They made him look as close s he was physically capable of looking like Ike but being a twin isn't the most important thing I agree with you on that. It's better to capture the essence of Ike and not look for a twin of him.

Ike' s greatest achievement came a few months after D Day, when he managed, against all odds, to keep the Anglo American military alliance together long enough to win the war in Europe. His battles were as much against the egos of his American and British Generals, a hostile press and political elite on both sides of the Atlantic ,as the Wehrmacht and in winning all those individual conflicts, he proved himself not so much a pre eminent military leader, which he was most certainly not, but the most consummate military politician of all time. We will never see his like again

  • @jamescstanley5018

A good insight into the background to D Day. I am 68 and am honoured to have met some of the "Few," and my share of survivors of WW2 , but to a man, they do not accept that they are "The Greatest Generation". At the time they were young men, faced with a very real risk to their homeland, indeed to many were fighting to return home. I (and they ) firmly believe that, given the same circumstances the current, or indeed any generation would fight like hell for what is right and good in the world. We , the British, saw this in 1982, when led by a formidable Prime Minister, fought the aggression and invasion of an independent democratic state was invaded by a dictator. I lost 3 friends in the Falklands, they went willingly, knowing the risks and prepared for whatever the personal result. Throughout history, men have always fought for their homeland, be they volunteers or part of a conscript force, given the right reason, any man, or woman will fight for their freedom and the freedom of those unable to fight themselves. What is so sad is that is that "The Great Generation" had to fight at all! It is up to all mankind to learn the lessons of history, and make sure that the past is never repeated.

Beautifully stated, sir! One of the most appealing aspects of the WWII veterans I've been fortunate enough to meet is their genuine humility, which literally blows me away. While I agree that generations past theirs would've stood up as they did to rid the world of tyranny, there's no doubt in my mind that those who fought in and won WWII and then came home to build our highway system, much of suburbia and achieve greatness in many other areas are truly "The Greatest Generation."

Ike said after D-Day, "There were a thousand Officers giving orders for this Operation and a Million men carrying out my orders. You do the math!" My Uncle who fought in the War told me that Ike was considered an Enlisted Man's General. He didn't care too much for Officers and knew that it was the Enlisted Man who made the difference!

My first time to see .this movie. In 2004 I visited the beaches of D Day, saw where my uncle went ashore that morning and survived, the only thing he ever would say about that morning was that as he went over the side of the ship and into a landing craft he made a vow to GOD that if he lived to see another daybreak he would never miss a Sunday church. He kept his vow for more than 75 years.A distant cousin was killed even before his landing craft reached the shore. I visited his grave at the Military cemetery @ Colleville sur Mer where 9000plus men and women died in the first 3 months after D DAY. The next year I visited the libraries and grave sites of Pres Truman and General Eisenhower, said a prayer for each

No one alive today can possibly imagine the pressure and worry on the shoulders of those senior officers, and especially Eisenhower himself. The planning board is still on the wall in Southwick Park, as it was at the end of D Day. So many young men of all nations went into that day prepared to die for the cause of liberty and freedom. I am as inspired by their unselfish sacrifice and bravery, as I am angered by what today’s political elite have done with that blood stained freedom. An utter betrayal.

He probably earned those men’s eternal respect for meeting them that day. Couldn’t imagine having that many lives he literally controlled and had to sacrifice to liberate a continent. Ike is truly one of the greatest Americans to have ever lived.

I checked the history. I read on those figures a lot. And my opinion is this: de Gaulle wasn't nearly the negative and haughty guy depicted here. His faults were magnified, and his qualities ignored. The fact is that de Gaulle did want some changes to the plan which would benefit France - which frankly, as leader of the Free French, makes sense - but on the whole found the plan sound and extremely well thought-out. De Gaulle was a competent officer to begin with, after all.

@Noneya Business McArthur has a very different war to fight. Sending troops to slog through New Guinea and the Philippines. Dealing with the Chinese who were fighting each other as much as the Japanese.
McArthur was capable of strategic brilliance (Inchon) and fatal overconfidence (the initial air raids in the Philippines and later misreading the Chinese intentions in Korea).
His troops got the mission accomplished.
      That was enough.

Well, say what you will. Criticism is very easy and is also very contagious. I believe that comparing Gen Eisenhower to Gen. MacArthur is a mistake. They were different men, cut from different cloth and each had a mission..... not to mention that the people that made up the enemy they were fighting were also very different not to mention the differences of tactics and terrain.
Each man, though not perfect as a human being was the best option we, as a nation, had to meet the challenges before us. Each man, through their entire careers, had proven themselves equal to the tasks set before them. I thank God for the leadership and guidance provided by both men and also thank God for the men and women they commanded. I think we can all agree that the world might very well be quite different had they not served their nation in our hour of deepest crisis.

Maybe even Jimmy Hoffa had a part in it. That’s a lot of powerful people with a lot to lose. And don’t forget, Kennedy didn’t believe in, or trust the Federal System. There is no such thing as a 'little battle'. Especially when one's life is at risk.Keep in mind that is the little battles won that led up to and allowed the invasion of France. They paved the way, knowing they must succeed or this whole war effort would be lost. Good against evil, and they all were DAMN GOOD! God Bless.
