    The information at the end of skarner's e spawning a trapezoid was really fascinating. Really helpful to show how there's so much neuance under the hood that can affect balancing that players don't really see!

    30:12 if double rock throwing becomes degenerate gameplay, you can always add a "take reduced damage from Skarner rocks for the next X seconds" timer on Champions already hit by one, that seems like an ok compromise to avoid the bad gameplay on both ends of the Q's paradigm.

    As a Skarner OTP I really like his current build diversity so I’m glad that you guys thought about it - even his AP builds. A little extra on W or some on Q or E wouldn’t hurt though 😉 lmao

    Love hearing the design and testing history of a champ like this. I work as a product owner and so hearing how you guys use those design skills approach to these league champions is cool. Also huge swain main. I believe you’re the avatar that can bring battlemage balance to swain.

    I absolutely LOVE the insights on the champion. It really helps understand the what's and whys and helps you frame how to look at the champion and what to expect. I definitely think sometimes people look at a champion and struggle to understand what they should expect it to do like Smolder (originally you thought supposed to build adc but fighter / so was best which totally betrays what a person would expect)

    SKARNER SKARNER! I am so excited to play this on live. I truly hope he's good, not op but I think skarner deserves a little time in the spotlight. If he's 51-52% w/r for a few patches he deserves it. But I was there when he was the lowest played champ and I'll be here no matter what happens with the rework

      Skarner has had a 52-53% winrate for the majority of his lifespan, his winrate had no impact on his pickrate then

    Hey there, a bit off-topic but I'd like to suggest a small quality of life change for Viktor here.
    Similar to Twisted Fate's W change a few patches back, I'd like to also see an Auto Attack Reset on Viktor's Q. It just feels awkward if you Q right after an AA and then stand there for a second before you can use the enhanced AA. Thanks for reading this.

    Sounds like good solid work. My only nag concerns work done long before this stage where his most noticable trait of three tails, with three stingers, didn't tie into anything except having his R allow "up to three" impales (when finally available). Interesting how the passive was even given "three" debuff stacks ignoring three individual "charge" mechanics for each tail delivering a sting; a "quaking" theme is far more abstract and hard to notice over anything giving that provicative anatomical design more conceptual prominence.

    Hi Phreak, really love the direction you're taking with the Skarner rework here - I would like to see you take on more Champion Gameplay Design work.
    I've been a long time Corki lover, but I often find the champion gets locked in Pro Jail or hijacked by gimmicky builds when new items come out (i.e. Eclipse + Malignance). I believe you've expressed you'd have some ideas that would improve him directionally and I think you'd be uniquely placed to do a good job on this kind of work.
    Is there anything (other than highlighting the issue and formulating the problem here) that I/we could do to get a project like this moving?

    Please leave his damage high but leave him less tanky than other tanks. Other tanks like Ksante have abilities that straight up make them immortal for a duration or stat buffs (like Ornn's passive) that make them harder to kill than other tanks, but Skarner's only defensive ability is his small shield and people mostly use it for damage and the slow anyway. I think the creativity in his gameplay and the higher than normal damage is acceptable for him not having the same "bulkiness" that other tanks have. He is currently in an incredibly fun state and I sincerely beg you not to take away that fun factor of the champion. As a pre-rework Skarner enjoyer, I can say that I much prefer a brawler playstyle than just a full tank playstyle.
    I will say that from my experience in the PBE, there's quite a lot of walls that you look for the E grab angle onto but the wall is just a *teeny* bit away from me and I don't get the stun even though I'm looking for the slam angle. I think just an extra 1 or 2 steps forward on the E when he grabs someone would do wonders for how he feels to gank with. I feel like if I land the E from a wall-gank in the first place, I deserve the slam as long as I'm pushing the enemy towards a wall. That's my only real gripe with the kit though, the rest is extremely satisfying and I think you guys did a great job with him in the end.

      he is going to be in proplay jail, he is bully in lane enough with the aoe shield slow in one single ability and has a lot of utility in its kit that makes him a great jungler, i dont think he needs e buff for now, he is just too tanky and deals a lot of damage currently (elo d1)

    I don't play PBE so I haven't tried him yet, but I'm a Skarner player (mastery 7 and I got Diamond 3 which is my peak rank for the first time ever with him playing him top), and I thank you for this work. He sounds fun and I'll try it as soon as he comes out.

    I find it funny that skarner is the opposite of séraphine with their respective recent change.
    Séraphine was change so she can max whatever she want in the order she want and build whatever she want
    Skarner is change so he always go Q>W>E max and build health
    I hope that in the long run it doesn't become boring to play him because if you have no room for level up order change and you scale of only one type of stat, you are kinda lock to playing always the same regardless of teamcomp

    Im wondering if it’s possible to make the E attach a stun rather than a suppression. It dosent seem right to have a suppression on a basic ability. This will allow for more counter-play especially for people that will end up flash E late game and you die as a squishy with little counter play without qss.

    Loving the idea of the quaking sort of as his venom
    Encouraging the very long drawn out fights with low but very consistant stacking mixed damage i have always played skarner for
    I am very worried that just like his prerework state...he might not be durable enough to stay in combat to hold that power fantasy in the early/midgame skirmishes

    After really struggling for a while, the balance team has been doing such good work for the past couple years. Not all changes are perfect, but now at least there seems to be actual reasons and a purpose behind balance changes, instead of most buffs/nerfs feeling random.

    Her passive stacks and timer should be on her passive's icon in the HUD,
    should't be moving around in the buff/debuff list.

    Hey Phreak, have you considered to make the initial part of multicast spells agnostic to ability hase to balance ability haste for these spells? Right now haste is OP for any multicast spell that starts at first cast and limits you to lower the base cooldown of these spells. I think it can be pretty easily coded in the following way: Considering your Skarner spell that you gave 7 sec cd from initial cast. Assuming it has on average 2 seconds between first cast and last cast, you give it a base of 7 sec cd starting at the last cast, but give it an additional effect that for every second between first and last cast, reduce the cooldown of the ability by 1/7% (1/base cd). So with 2 seconds this means it reduces by 2*1/7*7 reducing it by 2 secs. If you have 100 haste, the CD would be 3.5 secs. Same scenario, it would be reduced by 2*1/7*3.5 = 1 sec, so your end of cast CD would be 2.5 sec (equaling what you expect from other abilities) rather than 1.5 sec in current live scenario. This normalizes effectivesness of CDR while still allowing players to hold on their casts. Is this something you would consider good to add to the game? IS it codable?

    Passive also just feels weirdly out of place in his kit, you mention a lot of it's function (inevitability). It doesn't really interact with anything in his kit. While even Nasus passive is made to work with his Q. Like skarner's passive is much less a passive & much more, "Oh you didn't read this one sentence on the bosses wiki? Yeah he has this randomly. Don't worry about it everyone randomly dies to this at least once"

    Love the card game analogy, i definitely noted that as well that his Q is probably gonna be stronger for that reason. And with the whole "Grabbing a rock out of the wall mechanic" You mention the unlocking Q while in E, i was thinking this as well. Alot of people forget to cast Q before E & if this was the case i think newer players would feel more comfortable.

    I Would of loved to hear more about why his E is fixed & why it disincentives building move speed items like Winged Moonplate items & the such. I assume alot of this reason is because he can go through walls, as opposed to Nunu. And even if you don't plan to make it not fixed, i think it could benefit from allowing it to be faster with leveling it. So that lvl 14+ it is a little easier to engage for your team. Of course you probably have your reasons & would love to hear it.

    nice video. Would love to hear the same theoretical lecture on possible Jarvan IV updates/soft-reworks, to make him a better, stronger, more durable fighter that deals more dmg over time while providing more meaningfu; bonuses to his teammates while in combat. !

    I have a weird idea for what skarner can do when grabbing a rock to make sure the button press has value.
    How about the ability deforms the ground when he is grabbing the rock. What it will actually do is create a slope of sort which drags nearby enemies towards him (aurelion like sol's puddle ability)
    Im sure its going to be super cool. Powerful char deforming the ground, the duration of the animation wud not only have a worthwhile payoff, but it wud feels awesome

    If i understand u correctly:
    Skarner's E == Spaguetti Code
    Makes no sense that u have to code every single interaction of the game for Skarner's E.
    Unless League is going to stop ship champions as often, makes more sense to recode all those unstoppable habilities into a single unstoppable state/function/class. Then you extend the class/function/method (fabric function) to add complex behaviour on top.
    At least you would have a default.
    Also about be unable to rotate hitboxes when you have multiple of them stacked on top of each other sounds crazy. Can't it be fixed with a simple mathematical operation? Like calculate the center of the hitboxes by calculating the height based on the the size of each hitbox and substract the offset? It looks like you are unable to create hitbox based on coordinates and you have to put virtual polygons on the engine. Can't you just create the polygons using coordinates/math?
    No way the game is full of weird and hard to solve bugs. Skarner's E it's probably going to have some weird bugs.
    Why no one cares about recode stuff and make it better? You will save money since you will not have to spend hundreds of Devs hours into setting behaviours and debug then one by one.

    I will miss the way Skarners old Ult Animates. It is a really satisfying move to use and REALLY feels like your dragging the opponent around with the way it rubberbands the speed the target gets moved around. The new ult just doesn't look as satisfying. Still definitely looking forward to the rework despite this.

    I immensely enjoy current skarner and will be sad to see him go. I hope dragging people with ult will be just as fun as it used to be, but time will tell.
    With that in mind, given the fact that skarner is facing the people he ulted, does he get movement speed from approach velocity for the duration, I wonder?

    Watched the full thing, agree on everything except for more fighter-oriented builds not being worth going for. Some people actually like regularly buying AP on Cho’Gath. Skarner players should have the liberty to decide whether or not they want to spec into items like Shojin, Steraks, and Hydra. A 40% bonus ad ratio on Q like live just kind of sucks and everyone is likely going to go full tank with no variance. I don’t think that’s particularly engaging. Also AP Skarner should have some sort of AP scaling for the shield ratio, even if it’s only 50% or something. Voli’s rework was able to let him run both AP, AD, and Full Tank builds. I know they aren’t the same champion but I don’t see why the logic would be completely different for this.

    hey phreak I disagree with some things and agree with other things you do but regardless I want you to know I am very glad you're where you are today. Been watching your champion spotlights and twitch streams since i started playing this game in late 2010. I remember you and i think your old roommate hyping each other up to get some froyo on your live streams back in the day. New skarner looks sick, cant wait to try him out and play with/against him.
    on an unrelated note, I believe a lot of disatisfaction regarding ADC stems from their damage being to a very high degree unavoidable, restricting their high points quite a bit. Have you guys considered giving marksmen meaningfull skillshots that hurt to miss but rewards when hit? perhaps not making ADC inherently good at killing tanks could allow more champions to become good at dealing with tanks, or perhaps even make tanks "less" tanky in general but marksmen not as good at hurting them?

    i like the new kit, but Skarners new E is terrible. The drag distance is almost non-existent and the tool tip is misleading about how far the drag distance is supposed to be

    After the AD ratio nerf on PBE, I got to say it's not really worth building a fighter item anymore, in many instances a heartsteel can outdamage fighter items. Need to bump that back up a bit. Even though the goal is for him to be a vanguard, he still feels and plays like a juggernaut. A bit of a hybrid, as mentioned, because of how the E works, which is still quite a limited ability at times. His sustained damage is really high and he is very kitable, it feels quite "immobile" to play Skarner (as far as many people are concerned). Which is not a bad thing, though I would like AP/AD ratios to be higher in order to reflect that. The way they were placed on the kit makes total sense.
    One thing I could reflect upon is that the trade-off for not throwing Q is maybe not big enough. Perhaps the 3rd auto should also deal increased damage. I think in an ideal world holding the rock should be a bigger steroid. Maybe a ~5s AS buff starting with the 1st auto and ending with the rock throw. Something that makes you greed trying to stay in range and not recasting. That could create some interesting gameplay, but I'm fine even with the current version. Another option would be increased cooldown similar to Pantheon Q throw.
    Good video 👍 not every champion has to fit inside a box. I'm happy with a Vanguard/Juggernaut hybrid.

    You did a good job with the champion but I feel Skarner is a little slow if the champion doesn't have E. Have you thought of giving him movement stealing like for example Malphite does on Q? That way it would feel more like old Skarner, but yeah, right know I feel it is more tankier and less of a fighter so it is fine.

    Yo phreak, i know its not the topic of the video but since u guys are changing nami on this patch, can i suggest something?
    Take some base damage from her E, but in turn give it a small shield on cast to the ally, like an aery sized shield would do (like 50~100 scaling with ability rank or something), it doesnt have to be big its just something so it allows her E to trigger support items effects without being overly reliant on aery, that coupled with the W heal up damage down could be an interesting set of changes to enchance her utility and nerf her solo the adc potential.

    Seeing how adamant you were about not giving Skarner a lot of damage, I'm suprised he has such high HP scalings. I feel like they push his base damage way beyond what a full tank Maokai or Poppy can deal and doing exactly what you didn't want him to be able to do with an AD build.
    Assuming the numbers on LoLwiki are right, a full combo of his base spells will deal 22% of your max HP + 18% of his bonusHP + 10% of his maxHP + 500 base damage which seems like a lot to me, especially considering how much of it is scaling.

    For corki, please dont change him to an ad champion. I would say to remove or nerf him package damage. By removing power from the package there should be a percentage magic pen added to his passive that scales with leveling to 6,11 and 16 like kayle evolve. This will allow corki to not have to build void staff and still be good against tanks. In his current gameplay and build he is quite bad against tanks even with void staff and is very good vs squishy targets due to their low base mr. Corki being an auto attacker that deals magic damage is unique and I think important for league to have. I would not want him to move to the bot lane, he has no attack speed ratios in his kit to function as a traditional marksman.

    Damn Phreak out here just exposing the shit out of Riot. Opening by saying Riot basically told players to go screw themselves after they chose him to be the next vgu 3 years ago and that they had the capability to do it MUCH earlier with what we have now being what they were more or less working with for the last year is kinda wild. Not really sure why I expected any different from Riot but actually WILD to hear a rioter confess it in no uncertain terms.

    Great rework. I just think his R is a tad underwhelming. Maybe if Skarner got slow resist or slow immunity during his R it would feel better? Skarner can now only move when he's in R, so it feels bad when you can barely even do that. You could shed off some of his damage as compensation.

    Idk why, but I feel like there's some theme dissonance by Skarner being a Vanguard. When I see him all I can think is that he should be dangerous, venomous, give damage and be a nuisance, but by being a Tank it seems like he's just gonna soak up damage instead of making it sting.

    Personally, I have to disagree with "I am a fan of having low scaling or fake scaling on ultimates"
    The reason it is called an Ultimate is because it's suppose to be a special move the champion has to level up in order to access. If an ultimate does not feel ultimate it instead feels like crap.
    There are exception cases based on what the ultimate is suppose to be for, like Teemo trapping an area, or transformations like Nidalee and Jayce. However, if an ultimate that is not a special case feels worse to cast than a basic ability, then it is poorly designed. In most cases, using your ultimate should feel like the high point of the champion.
    Sion charging forward into the enemy team to be a menace, Kled leading the charge into the enemy team for a scrap, Kayle granting invincibility to an ally to keep them fighting, Karthus tagging the entire enemy team with a big hit, Veigar nuking an enemy champion, Seraphine multi-charming the enemy team, Ashe landing a snipe with her ultimate to stun them for a long duration, Skarner grabbing 2+ enemies, these are moments champions should have. When an ultimate feels like, or worse than, a basic ability is when it is a poorly designed Ultimate.

    Hi Phreak, long time casual player here, haven't really touched Rift that much and largely only play Aram with friends now for fun. I just want to say that the team did a great job on the new design for Skarner. While I miss the crystal body and theme, I understand that it didn't really fit with the direction the rest of the lore was going and was going to be problematic the longer it stayed in the game. I can't say the same with the rest of the skins, especially with how Earthwarden was handled, but I'm not going to sit here and say Skarner had a lot to work with beforehand.
    With that all said, I think the gameplay was a massive failure. This doesn't feel like Skarner, it doesn't even feel like an echo of Skarner. The Q feels powerful, but the cast time is extremely detrimental and makes it difficult to do damage AND stay on people. The slow on his W is way to small and way to short to do anything. His E is way to short for the ganking tool its meant to be and this range is detrimental considering you've given it potential to be used for surprise ganks (Also, what is up with it being able to tunnel off the bridge on Aram. How does that work?). The only recognizable thing left on him is his ult and that feels so much slower and clunkier than it use to be. The ult didn't need to grab three people, we weren't playing Skarner to have a big engage ult, we were playing him to lockdown the enemy carry.
    I understand that you were only on the team for 2 months and by that point, I imagine a lot of the decisions were made long before you were put into a position to do anything, but this is probably the worst update Riots put out. I had high hopes for this one, but its sad to see that the team's thought process was to replicate the Aatrox experiment and essentially completely replace the champion. Considering what the team was able to do with Udyr, Fiddle and Mundo in half the time, I know riot is capable of doing better than this.

    "If his optimal build is Titanic, Sterak's, we should just change that" HAHAHA. Now I'm begging for Shyvana rework to not be done, imagine another Phreak type of designer for her? We would be fked with an even worse champ than she's now, even though I don't think Tencent would allow that with her.
    I wasn't expecting an actual fighter from Skarner, so it's not that much of a surprise how he was designed with no scale at all (health scaling is usually useless, you gonna get outscaled for every single champ with decent scale ratios or Darius types of champs).
    Btw, I don't see why people would try a more fighter build with Skarner if his scaling is so bad to begin with, you just can't make it works decently. However, maybe a "fighter build" for Phreak would be something like a Divine Sunderer + 5 tank items...
    Skarner wasn't going to be my favorite champ anyway, but Phreak actually ruined even the possibility of it becoming an actual option to my champ pool by ruining all his scaling and reset mechanic, that's crazy. I'm even more understanding why the players hate you so much.
    It's definitely not my type of champ, but I'll try it out, let's see.

    i think if you want W max second to be the play, you need to make w max second way more appealing. that ability is gaining flat magic damage in an area that slows, and a lower cooldown. but losing duration and movement speed, AND losing 1-5%max health and 80%AP shield value.
    the amount of cooldown that E gains per level is way too appealing compared to what W gives, at least if im looking at it from a playmaking practicality perspective.
    i dont gain extra shield value for levelling this spell, only a strongly slow and an amount of damage that's either negligible or considerable based on perspective, but even taking in your incentivization of making the wall stun landing being an important factor and goal, E is still a way better max second after Q.
    movement abilities are very strong in league of legends, having your movement ability be on a shorter cooldown is usually very important towards every part of the game, but even more so in the mid game. this is just my thoughts but i would trade a longer cooldown for some health scaling back on W, and then a normalized cooldown on his E, kinda like what happened with hecarim who fell into a pretty nice QWE max after his changes to those abilities.

    That part about Skarner's mobility's gonna get clipped, you can't say he's durable and provide the reasoning of 'he has E AND he can slow' as if the slowing was impactful on his mobility, from the outset he literally lives and dies by E, and if you miss it, you die, because you're slow as fuck and it's cooldown is over 20 seconds.

    His ultimate is definitely the worst part of his kit. It would also be nice to have the slow durations on his q and w last a bit longer. It's very hard to stick on people, especially since it's so easy to miss the ultimate.

    I would prefer if we could decide on a game per game basis whether we go Bruiser (Trinity, Black Cleaver, Spear of Shojin etc) or Tank (Iceborn, Sunfire, Kaenic). Wouldn't it be possible to give Q apply on hit effects at 30% effectiveness?

      Terrorblade flashbacks. Health swap on allies would be total griefing so I doubt they'd let a champ do that and health swap vs an enemy is literally just 0 skill outplay.

    I personally think the skarner redesign was a miss. the crystal scorpion was such a good concept, if they wanted to remove his lore im all for it but completely changing his look feels like a major loss. E feels like it should scale harder. Q feels clunky, and W feels like it should be an auto attack reset. those are just my opinions, i know alot of people put effort into making a new champion that fits the current game but i miss my crystal scorpion visuals. to elaborate farther, E gaining more move speed per lvl or more range per lvl. it feels far too easy to just walk away from him. using Q in combat feels like its taking too much time to cast the animation of grabbing the rock for you to then continue doing dmg. and the shield on W just doesn't seem to scale at all and the dmg doesn't seem necessary outside of lane. I dont really like the feel of new Q being a 3 hit feels wrong if you dont want burst to be part of his identity and would rather have more sustain damage. the auto attack prolonging cd like an Olaf w makes more sense in my opinion.

      Just because Skarner was mostly finished by the time he started, that doesn't mean he isn't currently responsible for the champion. You can't say "it's not my fault Skarner is too strong, I didn't design that skill", so I'd say that if he gets the responsibility for shipping the champion, he also gets the title of "designer". I'd also say that making sure we were aware of the situation at the very start of the video is more than enough of a disclosure for the video title.

      ​​​@@Ghrim5vortexit's not. He's the functioning design lead and he very clearly stated up front that 95 % of the champion was done when he took over.
      The fact that he is the design lead means he's still responsible for Skarner's release state regardless of who worked on him before. He had the opportunity to make big changes or minor adjustments to th kit, and he doesn't get to blame the previous designer if he comes out weak or overpowered.
      The only thing that's in bad taste is you guys trying to stir drama out of nothing

    Skarner himself with this is looking great, his Guardian of the Sands skin however needs a different recall. It being the base recall with just sand falling off of him is disappointing because it will make him the only Guardian of the Sands champion without a special recall.

      Hard agree on Naafiri being a jungler. She just feels so unsatisfying to lane with and I feel like her "champion fantasy" involves her roaming around with her pack of dogs, not sitting in lane and getting assblasted by Xerath from a range you can't realistically trade into.
