You are both right. Good bands have a drummer and a bass player that have good cerebal and emotional intelligence; they need to have both types in order to deal with the guitarists ego, and not compete to fill every gap with virtuoso bullshit. Instead, they make the song their focus.
      FYI
Good/great guitarists are ten a penny but drummers and bassists, are worth their weight in gold.

might as well use a midi player and an digital instrument because the player doesnt matter. pickups dont matter. nothing matters but the speaker in the cabinet, so just use a PA with the FOTM speaker and a modeler. this is the way.

    • @ryanloescher6234
      @ryanloescher6234 Місяць тому

@@billybob-b7t I don't think anyone said nothing else is a factor, just that the speaker is the most important since it's the last step of the set up from turning the potential energy of your rig into the kinetic energy of sound. Once you start adding things like gain, overdrive, etc.- you're really eliminating any difference that could come from "tonewood" or your fingers. For that matter, why wouldn't Slash just play a cheap first act guitar through an old, cheap combo amp if his tone is simply in his fingers? A lot of people seem to confuse style with tone. Those terms aren't interchangeable

    • @ryanloescher6234
      @ryanloescher6234 Місяць тому

@@miguelnewmexico8641 I would say if someone's argument is "you'll never sound like (insert guitarist) because you don't have their fingers" that is inherently wrong when it comes to the electric guitar. I think the statement is simply misapplied most of the time especially in the realm of electric guitarists.

An often overlooked tip for mix translation testing is to always play your reference mix first on each playback device before testing your own mix. This allows you to understand how a well balanced track should sound on each device, providing a baseline for comparison. By doing this, you’ll gain a clearer perspective on how your mix should translate across different listening environments, rather than just trying to match the sound you hear in your mixing room. Cheers from Puerto Rico

I've got one of those 4x10 '80s Marshall cabs and it sounds phenomenal live, but the guy who I had recorded with in the band where I primarily used it was never able to capture the sound well at the source. Not exactly sure why that was but we didn't really have time to troubleshoot it because, you know, studio time isn't free so we just used a different cabinet and I never went back to try to mic it again in a studio setting.

    +1 for the 10" speakers.
They have the punch and the volume and they don't shit all over the place like 12" speakers do (read: they don't occupy the bass guitar's territory). A 4x10 closed back cab is my go-to for rock and metal, 2x10 open back works for everything else.
Mind you, if you can hook up 2 cabs, try 2x10 and 1x15. 10s will breakup earlier that a 15 so you'll get midrange growl and clean-ish low end. Fun thing to do! :) Good luck!

GLENNN!!! Regarding tone, cabs, speakers, IRs for bass and guitar. Can you review Celestion BN12-300S:
Celestion recommend these for BOTH guitar and bass, their support (signed as Dr Decibel) just warn that using them in a semi-open guitar cab will lose some bottom end, though it's totally safe even to play bass through a setup like that.
Some big names in boutique cabs market use them (Zilla, Barefaced, Quilter), and some people use them with a poweramp instead of FRFR for modellers.
I'm thinking to load my H&K 100W 2x12 combo with these for capturing "moving air" with a mic, and blending that with tracks with IRs using Captor X or similar, both bass and guitar.
I wonder how these would work for guitar/bass metal tones for someone who knows what they're doing, and how much using these in different types of cabs (2x12 vs 4x12, open vs closed, etc.) and/or using EQ at the end of the signal chain in effects loop would affect the tone.

Hey Glenn, I'm a big fan of the channel! I was curious. Tone woods and tube amp mythology aside. Have you ever had a tone in your head that you were chasing, and if so, how much obsessing is reasonable before you say close enough or good enough and use what you have?

I dig the photo at the top of your channel page, did you take it?
I’ve been getting into dark sky photography the past couple of years and now I have a couple of used cannons. I’ll have to take your advice and try some band photos.

Hi Glenn, do you think it's worth swapping a speaker on a lower end combo amp? I have an older marshall mg100dfx that has a 1x12 (no branding on speaker) . Also not sure if you have done a video on this but open or closed back on the speaker compartment, does it make a difference when recording? Cheers

Hey Glenn...what do you think about doing a 10" vs 12" guitar speaker shootout? Since guitar is a midrange instrument 10s seem like they would be better for guitar...thoughts?

The best guitar/bass is whatever you like the sound and feel of. If it makes you want to play then it’s good.

My favourite bass at the moment is a modified Squire Sonic Bronco. Even with new hardware it still cost less than a new Squire Classic Vibe 50s P bass. I own 10 basses and this Squire is my favourite sounding, favourite to play, favourite to record and the cheapest.

10” speakers can be great. In my experience the Fender Hot Rod Deville 4x10 sounds better than the 2x12 version. I have a small 2x10 cab fitted with Celestion VT Junior and G10 Greenback. Originally I purchased it for home practice as it was small. I have actually used it in the studio and live because it sounds so good.

Sometimes small speakers just sound right. The Gallien-Krueger 250ML has two 6 1/2” speakers and sounds good enough to be used on recordings by Iron Maiden, Queen , Rush, Gary Moore, Extreme and many more. It was a bit of a studio secret weapon in the 80s.

Hey Glenn, if you can answer this it'd be very much appreciated, sorry if I get verbose or long winded. I was wondering something. I have a lot of unconventional ideas about doing things (I'm open to the results of trying such things resulting in either working or determining an idea is stupid) but the feedback I almost always get is to buy a $2000+ tube amp & that the standard way is the only way worth the effort (despite no evidence that an idea has ever been tried before). I was wondering as someone who regularly tries to convince people to step out of the echo chamber & into areas they find uncomfortable to consider as part of your experience, what's a tactic/trick you use to get them to focus on what you're talking about instead of pushing what they're familiar with? How do you personally steer someone towards the experimental or theoretical instead of getting a sermon on the magic of pickups/tubes?
I am not sure who is more annoying to me or holding back new ideas, a Jehovah's Witness or a Tubevangelist (or pickup-priest or brand-bishop or composition conformist). The nicknames are WIP.

To the mix translation question, I’ve recently been mixing only in headphones (switching between everyday Apple AirPods, and the more expensive Beyerdynamic T5p’s) and my mixes have been translating so much better.

Hey sir, I do have a question. For a normal tube or even solid state amp, what kind of speakers would be great for a little more BASS? I have an EVN 5150 El 34 and I also have a Boss Kitana Artist 100w. I actually like both amps but was thinking of getting a 2X12 cab to use instead of the stock 1 speaker in both amps. I play mostly 80's music cause im old lol.

I understood the bads player, as a bads player myself, I think what he was TRYING to insinuate was that there seems to be a larger range in bass pickups than guitar pickups when swapping out.
Of course, you're not running a bass through a high-gain distortion so yeah, you'll hear more differences, sure.
With my guitars, I experimented a lot with pickups, wasted a lot of money, ended up settling on an SD JB because of channels like this. Should have just gone with the classic that WORKS.
As for bass, I get a lot more pickier... There's a lot of different pickups I love.

in the 70s and early 80s I worked with guitar players who used Fender Super Reverb amps. A 4-10 cabinet. Not exactly a metal thing but i always felt that with the right pedal, these amps would kill. You should check one out if you can find one. A nice small combo amp that at 45 watts doesn't destroy the ears of the rest of the band or the audience.

Is there a reason why you have to choose between 2x12 or 2x10? I tried a 10+12 in a cab, and I'm a little disappointed but I think that's mainly because it's a closed particle board cab that is actually a bit to small to let the speakers do their job. So I'm planning on making my own cab with plywood, make it a bit bigger and try it both closed and open back.

I've been watching for a while now (and have been sub'd).
I'm not in a band, not recording. Nothing like that.
I played in a band (way back in the black and white days of the early 90's), and I stopped because of, well life happens. I played less, then not at all for Years.
I started up again, and have got to the stage where I want to start jamming, maybe play in a local band, just for fun. Playing live if it happens, but no ambitions.
Your reviews, apart from Dam entertaining, are Great food for thought. And you need to think. I know what I want, know what to look for, and how to, drum roll... Know how to achieve that without spending Huge money!
So, thanks, thank you for being for Players, not manufacturers. My wallet and bank balance say thanks too.

  • @crisscrossam

To the guy asking about a mix translating to other systems, i would explain it like this: you know how to know if something is objectively/scientifically true it has to be tried and tested multiple times by multiple people, maybe in multiple ways and get the same repeatable results? Same for mixing. In a time where we have different sound systems everywhere with different qualities, dynamic ranges, sizes, locations etc. one has to test that the song sounds good enough on all of them for it to be a good mix. Many studios have, in addition to high end monitors, lower end or even desktop speakers to compare with in the same room, let alone in different acoustic locations. Headphones are also another important way to test your mix, as well as listening to the mix in mono to watch for any phase issues.

If you had to choose one 6, one 7, and one 8 string guitar for a death core band, what would you choose ??? .... me I think 6= solar, 7=music man john petrucci, and 8=aristidies or stranberg. Thoughts?

I put the guts from a Peavey 158 into a Peavey hypervent bass cabinet, and it sounds better with the bigger speaker. Any idea what's going on ?? Then I tried straight into the PA from my pedal, and jeepers... I want an amp that sounds like that.

I have never experienced a bass tone so bad that I needed to change the pickups. I have experienced that with a guitar though. I bought a guitar that had SD Slash pickups and almost quit playing guitar entirely. After replacing those with a set of DiMarzio's Steve Vai Evolution pickup, those are my go-to replacements for when a guitar sounds absolutely horrible that it faces either replacement pickups or a chainsaw; so far, those Evolutions are in two of my guitars.

hey you probably already did this at some point but it would be cool to see a blind shootout of the best amp modelling and irs in 2024 vs the best amps cabs and mics you have at your disposal, maybe with racks and the neve as an ultimate digital vs analog guitar gear thing.
It would be really cool as guitar software and tech in general is better than ever and you can get insane results with all your analog gear.
