    This film is a great argument for responsible law and order in society- if there were professional security guards at this concert, it would merely be remembered as a poorly organized one-day festival. Moreover, there is an atmosphere of people sinking into drugs, sex and despair throughout it (not to mention the sociopathic violence of the Angels). Altamont seems to be the dark mirror of the pleasant libertine atmosphere of Woodstock- and only 4 months later. It seems as though the dreams of 65-67 in Frisco had already died by December of 69 - this is just the funeral.

    • @sabineb.5616
      @sabineb.5616 4 роки тому +6

      Tommy Baggerman, it was probably not the brightest idea to hire the Hell's Angels as security guards and pay them with beer! However, the mood of the crowd was much more skittish, darker and less peaceful than at Woodstock. It's surprising that there haven't been more tragedies. It's wrong to blame everything on the Hell's Angels!

    • @sabineb.5616
      @sabineb.5616 4 роки тому +2

      @Albert Dibari , we cannot know for sure what kind of intentions Meredith Hunter really had. Considering that he was loaded with meth he himself might not have known what he wanted to do. Maybe, he didn't intend to shoot at the Stones. But when Hunter pulled that loaded gun it could have ended in a disaster! It's very possible that Alan Passaro prevented a blood bath and a panic reaction of the large crowd. However, he seems to have overreacted when he stabbed Hunter five times into the back. As soon as Hunter was pinned to the ground and the gun was secured, Passaro should've stopped. But we shouldn't forget he wasn't a trained professional security guard. It's hard to know when enough is enough!
      I have a huge problem with the idea that Hunter was a victim of latent racism, and that he might not have been stabbed to death if he had been white. There's no indication at all that this is true. Hunter was only 18 years old, and his death is very tragic - but when he took all this meth and pulled a loaded gun in a crowd of 300000 people, he may have signed his own death warrant.
      That said, it wasn't a very bright Idea to use the Hell's Angels as security guards - exactly because they weren't trained to handle very dangerous situations like this professionally!

    • @sabineb.5616
      @sabineb.5616 4 роки тому +2

      @Albert Dibari , why do you blame solely the Stones? When they were playing they definitely tried to de-escalate the situation. I think that there are many factions which are responsible for the disaster, because the whole event was so poorly planned and organized. The Altamont Speedway wasn't suited for an event which would draw such a large crowd, the stage was too low and the Hell's Angels weren't trained security stuff. Having them there with their bikes and paying them with beer was asking for trouble! But to be fair to the Stones who were very naive - the Grateful Dead , who were originally scheduled to play, too, had recommended to use the Hell's Angels who were their buddies! Unfortunately the Stones didn't know a lot about the mentality of the American Hell's Angels. The British wannabe Hell's Angels who had helped the Stones to guard a free concert in London's Hide Park, were very different from the American Angels!
      I think that there is not a sole culprit! But while the experience of latent racism throughout his life may have motivated Meredith Hunter to bring the gun in the first place, I do not think that his death can be explained by racism. When Hunter pulled that loaded gun, he turned himself into a huge security threat and he needed to be taken care of in order to prevent a looming blood bath. We will never know if the outcome would've been different if he had been white! It's interesting, though, that the short version of the Altamont tragedy goes like that :
      "The Stones were playing "Sympathy For The Devil" which motivated the Hell's Angels to murder a young man because he was black. And The Stones didn't even stop playing because they didn't care!"
      But non of these statements is true! The truth is much more complicated!

    Just to clarify once and for all as I see this error constantly - the Angel on stage is NOT Sonny Barger! The Angel staring at Mick is the President of the San Francisco Chapter of the HA's - Bob Roberts. He has FRISCO on the front of his Cut! It was Frisco Pete (Pete Knell) who lost out the Presidency of the Frisco HA's to Roberts who took the $500 beer money from the Stones manager, Cutler ... and agreed that the HA's would sit on the edge of the stage and stop people fucking with the Generators. That was all ... Barger was there with other California Angels but it was the Frisco Angels President, Bob Roberts, who was in charge of the stage Security when the Stones played, along with a bunch of Patch Over prospects from a nearby Club that were there to prove their worth to the Frisco Chapter. You can see the Prospects wearing plain brown Cuts ... some with no logo on the back, some with only a Rocker and not Full Patch. These were Frisco Prospects and the HA (Alan Passaro) that killed Meredith Hunter was that night a Prospect for the Frisco HA's. Bob Roberts later stated that Pete Knell had no right to take money and make a deal with the Stones for the concert in the name of the Frisco HA's since at that time he was no longer President. The Frisco HA's along with Bob Roberts informed the OTHER HA Clubs about the event and they in turn showed up during the day. In earlier footage of the day you can see Barger's crew actually helping and guiding people off the stage (Earlier performances) and not being violent - things got nasty because people in the crowd began knocking their Bikes over and getting out of control near the stage - the deal was that the Angels were to keep people from encroaching on the stage and that's what they did.

    I cant believe its 50 yrs when this disastrous concert happened in Altamont.
    It was the most terrible disaster in rock n roll 60s history, fans got ran over in their sleeping bags by cars, multiple births in the concert, multiple cars were abandonded & stolen, multiple went for medical from bad drugs to blisters, a youth drowned when he fell into a swiftly moving irrigation canal, multiple got killed in hit & run, multiple were injured & also there was an extensive property damage at altamont, & not to mention multiple people got high on drugs become violent by fighting while the stones perform & tried to tell fans to stop but then finally couldn't stop & some fan name meredith carried a gun to shoot the stones & finally the members of the hell's angels stab him in self defense.😱😱😱😱
    I was like shocked when I saw the old footage in that documentary film "GIMME SHELTER"

    • @bobjames8232

      Gisel Chaviano It was the Dead that told the stones that Angels were good at doing the security because of past concerts the Hells Angels worked for the Dead. So in return , the Stones picked the Angels and the price was right. Angels were paid in beer during the concert. A sign of the times that went horribly wrong.

    • @Noahsoak

    • @bobjames8232

      @@Noahsoak the band the Grateful Dead recommended that the Hells Angels work as Security at Altamont because they had done successful Security Jobs at previous Grateful Dead concerts in the past. That's how it came about. Also , the Angels agreed to be paid in beer. Cheap price for this magnitude.
