Great videos as always!!!
Thanks 😊
Thank you for this video! It Took me forever to find someone replacing a light with a box that looked like mine and a similar bigger plate on the new light fixture!
They make oversized light blocks, but it would be a lot of work to replace them. I don’t think it looks that bad in person. Nobody has pointed it out to me.
@@handydadtv no, I absolutely love yours I'm going to be doing the same thing thanks to your video!
Thank you. You Sr are a great teacher
Thanks so much 😊
Very nice. If I can’t find glass for one of my current ones i may buy those. Definitely add a rectangular backing plate to your punch list.
Do they make them for vinyl siding?
@@handydadtv Most Definitely. Mounting blocks for vinyl are on amazon and local big box stores.
What do you do when The junction box is plastic but the silver crossbar i have has the green screw instead? Do i attach the hard wired copper to That and Then connect it at the end to the copper cord on the light fixture?
The light fixture usually has a braided copper wire for the ground. Attach that to the incoming ground with a wire nut, then wrap the braided wire around that green screw and tighten. That way, everything is bonded together.
Do I need to turn off the switch from the breaker before making the change or is the light switch safe enough?
The light switch is usually fine but always test. I recommend one of these handydad.tv/ncvt
my outsied lighting fixtures are and i would like to replace them but when i went to ireplace them the old fixtures had only 2 wires and black and white bitut my new light fixture and white black abnd and bare copper wire . how do i install my my new ones
Connect the black and the white. If you have a metal box, attach the bare wire to the box if possible.
Turn off power at the breaker not just the wall switch!
No need. I made sure the power was off with a voltage tester. And nobody was home to accidentally flip the switch.
Have you seen those light bulbs that can change color? I think Wyze makes them, maybe others too
That’ll be next week’s video 😉
@@handydadtv you're welcome😅
Hi Chris, I was disappointed with your installation, leaving the back so insects can get up in there is one thing, but the trim that was on the siding should have been extended so it in in the right setting for the lights and would have been easy to do
I disagree that it would have been easy. That’s why I didn’t do it. Clearly these fixtures would look better on brick or clapboards.
@@handydadtv My builder did it the same way as you with the fixtures I chose and it failed inspection. So I had to choose a smaller (ugly) fixture. Now, I can go and change them back to the other ones (I’m keeping those) after closing but I do think I’m going to modify the plate (increase the size) that it’s attached to so the edges can have a tight seal with no gaps.
Mark - do you have vinyl siding?
@@handydadtv No. Hardie Board.
Nice!
I just put in a new light fixture by front door and noticed that the 4 glass panels that slid into place rattle in the wind. Any suggestions on how to quiet the glass panels?
Two options:
1. (Free but risky) Bend the metal tabs or frame tighter against the glass.
2. A little dab of clear silicone caulk in each corner.
@handydadtv
Thank you! We used the silicone, worked great.😊
I recently installed new lanterns on my house. All 3 turn on when I hit the switch. At night only two work. The one with two sets of wires stays off. I’m using dusk to dawn Edison bulbs. When I twist the light bulb it goes back on. Then next night it doesn’t work. I tried a new bulb and same issue.
You’re better off with a smart switch.
I’m no expert by any means but won’t the over hang at the bottom of the fixture where it’s not flush against the house allow water into the box.
The top is tight. That’s where water would get in.
You must not be married. My wife would kill me if the light fixture was overhanging the mounting plate like that!
I am married. LOL
We’re not crazy about it, but the beauty of the lights outweigh it.
Love the video but that fixture looks way out of place
They were a huge improvement but not for everyone.
You might be getting a letter from your HOA :(
I got the HOA approval in advance 😎
@@handydadtv sure, they approved the fixture, but not how it looks on the siding. Not sure how nasty your HOA is, but that is something they can pull.
Hopefully nobody will care. It’s not noticeable from the street.
FIXTURE LOOKS LIKE IT DOESN'T BELONG ON THE WOOD BACKING
OK
Uhh That is a sponsored video. They gave you free stuff to review
Sponsored means paid to say what they want me to say.
To be honest, I thought the original lights looked fine.
They weren’t bad looking, but cheap materials and every home in my development came with those lights. It was time for an upgrade.
