"god forbid nothing happens" - thanks as always for what you do
LOVE how Mr. Gilmour uses space within his beautiful phrasing.
Dave's solo on Time is his masterpiece of less-is-more phrasing and compound string bends. His finest moment.
hello eric
I don't usually comment on videos but a great example of what you were mentioning and explaining happens on Atom Heart Mother Suite. After the first part of the song (where all the noises from bikes appear and the main motif of the song plays twice, at around 2:50), the progression changes and starts quietly with arpeggios and a beautiful violin (1 time). The arpeggios get faster (2 time), then the slide guitar solo enters (3 time, which targets only chord tones practically), then the solo goes at the same progression (4 and 5 times). It's a great example to study as it shows how different the approach to the same chord progression can be.
Your nugget to time ratio is consistently high. Sustainable nuggets that find their way into my playing. Thank you.
2:20 that sample note was absolutely beautiful. The way it blossomed with an evolving harmonic voice was just amazing!❤
As a muso, there's many, many things I love about Eric's content. As a guitarist that doesn't play live these days, what I love most is how he plays standing up in his house, imitating the experience of playing live with his amps - this is what it's all about, folks.
Eric is quite simply the best guitar teacher in the history of civilization. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I like that you emphasize melodic playing, I strive to do that as I can’t “shred” I wish I could do I could show that I choose not to, if that makes sense. Love you vids.
Eric, you have no idea how much I love your channel and videos, among all the plethora of other (also amazing) video makers out there. You just know how to make it simple. Keep em coming!
I saw David Gilmour in concert last night. Another lesson from watching him is how relaxed and patiently he plays. Nothing is rushed.
Once again, your video aligns with stuff that's very much on my mind at the time. I've started playing in an instrumental rock band as the lead-ish guitarist and am trying to get better with phrasing and hooks since I'm kind of the singer now (without actually singing). Great tips - thanks!
I may name my next demo "Dude, Where's my Chord?"
"Dude where is my chord" is definitely a phrase that will steal, thanks Eric!
Love that you're doing this today, Eric. Just saw Gilmour at the Hollywood Bowl last week. Fantastic. And he fixed his broken Hendrix strap. 😀
Thanks for this video Eric. I always appreciate when someone like yourself talks about and highlights David Gilmour's style.
Giddyup. Love Gilmours playing so much. Always leaves room to breathe. A lot of shredding is just self-gratification and gets quite tedious.
Thanks for doing this video, Eric. Animals is such a great album, Dogs is a masterpiece
I agree, I am a new casual viewer and as soon as he started playing I was like “oh s*** he’s playing Dogs!” And subscribed haha.
When I play slower, repeating melodies, I *feel* like my playing is uninspiring - even if it sounds pleasant.
When I play more aggressive, busier melodies, it's more exciting to me as the player, but almost never sounds as good.
Such is life. 🤷♂️
For a long time I think I must've felt like every lick I played had to be impressive. Looking back, a lot of it was just frantic auditory scribbling. Now that I'm better than I was I have the confidence to let a note sit for a while.
It helps to have a basic understanding of the chord tones of each chord you're playing over, so you know in advance which notes are going to be good to land on. Gilmour's big dramatic bends that he lets ring for a while are often hitting the 3rd or the 5th of the chord that the band is playing at the moment.
Haugen, you stallion. Knowledge nuggets.
Gilmour one of my favorite, thank you Eric
Nice work again Eric. Very useful.
Love this. Thank you! 🙏
you're great cuz. I appreciate you
Nice intro to melodies. Music Radar has an interesting article too called "It's what the overwhelming majority of us listen to first and foremost": How to become a master of melodies".
Did you say "guitarmonies" at 3:29? Love it! 👍
One of the guitarists that made me want to play
love da content
Excellent !!! Thanks again 🙏
Fun fact: I got my Augustas pedal after hearing Eric play through one. The bloom effect from the germanium diode is so sick.
You are God sent sir. 🙏
Great examples for this lesson! David Gilmour is such a melodic player and his parts seems attainable. I saw Sultans of Swing on the list at the beginning, and while I love that song I don't know that it's one I would be able to ever learn note for note.
Love youre Style! ❤❤❤
Thank you
Maestro Eric, this video was very informative. I started playing guitar at 45 inspired by Gilmour, and I'm very interested in melodic solos. Thank you for this video!!!
🥰 Great vid... thank you.
Superb content, Maestro!!
Greetings from México 🤘🔥
Great vid. The plumber tape is a great tip 👍
just be aware it breaks your ground there, not a big deal. Back in the day doing terrible Adrian Belew impersonations wore out my trem arm a little, I used the tape at first but removed it and wound/stuffed a pickup spring down the hole.
Rhythm playing, the bane of my existence. I tend to enjoy complex/exotic chord shapes but my small hands makes them hard to get down cleanly 😅
If you're missing a tremolo arm spring, you can buy one or add qtip cotton in the hole. That keeps the whammy bar in place.
Thanks for the PTFE tip - never thought of that - and as luck would have it I've just returned from the DIY store with some (for plumbing reasons)!
Always so many clear ways of tapping right into the material and mindset reinforcers. So helpful, thank you
The last truly great Pink Floyd album (imho), might give it a spin now, cheers for the inspiration. Yeah phrasing is what connects you to music and helps you find your own voice
Thanks, Eric
DUDE, NICE PERSONALITY!! HUGS
I’m older than most of you. I’m from the slim section generation of teens that lay down and listened to Pink Floyd through headphones. All the cool kids did it, so I knew those notes before you played them .😀
Gilmore's work on animals is some of the tastiest and most economical guitar playing in the history of rock and roll imo
Janglebox! Yay!
Possible related topic: strategies for developing the ability to play the vocal melody without rehearsing it but knowing the key and quickly finding the line and following it
Oooh that's a tricky one!
I talk about it here: ua-cam.com/video/SoK0Bs5ErHY/v-deo.html
Pink Floyd is one of my all times
Crucial thanks Eric
You da man 🤙
Awesome video Eric have a great weekend also I have a fungal infection in my head ❤😢
That Pixies lead! ❤
nice thank you
I know what you’re saying about having a different idea when yo change where you play the riff. When I switch from acoustic to electric and play my same songs I play them differently.
Remembering to breathe , thanks ❤
Very cool!
Welcome back Lohn Jennon
Plumbers tape! Brilliant
Fuck yah, just the slightest squeal coming off of that octave fuzz and squeezed out with hands and vibrato arm. Soooooo, pure...
Plumber’s tape😂 Me too!
Nice Strat :)
just 'bout tonight i'll play at the street that so confused i am rn. Boom, i saw this. Thank you very much.
George Harrison, David Gilmour, BB King, Carlos Santana are the guys i look to for melodic inspiration
Remember PBR and PS&L - thanks Eric !
When will he do a video while being high...I mean...next level stuff😮 its all about progress right...😮
Make sure you have a chill bassist for this stuff. If you hear "Jaco Pastorius solo" while in discussion about arrangement, oh noes!
Dogs is my favorite song of all tine
That first Gilmour solo…All I heard was Biz Markie…
”You say he’s just a friend.” 😂
Hi Eric, I know you’re not using it in this video but could you tell me something about your telecaster? It looks and sounds so amazing and full! I’ve got one myself but it’s suuuper noisy and I’m wondering how to fix that. Cheers
Hrmmmm they shouldn't be very noisy - yours may have a grounding issue. Might be a good idea to take it to the guitar doctor for a check up!
Gilmour is a genius bro
God already did forbid for nothing to happen. It’s built in. Thanks God.
Imho the best way to learn is to not think. Literally sit there, play a few chord progressions and see where it leads you
Dogs as a country song? Nice. It works.
How ironic. I’m sitting here watching a David Gilmore interview when this comes across my screen.
GILMOUR!!
They're watching you 👀
@@MrFrampo56Dam, you beat to it, hard job being a pedant but somebody’s got to do it !
Algorithm
The algorithm doesnt know irony
I've never liked the idea of paying attention to the chords tbh.. but alright, I'll do it.
Can you use duct tape instead of plumbers tape for the whammy bar? I'm a bit worried about it getting stuck in there 🤣
You love Tom Petty? I love Tom Petty….he told me I was the only one 😭 I knew he was cheating on me! Mufukka…😠😖🫣
