Sarah Jarosz: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Bluegrass' most beloved pros often play well into their 80s and 90s, so it would surprise no one if our children's children's children turn up at a Sarah Jarosz concert 70 years from now. The singer and multi-instrumentalist first surfaced as an 18-year-old wunderkind with the release of 2009's Song Up In Her Head, which generated the first of what will likely be many Grammy nominations; now a grizzled 22, she's out performing songs from her fine new third album, Build Me Up From Bones.
That record forms the basis of Jarosz's recent concert at the NPR Music offices, performed with the aid of fiddler Alex Hargreaves and cellist Nathaniel Smith. All polished young pros, the three breezed in happily and knocked us out with a careful mix of technical proficiency and poppy warmth. It's an enduring combination, as this sweet little set of songs amply demonstrates. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

Just one of the best singer/songwriters of her generation.
OMG how have I never heard this before!!!!!! I just started listening to Nickel Creek again after almost 20 years and I found this gem. Simply amazing!
Nickelcreek is awesome. God bless us angels , for stumbling across real treasures
She is just amazing. I think she was about 16 or 17 for this one.
Saw Sarah at the Ark in Ann Arbor last summer ... just incredible. I love her voice, but she did an instrumental with the upright bass player, a "dueling banjos" type of thing, that was unbelievable... face to face ... back and forth ... so hot and sultry that half the audience felt they had to light up a cigarette when it was over, and most of them are not smokers!
She’s so young, but her music is so mature, way beyond her age! What a phenomenal musician!
She loves and plays roots music from a few trees. She is raw and real and sings from the heart. Timeless talent and persona.
You could place her in the 60's and she would fit right in.
Can she get any better... goodness. She is amazing.
Six years on...the answer is a resounding YES! She is now totally amazing!!
She can get a lot better.

I
she's one of the most talented musicians i've ever had the pleasure of seeing live. brilliant. and to think she's got so many years ahead of her.
I'ts been a while since a singer/songwriter hit me this hard!
Sarah's songs are so intricate and delicate yet powerful and soulful.
I will definitely keep an eye on her. Lots of love and inspiration!
Love this! You guys are the best pipeline to new artists. Keep up the great work.
Awesome. She's my favorite artist of the last decade, and I was lucky enough to see her in concert locally (before she won Grammys and got too big for small venues). I love everything she's done, but I think her time with this trio was the most magical.
Bluegrass is alive and fresh with Sarah, Alex, and Nathaniel. Excellent songwriting, vocals, and wood and strings are so sweet.
Also Chris Thile and anything he touches... he's still alive =)
Alex Hargreaves is the grant master of improvisational fiddle.. absolutely breathtaking
I'm old and have heard many tunes. To me this is Top Notch.
Just a total pleasure to listen to. So much talent and completely genuine. Love her in "I'm with her" as well. Those three together are the best thing I've heard in years.
I LOVE TO HEAR SARAH SING AND PLAY -- YOU CAN TELL HOW MUCH SHE ENJOYS PLAYING AND SINGING -- AND SHE PLAYS MORE THAN ONE INSTRUMENT AS WELL AS SHE PLAYS HER GUITAR AND ENTERTAINS US WITH HER LOVELY VOICE !!!!!
what a bunch of amazing musicians...
See what can happen when someone follows their talent and heart
instead of what is made popular by the media !!!
- real talent, real music
Even though this video has some age on it I still feel Build Me Up From Bones is one of the best album releases, bar none.
Sarah's music and turn of Phrase is " Intimidately" bueatiful! Two chaps also. ❤️
Gorgeous voice, amazing music, this fills me with shivers and makes me happy to be alive
Thank you NPR for bring all the right music to my ears.
As a 22 year old myself, I'm astonished and humbled to hear such wise music from someone so young! I'll definitely be the 80 or 90 year old in the audience 70 years from now.
Still one of my very favorite artists, ever since I heard her on Austin City Limits. Thank you Sarah and company for blessing my ears with your sweet music
Saw Sarah on Austin City Limits some time ago, glad to see she's getting recognition. Fantastic musician.
I love you NPR and PBS. Thank you again for enriching my life!
Ditto !! I watch 3 TV stations only...PBS and KCET [ch 28 in Los Angeles] both basically public TV, no commercials (little bit here and there). But hey, they do need support..It's all the British dramas, Borgen, the tippy top series from Denmark, Wolf Hall, Forsyte Saga, Scott and Bailey ,Vera , Inspector George Gently, Janet King, Luther, Charlie Rose, on and on with NO interruptions selling burgers, Ford trucks, 9 promos for slo-mo shoot m' up fiery explosion movies, mattresses, and vodka swigging, clinking yuppies with the obligatory skinny jeans.....
The 3rd station is for 1 show only ; SNL on NBC...With all this, show pieces like Sarah Jarosz, Japanese documentaries and PBS NewsHour, who needs anything else, and with NO commercial breaks !!! Heavenly !!.... M
NPR will not promote any artists that are critical of the mainstream narrative.
PBS is funded by the federal government which keeps tight control over the information they disseminate; a slightly different take from what you get in the corrupt corporate media. The oligarchy rules all, private or "public". For investigative journalism see Benn Swann Reality Check, et al.
Marcus Teblano And we never really landed on the moon
Beautiful. I've been lucky enough to see them play live and they are amazing.
oh my, Sarah Jarosz, what a sweetheart! I could listen to her all night! Thank you, Sarah!
WOW! That was amazing! The Octave mando and the banjo with gut strings I LOVE BANJOS WITH GUT STRINGS!!!
Real Music and Real Talent. How beautiful :)
Intoxicatingly delicate lyric and melody, with that haunt of the wild....... so FANTASTIC!!!!!!
Some very talented young talented musicians indeed.
I've just found this...having only known Sarah from more recent live from here casts. Six years. Her voice has aged like a fine wine. Incredible.
I miss this lineup of Sarah, Alex and Nat. I hope they reunite at some point. The stripped down simplicity of those three instruments work so well together. It's what drew me to Sarah Jarosz in the first place but I still love her new stuff.
Wow - something special indeed. A gift to everyone.
Absolutely amazing!!! Thank you so much!
Almost Adam Scott on violin hahaha
Sarah Jarosz has been great to me ever since I heard "My Muse" on NPR one weeknight. Just love her voice.
Amazing performance! goose bumps!
one of the only musicians that has ever brought tears to my eyes. she holds magic in her music.
Really like these guys playing together.. great sound..
The strings add so much warmth and depth to the sound. Excellent artistic decision on Sarah's part, and unbelievable playing by Mr. Hargreaves and Mr. Smith.

Love this gal (& the guys with her!). Truly talented!! AMAZING! This world needs more of their music!!
So good. I knew I recognized Nathaniel because he had toured with Natalie MacMaster. Wonderful sound.
This remains my most favorite album of hers. Just love the words, so different, so unique. Her delivery is refreshing and her phrasing is so all her own. Love the band too, they work in sync.
Well that was superb, the best 3 piece band I've heard/seen in a good long time. The cello sublime, the fiddle perfect and of course Ms. Sarah!
On my way to work just happened to listen while skipping around you tube.......simply amazing. The singing, playing, composition, and lyrics....thank you for such great music!!!!
Wow! I could do with being young again and join a band like this. So brilliant and inspiring. Thanks!

Nathanial Smith is now my favorite cello player.
Go watch her version of Crazy that she performed at Bondaroo. Talk about crazy cello and fiddle! Excellent.
Sorry, Bonnaroo.
Heidi, look up Chris Thile, you’re welcome.
Heidi Newman ,Heidi, Rushad Eggleston.
Simply brilliant!!
Bold new musical voice! Bravo! (wow wow wow)
I love the musical creations of Sarah, old time wrought new with confounding creativity. There is something about her humble demeanor and simple beauty that is bewitching. This Tiny Desk audience was clearly not interested in the wide genre of Americana, but hopefully she made a few converts. As always, thanks Bob Boilen for giving the mic to another great hidden talent.
Saw this little lady live at "Poor David's Pub" in Dallas, TX back in 2010 I believe it was. She was amazing.
I have just found you Sarah ,on UA-cam, in the last year. First from the cover of John Hiatt 's " Crossing Muddy Waters", with your colleagues in " I ' m with her" You are , and apparently,, have been, for some time, brilliant and beautiful? Great music, everything I have watched of your 's. Many thanks
love it! absolutely love it!
Best thing I have heard in years, great voice, great playing!

Wow - can;t believe i just learned of this amazing trio!
Man the sound on this is fantastic.
Spot on, just wow!
Realmente maravillosa
I have always loved Sarah, and I always will love Sarah forever is forever baby
Wow. Awesome.
AWESOME!!!!!!
The instrumentation is quite beautiful by itself.
so good
