Y'all too stupid to get that Mick Jagger is an arrogant, spineless and clueless bum, his pathetic simpering to a mad crowd shows for all to see his real impotence and terrible judgement, the HA had been beating up people before the Stones got there, he should have bailed when he had the chance but he really wanted to prance. The black shadow of the "Love Generation" still poisons our society. To think we had 550 thousand soldiers in Vietnam, dying every day while this was going on makes me want to puke. Hells Angels, I'm sure its amphetemines and booze then against the acid heads of Frisco, With some hard rockin music for a soundtrack. All the ingredients for mayhem.
Hammer44head, I agree! This was totally different from Woodstock. And the music of the Stones is not exactly peaceful and calming! It's a fitting soundtrack for the scenes of violence at Altamont, which was heading towards a disaster from the very beginning. It was a "Bitches Brew" - pun intended! It's actually surprising that there weren't more casualties!
The event was also very badly organized! The Stones had decided to give a free concert very late into their US Tour, because they have been criticized for the high prices for the tickets. And originally the concert was supposed to be in the Golden Gate Park. But this wasn't greenlighted, and it was decided just three days before the concert to use the Altamont race track, although it wasn't very well suited for a concert which would draw such a big crowd: the areal was sloped towards the location where the stage was set up. This had the effect that the crowd naturally gravitated towards the stage, which was also unusually low. Throw the Hell's Angels, alcohol, speed, a just 18 years old guy with a loaded gun and high on meth into the pot, add the right soundtrack - and it's almost guaranteed that it will boil over! It is always mentioned that the victim Meredith Hunter was a black guy, while the fact that he was high on meth and drew a loaded gun is often mentioned as a mere afterthought. I suspect that it was the other way round: the Angels had to take him out in order to prevent a blood bath, but they might have overreacted because Hunter was black. I also wonder if the Angels were subconsciously pissed off because Hunter had a white girlfriend. And it's possible that Hunter felt he needed a gun for protection because he was black, and the concert crowd as well as the Hell's Angels were predominantly white. The tragedy had many causes, and it's wrong to reduce Hunter's death to a simple black vs. white antagonism.
@@davisworth5114 , I don't understand your question. I clearly stated that I think the main reasons for the Altamont disaster were picking an unsuitable location, bad organizarion, employing the Hells Angels for security services, although they had no training whatsoever ,and paying them with beer!. And when Meredith Hunter whose judgement was impaired by a high quantity of meth, pulled a gun, he created a very dangerous situation for himself and everybody else. The Hell's Angels had to react. That's what they were hired for. There's a long list of facts which led to Hunter's death. Most of the facts I named had nothing to do with racial tensions. But it's possible that Hunter, who as far as I know, had no history of violence, felt the need to bring a gun because he had been warned before the concert that there could be problems because he was black. It's also possible that the Hell's Angels may have overreacted when Hunter was pinned down onto the floor because he was black. But we will never know what would've happened if Hunter had been a white guy! I clearly said that there were many reasons why the Altamont disaster happened!
Danke!
Stones arguably better live than recorded, Taylor and Richards give it a vibe that hasn't been repeated since imo, best lineup, even though Brian Jones is my favourite stone
I was there hiked in the night before and hiked out the morning after. The whole concert as a whole was unbelievable! I was on a hill back from the stage with a great view. The fighting was awful but as long as you were not right up front, the only issue was the music being stopped a couple of times. The man that was kilked because he pulled a gun on a Hells Angel. I was woke up in the morning of the festival at sunset by Carlos Santana playing a solo his guitar. The rest of the day was an awesome music scene, with one band after another. The stage area could have been handled better but it was not for the life of me I still to this day do not understand why people kept charging the stage. That was what caused all the fighting. Over all i had the time of my life and am so glad I went! ✌️😎
Was shite, way to slow needed to ramp up the tempo. No one was dancing, just pushing and shoving. What the fuk was Mr.Green thinking??? My reckoning is he was looking for a quick way out or looking to put harm on others, standing in amongst the boys then pulling a weapon out. Condolences to the family. Nothing to do with race, his intent was premeditated from the start the silly young fuk.
By now the mayhem around the "stage" has begun. Can you really call a 3 foot high structure a stage? Something as simple as that stage height may have been the root of all the problems: all day people were pushing at it and trying to get onto it. The Hells Angels were taking each attempt personally. Had the stage been higher, who knows how much different things would have been..... There is a Meredith Hunter sighting at 1:46. He is standing upright by the stage, maybe a little high, unmistakable in his lime green suit. Then at 6:15 is the remarkable footage of him getting stabbed.
Oh man, this had disaster written all over it from the start. Just by watching this video, you can feel the unstableness of the crowd. The Woodstock crowd looked totally different. Maybe more higher than this one? Idk. Thanks for the comment!
@@Scottocaster6668 So so true.....The crowd tends to act as ''one'', like some creature.....It ceases to be individuals when it is rammed together like that. I'd have hated tripping in that morass of edgy people..
It wasn't their idea. They had very little to do with the organisation of the concert. The Grateful Dead were already planning a free concert along with The Jefferson Airplane. The Stones hitched onto the idea thinking it would be a good way to end their American tour. It was The Dead's manager Rock Scully who suggested that the hells angels be used as 'security'. I believe The Stones were like, Uh, well, it worked at Hyde Park so why not...different kind of hells angel in the UK. No one is really to blame. It was a balls up from the get go. If it had been held in Golden Gate Park, which was the original venue, this wouldn't have happened.
@@AnthonyMonaghan Just imagine what the Black Panthers would have done to a White dude if he pulled a gun at a Jimi Hendrix concert. Same motherfucking thing. The gun wasn't loaded. Merideth Hunter had already been beaten in the face by HA's for sitting on a stack of speakers. He was carrying it to ward off problematic A holes like them. It is said the Merideth never fired, or aimed his gun at the stage. He only pulled it out in self defense from being attacked by the HA.. Just like so many others were.
Exactly. The urban legend that has grown that the Angel "saved" Mick's life is bs. They were beating on Hunter and all Hunter could do was pull his gun out.
@@LudiCrust. There are people everywhere. it would be impossible to not have somebody cross the muzzle line. He still has a right to defend himself from violent attack. Exactly like Mr. Rittenhouse did.
@@LudiCrust. You're right, but tragically, I believe he was pointing it at the Angels he was fighting with, and they get off scot free as heroes where all day some of them were just bashing heads. Isn't that what all the 2A people say?
Check the HA behind Hunter when he’s shown on the side/ front of the stage. Supposedly Hunter had been attacked before this.He doesn’t look agitated at this point, just trying to get up close. According to the main witness who was a very brave and honest person this is when the HA started pulling his hair and ear and punched Hunter in the mouth and they started chasing him. I really don’t think he is with his girlfriend at this point and he pulls out the gun to scare the HA away. As he gets beside Patty look at the bottom of the screen and you see the angel keying in on his movements and when he gets passed Patty he is ready to stab Hunter. He never stood a chance, and when they started the beating and face kicking he was doomed. The witness said he was three feet away when all this went down and helped carry him to the stage .Joel Selvin said there’s pictures of him being put upon the stage, well it certainly isn’t in the movie. You would have seen his green suit which stood out so brightly unless that was cut completely out. The B/W pictures do not show it.I have researched this whole thing for years and there isn’t a lot about it except the movie , books which are just rehash of what we know and now this latest book by Joel which was well written but when you see his interviews he gets all worked up and I am not impressed. He is not sincere and Sam Cutler is making it up as he goes to cover his ass. There I’ve said it and let’s stop with the telling over and over again that Hunter was high on meth. Everyone was high on something and if you ever went to a dance or concert and had a gang after you for nothing or your race and you had a pistol what would you do. There was nothing for protection because the protection is trying to kick your head in. It’s a scary feeling , Rock Scully said he saw him charge the stage 2-3 times and aim his gun at Jagger, bull crap ! He was running to be saved and no body would help him so theygrabbed him and took him back into the dark ! All this is on film that has either been destroyed or in hiding. RIP Merideth Curly Hunter
I've been searching for more truthful info on what went down and what you're saying makes more sense and sounds way more accurate than the BS I've seen and heard thus far. Thank you. RIP Merideth Hunter...
Julie if you read the story by Chip Monk he reveals how he designed the stage and where he had it placed it very interesting. He also argued with the HA about the stage carpet he wanted returned and they knocked his front teeth 🦷 out . He finally had to barter with Sonny to get it back ! If you have anything to share on this subject Julie I’d love to read/ see it ,seeing we are on the same page. Thanks

The Hells Angels aren't really there for security, that's bullshit! They're there for free beer and smoke, to pick up chicks and who's going to stop them from getting in free?
The angels were too drunk, and those who weren't full fledged were also pledges and were also given booze so the situation even in the angles sphere wasn't good from the start either

Chris Auten one where were the security pre checks before they let people in or that close? Two if the hells angels would have stop attacking people he may not have pulled it out. @@LudiCrust. You heard it from "people that were friends with some of the Hells Angels". What do you think they were going to say? There was a trial going on. The dude with the animal hat. Just saying that Hunter got caught up in one of many tussles and drew his gun at the Angels, not the Stones. Why in the middle of a fight would you randomly pull a gun and try to shoot some other person you aren't fighting with?

Don't blame the substance blame who uses it
Just to clarify once and for all as I see this error constantly - the
Angel on stage is NOT Sonny Barger! The Angel staring at Mick is the
President of the San Francisco Chapter of the HA's - Bob Roberts. He has
FRISCO on the front of his Cut! It was Frisco Pete (Pete Knell) who
lost out the Presidency of the Frisco HA's to Roberts who took the $500
beer money from the Stones manager, Cutler ... and agreed that the HA's
would sit on the edge of the stage and stop people fucking with the
Generators. That was all ... Barger was there with other California
Angels but it was the Frisco Angels President, Bob Roberts, who was in
charge of the stage Security when the Stones played, along with a bunch
of Patch Over prospects from a nearby Club that were there to prove
their worth to the Frisco Chapter. You can see the Prospects wearing
plain brown Cuts ... some with no logo on the back, some with only a
Rocker and not Full Patch. These were Frisco Prospects and the HA (Alan
Passaro) that killed Meredith Hunter was that night a Prospect for the
Frisco HA's. Bob Roberts later stated that Pete Knell had no right to
take money and make a deal with the Stones for the concert in the name
of the Frisco HA's since at that time he was no longer President. The
Frisco HA's along with Bob Roberts informed the OTHER HA Clubs about the
event and they in turn showed up during the day. In earlier footage of
the day you can see Barger's crew actually helping and guiding people
off the stage (Earlier performances) and not being violent - things got
nasty because people in the crowd began knocking their Bikes over and
getting out of control near the stage - the deal was that the Angels
were to keep people from encroaching on the stage and that's what they
did. Passaro also stopped Mick Jagger becoming a dead singer ...
The Velo In The Vale thank you, and please tell more
who cares there just a bunch of codependent .......
Are you sure that the angel in question was not Ralph (Sonny) Barger?...i'm sure that near Keith Richards there was Terry the Tramp and another angel that had his face covered by an animal face....
Thank you for your clarification velo!

Jagger has never been cool, he's a poser.

@@sabineb.5616 so why are you trying to do it?
Danke! How many people did they squeeze into that helicopter when they made their escape.?

He's also sideways at 0:07 on the left side of the screen. Look for the suit and the hat. Just a couple of seconds but he's there.
Oh man, this had disaster written all over it from the start. Just by watching this video, you can feel the unstableness of the crowd. The Woodstock crowd looked totally different. Maybe more higher than this one? Idk. Thanks for the comment!

a concert full of love but hells angels are the security team,so smart.the stones cant do it worse.
He was running for his life when he was taken down. He wasn't going to shoot anyone and he damn sure didn't deserve to die. It's a goddam shame.
You can see him on camera pointing it at someone directly in front of the stage. It doesn’t matter that he wasn’t targeting Jagger.

Did Patty ever speak on it?
Julie if you read the story by Chip Monk he reveals how he designed the stage and where he had it placed it very interesting. He also argued with the HA about the stage carpet he wanted returned and they knocked his front teeth 🦷 out . He finally had to barter with Sonny to get it back ! they got paid in beer is one story going around. drunk bikers was never going to be good.
The guys with the pool cues doing the beating at the start are what's known as prospects. They have the bottom rocker with the club location on it but not the death head or the top 'Hells Angels' rocker. These guys are still trying to impress, to prove their worth to the club. Probably why they were doing what they were doing.
This was a free concert. And the HA were given beer as payment? None of that makes sense. Barger's not that stupid.
