  • The Sound starts at 1 minute and 13 seconds. ;)
    This is a first contact video from the Waldorf Quantum Synthesizer which is one of a kind. It combines all kind of digital synthesis forms including waldorfs special wave technology with a dual analog filter in the stream. Finally the sound streams into 6 various optional effect processors and out it comes. Enjoy listening to some presets I randomly dropped into. All that you hear is what comes directly out of the waldorf output and is done without any mastering nor normalising. So beware of sounddynamic changes and high peaks sounds.
    Please feel free to subscribe and share my channel as well as video.

    Nothing is like a hardware synth, the intuitiveness, hands on, no disruptions, a constant flow of creativity. While I haven't slept in days, the synergy from my synthesizer and my hands playing its keys, twisting its knobs and moving its sliders is feeding and keeping me awoke. For those who rather use vsts, set aside money specifically for a hardware synth, let's say $1000 a year to experience the frontier of synthesis.

      Anyone who opened Omnisphere or other VST monster to see that updates are available, take 30 minutes to download update, then get an error on soundsource access that takes a day or so to debug, even partially will appreciate turning a switch on a fine piece of kit like this or even lessor synths and get into inspiration right now rather than losing inspiration over a technical glitch, an interface pop or noise, or CPU overload. I love my 20+ softsynths but when I want to get an idea working right now, I do not boot a computer, I turn on a synth or workstation. Hardware still rules for the player/ inspiration seeker. Softsynths are great for producers, for players, hardware has to be there.

    A nice synth where i'm not confined strictly to the gritty, funk, saw tooth sounds of a pure analog synth. So much versatility.

    Always those comparisons with the prophet X. All they have in common is the price tag. The X sounds more common, traditional.(Not bad at all...) This one is way more spacy and innovative, experimental.

    Nice demo. Yes, the price is a non-starter for regular people like me. But the swirling, glassy tones are transcendental and entirely distinct from an analog poly. Waldorf excels at other-worldly, bell-like tones, many of which are soothing to my ears (except the ones that clearly aim to be harsh). But I can respect people who just prefer a classic warm analog sound. It doesn't have to be an either-or, better-worse type thing. I aspire to own both Waldorf and Dave Smith synths eventually!

    I own a 30 voice XT and a microQ. The micro was preordered after listening to a Q keyboard at Sweetwater back in the day. It took Waldorf almost 2 years to fix the LFO sync to midi clock problem. I’ve read a lot of mixed reviews about the stability of the Blofeld, so it was never purchased. I would have been more than willing to get one and the sample addition, but the lack of follow through with the microQ was a real deterrent. I didn’t want a buggy or incomplete synth, again.
    The XT has been a dream. It is truly one of the best synths I’ve owned and played. The microQ sounds great, and works really well with the XT - and the eventual fix of the LFO bug was more than welcome. When the XT and microQ were purchased, they weren’t the most expensive synths on the market, but they were a couple of the best sounding.
    So, the question becomes: when this synth is released, does my $4500.00 purchase a ready-for-market product, or will it suffer the Waldorf reputation of “mainly functional” with updates that will arrive “soon” - which is what the developers said for 2 years when people on the forum would ask about basic bug fixes for the microQ? I haven’t checked on the reliability of the Blofeld for the past few months, but the last time I had a conversation with a buddy who plays live, he said he’d never use the Blofeld outside of the studio as it crashes unpredictability.
    So, if Waldorf can’t make an inexpensive synth reliable, then how can I trust them with a larger amount of money?
    This sounds good in this video. The hands on controls are obviously there. But this will not enter my studio “immediately,” it will wait for a bit until the dust settles from its original offering - I suppose the answer will be arriving “soon.”

    Intriguing synth. the "cold" sound should not be a negative. I hear complexity and richness as well. Specs are great, screen is great, sounds pretty interesting, lots of programming options. Years ago I had an Ensoniq Fizmo and this is what I always wanted out of the Fizmo but I let it go in the end....the wavetables were too lean even though it had an interesting design that provide multiple loop points giving the sound motion. This is a worthy descendant of those early digital sounds.... DX, Fizmo, CZ and PPG... pretty steep pricing on these new monsters... PX, Moog One and Quantum but of course I must have them all before the end of time. But not selling the Kronos and Montage just yet.... I will let this one ripen on the shelf for awhile and catch price drop....({-;)

    What do you think about this one? Sounds very cold at times and hollow, and like roland fantasia which I don’t care for but I am sure the granular sample manipulation that you can do here is awesome .....

    • @minista
      @minista  6 років тому

      well it is hard to tell for the moment - but of course it is a great tool to manage it all up in one Keyboardsynthesizer together. This thing offers so much possibilities that it is quite a thing to get your head around it. Sure one can say okay you might want to use Largo the software plug as well as Nave in connection with an Ipad and let it run thru two analog filters while still not at the end of the soundchain an effect unit is needed to be put into and then there is the sampler as well as the granular synthesis and. .... you see where this is leading. It still is of course a hybrid and therefor a quite digital effort sounding machine kind of ... well kind of because it is very very close to a fully 2018 generation workstation and therefor one of its kind. There is nothing compareable on the market right now that can reach out to what the Quantum delivers. Still your feeling is right - I am sometimes inbetween the seats which is basically because of those presets that probably do not touch me.Which doesn`t mean the machine is not capable it actutally needs a creative user in front of it to bring the potential to live. So overall I am quite happy this machine made its way to the market ;)

    • @reaktiv1408
      @reaktiv1408 6 років тому

      @gridsleep yes but for its price on used market it's not proportional in terms of capacities. Blofeld packs a lot of sonic territories, using maths modifiers for instance. Of course a lot less than that big boy! I m pretty sure its price will drop within a year after the launching

    To those saying the quantum sounds cold. Are we listening to the same board 😂lol. It definitely does not sound cold. It sounds better than Kronos, ( though I'm not sure it sounds better than Korg Prologue😉!) but not better than Prophet X in my opinion. You can get some very 80s sounds and soundtracks out of it, the "Running Man" or "Blade Runner" even. I however prefer X thus far having played the X. I know of no stores in which a Quantum exist for demos

    • @andrewgenner2613
      @andrewgenner2613 6 років тому +1

      The question of cold sound is not something we can assess objectively, unless we hear one "in the flesh". Wavetables have often been described as cold, but they don't always sound cold. The actual patches used in this demo might also be on the "cold" side, but that doesn't automatically mean the synth cannot do "warm" with different programming. I haven't heard a Quantum "in the flesh" so i cannot say either way. If we actually hear one and don't like, we have the option not to buy it.
      In the meantime, I appreciate anyone taking the time to post a demo of an interesting new synth so we can get at least some idea of things it CAN do. Thanks for posting.

      These are the presets that come with the synth - they are variable wavetable based but no samples - so one could say these are mainly the wavetable oscillators :)

    I'll be honest, if this is worth 4K than the Andromeda A6 should be selling for 20K

      I have the same question, I have an X and its OK, not sure it offers any more than my other boards (my Nord stage does a similar job with samples, not as well though) or some of the quality VSTs, basic patches are the norm for a DSI synth, a few gems padded with a load of sounds that are not usable, not sure if I will keep it or sell for a Quantum, although I have not played the Quantum so will wait and see if the Quantum ever gets a full release (date goes back week by week here in the Uk) the Quantum appears to have more long term possibilities, one last point with the X, sample packs will be available from August but they wont release any costs, sample packs for the Nord are free..

    • @briannicepianoworship8944
      @briannicepianoworship8944 6 років тому +1

      shergy69
      Concerning the prophet X.. I definitely think it's way more than "OK" lol. I've played it and programmed it. It sounds better than both the kronos and montage, and the nord, though the nord comes close in "some" ways, not in others. To own the X or quantim is not enough. You must become one with these boards. If you like touch screens like the montage and kronos, menu diving, you may prefer the quantum. The prophet x was created with fast interaction in mind, more like an analogue synth were your just turning knobs. It also has a setlist/ playlist function for live performance were you can pre set your sounds. You must learn how to program it, to work with the "edit layer b" function and to work with the "instruments" and "type" category to get the precise sound that you want. Even further one must learn to use or turn off the effects precisely. One must also learn to manipulate cutoff and resonance.

      I have a PX and it’s easily become my “go to” for sampled sounds. The quality of the samples is phenomenal and of course there will be more to come but it’s the way you can manipulate the samples into totally different instruments or assign FM or LFO parameters to them to emulate string or brass articulations. I haven’t played the Quantum but it seems like there are a lot of modes, menus and you almost spend more time programming than playing.
      As far as the differences?
      From the GearSlutz forum:
      On the plus side for the Quantum, it has both the ability to sample audio into memory from 1/4” inputs and the ability to use real-time audio to feed the granular engine. Granular playback could itself be a big deal. It also has the ability to build and alter keymaps using the instrument’s own user interface. It has a few different round-robin strategies, and the ability to layer three samples on a single voice (compared to the Prophet X’s two instruments per voice.) For the next five months or so, the fact that the Quantum can load user samples and the X owners just have to wait patiently is going to be annoying, but it’s eventually a non-issue.
      On the plus side for the Prophet X, you can load up to 6GB of samples for use in a single preset (compared to something in the 400-500MB range for the Quantum, I’m not sure if a final value has been confirmed by owners.) The X can also store 50GB of user samples alongside the 150GB of factory samples (compared to the Quantum having something on the order of 2-3GB of sample storage total, of which 1GB was expected to be pre-loaded from the factory.) Samples play back in true stereo through the X filters, whereas they’re summed to mono on the Quantum unless the filters are bypassed, while deliberately summing them to mono on the X allows double the voice count (the Quantum always sticks with eight voices before layering.) Samples can be both the source and destination for a variety of audio-rate modulation techniques on the X including amplitude modulation and exponential FM (the Quantum doesn’t support audio-rate modulation generally, but it does support ring modulation.)
