LMAO. Exactly. And Eric H. - Props to you, my man. I will be subscribing. And honestly, I don't even know if I've ever subscribed to a channel before (if I did, it was a long, long time ago.). Peace...
Dreams do come true! Tortoise exists, and one of your favorite guitar guys on youtube does a lesson of one of my favorite Tortoise songs. This song is a highlight for me seeing them live. Good memories, Fantastic choice!
Another brilliant and left field choice for a lesson. It’s great the way you shine a light on really interesting musicians and unique voiced players. Helping keeping my ropey playing interesting one guitar hero at a time!
Thanks man! I love the way these Chicago artists combine jazz chords and feel into the sonic palette - makes me think I gotta do more investigation into this area :-)
Cool! I've never been but I really want to visit that whole area! My grandfather was from Norway (hence the surname), and I've still got cousins over there.
Your channel is becoming one of my favorite and I currently subscribe to 324 haha. Love the deconstructing and perspectives you include. Always demystifies everything for us. Great job!
Dude thanks so much! I'm so happy to be here, helping to explain things that should be simple, but are made over-complicated by music theory jargon. At the end of that day, it's all just pretty notes :-)
Great band name, btw! I often use the heartbeat to talk to my students about time, feel, and swing. And yeah, this is the beginning of an journey into Chicago post-rock jazz stuff :-)
@@EricHaugenGuitar that would be amazing :) I dont know of any other songs like these... of course there is precident in jazz and rock but nothing quite so uniquely intricate/organized while still remaining understated and full of feeling, Mr. Parker is easily one of my all time fav guitarists and influences... thanks for these!!
Wow! I just "discovered" Jeff Parker (late to the party as usual), and here you have a lesson! Rather than finding things slowly on my own (e.g., Ribot), maybe I should just comb through your lessons and listen to every player you feature in your lessons!
Thanks Jay! I've seen Tortoise a handful of times over the years, and they've always been great. They have the best live sound of any band I've ever heard - so hifi and natural.
No problem dude. I saw Tortoise for the first time a few years ago and ended up bringing a couple of friends (my buddy and his GF) to the show and they weren't huge fans of it, unfortunately. They appreciated their musical abilities, but mostly they both responded - of course YOU love this band as you're a drummer! The gf made mention of the fact that she liked people watching during their set as it was painfully obvious that a bunch of people there were drummers also as they were either air-drumming or bobbing their heads in time with the beat. Oh well, you can't convert everyone into fans.
Beautiful, Eric. I wasn't familiar with this tune. Gorgeous tone, too. With a Silvertone amp, no less! My first electric guitar and amp were Silvertones. I practically gave them away. Now they are probably worth a fortune.
Thanks David! Tortoise and that whole scene of post-rock groove bands is cool stuff - jazz for people who aren’t total jazz heads :-) These old silvertones have gone up in price, but you can still get them for $600-$1000. Mine actually belongs to a friend of my in LA, the poet/writer Tony Tost, who did a bunch of Longmire episodes and created the “Damnation” show. Interesting guy.
Nice! Do you listen to Jim O'rourke, gastr del sol, or The sea and cake? They are some of my favorite Chicago musicians/bands along side Jeff parker and tortoise.
I've got big gaps in my Chicago/Post-Rock catalog. Aside from a few Tortoise records, and a Sam Prekop album, I'm lacking. I'm all ears to some good recommendations!
Eric Haugen Gastr del Sol's catalogue is pretty much all great, there's some very intricate guitarplaying involved, listen to "Dictionary of Handwriting" for example. Lovely lesson, would you consider doing "Glass Museum" sometime in the future?
Always do you... and I love the playing here a lot. But I gotta mention it one more time... I'd love to see how you approach jazz & swing playing! It kinda seem like it's not your taste of style but... ya know... stepping in the challange or unfamiliar lane can open up more technique and could help broaden your musical toolbox for you students! Idk you though. I'd rather you enjoy your days how you prefer livin' them. (Edit) - like Wes Montgomery or Gypsy Jazz Swing stuff. I know musical styles all kinda blend together at the edges, but yeah... I'm talking about the thick-jazz-mustache-of-a-style. Not just "jazziness", but the whole thaang! Peace man!
Oh yeah! Freddie Green, Django, and Wes are some of my favorite players! The main reason I haven’t done a straight ahead swing thing is that there’s teachers on YT who are doing a great job with that material already, but it’s true, my take would be a little different. A little more primal and simple. This post-rock stuff is great to play cause you get the jazz chords and structures, but in a more 90s way :-)
Tortoise lessons! I never though I'd see the day. Beautiful stuff, Mr. Haugen.
Thanks! I’m gonna do some more of these jazz/post-rock lessons - it’s cool stuff!
You know a channel is legit when there's a Jeff Parker lesson on it!
Well taught as usual Eric!
Thanks Marcus!
I'm just dipping my toe into a deep lagoon of his coolness here - there' so much more to investigate!
LMAO. Exactly. And Eric H. - Props to you, my man. I will be subscribing. And honestly, I don't even know if I've ever subscribed to a channel before (if I did, it was a long, long time ago.). Peace...
Jeff Parker = genius. TNT = one of the best instrumental albums ever. You = much appreciated!!!

Man, now Tortoise? I swear, you and I must have the exact same record collection.
Great minds think alike!
I adore this song, it's such an obscure song to cover let alone teach to play. Thank you!
It's my pleasure, Kevin!
I've always really liked the whole Chicago post-rock scene - gotta do some more lessons on those sounds!
Another brilliant and left field choice for a lesson. It’s great the way you shine a light on really interesting musicians and unique voiced players. Helping keeping my ropey playing interesting one guitar hero at a time!
Thanks man! I know I jump around a lot with my eclectic choices - I’m always glad to hear it’s appreciated!!
Can't wait to try this one out. Really appreciate your teaching style and having a Tortoise tutorial is a + TOO!
It’s my pleasure, opossum! I gotta do more of this Chicago post-rock stuff - it’s a great way to work on jazz chords!
Ahhh I love the band Tortoise. A very pleasant surprise, thank you.
Thanks Sebastian!
Loved this tune since forever. For a while it was my 'twang tester' tune.
Tortoise! fantastic choice! Ty ty ty for the lesson!
It's my pleasure, man!
I gotta do some more of this vibey post-rock stuff :-)
Great choice of song, this kind of music doesn't get enough exposure among guitar fans. Love your teaching style too.
Thanks man!
I love the way these Chicago artists combine jazz chords and feel into the sonic palette - makes me think I gotta do more investigation into this area :-)
This song always make me think of my home country Sweden
Cool! I've never been but I really want to visit that whole area!

Great lesson. Nice piece. Thank you!
Thanks Robert!
Nice playing with The Devillaires btw - cool band!
nice tone!!!I think I’m fall in love with it
Yay! Thanks so much!
Great lesson. Just bought the tab as well- thanks Eric!
Yay! Thanks for your support!
Wow, great video. I got the tabs too. Thanks for this. It's such a great song by an amazing band.
Thanks for your support, Jeff!
I gotta do some more explorations in the chicago post rock area - it's such a unique thing!
Superb !
Great lesson. Tortoise rules.
They sure do! Every time I see them play I’m always blown away by how good they sound in person!

Wow, so nice !!! it's so sweet and pleasant to listen to
TheLuluberlu78 Excellent! More Tortoise please :)
Thanks man!
That song is great combination of so many things - jazz, latin feel, reverb, twang!
Great band name, btw!
I often use the heartbeat to talk to my students about time, feel, and swing.
And yeah, this is the beginning of an journey into Chicago post-rock jazz stuff :-)
Eric Haugen Thank you :) and delighted to hear you're going on a post rock journey! Looking forward to it.
Beautiful tone there Eric!
Thanks Mark! That tele really works well with the silvertone!
Oh man I've literally been looking for this (and la jetee) for some time! Thank you!
Ooooh good idea! I should do that one too!

I am by no means an arbiter of cool - I just like what I like, ya know :-)
Another tasty one. A real pleasure to be a follower Eric.
Thanks very much!
Much respect, my twang brother!
Fantastic
Thanks my guitar brother!
Legend! That's my evening sorted anyway.
Cool! This is a fun one to work on 🤙🏼
I think it was the track that got me into Tortoise day one so really stoked :)
Shit man. I love tortoise so much and this song is so great. I got to see them in a small bar in indianapolis several years ago. Fantastic video!
Thanks Jay!
I've seen Tortoise a handful of times over the years, and they've always been great. They have the best live sound of any band I've ever heard - so hifi and natural.
Love it!

thank you!

I gotta do some more Tortoise/Jeff Parker - there's so many cool tunes to take apart and put back together!
Bravo, amigo!!!
Thanks Patrick!
I LOVE Tortoise - such a cool band, with just the perfect sound!

I get it - they're not the most energetic live act. but THE SOUND! THE RHYTHMS!
so good.

More 90’s post rock!
Yeah! Now that I’ve started I realize there’s so much more to investigate!
More Tortoise The Suspension Bridge at Iguazu Falls please
