Good advice lol I use a external bass speaker. I had to turn down the "volume" on the thing while watching these instructors. I have reduced 15% hearing loss (due to trauma at 6yrs) so hearing bass is my happy place but, some of these notes fragged it lol

haha, Geoff has an amazing comedic talent. we see it all the time as patrons, where his write ups in his patron posts almost are worth the patron membership all on it's own, and it surfaces in his and VoicePlay's webchats as well. his sense of humor is amazing, and he's mentioned several times that he'd love to write if only he had the time, which sadly he doesn't. but we're lucky to get little bits of comedy gold every month as patrons at least. 😄😄
"There seems to be a market for bass content" a lot of that is because bass content is so rare. Not only do the ladies tend to love it, but most popular songs in the media are sung in the upper ranges. I haven't had much of an upper range since puberty, so seeing and hearing content that helps me understand and improve the areas of my natural range makes me very grateful.
Bass and low/deep voices aren't necessarily rare, but hearing bass being sung is kind of rare since today's music scene is dominated by pop music which prefers high range voices. Females do love a good bass voice though, I will tell you that for sure
@@eka8520 I wasn't implying that bass voices were necessarily rare (though typically the lowest I hear is a high baritone) I was mostly talking about the media available. I especially love 80's metal/rock but almost everything in that era and style is in the extreme upper range while it seems like country tends to like somewhat lower ranges.
I usually listen to a lot of metal, hard rock, industrial and the occasional oldie crooner style that I grew up listening to from my parents, but this fellow’s voice struck me as being SO unique I was immediately addicted to it. Marvellous production and arrangements and after hearing the usual high pitched metal stuff and growling for so many years, to hear this smooth deep tone is refreshing beyond belief. What a master.
4:26 Geoff YOU ACTUALLY DID AN ACCIDENTAL SECOND SUBHARMONIC THERE! Listen closely. When starting the note you had difficulty to hit it and a FIFTH below appeared. That my friend is a second subharmonic. Now you know how to get there and you can start practicing.
My favourite part is how Geoff really says at 5:56 "Most of the stuff that makes me sound superhuman, that's just really good production" while sounding superhuman thoughout most of this video. So either you are superhuman or this video also has super fancy audio production :D But in all seriousness, I guess it's rather many years of very dedicated practice, yes there's also lots of talent, but let's not underappreciate all the practice and devotion that goes into sounding so "superhuman" and actually still be very much human and down to earth or... underground even..in a bass-y way? I think that there was some of the qd-ing that he described, since even his asmr whisper (which theoretically shouldn't be affected by your normal voice range) still sounds bass boosted. I completely agree with you though!

If I can be of assistance at all, wash your hair as infrequently as possible, keep it up when it's dry (so it stays cleaner for longer), and use a silicone-free shampoo and conditioner (not conditioning shampoo 🤮). Everything past that will depend on your hair type.
The second subharmonic drops the first by a fifth. I spent a lot of time trying to get low enough to sing along with your parts, and I was able to through subharmonics. My natural range cuts out around g2-f2, but I can go go down to C1 with the use of the first and second subharmonics. Oogie Boogie song is a good example, because the ending is a perfect “subharmonic scale” (B2-B1-E1). I would be extremely interested to hear a true bass use the second subharmonic. It’s added an octave and a half to my range (although it’s barely usable except to entertain myself and annoy my wife). It would certainly test exactly how low vocal chords can resonate. Side note, the second subharmonic isn’t all that difficult if you can use the first without much effort. I found it easiest to drop to the first, then relax into that same feeling again and play with it until I found the fifth. Just like the first, you’ll know it when you find it. Edit: one thing of note that I feel needs mentioned is this; subharmonics are simply adding vocal fry to a given note, which causes it resonate the octave or fifth below the original note. David Larson pointed out that the subharmonic range is *in theory* “infinite”. This is certainly the case from the viewpoint of musical theory, however in practice we have to consider how much resonance that the vocal folds can support. Based on everything I’ve seen, read, and tried that limit is the second/MAYBE third subharmonic. You also diminish the amount of volume/support each time you add the subharmonic. We’ll say 100% for the original note, 60-80% for the first subharmonic, and 40-60% for the second. By the time you get to the third there’s so little support/volume that it’s barely recognizable as a “note”. The exception to this (again, based on my experience and research) is if you use the subharmonic on notes that are closer to your “happy range”. An example would be (for me) using the first subharmonic from E2-G1, and the second from F1-B0. Since my range cuts out at G2, I switch to the first subharmonic before I have to strain to hit the notes, and again to the second subharmonic once the first runs out. This maintains a fair uniform amount of support/volume as the notes progressively get lower. You’ll notice, however, that I didn’t go any lower than B0 in the second subharmonic. That’s the “how much resonance can the vocal folds support” thing coming into play. For me, I can indeed “go lower” but the support and volume is pretty much nonexistent at that point. That’s why I said it would be interesting to hear this technique used by a true bass because that limit may or may not apply to their vocal folds (basically is it humanly possible to sing into the 0-octave, or is there a universal cut-off for all humans).
I’ve been trying to reach the second subharmonic for a while, my range cuts out at around B1/C2 and I can reach around a D1 in first subharmonic, do you have any suggestions?

i would assume for this its also an arrangement thing. it would make sense, to me, to just have geoff do the bass wherever possible and then choose who does what when they go to perform it live. but hey, if they actually have internal discussions on stuff like that, i would be interested to know as well.

@@jack2626 I am not the best at explaining, Geoff definitely has more experience and can explain better than me but I'll try it. I don't really know if my voice got deeper because of practicing fry but it definitely helps to connect your lowest notes. Everyone has their own voice and some can go lower than the others. Singing in general helps too and an instrument is your best friend in this process. But try to go as low as you can when you are practicing with fry, especially in the mornings. I hope I could help! 😊

I'm in the Men's Chorus at BYU, and we're so lucky, because we get to practice and perform as a group even now. Honestly, I can't imagine not singing in a choir right now, because that's basically been the only thing that's kept me going. Anyways, I love these videos!

I've got a 2nd tenor/baritone voice (my lowest note is normally the F at the bottom of the bass clef), but I just love low voices. I'm actually totally excited right now, because I was just laying in bed and singing to myself and it just clicked and I somehow sang a subharmonic. I jumped up, ran to the practice room, and just practice rammed it into my head for an hour. Like I said, I've been trying for years, so I'm feeling pretty good right now. I guess just, if you want to, you can, eventually.

Real Talk about the ASMR Channel idea though…I know to some people it’s weird, but ASMR has helped me with a lot of my anxiety…but also “ear therapy” as I like to call it. I’m surrounded by loud noises and like most if not all of us, constant auditory stimulation…my ears always feel tired. I listen to ASMR videos, even some ofnthe soft spoken, whispery ones, rubbing the mic with say, cotton swabs or the weirdest-- mouth sounds (which I cannot stand in real life), because it’s therapeutic, genuinely relaxing and puts me to sleep almost instantly. Instant SUB if you’re ever going to make one, Geoff. Hahaha!! (I’d be more interested if your wife, Kathy also did her own ASMR content…).
It's all about putting pressure on your throat, like ur trying to block the air. The more u practice the better you'll be at it. It sounds super cool bcus you can sound like an octavist

Like many, I have been trying to extend my vocal range higher to "blend in" with most music performed and produced today. After watching these videos and some practice (and singing along to them), my chest voice is to a B1. Now to work on that Subharmonic Technique. And by the way "young man", I'm 59. So yeah, the voice is STILL dropping! Keep up with the great videos and content! Outstanding doesn't begin to describe your talent.

Yo his hair is the key to his low voice so he can’t tell us lol. Also I’ve been practicing singing lower notes, but I wanted to know how to singing higher like mixed notes.
@@luiberleme6693 mixing is high up beyond the chest range but right before falsetto so its not pure falsetto.. you can reach it in two ways but the easiest is by singing a high note in falsetto (lets say an F#4 since you're just starting) and then you slowely start adding more heaviness from your chest... its like whining or little crying affect added to the voice (use a and e vowels for an easier sound),that'll make the note more resonant and round.. make sure you're relaxing the soft pallet and not trying to push to keep the note... the more you do it the more comfortable it will get and the better it will sound
another technique is mask placed falsetto (or head voice) is when you sing a note in falsetto and move it up through the nasal cavity.. it makes a really forward placed sharp but full sound.. a great example is in staying alive by the bee gees try singing with them and mimicking their sound

I thought it was just me pushing down further than I could go... when the clean tone becomes that froggy croak. I found your cover of Sixteen Tons last week and you have inspired me to work on my voice brother! I've never had voice lessons or been in anything other than elementary school choir, but I've always thought I could sing fairly well. I'm using your videos as a beginning guide and hope to one day make a cover of your cover, even if for my ears only.
It's always been obvious to me that some of the "super-human" stuff was done/adjusted in post, like that bass riff. But it's never taken away from how amazing it is. You still have to be pretty darn great to begin with to be able to pull of that kind of stuff in post. I don't sing, and even if I did I'm not going to be anywhere remotely close to a bass range (being female doesn't help) but I like learning new things so thank you for making these videos.
I've learned so much from you and just listening to your songs. For instance on your cover of "Sixteen Tons" I tried singing it at the same notes and using the same technique and I almost got it right. Btw I'm 16 and you are one of my biggest inspirations

The lowest i can get with my chest voice (at 17yo) is a D#2. Late to the party but...I keep my subwoofer on my desk behind my monitors. Never had any issues until THIS video, which caused everything on my desk to rattle around every time Geoff hit a low note. It wasn't even turned up halfway!
The concern with age could actually be really related to how deep your voice is. Humans seem to connect low voices with higher age subconsciously. When I just had turned 20, that was close to 7 years ago I once asked a girl how old she would think that I am, without seeing my face. She thought I was "46 or something". I have a rather deep and somewhat rough voice when I'm not speaking from my throat. I just took it as a compliment of how deep my voice is, even though it obviously wasn't attractive to her.
Just found your channel via the Far Over the Misty Mountains. I basically never subscribe after just one video, but with this one, I'm at two and you still have my interest, so the red button has been used.
The way you do the 2nd sub is actually really simple, but how to get it *consistent* takes a month or so with practice. Here is how I learned it: 1. Start on a note where you don’t shorten your vocal chords at all; what I mean by that Is a medium-lower note that you could hold over an orchestra, (For you Geoff I think that would be sth between a G#2-A#2) 2. Then with strong twang go into the first sub, then maintain that twang (and I can’t stress twang enough) while you sing the first sub and add a *tiny* amount of fry. At first you will find your voice to slip into a billion different positions (imagine a dying bull that just reached his voice change) however with practice you will learn to add just the amount of fry so that your voice slip into just the perfect position producing a note a perfect fifth below the 1st sub. Once you have the muscle memory hammered in and you now how this “position shift” feels like, then you just need to practice in order to make the 2nd subs consistent. As a few final tips: firstly anyone attempting this MUST be able to instantly activate the first sub without any difficulty, and secondly you shouldn’t sing too loudly or to quietly (there is a very fine line here that you must be aware of) That’s it basically, and if anyone’s interested I can upload a clip of myself singing a 2nd sub, however my mom isn’t really a fan of me practicing this, so I would have to find a time when I am home alone :P
First, I want to say, watching this video produced a major breakthrough in my singing, so Thank You Geoff!! There was a market for lower notes, and I found out about it a decade ago. I took a beginning Piano class and recognized a Howard Shore song from a few phrases in the bass area. I sang these bass notes with a smooth buzz like Ozzie Nelson's lower notes and instantly people wanted me to sing for them. I didn't take them up on this because I had trouble transitioning from low to high notes; however, after watching this video, I found I can smoothly transition from low to high.
Wait, if you've skipped into the fourth subharmonic then what's your fundamental? its gotta be in the 3rd octave if you've managed to slip into the fourth
@@bengerberich2982 Oh yeah, it was probably F or G3 for that. 3rd subharmonic, the lowest I've gotten is probably B0, though the app on my phone that I use only goes to C1 so I can't say for sure. 2nd I can go down to C#-D1, G#-A1 with first. My lowest chest note at present is C#2. Not sure why it's so difficult for me to go lower than A1 first subharmonic...

I can't unpredictably sing second subharmonics, and they seem to more easily occur in the higher range of my subharmonics. Geoff, this video is fantastic. And as always, the information and entertainment value of these Q and As is just on point. One could listen for hours without getting bored, cause it just has the right amount and mix of humor, nerdiness and useful / useless but interesting facts in it!

If I can be of assistance at all, wash your hair as infrequently as possible, keep it up when it's dry (so it stays cleaner for longer), and use a silicone-free shampoo and conditioner (not conditioning shampoo 🤮). Everything past that will depend on your hair type.

That "Asleep in the Deep" A1 was amazing.
The second subharmonic drops the first by a fifth. I spent a lot of time trying to get low enough to sing along with your parts, and I was able to through subharmonics. My natural range cuts out around g2-f2, but I can go go down to C1 with the use of the first and second subharmonics. Oogie Boogie song is a good example, because the ending is a perfect “subharmonic scale” (B2-B1-E1). I would be extremely interested to hear a true bass use the second subharmonic. It’s added an octave and a half to my range (although it’s barely usable except to entertain myself and annoy my wife). It would certainly test exactly how low vocal chords can resonate. Side note, the second subharmonic isn’t all that difficult if you can use the first without much effort. I found it easiest to drop to the first, then relax into that same feeling again and play with it until I found the fifth. Just like the first, you’ll know it when you find it.
Edit: one thing of note that I feel needs mentioned is this; subharmonics are simply adding vocal fry to a given note, which causes it resonate the octave or fifth below the original note. David Larson pointed out that the subharmonic range is *in theory* “infinite”. This is certainly the case from the viewpoint of musical theory, however in practice we have to consider how much resonance that the vocal folds can support. Based on everything I’ve seen, read, and tried that limit is the second/MAYBE third subharmonic. You also diminish the amount of volume/support each time you add the subharmonic. We’ll say 100% for the original note, 60-80% for the first subharmonic, and 40-60% for the second. By the time you get to the third there’s so little support/volume that it’s barely recognizable as a “note”. The exception to this (again, based on my experience and research) is if you use the subharmonic on notes that are closer to your “happy range”. An example would be (for me) using the first subharmonic from E2-G1, and the second from F1-B0. Since my range cuts out at G2, I switch to the first subharmonic before I have to strain to hit the notes, and again to the second subharmonic once the first runs out. This maintains a fair uniform amount of support/volume as the notes progressively get lower. You’ll notice, however, that I didn’t go any lower than B0 in the second subharmonic. That’s the “how much resonance can the vocal folds support” thing coming into play. For me, I can indeed “go lower” but the support and volume is pretty much nonexistent at that point. That’s why I said it would be interesting to hear this technique used by a true bass because that limit may or may not apply to their vocal folds (basically is it humanly possible to sing into the 0-octave, or is there a universal cut-off for all humans).

@@jack2626 I am not the best at explaining, Geoff definitely has more experience and can explain better than me but I'll try it. I don't really know if my voice got deeper because of practicing fry but it definitely helps to connect your lowest notes. Everyone has their own voice and some can go lower than the others. Singing in general helps too and an instrument is your best friend in this process. But try to go as low as you can when you are practicing with fry, especially in the mornings. I hope I could help! 😊

I'm in the Men's Chorus at BYU, and we're so lucky, because we get to practice and perform as a group even now. Honestly, I can't imagine not singing in a choir right now, because that's basically been the only thing that's kept me going. Anyways, I love these videos!

I've got a 2nd tenor/baritone voice (my lowest note is normally the F at the bottom of the bass clef), but I just love low voices. I'm actually totally excited right now, because I was just laying in bed and singing to myself and it just clicked and I somehow sang a subharmonic. I jumped up, ran to the practice room, and just practice rammed it into my head for an hour. Like I said, I've been trying for years, so I'm feeling pretty good right now. I guess just, if you want to, you can, eventually.

Real Talk about the ASMR Channel idea though…I know to some people it’s weird, but ASMR has helped me with a lot of my anxiety…but also “ear therapy” as I like to call it. I’m surrounded by loud noises and like most if not all of us, constant auditory stimulation…my ears always feel tired. I listen to ASMR videos, even some ofnthe soft spoken, whispery ones, rubbing the mic with say, cotton swabs or the weirdest-- mouth sounds (which I cannot stand in real life), because it’s therapeutic, genuinely relaxing and puts me to sleep almost instantly.
Instant SUB if you’re ever going to make one, Geoff. Hahaha!! (I’d be more interested if your wife, Kathy also did her own ASMR content…).
As a bass singer myself, I don't do inwards singing for one reason alone - I sound like a dying cow... ;)

Just make sure you DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING in your throat (not even mucus) or YOU WILL CHOKE.
It's all about putting pressure on your throat, like ur trying to block the air. The more u practice the better you'll be at it. It sounds super cool bcus you can sound like an octavist
another tip: sing the higher "bass" notes inwards and eventually work lower and lower to the "growly" notes. Allows a lot more control and depth!
Usually takes about a month for an experienced singer to start to hit notes with ingressive phonation, but about an year to master it
Geoff, thank you so much for all these videos you create! I have found not only quality content for improving my vocal range, but inspiration to embrace singing bass again. Like many, I have been trying to extend my vocal range higher to "blend in" with most music performed and produced today. After watching these videos and some practice (and singing along to them), my chest voice is to a B1. Now to work on that Subharmonic Technique. And by the way "young man", I'm 59. So yeah, the voice is STILL dropping!

I think it's just subharmonics, but you do them higher. Don't know about overtones though

@@luiberleme6693 mixing is high up beyond the chest range but right before falsetto so its not pure falsetto.. you can reach it in two ways but the easiest is by singing a high note in falsetto (lets say an F#4 since you're just starting) and then you slowely start adding more heaviness from your chest... its like whining or little crying affect added to the voice (use a and e vowels for an easier sound),that'll make the note more resonant and round.. make sure you're relaxing the soft pallet and not trying to push to keep the note... the more you do it the more comfortable it will get and the better it will sound
another technique is mask placed falsetto (or head voice) is when you sing a note in falsetto and move it up through the nasal cavity.. it makes a really forward placed sharp but full sound.. a great example is in staying alive by the bee gees try singing with them and mimicking their sound
Mr Castellucci DEFINITELY inspired me to do more with my own (naturally) bass singing voice. the subharmonic thing I didn't even know was actually a Thing. I thought it was just me pushing down further than I could go... when the clean tone becomes that froggy croak. Am SO glad it is actually a singing trick & not just me being crap at trying to find my profundity lol

It's always been obvious to me that some of the "super-human" stuff was done/adjusted in post, like that bass riff. But it's never taken away from how amazing it is. You still have to be pretty darn great to begin with to be able to pull of that kind of stuff in post.
I don't sing, and even if I did I'm not going to be anywhere remotely close to a bass range (being female doesn't help) but I like learning new things so thank you for making these videos.

The lowest i can get with my chest voice (at 17yo) is a D#2. I am always very close to giving up because i cant seem to go lower until i remember that im just 17 so thank you for giving me confidence in my future singing. Love your work. The more you sing the better you get I found your videos 2 years ago and have practiced singing the deeper notes and have noticed my voice getting deeper slowly

Late to the party but...I keep my subwoofer on my desk behind my monitors. Never had any issues until THIS video, which caused everything on my desk to rattle around every time Geoff hit a low note. It wasn't even turned up halfway!
The concern with age could actually be really related to how deep your voice is. Humans seem to connect low voices with higher age subconsciously. When I just had turned 20, that was close to 7 years ago I once asked a girl how old she would think that I am, without seeing my face. She thought I was "46 or something". I have a rather deep and somewhat rough voice when I'm not speaking from my throat. I just took it as a compliment of how deep my voice is, even though it obviously wasn't attractive to her.
Just found your channel via the Far Over the Misty Mountains. I basically never subscribe after just one video, but with this one, I'm at two and you still have my interest, so the red button has been used.
The way you do the 2nd sub is actually really simple, but how to get it *consistent* takes a month or so with practice. Here is how I learned it:
1. Start on a note where you don’t shorten your vocal chords at all; what I mean by that Is a medium-lower note that you could hold over an orchestra, (For you Geoff I think that would be sth between a G#2-A#2)
2. Then with strong twang go into the first sub, then maintain that twang (and I can’t stress twang enough) while you sing the first sub and add a *tiny* amount of fry. At first you will find your voice to slip into a billion different positions (imagine a dying bull that just reached his voice change) however with practice you will learn to add just the amount of fry so that your voice slip into just the perfect position producing a note a perfect fifth below the 1st sub.
Once you have the muscle memory hammered in and you now how this “position shift” feels like, then you just need to practice in order to make the 2nd subs consistent.
As a few final tips: firstly anyone attempting this MUST be able to instantly activate the first sub without any difficulty, and secondly you shouldn’t sing too loudly or to quietly (there is a very fine line here that you must be aware of)
That’s it basically, and if anyone’s interested I can upload a clip of myself singing a 2nd sub, however my mom isn’t really a fan of me practicing this, so I would have to find a time when I am home alone :P

First, I want to say, watching this video produced a major breakthrough in my singing, so Thank You Geoff!! There was a market for lower notes, and I found out about it a decade ago. I took a beginning Piano class and recognized a Howard Shore song from a few phrases in the bass area. I sang these bass notes with a smooth buzz like Ozzie Nelson's lower notes and instantly people wanted me to sing for them. I didn't take them up on this because I had trouble transitioning from low to high notes; however, after watching this video, I found I can smoothly transition from low to high.

@@bengerberich2982 Oh yeah, it was probably F or G3 for that. 3rd subharmonic, the lowest I've gotten is probably B0, though the app on my phone that I use only goes to C1 so I can't say for sure. 2nd I can go down to C#-D1, G#-A1 with first. My lowest chest note at present is C#2. Not sure why it's so difficult for me to go lower than A1 first subharmonic...

I can't unpredictably sing second subharmonics, and they seem to more easily occur in the higher range of my subharmonics. Geoff, this video is fantastic. Your subtle humour is great and your instruction is always clear and incredibly helpful. I really appreciate the effort you put into your own videos.
